Mercedes Benz E350 owners have reported 75 problems related to other fuel system tank filling/charging (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
After filling car with gas there is a strong gasoline smell coming from the car. Goes away after driving and some of the gas is used out of the tank. Cannot find any gas leaking on the ground around the vehicle and I do not 'top off' the tank. I am no longer parking the car in the garage as I am concerned about an explosion as there is a gas water heater in the garage. Somewhere in the system this gas is leaking. . . . And it's not coming out on the ground!!! scary.

The car was smelling like gasoline inside and outside especially after filling up the full tank. When I lifted the the back seat and opened the cover where the fuel pump is there was a gasoline everywhere overflowing the fuel pump. There were also marks of gasoline on the bottom of the car (left rear side), on the plastic and parts of the exahaust system. This is a health concern for all passengers breathing the air filled with gasoline fumes and also a fire hazard in case the gasoline leaking outside the tank gets in contact with a spark on the road. I took the car to the Mercedes Benz dealership and they said it would cost me $3,800 to fix the problem. They would change the fuel pump and the entire tank. I tried calling the corporate to let them know that I have read other similar complaints and that this is a safety issue but they refused to help and said its due to the age of the car.
I have a very strong odor of gasoline after filling the tank. I am afraid that my water heater is in the garage with that gas smell it might explode. I took the car to dealer and they said it's normal . But when I checked the consumer complaint online many owners have the same problem. I have to park my car outside when I smell gas in my garage. Please look in to it before someone have to die because the defect. I never own a car before that had that problem and I think this is a very very serious matter.

I have a strong smell of gas after filling up tank. Noticed very strong when sitting in garage overnight.
Noticed strong fuel smell in cabin after filling tank - took car to dealer and was quoted over $700 to replace fuel level sender and seals. Problem causes unsafe level of flammable and toxic gasoline vapor to build up in car due to evaporation of pool of leaked fuel on top of tank (located under rear seat). Appears to be common on '03 to '09 w211 body style, but mb offers no help unless car was sold in states requiring pzev certification.
2007 E350 has strong fuel odor after filling tank. After 3/4 of a tank then fuel smell dissipates. Reference #12-001. Also has been an issue with other mercedez benz e class of different years.
After filling up gas tank, strong odor of gasoline detected in the real wheel well on the passenger side. After driving for 50 or so miles, odor is gone. Took car to mercedes dealership and was told the fuel sending unit needed replaced and the repairs would be covered under cpo warranty.

Took my vehicle into the shop for new spark plugs and a coil replacement. They noticed a strong gasoline smell coming from the vehicle. They removed the back seat where the fuel pump is located and found the fuel pump is leaking. You cannot just replace the fuel pump on this year/model E350. The entire gas tank must be replaces. We had noticed the smell of gas a few times after filling the vehicle completely up with gas and were wondering why it smelled so strongly of gasoline. Now we found out why. Mercedes is wanting to charge me to bring my car into an authorized dealer/service center to assess the situation. However, they want to charge me for assessing it and from there make a determination if they will even do anything about it since my vehicle is not under warranty.
After filling up my gas tank, for the first time after buying my used car, I smelled gas in the interior of the car. Once home, I could smell gas outside of the car on the driver's side. I researched this online and came to find out either the sending unit or gas tank was faulty with this group of mercedes. I removed the rear seat, then removed the cover plate over the fuel sending unit only to find about 5-6 cups of gasoline sitting on top of the gas tank. I tried to soak up this gas with rags, but the volume was too great, so I used a shopvac to remove the lake of gas sitting on top of the tank, right beneath the rear seat. I bought this car because I thought it would be safe for my child; I guess I was wrong when I further read that mercedes is doing nothing about this problem and the NHTSA has been dragging it's feet for 3 years on this matter. Would you feel safe driving my car, with your son or daughter in the rear seat, only to be rear ended on the highway by a truck? I am going to guess that you would say no, and that you would fear for your child being burned alive. Please take action on this matter now.
