1 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 03/13/2009

I was driving home(logan) after driving from logan,ut. To layton,ut. When I heard a loud pop, the rpms redlined and the car stalled out. I pushed the car (1998 Mazda 626) to the side of the road, the car was smoking so I opened the hood and smelled transmission fluid, I looked under the car and seen transmission fluid leaking on the road. This car has had an external transmission fluid added and it has still gone out. I am trying to investigate the problem for myself and have not come to a conclusion yet. I do not have the money for the service to be don so I will try to contact Mazda or Ford to get the issue corrected, luckily I wasn't on a very busy highway or the problem could have possibly resulted in a serious accident or damage to myself or someone else.

2 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 07/30/2008

I have 103,000 miles. My transmission hasn't failed yet, which I now see I should feel lucky about. I have had all the other transmission issues I now find are common because Mazda put too small an engine into this car. I have had the o/d light flash on and off, the transmission be jerky, check engine light on. (this has gone on for several years now) I was told by a dealer I needed a range sensor and an aftermarket transmission cooler. I thought I had a leak of transmission fluid but it's just spewing up from the transmission overheating. Every time they change the fluid it gets worse. Now I can see from what others say that my transmission will no doubt fail soon. I had to find this out by going online; no Mazda repair shop ever told me any of this, until today when I was told that there was an "issue" with the 1998 transmission. Unbelievable. Mazda should have to do something since it's their design defect. I will never buy another Mazda!!!!!!! Toyota, here I come.

3 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 09/15/2007

2000 Mazda 626 experienced transmission failure around 70,000 miles. While driving on vacation I noticed some oil on the trunk after arriving at our destination. Before departing I had the car checked at a lube and tune center. Was informed that the transmission fluid was leaking and the likely cause was a loose drain plug. Plug was tightened and fluid was topped off. On the trip home smoke was visible from the rear of the vehicle. Other drivers brought this to my attention. After pulling over and discussing the matter with my mechanic on the phone, I elected to have the car towed to a transmission repair shop in the closest large city. I was told the transmission needed to be rebuilt. Apparently the seal between the two halves of the transmission ruptured. A small leak suddenly grew to a large leak on the trip and ruined the transmission. The technician said that he had been seeing 'more and more' of this problem with these transmissions. The tow was $500 and the rebuild was $2500. Time off work and a rental car for two weeks also were needed.

4 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 08/10/2007

Our Mazda 626 1999 was well maintained. At 72,134 miles I took it to a transmission place for a transmission flush. I drove home for 5 miles and in the evening on the freeway. The Mazda now felt a bit jerky at 55-60 mph. (I never noticed that before. ) after 23 miles the Mazda suddenly lost power and stopped. I was lucky to get to the side of the freeway without accident. I was stranded on the freeway in darkness and heavy traffic for 1 1/2 hours. Scary!!!! there was a long trail of transmission fluid behind the car, a puddle under the car, also under the hood and along the driver's side doors. The towing service noticed a disconnected transmission hose under the hood. I was towed home and the next morning to the Mazda dealer. They say I need a new transmission for $3225. The dealer says the 30a egi inj fuse is burnt. Fluid level of trans was at least 3 qts over full, was dark brown and had severe burnt smell. Fluid appears to have leaked out of cooler line and valve body pan due to high pressure. (I never saw a leak on our garage floor. ) transmission is stuck in reverse. (I don't know how it got into reverse from my driving on the freeway???) this is costing us big bucks and aggravation: new transmission, three times towing charges, diagnostic by dealer, transmission flush, rental car, loss of work. . . And no guarantee that things will be made good! after reading all the complaints about bad Mazda transmissions, I am not sure whether the fault here lies in a bad product (transmission) or bad workmanship with the transmission flush. Now the Mazda is back at the transmission service place that originally did the transmission flush, in hopes that they will make good. I could have been road kill! can somebody investigate and help?.

5 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2001 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 06/05/2007

The contact owns a 2001 Mazda 626. The contact stated that the vehicle has been leaking transmission fluid for a while. The dealer stated that the transmission casing was cracked and would cost $1,500 to repair. The dealer then stated that the cause of failure was the output seal. The third diagnosis was labeled as a faulty seal. The contact returned to the dealer three additional times because of the transmission leak. The dealer finally sent him to a transmission repair shop where he was told that the cause of failure was the axle sleeve. The leak has been repaired and now the overdrive light has begun blinking. The purchase date was unknown. The current mileage is 104,000 and failure mileage was 98,000.

6 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2001 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 08/09/2006

: the contact stated the vehicle stalled while stopped at a traffic signal. The vehicle was restarted and smoke was seen coming from under the hood. The vehicle was driven to an independent repair shop who determined the transmission had leaked fluid. The vehicle was later towed to another independent repair shop for further inspection, however no determination has yet been made on the cause of the leak. The dealer was not contacted.

7 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1996 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 05/10/2006

My 1996 Mazda 626 lx has 86k miles on it. I noticed a couple of months ago, it was leaking fluid (I thought it was oil), but it turned out to be transmission fluid, so I made an appointment to have it fixed. My car was finally fixed after almost 2-weeks in the shop and without a vehicle to drive. A couple weeks after having it repaired, and costing me $2,000 - I noticed that it is still leaking transmission fluid. My car gave me no warning (no lights ever came on saying there was a problem). Now, I am reading about thousands of other Mazda 626 owners having the same problem.

