Overdrive Light On Problems of Mazda 626 - part 1

Transmission o/d lights flashing and does not move in the first gear or shift to second either has happened on free way also which is very dangerous. My wife drives with kids.

The contact owns a 1999 Mazda 626. The contact stated hat the overdrive warning light illuminated sporadically, causing the vehicle to shift from fourth to second gear. As a result, the transmission was destroyed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was advised that the overdrive failure ruined the motor and that the transmission would need replacing. I bought a Mazda 626 1998 and it had 116,000 miles on it the transmission o/d light began to flash and then it started shifting hard then oil started to burn and I had to install a external transmission cooler this only lasted for a while and then the transmission shifted hard and oil went everywhere.

Hi I have a 1996 Mazda 626 lx and the o/d light just went off at 167,000 miles. I read several forums online and they all said its most likely a an electrical problem in the transmission. This can be very dangerous to us drivers as well as drivers next to us on the road. I advice to please have Mazda recall all models with this problem and reimburse us or fix our transmissions at no cost. Thank you very much for reading my post.

105,626 original mileage. Coming from a long highway drive. Car began to rev really high. Transmission was slipping. O/d light began blinking. Crawled the vehicle to repair shop. Was told there was a complete failure of the transmission. Transmission was rebuilt.

The o/d off light on vehicle flashes. I now understand that this is a common problem that is known to Mazda. Mazda should take responsibility and recall the transmission in these vehicles. This vehicle is used by my kids for transportation to and from school. They are at risk.

Purchased a 1999 Mazda 626 in February of 2003 with 28,000 miles. Car has been great until recently in 2009 the transmission has started to develop problems. It now slips in second gear, I cannot drive on the interstate for fear that the infamous o/d off light will start to flash and leave me stranded in the middle of nowhere. This occurs sometimes after a short period of maybe 30 minutes or more driving 70 mph, and sometimes at 65mph. When it does happen, the car looses power, and burns up the transmission fluid. Also when it happens, you risk the chance of nearly blowing the transmission, being run off the road, being forced to stop in the middle of nowhere, and being in a serious accident, because the car all of sudden stops moving!this is so sad that I cannot really enjoy my vehicle, as well as many others here! Mazda has not even acknowledged the other recalls on this vehicle, and they don't stand behind their product. Mazda is a poor investment, and they need to issue a recall on these transmissions that they know are a piece of crap! I will never ever buy another Mazda again!.

Mazda 626 1997 4 cylinder transmission problem once the o/d off light came on. When I shift into reverse, sometime it does not move. After driving for a few minutes the car jerks and struggles with erratic shifting of gears. This is accompanied by an increase in the engine rpm and noise. Car still drives but may not be safe. Check engine light shows fault with transmission range switch.

2002 Mazda 626 transmission burnout. Purchased used Mazda with 138000 miles, previous owner said he'd replaced the transmission once before. At around 160 k miles my transmission went out, I had a shop replace with rebuilt trans, but more problems resulted. 2000 dollars later, plus rental car fees and the "new" transmission is on the blink still, has been back in the shop three times. Symptoms are well documented in the internet, bucking, no power, high rpm's, flashing o/d light, spewing oil. If this car is ever drivable again I will sell and never buy Mazda again.

The Mazda 626 transmission is not known for its reliability. It fact, there have been numerous complaints about problems encountered with the Mazda 626 transmission. A common problem on the vehicle is the failure of the automatic transmission. When this fails, this may cause the overdrive light to flash. Other problems include slipping and vibration. Not understanding why there are no recalls on this product being that this has been going on for years why is Mazda not liable for this issue. . . . . . .

I drove my 1997 Mazda 626 for a day after I bought it from a used car salesman as is. All of a sudden the o/d off light came on and on, then parked it, and just 20 mins later I could not reverse it. When I shift into neutral it acts as if its in drive and neutral in reverse and drive is drive. I've read online about people with the same car having the exact same problems and was told to file a complaint here. Please bring Mazda to justice on their 626 trannys!!.

I purchased my 626 in 2003. I wish I would have done research beforehand. I installed a transmission oil cooler the same week. I'm also religious about changing the fluid. I only drive in town, less than 10 miles per day. My o/d light started blinking as I was driving at 25 mph. I stopped at a light to make a turn and my car would not drive. The transmission would not allow the car to move forward. I shut the car off hoping that when I started it again that it would go. Thankfully it went this time and I made it home. The light has blinked before but always turned off, now its on steadily. I have been feeling the transmission slipping very frequently over the past few months. With all the problems, why is there not a recall?.

I bought a 2001 Mazda 626 in 2002 with 23,000 miles up until now haven't had any problems. I was driving down the freeway and my overdrive light started blinking, the car made it home I took it to the shop and they said my transmission needed to be rebuilt. There is only 117,000 miles on the car, so I got online and searched the problem and come to find that there are pages upon pages of Mazda 626 owners with automatic transmissions who have or had the same problem's. The shop that I took my car to said Mazda/Ford made a bad transmission for several years!!!. I wish the car manufactures would make up for there mistakes and not keep passing them onto the consumers. . Thanks tim keblis.

I had the transmission replaced once already. The transmission I have now when driving on a hwy at 50mph and above with start to jerk in and out from 2000 to 3000rpm and the o/d switch light will blink. After this happens, it doesn't matter what speed the vehicle is in, it responds the same.

My Mazda was doing just fine then one day it started having major problems shifting from 1st to 2nd gear and revs very high going between gears, and the o/d light flashes. I have not been able to afford the repairs yet.

