Upon refueling the vehicle and leaving it in the garage overnight, it has often smelled of gasoline inside the car and in the garage. The smell would often dissipate. After refueling the car and parking it in the garage for three weeks while on vacation, the smell is now much worse and will not go away. 47 Other Fuel System problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 03/14/2013

Fuel fumes were detected during routine maintenance at an authorized Mercedes Benz repair facility. Investigation revealed fuel pooling on top of the fuel filter with integrated fuel pressure regulator. The original equipment defective part number is 3114704094 and has since been superceded. It was determined that there was a leak due to a crack in the plastic assembly. The authorized Mercedes Benz mechanic identified the problem as to similiar to the one that resulted in Mercedes Benz voluntary emissions recall campaign #2008-020001. Vehicles included in the recall were model year 2003-2006 e class and 2006 cls-class vehicles. After contacting Mercedes Benz customer service about the problem they stated the recall only applied to the amg version of e class vehicles and my VIN number was not included in the recall. On March 19th, a USA today article reported that NHTSA was expanding an investigation of the merceds benz fix to the recall problem beyond the amg version of e class vehicles. I believe my vehicle is expericing the same problem that affected the amg versions but Mercedes Benz does not. I'd like this complaint be included in the population of e class vehicles being reinvestigated by NHTSA with similiar problems with the fuel filter with integrated fuel pressure regulator.

The smell has not dissipated and after doing research I found that this is a common issue with this make and model vehicle and that the NHTSA is investigating mercedes for this potential safety hazard. I want this problem fixed because I do not feel that it is safe to inhale gas fumes while driving and that a fuel leak is a dangerous defect that the manufacturer should fix.

Noticed a strong gasoline smell in my garage and inside my vehicle. Also noticed that my left rear passenger seat was discolored with dark yellow staining. Check engine light appeared on car and took to local mercedes-benz dealer to check problem and was told that the fuel sending unit had failed and that raw fuel was leaking in passenger compartment causing the gasoline odor and staining to upholstery. Was strongly urged by service advisor at mercedes-benz to replace the sending unit "anytime you're leaking fuel that's a safety issue". Had sending unit replaced as advised and was told to keep windows down to air the car of gasoline fumes. Mercedes- benz attempted to clean upholstery however this was unsuccessful and will likely need to be replaced.

Have found leakage results raw fuel pooling and/or spraying on vehicle underside of the seat cushion. Research points me March, 2008 emissions recall conducted by Mercedes Benz (emissions recall campaign # 2008-020001) which involved potential cracking of the fuel filter module in vehicles exposed to high ambient temperatures.