After I fill my gas tank there a strong odor of gasoline both inside and outside of the vehicle, particularly after refueling. Possible problem could be the fuel pump and fuel filter along with the gas tank. The odor is so severe we had to park our car outside the garage after filling. The time we didn't it caused severe illness (nausea) to my wife.
We own a 2005 E350 mercedes with only 83,000 miles on the car. We are the original owners and have maintained the car for the entire time we have owned it. A month ago we noticed a smell in the garage after filling the car with gas. It continued to get worse after filling the tank so we took the car into mercedes of cinti on montgomery road on April 2, 2014. (this is where our car has been serviced since we bought it) they flipped up the back seat and pulled up the black liner and we could see that there was gas in the car. That was scary to actually see gas was moving around inside our car just under where people would be seated. Mercedes said it was due to a leak at the top of the tank. In total, we paid $2073. 21 to repair it. We picked up the car on April 4, 2014. We then googled mercedes gas leaks and found there was a associated press article on this in March 2013, other blogs and your article. My husband called the dealer and told him about these articles. My husband was referred to a corporate man at mercedes, whose name was simon. After going back and forth, they sent us a check for $1,573. 21, thus we still had to pay $500 for the faulty tank. We wanted our gas leak to be included in your investigation. We feel this should have been a recall and it should have been fixed at no charge to us. I know mercedes is aware of the problem because they hired a law firm to defend them. I thought it was odd that the statement by the mercedes attorney does not deny the problem. They actually admit it exists but say it is not a safety hazard. Gas leak not a problem, go figure.

After filling fuel tank, strong gasoline smell inside cabin of car, local dealer said fuel pump and sender need replacing and maybe fuel tank if pump replacement does not solve problem. Fuel is leaking and pooling on top of fuel pump access panel just underneath rear seat. This sounds like a dangerous situation. Any reasonable person would not consider this normal wear and tear of moving parts and, in my opinion should be worthy of a recall.
I recently bought a 2006 Mercedes Benz E350 with 84000+ miles on it, in very good condition. Upon filling my gas tank for the second time, and returning home for the night, I parked in my garage and went about my business. The next morning I noticed a strong smell of gasoline around the car. I pulled the rear seat off, and discovered that there was a small pool of gasoline in the area of the fuel sending unit. Apparently this is not uncommon, and the NHTSA has already initiated an investigation (NHTSA action# pe12001). As far as I know, this car was serviced regularly by the previous owner and was never in an accident. I have no reason to believe that this isn't the sending unit that came with the car originally.
Strong gas smell after filling the tank. The whole garage smells like gas. Dealer said they are unaware of such issue and no recall for this issue. I'm surprised because I read a lot about these issues online. It should be addressed ASAP because it can trigger fire or explosion.
After filling my tank, the smell of gasoline fumes, overtake the inside of the car and fumes vapors outside and around the vehicle until the gas gage is reduced below full. The vapors and fumes are so bad that the garage and car emits the odors for weeks afterwards. I took the car to a mechanic and was told there is a crack in the "neck" of the fuel tank and mercedes is aware of the problem. Est costs to repair is around $2500.
There is an extremely strong gasoline smell in the cabin and exterior of my vehicle. It is very strong smell immediately after filling the fuel tank, but continues to smell throughout the levels in the tank. I am very afraid of a possible fire due to the what seems to be excess gasoline. I am extremely fearful should I ever get involved in a rear end type accident. I feel that myself and my family are in danger until this situation is evaluated. This is a known condition that the manufacturer should take responsibility for and rectify the situation.
After filling up the gas tank and parking it in the garage it gives off a terrible gas odor which gets more and more strong the longer the car is in the garage. Once the cars fuel tank empties somewhat it seems to not emit the gas odors while parked in the garage. I was told to reference action number pe12001.
Strong smell of gasoline occurs after filling the fuel tank. This persists until the car is driven approximately 50 miles. Dealer suggests that this may be a result of fuel tank leaks or bad senders and is quoting as much as $3000 for replacement of the fuel tank.