8 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2001 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 05/05/2006

1. 2001 Mazda 626 --- transmission failure. 2. Aamco #4660-- kept my car for 2 weeks. Different story/excuse for job not being completed. Didn't put it back properly, ended up with engine light on, transmission fluid spill on right side leaking down on the ground; hose not connected & cause for a 2nd transmission failure.

9 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1996 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 03/17/2006

Transmission has now went out twice in my 1996 Mazda 626 within a year. There were no warnings. It just happened! came to a light, stopped, light turned green started to accelerate and it acted like it was in neutral. Engine just revved up not going anywhere. In a panic, I pushed the o/d button off and it finally went into gear. The only time I could drive it with o/d on was if I was going over 50 mph. In the meantime. Driving with it off around town. When you started slow down almost before you came to a complete stop the car would jump like it was down shifting really hard. When driving it on the highway with o/d on. . . It was fine until you tried to pass someone or tried getting on the highway. The passing gear wouldn't work and acted as if it was in neutral again. Scared me to death! I was afraid to drive it. Afraid someone would hit me. Husband checked the trans. Fluid,,looked fine. . So we took it in, to cottmans, btw. . Don't ever use them. Ended up costing us $2800 for a rebuilt tranny. Now its a year later, spring break, me and my family out shopping and went to pass a car on the highway and it started doing the same thing again!! needless to say, we cut our outing short and went home. Called cottmans of course wouldn't hold up to the warranty. It went out a month to the day!!! we are not going to shell out money on the car again! I have done research, and it looks like there are millions of people having similar problems and have had them rebuilt several times only for it to fail over and over. Also, I have read other things about them. Which I thought was minor on my car. But after reading about the same problems others have I am going to list those as well. The accelerator pedal sticks, oil leak rear main seal, oxygen sensor doesn't work, cv joints bad. With all this said even though I loved my paid off Mazda, I wouldn't recommend buying a mazada. Now we are stuck going out doing the dreadful car shopping in which another mazada will be out of the question.

10 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2001 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 10/01/2005

Dt: the contact states he experienced a down shifting of the transmission while driving on the interstate. The transmission rapidly down shifted to a very low speed in a matter of seconds. This was the first incident of this type however he previously discovered there was some leakage of transmission fluid. He had the vehicle towed to his home. No repairs have been made at this time due to the expense.

11 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 07/30/2005

My car is Mazda 626 lx 1999 with 66k miles. This car has bad transmission. 1. From 30k miles. This car sometimes had transmission jerking 2. One day my wife drive this car. The she put shift on reverse, but the car was forward on flat parking lot. She shifted back on park then shifted on reverse again, the car was still forward. So she turned off the engine, then started the engine, the car worked fine. 3. July 30,2005. After driving one and half hours. The o/d off light came out, then the transmission began jumping and the car lost power. I took exit right away. I stop the car and took a look. I found white smoking and a lot transmission oil already spilled out. The transmission was overheated. For this car I took all maintenance service since I bought this car. Actually I found the transmission fluid leaked many times. I let mechanic guy checked. They didn't found anything wrong because I didn't drive the car more than one hour before checking.

12 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1997 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 07/23/2005

In Feb. 2005 I purchased a 97 Mazda 626 with 74000 miles on it. About 2 months later the check engine light came on. It started idling at 500-2500 rpms and had trouble switching gears. Around 75 mph it would cut out and drop to 60 mph before jerking back into gear. Last month my o/d off light came on and my car starting leaking transmission fluid. I had that fixed, had a new O2 sensor put in, and my o/d off light is still coming on. Now my overdrive doesnt work at all and I have trouble switching it out of low gears. I have been told I need a new transmission, after already putting a great deal of money into repairs. I have 84000 miles on it right now, and after seeing hundreds of other similiar complaints online, am outraged that Mazda is doing nothing as far as a recall.

13 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 07/07/2005

I bought a 1999 Mazda 626 lx in November of 1998. VIN 1yvgf22c3x5825750 about the time the warranty ran out I had taken my car into an oil change franchise. They suggested that I flush and renew the transmission fluid. So I did. That's when all the problems began. I then drove the car from NJ to FL where I lived. It started burning up a lot of oil so I took it into to Mazda. They said that it was well known that my make and model car runs hot. They said they could not see anything wrong with what the oil change franchise did. They recommended that I put a radiator on the transmission to keep it from boiling. . . Which is what it was doing. I believe it is the boiling transmission which has cause my engine to heat up so much that the oil has gunked my engine. Anyway, I took the car to a mechanic and they put in a radiator which seems to help some but now I'm continually having problems with the oil burning up without there being any leaks. I have continually had problems with the vehicle every since. In and out of the shops. No one seems to be able to get the car right. I have seen numerous reports of other Mazda owners having problems of this similar nature on the net. Mazda should take care of these problems and admit publicly that they've got problems with their vehicles and they should make it right.