I have a 2000 Mazda 626 and the transmission is horrible. Well, was because I had to replace it. Instead of my car going in reverse when I put it in reverse it went forward. My overdrive light kept coming on and blinking and the code was always the temperature high due to highway driving. If this transmission wasn't meant for highway driving it should have never been utilized. Luckily I didn't get into an accident with the care.

I purchased a 1997 Mazda 626 with 90,000 miles on it in January 2007. Recently, at 112k, the o/d light began flashing and the car jerked and struggled to shift gears. I took it to four different automotive mechanic shops and they all ran an estimate and told me the same thing - that the Ford cd4e transmission in it is failing and it's only a matter of time before it quits completely. They also all informed me that this is a typical problem with this type and year transmission. It is very devastating to me because I am on a very limited income and it had proven to be such a reliable car aside from the transmission problem, running gas at aprox. 30 mpg. As I used a popular search engine to find "Mazda 626 transmissions" hoping to purchase a new one, instead I was greeted with thousands of pages upon pages of complaints on the exact same problem I have encountered with the Ford cd4e transmission. Neither Ford nor Mazda has done anything to accept responsibility; this should be inexcusable!.

I was on my way to las vegas from California and my o/d light started to blink on and off. My speedometer went to 0 and I started to lose power. My engine was smoking so I pulled over and was stranded in the desert for around 45 min. Come to find out my transmission over heated and went out on me.

I was driving from California to las vegas and my o/d light started to blink on and off but there were no other signs. All of a sudden my speedometer went to 0 and I was losing power and the engine was smoking. I had to pull over and stop in the middle of nowhere. Come to find out the transmission overheated and went out on me.

Over drive light keeps blinking, replaced transmission two time and car o/d light still blinks, transmission about to go out again!!!!.

I was driving at 65 mph on a freeway when o/d light started blinking, then the engine accelerated to 7000 rpm at the speed. Pulled over and stopped, after that I could not move the car. Apparently, the transmission is blown (as what everyone says). I researched this extensively and it looks like it is a defect that the manufacturer was aware of and, as such, should help mitigate. Looks like tons of 626s were damaged like this. I will attempt to have dealer take a look at it and hopefully they will fix it. But I believe all the complaints on this forum are a valid ground for a recall.

On 11/22/07 my wife noticed that the o/d off light was flashing on her 2000 Mazda 626 and the transmission was not engaging in first gear completely. On 12/7/07 while traveling on interstate highway 894 the car completely lost all forward movement from the transmission. She was lucky enough that traffic was light and she was able to coast to the side of the highway.

76,000 miles on car. While doing highway driving, after about an hour, the overdrive light started to flash. Transmission fluid released into engine compartment. Took it to garage and they said error code indicated transmission overheating. The fluid was burnt and transmission may have been damaged. The fluid had been good a couple of weeks earlier. Actions taken include: flushed fluid. Added an aftermarket cooler. Wait and see if the transmission performs correctly and if the flashing light returns.

7 months ago, the transmission needed to be replaced at 150,000 miles. That is to be expected for that mileage. When I put the car in drive it is sluggish moving forward. This is because the car is starting out in 2nd gear instead of 1st. At 15 - 20 mph, the car downshifts to first, then immediately back to second gear. At 20mph, the car does not want to shift into 3rd gear for about 15 seconds, but eventually shifts. The o/d light begins to flash on the dashboard. When I slow down, the car will down shift abruptly in to a lower gear. I took it to my mechanic and he said that this should not happen to a 7 month old transmission. I researched online and there are tons of people that have experience this very same problem with the 626. This is a manufacturer defect and I would like to see what can be done about it. The car is unsafe to drive.

My1999 Mazda 626 has had a total of 4 front seals and 2 back seals replace on the transmission. The car has 80k miles on it. Two weeks ago the o/d light started blinking off and on then the transmission went out. I have had this car into the service department since it was a month old with transmission issues only to be told it was normal. I had to have my first seal replaced after one month with less then 6k miles on it. Mazda replaced the seal but did not fix the problem (since then I have had 5 seals replaced, of course out of warranty). There is a major problem here that Mazda knows about. I just paid 2k for a rebuilt transmission 2 weeks ago with 80k miles. This needs to be a recall issue. There are just too many people having the same problem with these vehicles.

Mazda 626 ES 2000. Transmission failure. Replaced transmission from eagle transmission, o/d light flashing after trip to dallas, failed transmission again. 2 months after rebuilding transmission. Now I see TSB on this problem. Mazda knows that this transmission is too small and overheats. What will they do? updated 04/21/08.

I own a 1992 4cyl automatic Mazda 626. In Aug 2005 - the transmission had to be replaced. I believe at the time the mileage was around 60k. I researched online and found that this was a common problem amongst Mazda 626's but Mazda was not owning up to the problem. Now, Nov 2006 - 15 months later, the car started to run rough, and then the o/d light started blinking. Again I researched online and found that a lot of repair shops and Mazda stated that the transmission was bad - also it was noted that it may also be a computer problem. How many transmissions does Mazda have to have break before they own up to the problem and issue a recall for all 626 transmission problems?.

2001 Mazda 626 lx with 76,000 miles on it began having its o/d off light flash on my dashboard. Then my shifting in my transmission went out. Then the transmission went out completely. Car was in excellent condition before this and the only reason must be a faulty transmission. I am a student and am having to work overtime to pay for a new transmission, which may also fail due to the electrical problems inherent in the transmission.

Transmission had to be rebuilt. Check engine light was on and the o/d light flashed.
