I have a 1998 Mazda 626 4cyl. Automatic transmission. I have had numerous problems with this transmission, I have had the torque converter replaced, along with fluid flushes and even some electrical connections replaced and now the car sits in my driveway with a perfect motor and when its in reverse it is in drive, there is no reverse anymore. I have spent thousands of dollars trying to get this fixed and I am on a fixed income and need help repairing it.

I was driving the car at 75 mph on the freeway, when all of a sudden, the transmission basically went into neutral. Traffic was light, and I was able to cost to the right shoulder of the freeway. I was unable to get the car to work in any gear (r, d, 1, 2). The car was towed to a local transmission shop for repairs. The shop discovered that the torque converter had a catastrophic failure and littered metal parts through the entire transmission. The entire transmission had to be required at the cost of $2,212.
2001 Mazda 626 with an automatic transmission. I purchased the car from a Mazda dealer, it was a 1 owner trade-in with only 25,000 original miles. The vehicle went through a 100 point inspection from their service department. I only had the car for 5 days before the transmission went out. When I placed the transmission in reverse or drive, it just remained still as if it was still in park or neutral, it was towed to a Mazda dealer and diagnosed with a torque converter failure. This is apparently a major issue with most Mazda 626's, old and new!.

In late January of 2007 I purchased a 1999 Mazda 626 for my daughter for her to use in the years she would be in college. The vehicle had approximately 79,000 miles on it. She has driven the car to college and back and forth to work. On November 12, 2007 she was driving south on a busy highway in tulsa, oklahoma. Suddenly the vehicle lost power and would not go any further or go in reverse. We had the vehicle towed to a transmission shop that was recommended by our mechanic. The transmission shop completely overhauled the transmission replacing factory parts that the owner said were deficient with better parts. The parts that the shop used were an:
overhaul kit
valve body repair kit
solenoid pack
torque converter
reverse drum
forward piston
I am very disappointed in the failure of this vehicles transmission. I have never had a car that had a transmission problem. I have been made aware since the failure of this transmission that this is a problem that has been frequently a problem on the Mazda 626 model.

Driving to work one day in normal traffic when was unable to accelerate past 55 to pass other cars in traffic. Then when I stopped at light I was unable to accelerate at all leading to the car not being able to more in any direction other than reverse. Car required a new torque converter, pressure plate, forward drum, and the assembly kit. Total cost from aamco was 1830 before I had them replace transmission mount and drivers side trans axle.
I have a 1997 Mazda 626 that the o/d light has begun flashing and the engine light has come on. After the o/d light comes on the transmission begins getting jerky. The error codes indicate a torque converter problem in the transmission. I have 99,500 miles on the car and had the transmission oil changed at 75,000 miles because I read that these cars have a history of bad transmissions. I called two Mazda dealers and they told me these cars have bad transmissions and it will cost around $3,000 to replace.
Hard shifting for a couple of weeks. Had a blow out same night transmission messed up. Won't go into gear until it past 2. 5 rpm's. Took to transmission spec. Said it was over heating also need a new torque converter, need to install transmission cooler.
I am having problems with my automatic transmission in my Mazda 626 lx 1996 model. I bought this used car on Jan 2006 and it started to give problems by showing o/d lights off. Then check sign popped up and I fixed that one. Again popped up and found torque converter failure. I took it to transmission shop and they quoted $1700 to change the transmission. In online, I read many complaints about transmission and it advised to use this site to file a complaint against Mazda company. Many people had the same problem like me and this raises safety aspect of this vehicle, which is a manufacturing defect. Though I haven't invested any money now to change transmission but I am seeking whether Mazda company is providing any alternative change or offer to their customer related to transmission.
At 62,000 miles overdrive light began flashing, transmission began shifting like a worn out 3 speed, diagnosed by several shops. I was told transmission has a design flaw, sell car before major problems occur. Repaired transmission, valve body and solenoid pack, torque converter replaced. 1,500 dollars total. At 100,000 miles same problem except I have no forward or reward motion. Car is sitting under my carport, cost to repair 2,500 dollars requires a transmission.
1. Mazda transmission: can not change the filter. Only during the rebuilding of the transmission can the filter be changed. 2. Plugged filter causes the torque converter to destruct at any time. The car can stall any where anytime. 3. Was replaced with rebuilt transmission at a cost of 2500. 00.

