37 Overdrive Light On problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 10/03/2006

My 2000 Mazda 626 has 112,800 miles. Six months ago the vehicle has 100,000 mile service and the dealer recommended I install a transmission cooler. I asked why and he didn't offer anything other than it was a good idea. Now my o/d light is flashing and the transmission is clunking. The repair shop says that the transmission is burned out. Mazda knows about this, the dealers know about this but the consumers do not know about it. This vehicle needs a recall or at least a broadcast warning to consumers.

38 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1996 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 09/28/2006

1996 Mazda 626 overdrive light began flashing and transmission began shifting very rough. Turning car off and restarting cleared the problem temporarily, but it keeps recurring. A web search reveals this to be a very common problem that leads shortly to complete transmission failure. *.

39 Overdrive Light On problem of the 2001 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 09/27/2006

My 2001 Mazda 626 has had two transmissions installed and now installing the third one @104000 miles first time the overdrive light flashed and would not shift into the proper gear at 53000 miles we had to fight with Mazda north America for several weeks to take care of it. Also wheeler Mazda in yuba city did not help or care witch the car was purchased at new. I have had the car serviced at the dealer for all recommended service. Now the second one just went out @ 104000 miles and the Mazda rep for Mazda north America will not help at all. The cost to repair this one is2,900 dollars. I have 3 children and one on the way. This is not what I expect from a new car that has been well taken care of. The axles went out @ 70000 miles the stereo went out 2 times in the first month. The 2nd transmission started squeaking for about 10 minutes then the transmission just quit. Thanks.

40 Overdrive Light On problem of the 2001 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 09/24/2006

2001 Mazda 626 lx 4 cyl auto trans. At 80k miles, after long highway trips, the o/d off light started flashing intermittently. Then, there was difficulty shifting, then the entire transmission failed. I have had two transmission rebuilds at a cost of $3500 over the past 2 years. It has been a year since my last rebuild and I am seeing the same problems again. I have seen reports all over the internet sitting similar problems. I am not happy with this vehicle at all.

41 Overdrive Light On problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 08/25/2006

I purchased my car in April of 2004 with 45,000 miles on it; around 102,000 miles, my car stated jerking when it changed from 1st to 2nd gear; now, at 106,000, the o/d light, and the engine light both flashes, and I can barely make it up a hill, because of all the jerking and hesitating that it does.

42 Overdrive Light On problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 07/01/2006

Transmission over heats(overdrive light blinks), causing the car to shift gears improperly and if untreated by adding an extra radiator for the transmission it will go bad!!!!!.

43 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 06/30/2006

O/d light flashes on and off at high speeds. Car starts smoking and transmission fluid flows out of a tube from the transmission. The transmission losses speed and begins slipping. Then check engine light comes on. I can only drive my car locally for fear of being stranded, as I have been several times.

44 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 06/27/2006

I own a 99 Mazda 626 4 cylinder I have only owned it for a year and since I bought it the transmission has acted up and after doing a lot of research I have come to the conclusion it isn't just mine everybody's is messed up first it started with the transmission overheating making the o/d light blink on and off and then slipping really hard and now it is out.

45 Overdrive Light On problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 06/07/2006

O/d off light started flashing. Took vehicle to a local dealer and they ran a diagnosis. They found a dst p01718 failure - automatic transmission slippage causing overheat condition. The transmission needs to be replaced as it will fail. It is a 2000 Mazda 626 with only 58000 miles on it.

46 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 03/28/2006

: the contact stated while driving 65mph, the automatic transmission began to hesitate, and the overdrive light illuminated. The vehicle was seen by an independent repair shop. A diagnostic test was performed which detected a failing transmission. The dealer was alerted about the problem.

47 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 03/13/2006

I have a 1998 Mazda 626 lx 4 cylinder, automatic transmission. I am sure you are aware of the transmission problems with these vehicles from 92-02. During long drives (over 30 miles), I began experiencing problems with the o/d (overdrive) light flashing. Accompanying this phenomenon, was erratic shifting at high speeds between third and fourth gears. When pulling over and stopping the car, black smoke can be seen coming from the left side under the hood. This only seems to occur at high speeds, above 50 mph. This occurred on long drives as soon as I purchased the car. Multiple mechanics were unable to diagnose the o/d light problem. I had the O2 sensors replaced. I found out later through internet chat rooms for the Mazda 626(aka: support group for automatic transmission 626 owners), that this problem is the first sign that the transmission is burning up. The transmission finally failed at 105,000 miles(lucky to last that long). Cost me $2000 to replace transmission with one from a junk yard. Now the o/d light still flashes when driving over 30 miles over 50 mph. Just waiting for the transmission to go out again. Mazda should pay for these repairs, and the thousands of other unfortunate Mazda 626 owners out there.

