1 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 01/01/2017

Since owning the Mazda 626 I have had a very big problem the transmission slipping. It will slip going into second gear. If its below 60 degrees the car wont shift into drive until the motor gets hot enough. The car is like this every single day and does it every time it is driven. Also the interior lights work somtimes on and off and the back windows wont roll down from the driver button.

2 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 01/21/2012

Purchased used Mazda 262, year 2000, that happened to have original known-faulty cd4e. Car now inoperable after less than a thousand miles after leaving the lot. Occasional acceptable operation, interspersed with transmission slipping/losing gear/no power, nearly caused a rear-end accident going uphill on freeway.

3 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2001 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 02/28/2011

I bought this car used a year ago this month when my daughters car engine locked up. She was out of state so it was a hurry up thing over the phone. She didn't realize the transmission was slipping in first gear, thought it was cv joint. Shop diagnosed the transmission. This really makes me sooo mad as this is a nice car. I think Ford should pay to replace all the transmissions in these cars. Now I have to either dump it at a loss or pay out alot to get transmission repaired .

The contact owns a 2001 Mazda 626lx. The contact was driving approximately 10 mph when the transmission began to slip with severe hesitation. The vehicle was diagnosed by two different independent mechanics who advised the contact that the transmission was defective and would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 123,000.

6 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2002 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 12/23/2009

Transmission failure, 2002 Mazda 626 4cyl. Transmission began slipping and shifting hard between 2nd and 3rd gears. 97,000 miles but had regular "harsh conditions" maintenance as it was being operated in the az desert heat. Transmission was rebuilt but now shifts hard 1st to 2nd in addition to 2nd and 3rd despite being sent back. There are widespread failures of 626 transmissions but Mazda was never forced by the government to issue a recall. The transmission is too small for the weight of the vehicle per some reports. $2,500 for rebuilt transmission. I've never had a automatic transmission go out this soon and I have been driving for 35 years.

7 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 06/23/2009

Transmission is failing in my 2000 Mazda 626. Everything I read about the issue tells me that the Ford transmission in the Mazda was not made to handle a vehicle that size. The gears are slipping hard enough to make the car jump. I cannot safely drive this car anywhere since there are also changes in velocity due to the slipping.

8 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 06/10/2009

Transmission failure, Mazda 626, year 2000. This is the second failure. Following computer codes led to $800 in unnecessary repairs. Car drives well until o/d begins to flash, rpm fluxes between 1000 and 5000 and tranny slips. On parking and shutting off motor then restarting and shifting into drive tranny slams into gear with a bang. Never know when rpm is going to go crazy and the transmission to slip. This causes a mad scramble to get to the side of the road which is sometimes hard as you may be in the passing lane. Cost estimates range from $1800 + 400 600 for install for a rebuilt transmission from a dealer of transmissions specifically for this car. This model/transmission combination is used on about the 10 preceding years. Taken together they present a good case for a dealer recall I would think. Even though Mazda issued a TSB it is only meant to delay the problem until ultimate transmission failure.

9 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 04/23/2009

2000 Mazda 626dx 4cyl. With 93,200 miles and the automatic transmission failed. Vehicle is maintained exceptionally well and all filters and fluids changed regularly. Transmission slips between shifting gears and erratically shifts from high to low with dramatic loss of power.

Gears began slipping and then transmission completely failed.

11 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 08/15/2008

1999 Mazda 626: the drive chain inside the transmission was slipping. When you put it in gear, and tried to go, you could here it jumping over the teeth on the sprocket. The transmission had to be rebuilt.

12 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 09/07/2007

My transmission slips, and will not go into first or second gear. Car is in perfect shape, completely maintained throughout lifetime, and only has 104,000 miles. Transmission must be replaced.

13 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 07/31/2007

'99 Mazda 626-lx, 4-cyl. Transmission problem: day 1, stuck in traffic, moving very slowly for 30 minutes, 80 degrees outside, the transmission started feeling "clunky". Day 2, driving 72-78 mph on the highway for 3 hours, the "o/d off" light started to blink. Got home fine. Day 3: significant transmission slippage.

