1 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 03/02/2015

I purchased my car in 2011 from a county auction. I've spent almost $8,000 on engine and electrical issues since I've bought it. Had a new timing belt, spark plugs and ignition coils installed on 02/02/2015, but now my car stalls and I have great difficulty picking up speed, even when driving on the street. If I stop at a stop sign, I literally have to push the gas to the floor to get my car to take off and even then, it takes forever. The highest speed my car will go to now is 30mph. My driveway is at a slope and I had to press down on the gas to get me car to reverse out the driveway.

2 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 07/20/2012

I began accelerating on a viadock (bridge) when I felt a snap underneath me, as I reached the peak of the brigde, the car stalled out and I began descending on the bridge with my 2 daughters in the car. It completely stopped before I was able to reach the bottom of the bridge, which put me in harms way of traffic coming over the hill. I immediately hit my hazards and prayed everyone would see me before rear ending me. I was able to get the car towed. Then I found out it my timing belt broke; causing my engine to shut down. Total cost to fix will be $4000. I researched this make and model and found that hundreds of other people have reported similar issues. There seems to be a lot of issues with this particular make/model/year. The reviews on how Land Rover has been handling this particular issue are mixed with some saying they rectified the problem immediately and others saying they would not even respond to their complaints. I am nervous to see how they handle mine.

3 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

Purchased the truck in 2003 from Land Rover, brand new. Dealt with a few recalls and other issues ( sun roof was off track, did not work. Leather seats had deformations on seats. Truck need an acid wash for spots that developed on bumper) soon my engine and coolant issues occurred. Why driving id notice my truck start to overheat. This was even after being serviced at Land Rover. Come to find out my coolant was leaking. The issue continued to the point where I had to get new external parts ( thermostat, water pipe, expansion tank) this helped but not for long. My truck continued to overheat and leak, o the point I had to replace the cylinder head gasket and the timing belt. . I accumulated only 56,000 miles over 9 years of driving this truck and spent +$20,000 trying to save it . . . I see why this model was discontinued after only one year. I have to take my situation to civil court even though this should fall under the lemon law. The class action group I was apart of for 4 years has made no progress at all.

4 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2004 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 05/03/2010

My 2004 Freelander hs had engine failure at only 58,000 at dodger stadium in los angeles. I had taken regular care of this car to try to prevent any problems. It was passed the warranty. No warning engine light had gone on. I had it towed to mechanic. Engine is totally shot. I cannot afford to pay for new one. I have just recently read several complaints about this type of car , and never knew the same problem exists with these cars until recently. Someone needs to investigate. These cars are defective, and have all the similar problems that one way or the other lead to engine failure. My engine apparently went due to my timing belt teeth shearing off, causing timing belt to slip, and camshafts not rotating, and engine being mangled. There was no warning sign of this grand fatality, and had just had coolant problem fixed as well as serviced (oil & filter change) within months of incident. Again, no warning engine light at time of shut down.

5 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 04/04/2010

I took my 2002 Land Rover Freelander into Land Rover to be service because my transmission was slipping and the check engine light was on. They said it wasn't the transmission but it was the upper intake manifold, the vacuum hoses, and sensor that was causing the problem. So we had them replace the manifold, hoses and sensors. The service manager keep narrating that it wasn't the transmission. We picked up the car the next day again the service manager assist it wasn't the transmission and the car is running perfectly. As soon as I went about 2 miles my transmission started slipping. I took the car back to Land Rover the next day irritated. The car spent 5 days at the shop trying to find out the problem. Which was indeed the transmission, they didn't offer to fix the transmission but to refund the money and put the old parts back in. Which we agree to unless they guarantee it would be in the same condition. It was making more noise then before, 2 weeks later the timing belt broke. This car is a lemon. Its doesn't make since how the engine, the timing belt, the transmission, and the upper intake manifold all fell at once. The car is not running and stuck in my drive way.

Please people try to do something for the people that drive this and hopefully get it off the market.

7 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 11/24/2009

When I purchase my car Jan 2009 it had roughly 56,000 miles on it. I did notice that when I started it in the morning it had a funny sound. I tried to bring back to the dealership several times to have it looked at, either no one was there to help me or the noise was gone since the car was warm. I notice some smoke a week ago and filled the antifreeze fluid back to max line, then I notice the antifreeze was down past the min line again, with no antifreeze on the ground??? took it in the shop and he gave a list of this wrong, intake manifold valves always open, bank 1 & 2 lean, he replace my "t" connector, just to name some. . Oh yeah and noise coming from three different places. . Valve tran, water pump/timing belt and the alternator. No he told me it will cost thousand of dollars to fix it.

8 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 09/25/2009

Coolant leaks into the engine in the 2003 Land Rover Freelander. Problem started at 25,000 miles and was dismissed by the Land Rover dealer (frankel Land Rover- hunt valley) who I bought the car from. I bought it brand new. Eventually at about 60,000 miles they told me I would need a new engine after the warranty expired. I continued to fill the coolant chamber daily and drove it until it completely failed at 103,000 miles while I was driving on the baltimore beltway (695) at 60 mph. Freelander k-series engines have been known to drop the cylinder liners into the block. Because the liners are steel and the block is alloy, the liners being harder, work their way into the block. This is due to the engine block and cylinder head being composed of different materials that expand at different rates with heat generated during running of the vehicle. This can cause the head gasket to fail. The head gasket/cylinder liner design fault has not been classified as a recall.

