Mercedes Benz E350 owners have reported 75 problems related to other fuel system tank filling/charging (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Strong gas odor after filling and for few days took it for repair find the sending unit cover leaking it had filled the cover and part of the tank. The odor was on and of about six months ago but only it was getting worse lately and needed repair. I think mercedes company should take this safety issue seriously before major . . . .

I recently bought an 07 mercedes E350 I've found this same complaint on numerous websites the whole cab of the car fills with a terrible fuel smell only on the inside of the cabin but its so bad id hesitate lighting a lighter in the car until the windows have been rolled down and aired out its supposedly under the very spot my 5 year old granddaughter would be seated this is not only highly dangerous and flammable but will give the driver and occupants terrible headaches, nausea at times and in my opinion is a not only fire hazard but also a health hazard and it does this sitting stationary without the car running I've tried everything not filling the car to the top but even at a half tank you have the same problem its so bad I would return the car if the dealer would take it back this is extremely unhealthy.

My 2006 Mercedes Benz E350 has a strong odor of gasoline, particularly strong after filling the tank. My understanding is that there was a NHTSA investigation into this problem in the past and the manufacturer agreed to extend the warranty to repair the problem which resulted in NHTSA closing the probe. I contacted my local dealership regarding this problem and they indicated that the warranty is not extended. This implies that the manufacturer is not complying with their agreement or the probe should be reopened?.

The contact owns a 2007 Mercedes Benz E350. The contact stated that after filling up fuel tank, the vehicle emitted an abnormal fuel odor. The contact stated that the vehicle had ceased to operate without warning while traveling at 50 mph. Upon investigation, the contact discovered an investigation was opened and closed under NHTSA action number: ea13003 (fuel system, gasoline) for which the manufacturer extended the warranty to 15 years with unlimited mileage. The contact took the vehicle to mercedes-benz of portland 1605 sw naito pkwy, portland, or 97201 where the contact was informed that the defect was related to the fuel sending unit and not the fuel tank. The dealer had refused to service the vehicle under the extended warranty and provided the contact an estimate of approximately $3,000 to have the vehicle repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and offered that contact no assistance. The failure mileage was unknown.
Fuel has been pooling on the top of the fuel pump near sending, for months I would smell gas after filling up or even at about 3/4 of a tank. Assuming I had put in too much; inside fuel filler cover it warns not to top off tank. Something I didn't see until after the smell of fumes. Under mb's pzev warranty it states that if this is a part that could become defective and has given owners 15 years/150,000 whichever comes first to file a warranty claim and have it repaired or replaced at no cost to the owner. My vehicle has been out commission for almost 2 months because they simply believe that I have not maintain service of my vehicle, according to a comment made by one of their customer service representatives ( calls are recorded, debbie was the agent's name and call was made approximately around 10:15 am on Tuesday 2/19/2019. The diagnostic evaluation performed at park place motors CO. In arlington TX, determined that it was my fuel pump and not the sending unit, stated in their warranty all fuel system components are included provided the vehicle is within the warranty coverage period. My vehicle has 142,164 miles and is just shy of 11 years old. After viewing and receiving reports of other owners who have had similar issues have their vehicles fixed, again I believe this to be discriminatory on the part of the dealership and mbusa and ask that contact be made to either or both to clarify why my vehicle does not fall within the guidelines of their written warranty coverage.

The contact owns a 2007 mercedes-benz E350. The contact noticed an abnormal odor of fuel inside the vehicle after filling the tank with fuel. Also, the check engine warning indicator was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to mercedes-benz of bakersfield (5600 gasoline alley dr, bakersfield, CA 93313, (661) 536-5588) where it was determined that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. The failure mileage was 120,000. The VIN was unknown.