48 Overdrive Light On problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 03/01/2006

2000 Mazda 626 lx 4 cyl. On March 1st 2006, my speedometer dropped to zero while driving at a continuous speed (45 mph) this happened several times within a half hour period before the engine light came on. On March 2nd, I drove the car to the local Mazda dealership for a diagnostic. According to the dealership, the diagnostic revealed that the speed sensor was bad. However, they also related that the sensor was replaced and that the problem was still there. The dealership proceeded with a search of the wiring in order to determine what the problem was. This was done at an hourly rate of $85. 00 an hour. On March 6th, a broken wire was found at the firewall. It took them 7. 5 hours to make this determination. On March 11th, while on the expressway, my o/d light began flashing off and on continuously. It also began bucking and jerking and would slip in and out of gears. This is the first time this has ever happened with this car. I just hit 95,000 miles and I purchased it new in may 2000.

49 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 02/20/2006

Refer to odi 10150361. Want to clarify that purchased vehicle new 6-28-99. Trans went out at 87000 miles. Had rebuilt. Never shifted correctly when new. Even worse after rebuild. Reverse shifted very roughly after very apparent pause. Called Mazda dealership purchased from, they didn't care. Said nothing was wrong with it. Had rebuilt 23 months ago. Already went out at christmas 2005. Had rebuilt. Lasted two days - returned to trans shop. Went back to the shop today for the 5th time since was "rebuilt" again at christmas. No one drove the car/sat in driveway after picked up the last time. Decided to take through car wash today, and didn't make it out of the driveway - so no car wash. Wanted to get it ready to trade off, and trans started slipping and jerking again. O/d light flashing, check engine light on again. Won't shift into reverse. Same thing again. I certainly wish I was a millionaire and I would pursue a lawsuit against Ford and Mazda for their "expensive junk" cars! my car has always had regular maintenance, oil changes, tune-ups, etc. It has never been abused and still looks like brand new inside and out. Too bad it's not reliable. Just like everyone else has said here, word of mouth, saying they will never purchase another Mazda or Ford again. The same definitely goes for me. So, in the last two years I've spent over $4000 for transmission repairs, and it still won't run correctly! I'm just fed up!.

50 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 02/15/2006

: the contact stated the vehicle began jerking, and then the reverse would not engage. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop, were the transmission was rebuilt. Less than two years later, the overdrive light illuminated intermittently and the reverse failed again. The transmission was rebuilt a second time. The overdrive light illuminated and the vehicle began jerking less than a week later.

51 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1996 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 01/31/2006

For the fifth time in three years the transmission o/d light began to flash, within one minute the transmission when in drive would skip first gear. If you start in first gear and manually shift the car appears ok. Just out of 2 year warranty with less then 10,000 miles between last repair. Transmission shop said that because of failure history on Mazda 626 and Ford probes they could no longer service in good conscience. Recommended I bring to dealer. At this time I can not afford a 2500- 3000 dollar repair.

52 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 01/28/2006

If only I did more research on the 626! wife drove 30 miles with no problem. Had previously replaced cable linkage for the transmission. Wife tries to put car in reverse, but couldn't. O/d light flickering on and off , fluid coming out of dip stick onto motor. Mechanic says the trans is completely gone or some electrical problem.

53 Overdrive Light On problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 01/25/2006

While driving to work on 01/25/2005 had overdrive switch off, and as the transmission got hot, the overdrive off switch light started flashing. The car started making jurking movements like it was going to stall and proceeded on to work.