After filling up gas tank there is a strong odor of gas in the garage. This goes away after 50-100 miles on the tank of gas. I have not noticed any gas leaking on the garage, just the odor. It seems stronger on the driver side of the car. Odor reoccurs after each fill up.
After filling fuel tank, noticed strong fuel odor on drivers side of car. Opened fuel sending unit access panel under rear seat and noticed fuel pooled on top of the sending unit. The fuel odor dissipates as fuel is consumed. However, the odor returns on each full tank fill. Summary: gasoline is leaking from the fuel tank under the rear seat behind the driver.
Reference NHTSA action number: pe12001 2008 E350 rwd, after filling up full tank of gas today 07/17/2013 and park in the home's garage, strong gasoline odor smell coming from rear left (behind driver side) wheel.
After filling up the fuel tank noticed a very strong gas smell coming from the car. There were no visible leaks in the ground our under the car. Continued to drive car and as fuel level dropped the smell went away. Filled up for second time and smell was back again. Began research into the issue and discovered there were 533 officially reported complaints and a lot more un-reported. Spoke with nathan (service manager) and Mercedes Benz of plano texas and he informed me they are aware of this issue but will not provide any assistance. Nathan recommended I call the Mercedes Benz USA customer support number and discuss it with them. I did this as nathan requested and I was told by customer service that I need to have the mercedes dealer officially diagnose the gas smell issue before they could provide any assistance. Customer service recommended that I pay the dealer the $90 diagnostic fee and then submit the paperwork to customer service. Once that is complete Mercedes Benz USA would decide whether or not they were going to provide any assistance and fix the issue. (this process seems backwards).
After filling up the vehicle there is a very strong fuel smell both in the cabin and the trunk. The smell goes away after the fuel level is reduced as a result of driving. However, as every time the tank is filled up (never top the fuel tank) there is a very strong smell. This has caused me being light headed and sick after about 10-15 minutes of driving. Fuel is a carcinogen and very dangerous to human health.
After refilling gas tank, there is strong odor of gasoline, this usually disappears as the gas is consumed, but it it present as long as the tank is above 3/4 full. This has been a constant occurrence since purchasing the vehicle from mb of austin in 2009.
Purchased car on 2/12/2013. Filled car up with gas for the first time on Saturday 3/23/2013. Garage and car smell like gas so bad it actually entered my home and I had to leave the garage door open to ventilate. Went on line and found that there are some law suits against mercedes for this defect and they are replacing the gas tanks with still defected gas tanks and charging clients for them.
I pull up at the gas station(shell) and fill up my gas tank. . . . After filling up my gas tank. . . There was the smell of gas in my whole car cabin. I took my car to Mercedes Benz of south charlotte, charlotte, nc. On 3/13/2013. The service advisor(karl) told me it was the fuel sending unit that was bad. . . There was also fuel leak in my garage. . . The dealership told me they would have to replace the sending unit and the whole gas tank. . . . That would cost $3750. 00. The dealership also said ths was a common problem with the E350. . . And they don't know why there isn't a recall on these. I am asking you to please investigate and pertition mercedes USA to do a recall.
For approximately a year and a half, when filling my gas tank, a strong gas smell occurs in the cabin of the car and in the house garage for a few days. To try and avoid this problem I avoid filling my car completely as the smell disapates as gas is consumed. On July 19, 2014, I filled my tank to the click and proceeded home, parking in the garage. My bedroom is above the garage. While sleeping for a few hours, I awoke with a horrible headache and the stong smell of gasoline in my room. I went to the garage and the smell of gas was overwelming. I stated my car and moved it out of the garage to the driveway for health and safety reasons.
Vehicle was purchased on 11/04/12 with approximately 66,000 miles on odometer. Shortly thereafter, after parking the vehicle in the garage overnight, a very strong gasoine odor was present in the garage. (this is the only car parked in the garage at my home. ) there were no observed fuel leaks coming from the car or on the garage floor. I noticed this same smell around 01/14/13. (odometer reading about 70,000 at this date. ) after some searching online, I determined that there were several incidents of owners reporting fuel smells only after completely filling the gasonline tank. On both of my incident dates, I had filled the gasonline tank completely on my trip home. This smell is not present after using about 3-4 gallons of fuel. It is also not present if I only fill the tank to about 3/4 or 4/5 full, which is what I most often do. When refueling, I typically refill $20 - $40 at one time and do not completely fill my tank. I have not yet noticed any fuel smell inside of my vehicle, only on the outside and within the garage.