When filling the tank, there is an unusual smell of gas throught the vehicle. Which I attributed to gas being on my hand since I live in a state where most gas station are self service. Last week while driving, my car suddenly shut off while sitting at a traffic light. After vehicle was diagnosed to be a fault fuel pump, I started looking on line and found that this is a persistent problem with vehicle of the same make model and year, but not the vehicle id number. The manufacturer did extend warranty on some vehicles, but not tp all that have the same issues. I do not see how all vehicles could exhibit the same problem, but not received the same coverage. Although my vehicle was designed for the strict emission standard they have in California, I still believe they use the same gas tank on the same model year. To repair my vehicle, it would cost over 3000 dollars due to the fuel tank and fuel pump are one complete unit. While this may seem irrelevant to some, I started envisioning getting hit in the rear or some one smoking in or near my car that could result in a massive fireball of destruction. Please address this situation before someone dies.
Fuel tank: strong odor of fuel after filling up tank from rear of car, fuel tank area. Google suggests possible manufacture's recall. With heat emitting from exhaust area, could potentially lead to fire. . . I'm afraid for my wife and kids's safety. Is there currently an active recall? if so, TSB # please. If not, please duly note issues mentioned. Thank you. Nathan.
When filling up the gas tank, there is a strong gasoline smell inside and outside the car. Mercedes has extended the warranty on previous years and other models but has not extended the warranty to 15 years for this defect to the 2011 E350.
Fuel assembly recall. Mercedes benz E350 2007 inside and outside pungent fuel odor when filling gas tank. Watery eyes, nausea, headache and chest congestion when breathing in fumes.
After filling my car with gasoline, I noticed a strong swell of gasoline in my garage when I parked my car. I had never experienced the smell of gasoline in my garage after filling up my gas tank in the past. I left the car in the garage for awhile, but returned to a stronger smell of gasoline. I took the car to mercedes-benz of beverly hills in California for inspection and diagnosis. The service advisor informed me that the fuel filter sensor was bad, and it may be covered under the manufacture's free recall due to a faulty fuel filter sensor. The service advisor informed me that he had numerous customers with cars needing repair recently for fuel leak related malfunctions. He also stated that he had a car with a similar problem as mine being worked on the same day I brought my car in for service. The service advisor later called me and stated that my car was not covered under the free recall for the fuel filter sensor, and that it would cost me $1,100. 00 to repair the car. The service advisor also stated that my car was not covered under the free recall because it has a medal gas tank instead of a plastic gas tank. What difference does it make whether the gas tank is medal or plastic if the part is defective? I checked out this website and found that several complaints have been filed for the same malfunction with the fuel filter sensor causing gas to leak. I have been a loyal customer of mercedes-benz for the past 12 years (I've owned two mercedes-benz thus far). I will think twice about purchasing another mercedes-benz in the future if they do not honor the free recall for my car for this defective part.
My vehicle has only 19500 original miles which I bought from my aunt who didn't drive the car that much because of gas smell inside especially after filling up gas full tank which I also encountered that makes me worry that might cause combustion or fire. I search the internet and most the mb e-class owners have the same problem which is I think the most important to recall because it is dangerous to drive that possibly can cause fire or will lost lives. I have 3 kids with me driving and picking them up at school and it really worries me. Nhtsa please make an investigation on this regard ASAP. Thank you and more power.
Pungent fuel odor after filling up gas tank. The smell is so strong that it causes drivers nausea, headaches, and dizziness. Local dealer (rbm of alpharetta) states: "my tech found the fuel sending unit sealing ring to be cracked and leaking when he pulled up the back seat. Then he got the vehicle up in the air an could see fuel residue on the back side of the fuel tank that had dripped down from the top. The solution for repair is to replace the fuel tank assembly, reason for this is your vehicle is a pzev or partial zero emissions vehicle. The fuel tank and sending unit are sealed from the factory for zero emission standards. When you arrived this morning I reviewed the vmi for your car to show you it was not part of the warranty extension for the fuel tank you spoke of. I still ran coverage for your vehicle to see if mercedes would cover the repair but it is outside the warranty period for this repair. " I'm not sure of the integrity of mercedes-benz, but I will soon find out. This is obviously the exact same problem experienced on the vehicles under the warranty extension issued by mbz, but since my vehicle was originally purchased in California (pzev), they are denying the claim. I'm assuming this is due to the fact that the repair cost is much more significant than the traditional (non-pzev) design. The pzev vehicles need the entire fuel tank replaced versus the simpler (and less expensive) fuel sending unit for the non-pzev cars. Otherwise, this is the exact same problem. . . Only a different fix. This is a significant safety issue admitted by my service advisor. He stated, that the car is dangerous to drive in the current state. I am currently escalating with mbz leadership and hoping they will hold integrity as a business and do the right thing and fix it under this extended warranty.