14 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 06/28/2005

The transmission performed poorly. Been in the repair shop twice, the first time because it was leaking transmission fluid and jerking when accelerating past first gear. Had around 40,000 miles. Second time it had 54,000 miles for the exact same thing, and currently, the third time the vehicle was still leaking fluid and it will not go forward but will only going backwards. The first time was around 2001.

15 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 03/28/2005

I have had consistant transmission problems after around 50,000 mile. I have spent thousands of dollars taking the advice of Mazda transmission experts and other techs. I have experienced tranny leaks that would make the car look like it was floating on a cloud caused by the fluid falling on a hot exaust. Now at 104,000 miles right after having my seals changed the transmission apears to heat up within a few minutes and leaves me stuck in first gear hoping I can make it home. This transmission is garbage and has given me nothing but problems. Who ever let this engineering disaster be sold should pay for all the problems they have caused.

16 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 03/27/2005

O/d off light began flashing. Every time the vehicle shifted there was a loud bang. I brought it into a transmission repair center where they told me the transmission needed to be replaced. Fluid was leaking through the bushings and burning.

17 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1997 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 02/20/2005

I just bought a 1997 Mazda 626 it has about 97,000 miles on it and my transmission is already failing. The over drive light turns on and the transmission skips. The mechanic says its a sensor but its not. It's also leaking transmission fluid.

18 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1997 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 02/06/2005

Transmission fluid is leaking all the time. Had the transmission seal replaced, but it is still leaking. Leak is due to defective design of transmission (loose bearing), I was told. It sounds like I will have to get another transmission. This is unacceptable at 75k miles. This car is a lemon and is dangerous to drive when the transmission is likely to go out. The transmission needs to be recalled.

19 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 01/06/2005

Transmission fluid leaking out. This transmission shifts hard from first to second gear each and every time going up or down. Numerous mech's have looked at the problem and cannot fix.

20 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 12/22/2004

The od off light came on and started flashing, then there was smoke coming from the hood. The consumer exited the vehicle, popped the hood, and noticed transmission fluid everywhere. The consumer drove to a garage, but no leaks were found from the transmission.

21 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 10/01/2004

The automatic transmission is jerking and the check engine light is on and fluid is leaking on our 1998 Mazda 626 at 75,000 miles. (a common complaint. ).

22 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 05/25/2004

Transmission leaks fluid when driving more than 1 hour. Also, the overdrive light flashes.

23 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1996 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 05/19/2003

Less than a year a 3rd automatic transmission had to be replaced. The 2nd one failed while driving back from repair shop, car was leaking fluid. Repair shop diagnosed leaking transmission fluid, and recommended dealer replacement. Dealer service dept advised front pump failed, and replaced. This was now the 4th transmission on a car with exactly 60,000 miles. Front pump failed on this transmission after only 6,000 miles in one year.

24 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 02/10/2003

I have to had my transmission fixed 3 times now and it is currently leaking transmission fluid even after all the work I have done to it. I own a '98 Mazda 626 - there is certainly no sense in having so much trouble out of this car!.

25 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1996 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 11/24/2002

While driving the car on the expressway or anywhere for that matter the car engine light comes on and the "over drive off" light begins to blink and my overdrive turn off. I usually have to pull over to the shoulder or at a red light and turn the car off and back on to fix it. This is very unsafe and annoying because it happens almost everyday. I have to do this during rush hour on I-294 in chicago. I am reluctant to take it to Mazda repair because they charge $100 just to take the car in the shop and they try to find little ways to slap on a bigger bill. I had them change my transmission fluid and a week later it leaked and they told me there was a hole in the transmission. Apparently it was not there before the transmission fluid change and they did not notice it during. So I had them just refill it and I added sealant from auto zone. I checked my transmission fluid weekly and its just fine. Engine light comes and goes at will. There seems to be a problem with the computer chip or something which is Mazda's fault and I should not have to pay to replace or fix. Everything on the car is stocked and I maintain the car better than Mazda suggests. I check all fluids, oil change every 2000 miles, etc. . . I know that many people (thousands of them) that have the same problems with the engine lights and the "over drive off" light blinking.

26 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 1997 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 07/01/2001

The vehicle began shifting very roughly, then the overdrive started blinking and the vehicle ceased to shift, I was stuck in 3rd gear. There was a small "bang" in the engine compartment, then check engine light illuminated. I pulled over to a fuel station and opened the hood. There was transmission fluid all over the interior of the engine compartment, 1+ quarts. I could find no obvious leaks, but purchased some additional fluid and refilled what was lost. Since then whenever it is warm out or the car is driven for over an hour in temperatures above ~50 f, it shifts very rough and the od light and check engine light come on. I have since learned that this is a very common problem among 2. 0l Mazda 626's with an automatic transmission. They apparently overheat very easily. I have been told I am lucky that the transmission has not failed on me. I've taken it apart and cleaned it out several times. I also change the transmission fluid frequently. These above average maintenance routines are likely what has kept the transmission from failing altogether. The vehicle is barely tolerable to drive when it is having these problems as it will slam into the next gear hard enough to jerk the occupants forward or backward.