14 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2002 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 05/04/2007

Purchased a used 2002 Mazda 626 and the transmission was slipping. The wrrranty company denied there was a problem , and this car was under warranty at the present time. Meanwhile the car has been sitting for a week and nothing has been done on the vehicle.

15 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 10/15/2006

Driving down the highway during normal rush hour traffic, transmission starts to slip. Car goes slower and slower until it finally won't move at all. Had transmission fluid changed at regular 30k intervals. Car was taken to a local transmission shop where I was told that the trans was shot, ruined, kaput, etc. . . Estimate of $2500. Have been informed that this is a very common failure in my car. And the dealer refuses to help or even talk about helping on the repair cost. My car only has 89k on it!! now the car is sitting in my driveway collecting dust, I don't have $2500 to fix a problem that the manufacturer is well aware of since most Mazda 626's are having this failure.

16 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 08/28/2006

Vehicle downshifted to 2 while I was driving at 70-75 mph. Caused vehicle to skid on wet road! while crossing an intersection, transmission started slipping and almost caused a multiple vehicle accident.

17 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 05/31/2006

I own a 2000 Mazda 626, for the last week and a half the vehicle has been at the montgomery Mazda (charlotte, nc) dealership twice and it is still not repaired. The first time I took it, I clearly told them that while driving the vehicle began to act as if it is trying to change gears but can't (automatic transmission and I am already in going 45 mph so it should be in the 5th gear) the rpms go up to 4 and then it jerks (hard) when it catches up and the rpms drop. They claimed that it needed a tune up, new spark plug wires (I already replaced these twice) and a new fuel filter. I spent $356 to get all of this done and on the way to work the car did the same thing again. I called them back and told them that the problem was still not fixed and they claimed that they didn't know what it could be. I took the car back again that following Monday at 7:30 am (originally took it there on Thursday, June 1, 2006) and they claimed that they were going to look at the vehicle and find out what the problem is. After waiting for about 5 hours I called since I didn't hear anything from them and another service person told me that my car had just been sitting there. When I went to pick it up, then they told me that it might be the engine relay or maybe the transmission. I asked them if they checked it they stated no. I took the vehicle to another transmission place and the person stated that it was low on transmission fluid and that was the problem but after they fixed that the car was still doing the same thing. I looks as if I will need a new transmission. Every mechanic I have talked to since thinks it is the transmission, I found that Mazda released a bulletin telling the their mechanics what to do if od off light is flashing after long driving and the transmission is slipping and the Mazda service department didn't even mention it and I clearing told them that it only does it after I have been riding for a while.

18 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2001 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 03/08/2006

1-complete transmission failure, car would slightly move under gas. Gave no warning. Transmission failure at 65,000 mi. - rebuilt at an aamco transmission - cost approx. $2,000. 00. Complained to consumer reports who gave car best buy rating - no negative rating on transmission. 2-rebuilt transmission started to slip - had trans shop check out, problem due to transmission failure of rebuilt transmission. This happened just this last week at 88,000 mi. Rebuilt at stop and go transmission. Cost to me approx $2,400. 00 3- noticed mildew smell in car - discovered trunk leak noticed at 65,000mi. 2in. 19 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 01/15/2006

Faulty automatic transmission in Mazda 626. This will be my second transmission failure. Both transmissions began slipping and overheating many miles before failure. The dealer never informed me of any bulletins or problems with the transmissions.

20 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 1997 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 01/10/2006

1997 Mazda 626, transmission replaced by Mazda due to extended warranty at approximately 100,000 miles. Vehicle now has 183,000 miles and the transmission is slipping again. I have had this car garaged for 2 years as the cost of replacing the transmission again is prohibitive. Replaced trans fluid with synthetic and it runs better however if I had know their was a problem with the transmission for this car I would have sold it a long time ago and would have installed a transmission cooler when it was replaced. The state should order a recall or you would think there would be a group of attorney's who would like to file a class action suit against Mazda!!!.