9 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 06/02/2009

Bought the car used 2002 Freelander Land Rover v6 and drove it. Day four heard a loose bolt sound, it went away. Later that day driving home with children in the car, it died on the freeway, no warning lights, no warning at all, just died. Turns out the timing belt broke and broke the valves and now they want to replace the entire engine. I paid 4k for the car and it will cost 6k to repair. This car is dangerous. We had to move over 3 highway lanes with no power and sit on the side of the road for 1. 5 hours to be towed. I had my children in the car with me, this was very very scary!.

10 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 05/20/2009

The contact owns a 2003 Land Rover Freelander. The contact stated that while driving various speeds, the vehicle over heated. A local mechanic performed a diagnostic test. The timing belt and the water pump were replaced. Two weeks later the vehicle over heated again and it was taken back to the mechanic who then replaced the over flow reservoir and hoses. When the vehicle over heated the third time it was taken to an authorized dealer. The dealer replaced the thermostat but the failure recurred. The dealer stated that there was air in the engine, which was removed; yet, the failure persisted. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer. The manufacturer was notified and advised the contact that they were willing to buy back the vehicle for less than the purchase price. The contact refused and was advised that they would investigate the failure and notify her of the results. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 51,483 and the current mileage was approximately 55,900.

12 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 10/31/2008

The 2002 Land Rover Freelander has been nothing but trouble since I purchased it in 2005. It has always had problems with overheating, when I talked to the dealership about it, they told me the Freelander burnt through coolant faster than most cars. I did not think it was normal for it to burn through a gallon of coolant every 3-4 weeks. This has continued since then. Until now, my Freelander"s timing belt broke ( at 60,800) well before recommended changing of the belt and has essentially totaled my car. Since it will cost me a minimum of $4,500 to fix it. (up to $8,500). The car is only worth $8,000.

13 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 07/14/2008

Purchased pre-owned 2003 landrover Freelander may 07 and two weeks later check engine soon light came on intermittently. Car was taken to dealership and they said computer showed up nothing. Two weeks later light came on for several days. Was taken back to dealership and they replaced coil wire. Two weeks later happened again and they replaced coil pack. Happened again two months later and local mechanic changed head under the coil pack and car ran good. One month later the car ran hot, was towed to dealership once again and they replaced "something" (the guy I purchased the car from took care of the bill) fast forward ahead 5 months and the valves started clicking. Oil was changed and lucas oil added. Car ran fine for approximately two weeks and then my 16 year old daughter (whom the car was purchased for) got in it from her summer job from the local ball stadium and it would not crank. The car was towed to a garage and he tells me that one of the timing belts broke and warped the cams and a new engine was needed. He said he had all kinds of reports stated that this was a defective engine and should have been recalled. They tell me it will cost 3-7 thousand to repair and I will still be getting a used "defective" engine and will be facing the same potential problem. Thank you in advance for your help. 2/21/10 2003 updated 04/14/10.

14 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 02/18/2008

I took my car to tuffy service center on 02/16/2008 to have my car serviced for a timing belt. After they changed the belt and put everything back . The odometer switched from mileage to kilometers. When talking to dealerships, they mention that they have seen this before and it is common. If it is common why they do not recall the vehicles and fix them.

15 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 12/06/2003

I finally got my Freelander back from over 4 months of waiting. My 2002 Freelander required a new engine after it was found that mud and/or debris had entered my timing belt enclosure and caused my engine to jump time and catostrophically destroy my engine valves and cylinder walls. A specific Land Rover dealer noted that "mud" was the total cause of my engine failure, when in fact it was a 1" x 1" hole in the timing belt enclsoure; this hole is a design flaw or oversight and thus allows any dirt/grime/debris/mud to enter and cause severe damage. Freelander never showed visible signs (meter or steam) that it was overheating. Insurance has covered this issue under a flood coverage and has fronted over $12,800 for a new engine. I haven't received any loss-use coverage for the 4 months. Upon inspection of my new 2003 engine, I found a new plastic piece that now covers the once 1" x 1" hole in the timing belt enclosure. This piece also has a piece number and costs appoximately $6. 00. Now you can see, a mere $6 item would have saved me and insurance over $13,000. Land rover has not initiated a recall or service bulletin to my knowledge; I suspect that this will only be installed on an as needed basis for those drivers who do use their Freelander as advertised by Land Rover. In a recent article in Land Rover chronicle, it was stated that the 2006 Freelander will have a better sealed engine compartment, due to the fact that most drivers are using their vehicles for off-road use (as advertised); they also state that this vehicle wasn't designed to match the discovery or defender. On top of it all, my front axle required replacement due to a new engine install (vibration problems), a new 02 sensor, plus I've noticed a small hand-sized dent on my hood (from closing). I still have problems of some sort since my service engine light it on now.