While driving, my '98 626lx the transmission will disengage from the engine. Aamco transmission determined the problem to be that due to excessive heat, the torque converter failed and fragments penetrated the transmission while being suspended by the transmission fluid. No less than $2000 to repair. Here's where I really got upset. Mazda published a technical service bulletin-005/02 in 2002 which outlines preventive measures to take to avoid this heat related failure. When contacted about a claims procedure, they told me that there was no such bulletin and that there was no recall for my vehicle. I understand that failures do occur on vehicles. However, when the manufacturer is aware of the issue and fails to even make a cursory effort to inform the vehicle owner/purchaser, it seems to me that the company is negligent and should in part bare the burden of the cost of repair.
I brought my 1996 Mazda 626 into hoehn Mazda of carlsbad, CA for a specific code (p0441-evap emissions control-incorrect purge flow). The dealership mechanic pulled a code of p0741- slipping torque converter. They said I would need a transmission replacement (which would be the third or fourth for this vehicle). I stated that may be a problem since the overdrive light had been blinking and also stated that there was a service bulletin on these particular transmissions. Soon after I checked my car's VIN number on carfax and noticed a note placed by Mazda that this car had no recalls on it. Hoehn Mazda told me that this was a good thing as it meant that my particular type car was ok. I interpreted it to mean that this was a warning to dealerships not to do any "free work" on my Mazda. These Ford transmissions (cd4e) really do need a recall. I believe the fix is a better pump (sonnax) and have seen many, many complaints regarding this particular transmission over the years. I just want to add my own complaint and dissatisfaction with this particular dealerships treatment of a customer. They never diagnosed the original p0441 complaint and charged me $88 for the advice on replacing my transmission. How was this transmission treated? fluid change annually or even more often; driven extremely gently, and failed like clockwork.
Automatic transmission failure (twice). First time transmission went out was at 107,105 miles. I paid for the removal, rebuilding, and re-installing of my transmission. Parts replaced were, torque converter, mokcd4e, shift kit, filter inside, washer dir drum, sprag fwd, drum fwd, direct shell, t/bearing kit, bushing kit. Total cost $1701. 82. Now at 138, 652 miles my transmission has went out again and has been in the shop for over a week. This time it will cost me $700. 00.
First incident: 9/2/had to have transmission completely rebuilt after it failed on @ 61,360 miles. Replaced master o/h kit, torque converter, direct housing, shift kit, hub, chain, band, oil filter, oil. $ 2,062. 70.
I own a 99 Mazda 626 w/ 120k miles on it. On new years day I was driving home on a highway and the check engine light came on. About 20 minutes later the car started revving up persistently. It seemed like the transmission was slipping. Quickly the car acted like it was in neutral in all the gears. There was enough momentum to get the car to a side road. Luckily I was nearly home. I had the car towed to a local transmission place to get looked at. The final quote was about $3000 dollars. Supposedly the transmission pump went out and the tranny burned up. The torque converter, solenoid block, 4 gears, and all the bushings need to be replaced. I thought this was just bad luck but after checking online I found that transmission failures were common for 93-2001 Mazda 626's. Apparently there have not been enough complaints or publicity for Mazda to issue a recall, yet they stopped producing the vehicle due to problems with the transmission.
Transmission suddenly would not change into high gear and had no reverse. The next day it was worse. I took it to aamco and they did a complete rebuild of transmission and torque converter to the tune of $2,000.
Transmission failure on 97 Mazda 626 automatic transmission after approx 15000 miles.
A month after we bougth this car we've had problems with the transmission. We've replaced two O2 sensors ($300. 00 each) and the torque converter valve ($450. 00). Check engine light stays on, stating problem inside transmissions. Now overdrive light comes on and blinks when it comes on and starts to blink this means the transmission is melting and your car will quit on you while your driving down the road. Also, when you press on the gas the rpm's top out but the speed doesn't increase. I had the gas pedel all the way to the floor board and the car had no power. Hopefully, this problem with the transmission failure will be resolved by you, since Mazda see's nothing wrong with building cars that can possibly hurt or kill someone.
(1) transmission fluid leak. . . O/d light flashing off and on, car smoking and overheating; (2) transmission overhaul. . . $2000 plus $115 tow bill; (3) still not corrected. . . But so far new sprage front planetary, torque converter, tec valves, retainer for sprage, thrust beaning.
Repeated failure of cd4e automatic transmission and torque converter. Dates - 11/02/2004 and 08/29/2006. Both times transmission was reconditioned by local repair shops (middletown transmission amd mecca transmission, inc).
Everytime I drive the overdrive light comes on and while driving it hesitste on freeyway I check to the mechenic he say its transmission problem and it is the problem with mazada 626 and never been corrected and they didnt buil t it correctly so I think mazada should bring them back.
While driving on the highway, I stopped for fuel. I got in the car to leave and it would not move. Had the car towed to aamco . Transmission and torque converter were repaired. Two weeks later, I had to return to aamco and the torque converter was again replaced. This is a well maintained car and not abused. There was no warning that something was wrong. Aamco said the transmission had overheated causing the failure. There was no apparent slippage prior to the event.