21 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 01/02/2006

(1) the transmission started slipping at 120000 miles when accelerating hard (2) I had the car checked out prior to departing for my cross-country trip from FL to CA, only to find out that I did not have the time nor money to replace the transmission; I had to take my chances and barely made it. The car now cannot be driven, it cannot make it up a hill, and I'm stuck with no transportation. (3) nothing has yet been done; I'll be dropping the car off either at a mechanic to get it fixed (if I can get a credit card) or at a dealer as a trade-in for another car.

22 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 10/27/2005

The contact stated while driving the transmission started to slip and would not accelerate. The vehicle was parked and has not been to a mechanic at this time. Updated 2/7/2006 - the vehicle was taken to a technician who determined that the transmission needed to be rebuilt.

23 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 10/01/2005

24 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 09/03/2005

The transmission started slipping 2 days after I bought the car. As I was driving home from the store the transmission stopped responding while I was driving. After this the car did move in any gear. I since then have had the transmission rebuilt.

25 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2002 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 06/30/2005

No crashes or injuries just yet, but I purchased a 2002 Mazda 626 brand new after I was talked into it by the dealership. I had a 2001 626 with a manual transmission that I brought in to be serviced by the dealership (five star Mazda). They told me that they could get me into a brand new 626 with an automatic transmission for less per month than I was paying at the time. Being young, and just purchased a home with one child and another on the way, I jumped at the idea of decreasing the amount of our bills. I also thought it would be easier to deal with two little ones if I didn't have to fool with a manual transmission. I sure wish I'd have kept that car now!! one year following the expiration of the warranty (2005), you guessed it, the transmission started to slip. When I took it into five star Mazda, they charged me $90 to run diagnostics on the car (even though according to numerous internet posts, they already new the problem!) at any rate, they contacted me later that day to let me know that it would be nearly $3000 to repair the transmission, and would I like to keep it there to have it done. Hello, let me just climb up my money tree and hand it right over!!! we recently filed a bankruptcy and are unable to just go get a loan or put it on a credit card, we would be in contempt of court. There is absolutely nothing we can do about this. I'm sorry, but Mazda has known of this problem since 1993? why hasn't something been done about this? the consumer should not have to pay for their mistake! especially given the fact that I still have to pay on the loan, I simply do not have the extra money to even save up for repair bills costing the amount of another car!! the car worsens daily, and given the fact that it takes an incredible amount of time to build up speed, if a car is even in sight range of mine, I cannot drive out in front of it.

26 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 06/01/2005

The consumer stated while accelerating the transmission slipped. There was a slight chattering noise. Once the vehicle was in gear it worked correctly. A local mechanic changed the spark plugs and the wires. Also, checked the cv joints and they were fine. The mechanic had not looked at the transmission. He eliminated all of the other things first. This has been happening for about three or four months. (11/17/05) the mechanic suggested that the automatic transmission was the problem.

27 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 05/12/2005

Transmission quit working while the consumer was driving. She was less than ã‚â½ mile from home when this occurred. The consumer had the transmission replaced by her mechanic. The new transmission was purchased from Mazda. The new transmission has slipped twice. The vehicle jerked while trying to accelerate. The consumer took vehicle to a dealership and they ran a diagnostic test. They found nothing, and that there should be a warning light coming on if anything was working. There were no other problems with the vehicle at this time.

29 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 1997 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 03/13/2005

The transmission is slipping either by overheating or bad transmission by Mazda, and my car only has 119,000 miles on it. I'd like to know when are they recall all the 626's and fix the problem, or I'll sue the company. This is so unfair that they stop making 626's, for what reason.

30 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

34 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 08/11/2004

1998 Mazda 626 - transmission started slipping and finally gave out. Also was not the first transmission rebuilt received directly from Mazda that has given out, but was not reported the first time due to the fact I thought it was a regular problem caused on my part. Recently had to pay $3000+taxs to replace transmission and labor charges. There has to be something done about Mazda and there vehicles because they are useless pretty much and should be recalled. .