54 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 01/25/2006

Several month back, after 2 hours of a 3 hour trip on I-77, the o/d off light began flashing on my 1999 Mazda 626. It remained in the od (4th) gear, but I slowed down anyway as I thought this may have something to do w/ overheating. After checking with my neighbor (has his own transmission shop) he noted inherent problems with this model transmission, and that it was likely due to overheating. This was at around 96,000 miles. Now, at 104,000 miles, the transmission has failed completely. At first, it was slipping on the highway. Then it would only go forward if shifted into 1, 2, or drive, but not overdrive. Lastly, it lost all forward power while almost at the top of a hill at a red light. Fortunately, I was able to coast in reverse down the hill and into a parking lot, let the tranny cool, and get a police escort to my apartment 4 blocks away (in reverse), up a one way street. Replacement costs per my transmission guy (for a used tranny) around $1000 + labor.

55 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 01/10/2006

My 1998 Mazda 626 replaced transmission at 49000 miles on it o/d light flashing on transmission down shifting on its own. Transmission fluid blew out, the dipstick was replaced, speedometer gear set also flushed rad. & cooler now new transmission doing same thing at over $2600 dollars out of pocket. Heard lots others have had same problems would like to report. To see if the Mazda dealership could be responsible for repairs.

56 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 01/01/2006

I had the automatic transmission on my 1998 Mazda 626 rebuilt at no. 1 auto repair center in stafford, va, back in November of 2002 at a cost of 1650. 00. On January 1, 2006, while driving home from lorain, OH, to kettering, OH, this rebuilt transmission seemed to overheat and blow. The transmission went out suddenly and smoke proceeded to billow from my hood while I was driving at a speed of 75 mph. The o/d off light had been blinking a few weeks ago, so I took the car in to grismer auto repair in dayton, OH. They said the transmission fluid was very dark and sludgy and recommended a flush and change. The o/d off light went off after that and didn't come on again until moments before this second transmission failure. Now it looks like I will have to get a second rebuilt transmission for the same car within a span of approximately three years. By the way, my last payment is next month on a five-year lien. That's two rebuilt transmissions I have had to pay for before the car was even paid off. Will someone please tell me how this is fair.

57 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1997 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 10/05/2005

The contact stated while driving on the freeway at 55 mph the overdrive light blinked on and off. Then, the vehicle will not go over 40 mph, and the rpms increased to 6,000. Had to pull the vehicle over and wait for the rpms to go down. The vehicle was taken to the dealership, and they stated there was too much pressure in the transmission. He took the vehicle to a mechanic , who rebuilt the transmission, but the same problem recurred.

58 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 09/10/2005

Transmission failure: I have a babied 1998 Mazda 626lx. At 107,000 miles I noticed some very slight transmission shift problems. I consulted the manual. Nothing. I called the dealer, vague answers, no recommendations. I drove it and noticed the o/d light coming on at about 60 miles ( heat ? ). So I started short driving only. Finally it failed and blew fluid all over the engine compartment. Repairs. So far - $1590. 00, but no confidence it is over. My mechanic said the trans cooler was designed poorly and could not be cleaned to where it would work properly. We put on an aux cooler. We hope it works. Problem is the car is not worth it. I am angry at ^&% ^%$#^& Mazda for their inept support and stupidity. I will never use them again. They have leeched me long enough on this car. They could have helped a long time ago about the heat build-up of the fluid. They knew this was coming. They are vultures waiting for your car to die and then they will help themselves to your $2500. 00. I will die telling folks to steer clear of Mazda and Ford.

59 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1996 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 09/07/2005

1996 Mazda 626 4 cyl with cd4e auto transmission & 110,000 miles. The trans o/d lock light will start to blink. The trans will start to upshift hard and downshift for no reason. The dealer advised the transmission must be replaced.

60 Overdrive Light On problem of the 2001 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 08/23/2005

My 2001 Mazda 626 was brought to the dealer while still under warranty due to a burning smell in the engine. The car also smelled musty as if water were leaking somewhere. The dealer adjusted the moonroof screws out in the parking lot and claims no burning smell was present. At approximately 50 miles over the warranty, the stereo display stopped illuminating and Mazda would not cover the $300 repair. At around 70,000 miles, the overdrive light suddenly began to flash continuously. The car started to chug up hills and jerk when shifting into drive. I notified Mazda immediately, thinking it was an electrical problem as stated in the owner's manual. The dealer said to drive it in. On the way, the car quickly got worse, would not accelerate over 40 mph and stalled while merging onto the highway. The car was unable to go into reverse. The dealer said, "bad news, you need a new tranny". Unprofessional and ignorant words to me. I paid another transmission company for towing and a rebuilt transmission since Mazda wanted over $3,000. He stated that many Mazda 626 transmissions have been failing too early since they were built with a Ford transmission, not capable for a car like the 626. Mazda must have had some good reason to offer 0 percent financing then suddenly stop making the long existing and once reliable 626. I strongly feel that the numerous and similar complaints should be investigated. There are probably several other owners of the 626 out there repairing their transmissions too early and unaware to file a complaint. Thank you for your time.