The over drive light in my 2000 Mazda 626 4 cylinder kept coming on and it would lose power after I drive for about 20 miles on the highway, when I pull over, shut off the engine and start the car,the od light would go off and the car would run normally. The transmission was also hesitating. Finally the over drive light came on and the transmission failed, the car had 79,705 miles. I had the car towed to a garage where it was determined that the direct clutch hub & shell, solenoid assembly, drive chain and forward torque converter failed. The transmission was rebuilt with brand new parts and the radiator was changed. This appeared to resolve the problem.
Automatic transmission failure at 41,000 miles.
1996 Mazda 2. 0 626 lx. Overdrive flashes from 4th to 3rd. Multiple attempts to fix/find problem to no satisfaction. Mazda dealer advised new transmission needed-sight unseen. Seems to be a more than prevelant situation.
Hello, I am writing to inform you of a transmission problem I have with my madza 626. I have taken it to my mechanic and have talked to 3 others and they all tell me the same thing. This is a common problem with the automatic transmission on the madza 626. I bought my car new in 2001 and it has almost 99,000 miles. I have been told that it will cost me $2500-3000 to fix it. My mechanic says it will be cheaper for me in the long run to trade it in and get a new car. I am forced to get a new car because my 2001 madza 626 does not run. This car needs to be recalled.
My 1996 Mazda 626 had been experiencing trouble shifting and the o/d off light kept flashing so I took it in to the dealership. I was told that the transmission was about to go. I found this really strange since the car only has 81k miles on it and I thought Mazda was supposed to be really reliable. . Read more...
Transmission problems for the second time within the past 5 years. It was replaced on 09/01 at 47,544 miles, my check engine light came on and when I took my car to the shop they said that, the transmission was going out; the invoice states that the fluid was burnt and the torque converter was slipping. The second incident occurred on 9/23/03, coming from out of town, the overdrive light started flashing and stayed on for about 45 minutes so I stopped at a gas station and turned the car off, when I restarted the car I noticed smoke coming from under the hood. I raised the hood of my car and noticed some fluid coming out on the driver's side near the windshield and when a gentlemen came over to help, he told me that it was the transmission fluid overflowing. When I took my car to a repair shop I was told that pressure was building up in the transmission, the torque converter was replaced and I had to pay $2178. 00.
Transmission breakdown. Back on April 07, 2003, I brought my 1998 Mazda 626 into a transmission repair shop to get my vehicle fixed. I was told the transmission was toast. It had overheated and burnt up most of the internals. I ended paying for a rebuilt unit, a new torque converter, and a drive chain. The total out of pocket expense was $1272. 00 now exactly three years down to the month I'm starting all over with the same problems. The transmission is going downhill again. Fortunately this time I parked it in the driveway and haven't fixed it yet. I am currently researching the problem and it appears to be a nationwide problem, yet nothing is being done about it.
'96 Mazda 626 (bought new) . Transmission failed at 83,000+/_ mi. Initially took car to a dealer for oil leak (replaced oil pressure switch). They brought car to me, it started & died repeatedly. The speedometer needle jumped all around the dial and odometer would spin, adding mileage. Service writer said the service tech. Noticed the problem when working on it/they could check it out for additional $75 fee. I told her I hadn't had that problem before. She said they didn't repair anything in the area of transmission or speedometer that they might have damaged to cause this. I spoke to the tech. & he had no idea what the problem might be. He opened the hood and checked something as I talked to the service writer and started the car and it ran okay. While driving home, speedometer needle intermittently did the same thing, adding extra mileage, but drove ok. On another day, after driving approx. 15 - 25 mi. & return home, car won't run after stop and restart try. Turned the ignition/speedometer needle jumped all around the dial/the odometer spun/added mileage/car not moving. It starts and dies repeatedly. After sitting a few hours, it starts & drives ok. Drove to another dealer; they say problem won't manifest while they had it. Report: moisture in sensor contacts/dried them & car ok. Drove car home. The next time that I drove the car; same thing happened. Towed it back to the dealer. Their report report: transmission shot/torque converter falling apart & that caused all the problems. $2,900 for madza re-built trans. While researching this, I find that madza 626 (& other models) is notorious for transmission failures. I feel madza is aware of inferior and apparently defective transmissions in their cars. It seems that their replacement transmissions develop same or additional problems and have to be replaced repeatedly. Madza should recall and repair/replace them.
I own a 1997 Mazda 626 lx, which I bought used with 36,000 miles. At approximately 60,000 miles the transmission seized up, stranding my wife and I. Had car towed to dealership, where they informed us we needed a new transmission. Their exact words were: "we have good news and bad news. The bad news is that your warranty has expired. The good news is that we have a new transmission in stock. " we then shopped around and found a less expensive transmission shop that gave us a one year guarantee, and came recommended by a mechanic friend of ours. One year and two weeks later, the transmission is overheating on long drives, spewing transmission fluid out the vent cap. Mechanics tell us we need a new torque converter, they think. In any case, we'll probably need another transmission soon. We're dumping the heap and buying a Toyota camry. I'm appalled to see page after page of nearly identical complaints about the 1994 - 1998 626s. Mazda does not acknowledge the problem. How dare Mazda/Ford do this to hard working folks who just want to drive a dependable vehicle?.
Consumer states when the vehicle accelerates the transmission makes a clicking noise and jerks into gear. The torque converter was turning back and forth instead of one way which would cause the transmission to fall out. The dealer was informed. Please provide more information. Mr.
