The contact owns a 2004 Land Rover Freelander. The contact stated the casing on the engine cylinder was separated and was causing the engine to freeze. In addition, the engine oil and antifreeze was mixing together abnormally and causing the engine to fail. The dealer was contacted who advised that whenever the vehicle engine failed, that they should bring the vehicle in for repairs. The manufacturer was contacted who offered no assistance. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 69,000.
Land rover Freelander head gasket and engine failure.
I own a used 2004 Land Rover Freelander. While driving back from illinois during a snow storm the lr's window wipers stopped working. The windshield wipers stopped halfway during wiping and I was forced to click them on and off to get them to work. I am also experiencing coolant problems do to the faulty engine design the Land Rover is well aware of and refuses to fix. This problem will eventually lead to a required engine replacement that Land Rover is well aware of and refuses to accept responsibility for. The vehicle is maintained regularly as required by the owner's manual so its definitely a engine design problem. Consumers cannot be responsible for vehicle problems that result from matters out of their control. There is a reason lemon laws were enacted and a known engine design flaw that results in catastrophic engine failure before 75,000 miles is the manufacturer's responsibility, not that of the unsuspecting consumer. Only the full weight of the NHTSA addressing this engine problem with all 2002-2005 Freelander models will bring about a satisfactory resolution. Please have your officers investigate this matter, this is unacceptable to the american public in these challenging times.
Engine failure due to the use of varying alloys with different expansion properties used in engine manufacture. The design of engine includes metal sleeves that line the cylinder walls that when heated to normal operating temperature allow the sleeves to slide into the engine resulting in catastrophic engine failure. Lrna is been ware of this problem. The defect has been known since 2002 but it could range back to the 1990's and continued to manufacture the faulty engines. This defect is an accident waiting to happen. This failure leads to total power loss that in a snowy or icy conditions or heavy traffic at highway speeds inevitably cause serious accident resulting in an injury or death.

The contact owns a 2002 Land Rover Freelander. While driving approximately 25 mph on normal road conditions, the vehicle stalled. The engine failed to restart after several attempts. There were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. Roadside assistance was called to the scene and the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The technician stated that the failure was related to the cylinder and pistons. The vehicle is currently at the repair shop and has been there for one month waiting on the replacement parts. The technician discovered that the parts were discontinued by the manufacturer and the vehicle cannot be repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle has been repaired every month for one year for other defects prior to this recent failure. The VIN was unknown. The failure and current mileages were 93,000.

My 2002 landrover Freelander's engine failed at around 70,000 miles without any warning from the vehicles warning light system and just as the vehicle's original 5 year warranty ended. The dealers repair shop attributed the engine failure to overheating. Due to the manufacture discontinuing manufacturing this engine's the dealer had to locate a "rebuilt" engine as a replacement. The total cost of the "rebuilt engine and labor was an astounding $7,500. 00. Due to the high incident of this particular engine failing and the manufacturer not making the engine any longer it took around 3 months to procure a replacement "rebuilt" engine and install it. Also, the sunroof motor and the rear passenger window motor both failed and had to be replaced at a cost of around $1,200. 00. My dealer recommended that I join a class action law suite if I could find one dealing with this vehicle's clear lemon qualities. I understand from other Freelander owners the next thing to go will likely be the transmission. All of this leaves me with very little confidence in the vehicle's safety or reliability. I feel the out of pocket expenses for this engine replacement are unwarranted and should be the responsibility of the manufacture. On behalf of all Freelander owners who have had to replace the engine of this car please issue a recall of the engine and force the manufacture to take responsibility for their failure to produce and/or use a sound piece of equipment in this vehicle. Thank you.
The contact owns a 2004 Land Rover Freelander. The vehicle failed to start and was towed to the dealer. The dealer stated that there was engine failure due to a manufacturer defect that created a hole through the engine. After the repair was made, the transmission failed and the vehicle will not move. The current and failure mileages were 55,000. Updated.
Engine failure while driving.
Engine failed due to a design flaw. Needed to replace engine.
Loss power while driving resulting in having to replace engine. The engine was replaced and again while driving on 11/19/10 loss power. Engine has been diagnosed with engine failure. Failure occurred at 74639 miles.
2002 Land Rover Freelander. Transmission failed at 45,000 miles. Catastrophic engine failure at 55,000 miles. Vehicles stopped dead in the middle of rush hour traffic. Mechanics at the Land Rover dealership said that 100% of the Freelander model had the same transmission & engine failures.
My Land Rover Freelander has been in to the dealership for coolant smells coming into the cabin 20+ times and has never been repaired. They have replaced external parts, (reservoir tank, hoses and thermostats) and never fixed the problem. After researching the problem while it was still under warranty on my own, I found a complaint about head gasket problems with the k series engine and was told by the dealer that they new nothing about it, and you can't believe everything you read on the internet. Since then I called the CA bureau of automotive repair and had an agent investigate. The dealership offered to send it to another warranty shop which found a bad head gasket. I also called l/r direct to try and find out what they may be able to do for me. They told me they would not replace the engine because it cost $11,000 +, and the replacement engine will fail also. The engine was manufactured incorrectly at the factory. The cylinder sleeves are the wrong alloy and loosen when the engine is hot causing head gasket and eventually total engine failure. Land rover has known about this problem since 2004, technical bulletin #0036 and #0026 issued 06/18/2004. The manufacturer offered me $3500 to buy my car from me, and would not replace the engine. The vehicle only has 54,000 miles on it. This seems to be a safety hazard as well as a health issue from breathing in toxic fumes from the coolant. There have been other incidents with this vehicle which are to many to mention in this letter. Please contact ASAP about this matter.
My Land Rover Freelander has had 2 engine failures under 50k mi. , the first at 26k and the second 24k later. 2 sunroof replacements, 2 side window repairs, 1 overheating incident, and the car just runs hot all the time, with hot coolant smell.