After filling car there is a strong odor of gasoline around the car. The smell continues until the tank is down to @3/4 . After reaching this point the smell dissipates somewhat but is still detectable. The garage reeks of fuel but there is nothing on the floor(yet). This problem started at @38,000 miles and continues. We now have @44,000 miles on the car. We tried contacting mercedes USA but they merely told us to contact a local dealership. The dealership we contacted and relayed our problem to (chantilly virginia)claimed there was no known fuel system/tank problem with that model(2006 E350). They would, of course, love to check it out. Research shows that the common fix for this problem(if it works)is around $2,000.
When filling up my gas tank I noticed a very strong odor of gasoline. Was very concerned that if someone nearby had been smoking fumes would have ignited. Also if traveling on the highway if someone had thrown out a lit cigarette who knows what would happen. I called the mercedes stealership and they said it's my problem to fix it. I recently read about a recall for the same issue on 2010 and 2011 mercedes. . . This is the same problem!! look at the complaints filed here for the same issue. . . . . . Wake up NHTSA and include these models. Does a car need to blow up first???.
There is a strong fuel smell in the vehicle after filling up gas tank. Dealer found the issue associated to fuel sending unit, which seem to be a recurrent issue with this model in mercedes. Dealer requires $1,400 to fix the issue. I have contacted mbusa to see if they can help with this repair. There has been a voluntary recall on the e class for 03-06 vehicles, however my car is an 07 model and there is no recall on this year, yet forums of Mercedes Benz owners are filled with same complaint for all e class models with chassis w211. Please investigate this issue. I understand there is an open NHTSA case pe12-001 that may be related to my complaint. Thank you for your prompt attention.
I own a 2006 mercedes e-series with 47,000 miles. I have noticed a fuel smell when the car is in the garage after refilling the tank. The problem was recently diagnosed as a faulty fuel tan seal. The dealer has indicated this is a dangerous condition and the car should not be driven. The estimated repair cost is over $600. In researching this on the internet I find this is a common dangerous problem but there has not been a recall. I also find that in instances where the seal has been replaced, the problem reoccurs a short time later and it is related to the entire mechanism, not just the seal. I feel this issue should be addressed by mercedes and plan to report this to the NHTSA. Please advise.
Reference NHTSA action number: pe12001. Smell fuel after filling tank. Smell noticeable outside car. Smell would go away when fuel level drops. 6/22/12, during normal maintenance visit at dealer, I mentioned fuel smell. They found fuel smell coming from a leaking fuel pump o-ring seal. They replaced the o-ring on the top of the fuel tank. I filled the tank 5 days later. Smelled fuel again. I removed the back seat and opened the fuel pump access port. The well around the fuel pump housing was full of fuel. 7/5/12, returned car to dealer. They said that the tank was "warped" and needed to be replaced. The leak seems to have stopped, but fuel had leaked onto the insulation under the back seat. The interior of the car now reeks of gasoline, almost to the point of not being able to drive due to smell.
At the beginning it was a slight smell of gas upon filling up. Thought on occasion it might have topped off to full. Smell of gas dissapated after a couple of days. Smell has now grown to the obnoxius stage and does not dissapate untill tank shows roughly 3/4 full. Noted that many other mb owners have registered the same complaint. Please add my name to the list. Based on others experience requesting the dealer to deal with it would have little or no effect. Collectively perhaps you can start some action aginst them to take action and fix this potentialy life threating problem. A repair cost is suggested to be over $1,000. 00 and frankly the car can not be sold with this existing problem, the liability would be catastrophic!.
After filling car with gas there is a gasoline smell. Odor so strong cannot leave car in garage until gas dips below approximately 3/4 tank.