61 Overdrive Light On problem of the 2001 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 07/25/2005

Started with overdrive light flashing on/off. Car hesitates and chugs when you step on the gas from a stopped position. Jerks while shifting and transmission is failing. I have had all the recommended services done including tune up, oil change and transmission fluid flush. The car has 73,000 miles on it.

62 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 07/15/2005

1999 Mazda 626 transmission died I have been informed by reading on the forums about transmission problems on the Mazda 626. I just purchased this car about a year ago with about 110k miles (the car was in excellent shape). I have put about 7k miles and three weeks ago the transmission started to slip. A couple of months ago I took a trip and on the way back home the o/d light came on and it did not turn off until I stopped at a rest stop and the car cooled down. I guess it was a sign the transmission was overheating. Well, I have since taken it to a transmission shop and have been told that it needs to be rebuilt ($1500 min. ). I have since tried driving it to another shop and now it runs for a couple of minutes and quits. Will not move at all. I turn if off and wait a couple of minutes to let it cool off and it works again for another couple of minutes. What a crock!! if Mazda new about this issue and reluctantly issued a tech bulletin about the transmission overheating, why did they put this car out to begin with. Motor and tranny are the life of the car, if neither work what is the car good for!.

64 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 06/06/2005

Auto transmission has been leaking and shifting poorly since about 40,000 miles. Now at 87000, the o/d light is flashing on and off. Suspect I'll have to have it rebuilt. Found many complains on this transmission, but Mazda and Ford appear to want to do nothing about it.

65 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1997 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 06/01/2005

Viloent jerks and stalling of the transmission. O/d light flashes after driving for 45 minutes to an hour. The check engine light comes on also as a result.

66 Overdrive Light On problem of the 2001 Mazda 626

67 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1996 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 04/04/2005

1996 Mazda 626 transmission went out. The o/d light flashed and I immediatedly turned my vehicle off and on and the problem cleared up for a few minutes. Then the transmission stopped working as I was comimng down a steep hill. The event was very frightening but no one was hurt.

68 Overdrive Light On problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 04/01/2005

The contact owns a 2000 Mazda 626. Transmission does not work properly. The overdrive light continues to flash , and the vehicle will not go into reverse and will not shift . The vehicle was taking to a repair shop and the transmission was repaired. However, the problem recurred. The current mileage is 102000 miles. He is no longer driving the vehicle.

69 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 03/27/2005

On March 27th 2005, I was returning from a 4 hour trip when the overdrive light on my dash started flashing, the transmission shifted into overdrive and smoke began coming from under the hood, transmission fluid covered my engine. I stopped to allow for the transmission to cool, it was fine after this. The same thing happened 7 months ago. At that time I had the transmission fluid replaced. Mazda dealership told me that the Mazda transmission were known for this problem, that on long trips at roadway speeds they tend to overheat and should have a transmission cooler installed. This is the second time this has occurred, my fluid has only 5000 miles on it. There is no reason for this to continue happening, or happening in the first place. Mazda/Ford, whoever, should be replacing all these transmissions.

70 Overdrive Light On problem of the 1999 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 03/16/2005

I brought a 1999 Mazda 626 at around 64,000 miles. I always got my fluids check and change around every 3,000 miles. It drove fine until recently at 115,000 miles when it had a hard time going into 2nd gear. The check engine light came on and the o/d light also started flashing. It finally got the place where it wouldn't move forward at all. I had to miss a day at work because of it. I had to get the car towed and look at by a mechanic. The mechanic said that it sounded like my 2nd gear was about to go out. He tried to get it to work by changing my transmission fluid and replacing my alternator belt. The car ran good for only one day and on my way home from work the check engine and the o/d light came on. Luckly, my car made it home, but the next day it wouldn't even move forward. It will cost between 1,200 and 2,500 dollars to get it fixed. This is money that I do not have! I still got two years worth of payment to make on it and I have no idea how I'm going to get to work every day. Hopefully I can come up with the my to fix this problem.
