1 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2002 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 10/13/2019

Without any warning the transmission started slipping out of forward gear while at a traffic light after releasing the brakes and gently pressing the accelerator pedal the vehicle didnt move. Manually shifting into 1st gear was the car able to move but causing a very harsh lurching forward causing a loud "clunking" noise. I was able to limp the car 3 miles to my home. I was involved in a rear end accident at the next traffic light. While the vehicle was in 1st gear and having the brakes applied the transmission caught in gear and lunged forward causing me to contact the car in front of me. Both myself and the occupant of the vehicle I hit sustained minor injuries and well as property damage to the front of my vehicle and the back of theirs.

3 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 03/22/2010

I have a concern with the transmission's on the Mazda 626 transmission style cd4e. There are thousands of people (internet searched) who have these vehicles and have been placed in dire straits as I am. I was traveling down the freeway at 65 mph and from out of nowhere, my od stopped functioning and left the car's tranny slipping out of 4th gear searching for a lower gear as it threw the flashing "od light off" indicator light. I had a woman swerve behind me as I had total loss of power and trying to get my car to grasp any gear. Once I pulled to the side of the road and stopped, the od light stopped flashing and my vehicle was left in a "limp home" mode where I could not get over 45mph. I had the tranny rebuilt to the tune of 1500. 00 and guess what? I got into the car to do highway travel one week later, and it happened again. I have read that I am by far the only person this has happened to. This is a 2000 model. My brother bought it in 2002. He has maintained the vehicle for the last 7. 5 years and I have had it for 6 months now. The miles are 76k, only! someone needs to have Mazda fix this issue. This is rediculous and thie is by far a major safety concern. The surging and searching the 4th gear does is very hard, jerky and surging. Anyone right on your butt in traffic is going to slam into one of these vehicles. There is also a TSB for this as well. . . . . . But Mazda has offered no amends to this situaution when I called the customer service line. They said they were unaware of this situation. That is simply not possible.

4 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2002 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 02/28/2008

For the past week I have been having trouble with my vehicle's automatic transmission. I own a Mazda 626 2002 4 cyl. My vehicle has 63,642 miles and for the past week while driving my vehicle would shift out of gear into a lower gear. It would stay in the same gear and not shift (this occurs mainly in the lower gears when the vehicle is in drive). The o/d off light would blink on and off after this occurs and the check engine light came on when the problems began. Yesterday after parking the car I am unable to put the car in reverse. The vehicle will not go backwards. I looked online and there are apparently numerous documented issues of Mazda 626s having transmission failure. . I called the Mazda customer support center and was told that there is no powertrain warranty offered and my vehicle is out of the manufacturers 3 year/50000 mile warranty.

5 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 1997 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 02/03/2006

Car is driven under normal conditions highway/ city. After the transmission warms up the od off lamp blinks and the transmission shifts erratically, when starting from a light the transmission will shift out of first gear at about 4000 rpm and seems to go directly into 3rd. We have been told that the transmission must be replaced, now the car is just sitting until we can get it fixed, they just too much money at this time.

7 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2001 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 10/16/2005

Driving on interstate 95 south from richmond, va. At approx. 70 mph when auto transmission jumped out of gear, causing sudden deceleration. Was able to exit interstate highway by pulling to my right and driving slowly until exit ramp was reached. Car was able to limp home to raleigh, nc by taking secondary roads and not totally stopping for stop signs as transmission did not want to pull car away from a total stop. This car only has 73k miles on it and it not driven harshly nor has it ever pulled a trailer. Transmission needs to be replaced according to mechanics. They also say this model transmission has bad reputation within the repair industry. Appears that I will need to purchase a "rebuilt" transmission and have it installed.

10 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 10/26/2004

I own a 1999 Mazda 626 ES with an automatic trans axle. The vehicle has been serviced regularly, and has 78,000 miles on the odometer. Last week the transaxle failed as it dropped down a gear, to go up a slight hill, at approximately 70 mph on the interstate. As a result, the transaxle will not shift out of second gear. The resulting rebuild of the transaxle will cost $2100, half the current trade-in value of the vehicle. My concerns are two-fold. First, the transaxle should not have failed at 78,000 miles; this is not a normal situation for a well-maintained vehicle of this age and mileage. Second, after a search through internet discussion sites, and discussing the issue with a CO-worker who had the same thing happen with a 1995 Mazda 626, it has become evident to me that Mazda 626 transaxle failures are a fairly common, seemingly systemic problem.

12 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 06/19/2002

This 5 year young car has been garage kept and used as a third vehicle for weekend driving. Over the last few hundred miles, the tranmission began jolting into first gear when stopped at traffic lights, etc. On June 19th, I decided to take the vehicle to my mechanic to check for what might be an emerging transmission problem. The vehicle would barely back out of the driveway. It seemed to jump out of gear, and seemed to shift gears randomly and without warning. I had to stop several times on my two mile journey to place the transmission in neutral and ease it back into drive. These extreme symptons have manifested themselves intermittently since June 19th, prompting the internet searches that lead us to NHTSA's website. I will be taking the vehicle to Mazda in the near future and will report my experience back to you. Is there anything that you can tell me in dealing with Mazda so that this can be fixed with minimal expense and aggravation? many of the Mazda transmission reports to NHTSA relate stories of computer failure but in most cases the transmission is replaced. What has NHTSA learned of this matter relative to the mechanical versus computer problem? how do I keep from being taken? frankly, it is clear from the complaints lodged on your site and on other sites detailing Mazda transmission problems, that Mazda/Ford has a serious problem with this transmission that they are passing on to the public at large. I think that transmission failure at only 32150 miles is not reasonable service and I have never had such a failure with any other vehicle. Looking at the NHTSA website, apparently, you have no investigations of Mazda to report. The NHTSA Mazda 626 transmission complaints are dated starting 1997. The problem seems longstanding enough to warrent investigation. What has been the experience with other Mazdas and comparable competitors? I am writing to you in advance in hope you can offer some advice in resolving this. Regards, joe bachalis.
