I had to have the transmission replaced at 34,600 miles of normal city driving. The warranty was for 3 years/36,000 miles. (I was about 6. 5 months past warranty timewise) the mechanics who replaced it said that the front pump was scored, and that metal bits from it came out from the torque converter and lodged in the pressure valve, which was stuck. Also, the chain was stretched. Dt.

O/d light starts blinking at highway speeds. When blinking the transmission shifts harshly in first and second gear. The problem can be corrected by turning of the engine. I took it to a Mazda dealer and they stated that the torque converter was sticking, and a new transmission is needed at a cost of approximately $2,800. This is a replacement transmission, the original was replaced at approx. 25,000. There appears to be something defective about this transmission or else it would not be failing so often.

Check engine light came on - dealer says that if car is running okay that no service needed?????? finally get it checked out and turns out that cat converter is going bad. Barely get that repaired under warranty limit. Same day, driving home from dealer, engine light comes back on. Bring it back to dealer, they say air flow meter is also bad and needs to be replaced, but not covered under warranty. At least engine light stays off now. Then, at only 78k, o/d light starts blinking along with check engine light. Shop says that it's transmission (torque converter). Why are so many of these units failing so early? only 78k on car, more than half of them are from pure hwy trips of 45 miles?????? why isn't Mazda doing anything for consumers about this?.

1997 626 Mazda transmission! this transmission will not hold up! I've had it replaced 2 times (over $3400) and the previous owner once. It went out with me at 66k. It's acting up again and I'm told the need $2500 more to correct the problem. The transmission shops have told me the transmission is a piece of junk! it's been parked for over a year because I can't afford the repair bill and also I can't in conscious sell to any other poor soul!.
Torque converter clutch failed causing a jerk feeling when the transmission shifts. Nlm.
Transmission locked up while driving at 45 mph , vehicle came to a dead stop with engine running. Front wheels locked up, and would not move due to torque converter failure. Engine would stall during right turns, dealer reset computer, then engine light illuminated, dealer stated the torque converter clutch was slipping, transmission locked up on the way to a dealership for replacement of torque converter clutch, a new transmission was installed and 20 miles later the od off light illuminated, vehicle started smoking and losing power, this time dealer stated the cooling system in the radiator was not large enough to cool the transmission, an external cooling system was installed, now transmission needs replaced again, consumer requests that vehicle be replaced or repurchased by the dealer.
The catalytic converter malfunctioned. Also, torque converter became defective, resulting in major transmission problems.