Very strong odor of gasoline in cabin after filling tank. Mb refuses to extend warranty per agreement with NHTSA to repair based on VIN # of vehicle.
After filling up the gas tank, there was a strong fuel odor in and around the vehicle. The dealership diagnosed the problem as a defective fuel sending unit/pump top cover.
All of a sudden, one day after filling my tank, there's now an overwhelming gas smell present both ~20 feet away from vehicle, and inside the car. It is so bad, I have to leave windows down for 20-30 minutes while driving before the environment becomes tolerable with the windows up. I have read that other similar E350 models have this problem, but my newer (2011) year model doesn't appear to be on the extended warranty repair list. I believe I have exactly the same issue others have described because the smell of gas is very strong after a top-off, and gets gradually better, becoming much less noticeable as fuel tank level approaches 1/2 tank and below.
Smell of fuel after filling up car, leaking fuel tank around fuel pump ring, fuel pump stopped working.
I purchased this car two months ago from auto dealer who gave me copy of car fax report. No problems were indicated. After filling car up with gas (not topping it off) there is an extremely strong smell of gas inside and especially outside the back of the car. The smell goes away after the gas tank reaches 3/4 full. I recently found out that the previous car owner had the car serviced at the mercedez benz dealership 6 months prior to my purchase. The dealership told the owner that the fuel system was leaking but the previous owner refused to have it repaired. This was not noted in the car fax report - only that there were no service issues. I requested that the fuel system be repaired under the 15 year extended warranty but mercedez benz says that the car is not covered under the extension.
When I fill my tank with fuel, it smells like fuel is leaking because the odor is so strong. The odor stays very strong 2-3 days after filling up with fuel. I have a five (5) year old daughter who also rides daily in the car and this can't be good for her. According to the service department at critz Mercedes Benz, the leak is at the top of the tank. I know there is a recall and the warranty has been extended on fuel tanks with my model of car. However, I have contacted Mercedes Benz and they have told me that I have a different model of fuel tank than the recall one. Evidently, this type of fuel tank is not good also. I have taken my car to critz Mercedes Benz in savannah, GA for service since I purchased it in 2010. Mercedes benz contacted critz and they told them they would only give me a $200 discount on $4,000 worth of work. I don't think I should be held responsible for this. I am asking for the warranty on my type of fuel tank to be extended also. I'm sure there are others that are also having this same problem.
Strong odor of gasoline after filling tank. Vehicle was stationary. Noticeable by driver and passenger when opening door upon egress. Also when walking around rear of vehicle.
Strong odor of gas at rear and around car after filling up gas tank while in motion and when parked.
After filling car up with gas (not topping it off) the inside of the car smells like gas. The smell goes away after the gas tank is 3/4 full.
Strong fuel smell in cabin after filling tank. Vehicle was stationary and parked. Feels like gas was leaking in cabin. Strong gas smell is only in cabin and not outside.
Strong odor of gasoline fuel inside and outside of my vehicle, particularly after refilling the fuel tank. The odor subsided after driving my car for some distance thereby lowering the fuel level in the tank. I tell my daughter to fill the tank to about 3/4 full to avoid the odor. The odor is very strong when we park the vehicle in our garage and thanks be to god that we don't smoke. We park the car outside the garage when my daughter come home. Someone told me that there was a recall on fuel filter/sender, cracks in the pressurized outlet fitting of the fuel filter/sender. Will you please let me know about this situation as soon as you can.
When filling up the gas tank to full, a distinct gasoline smell is present. When the car is driven and the gasoline indicator is less than full, the distinct smell goes away.
Tl- the contact owns a 2009 Mercedes Benz E350. The contact stated that after filling up the gas tank, a strong fume would be noticeable from the vehicle when it is parked in the garage causing the surrounding area to smell of gas. The failure recurred on intermittently when the gas tank is fill up. The vehicle has not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 56,000.
I purchased a 2007 E350 4matic wagon for my parents July of 2011 with 47,000 miles. 3,000 miles later, we noticed a strong fuel odor after filling the tank. Took it to mb and a filter and seals were replaced which seemed to correct the problem. My dad noticed the problem again this past week. We took it in to a certified mb shop and the problem could not be detected using a pressurized test. The tank was lowered after being told by mb there had been a recall issued for the entire tank. The problem is, the full assembly system for the tank is not available and the eta for the part is unknown. Unfortunately, the authorized shop was told the part was available, so they ordered it and lowered the tank. Then mb called them back to tell them the eta was unknown. So now, the dilemma is that we have no part, the tank is lowered, the shop needs to be paid for the labor, mb has no eta on the part and my parents are without a car. Issue now: 1. Why were we never informed by mb of this recall? 2. Who pays for the labor at the authorized shop? 3. How is it possible mb has no idea of an eta on one of it's own parts? help!!! what do I do?.
Strong odor of gasoline fuel inside and outside of the vehicle after refilling the tank. Odor went away after driving some distance thereby lowering the fuel level in the tank. M-b of tampa and mb of USA refused to make warranty repair fuel leakage problem due my pzev vehicle (with option 917) was sold in florida (not in 10 states which have "0 emission requirements"). As per summary of o. D. I. "in letter dated September 4, 2014, mercedes has notified agency (odi nhts) that it will extend the original warranty coverage to 15 years and unlimited mileage on "covered fuel tank components" in e-class vehicles in my 2003-2009 and cls-class vehicles in my 2006-2011. " looks-like mercedes dropped out of the general list of the my 2003 through 2009 e-class all pzev vehicles (with option 917) manufactured for sale or lease in the united states, but sold to customers by m-b official dealers in the states, which do not have "0-emission" requirements.
Strong gas fumes after filling gas tank that will not go away the garage smells strong fumes, people in the car complains of the smell is this safe to smell and be confined within a car or near water heater in the garage. Seems like a hazard to me.
After filling gas tank, strong smell of gas in garage, especially around the rear of the vehicle, as if there was fuel overflow, but there was no fuel overflow at the filling station - did not top-off tank, stopped at first shut-off.
Gas fumes and gas leak after filling tank. Dealer states car needs a new fuel tank, fuel line and sensors and estimates repairs of $2700. 00.
After filling fuel tank and parking car in garage, a strong gasoline smell filled the garage and house. Had to remove car from garage. This happens if I fill the tank. I do not overfill. If I don't fill the tank I don't have this problem. After driving the car around 50 miles the smell goes away.
A fuel tank leak was identified by an independent mercedes mechanic. Filling up the car with fuel and parking in garage overnight, always produced a significant gas odor when returning to the garage. It has always done this (second owner at about 25-30kk miles), and I assumed it was just a quirk of filling the tank. I have always serviced the car at a mb dealer, but recently want to a local well recommended independent mechanic for another issue and he asked me if I knew I had a fuel leak. I said no, and he said do you ever smell gas, and clearly this was identified and had stored codes in the car system that I was unaware of. He indicated that the sending unit needed to be replaced and crack repaired and it was a safety issue. I called mb USA, and they indicated they were unaware of any of other complaints to this nature. When I questioned why the dealer would never have identified this, they indicated that they would never instruct their dealers in any way regarding an issue like this and the dealer has no incentive to not identify the issue and I should discuss with them. I proceeded to have the repair done by the independent mechanic. I understand that fuel would pool over the gas tank from the leak.
