I bought this vehicle from the auction in algona named whitey's public auto auction and that very day I had to put power steering fluid in because there was a leak and it was difficult to turn. I've had the power steering pump replaced and it continues to leak. I got on the internet and started to research and found out about the recall.

Our vehicle caught fire. My wife and I had just gotten off of the interstate when we started to smell an odd smell. We pulled into a hotel parking lot where we started to see smoke coming from the front of the vehicle. I stopped the vehicle in a hotel driveway, put the vehicle in park. We got out of the vehicle and saw flames underneath the vehicle. We called 911 and hotel staff tried to extinguish the fire but it continued to grow. The fire dept. Arrived and put out the fire. Photos are attached.

My 2008 is having the same problem as this 2009. Mercedes benz is recalling 16,130 my 2009 m-class w164 passenger vehicles equipped with the optional power lift gate. As a result of a faulty seal around the rear tail lamp assembly, water may enter the rear compartment containing the spare tire. Water contamination of the control unit for the power lift gate can result in disabling of the power lift gate motor. Hazard:water will cause a short circuit which could lead to a fire. Remedy:dealers will replace the seal of the rear tail lamp assembly with a thicker one and reposition the affected power lift gate control unit inside the chassis. This service will be performed free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during April 2009. Owners may contact mercedes-benz at 1-800-367-6372. Additional info:Mercedes Benz recall no. 2009030003. Owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's.
I was driving on a busy intersection in my 2002 Mercedes Benz Ml320 when driving the yellow triangle in the speedometer starts to flash and all the breaks lock up, this is followed by a stall, thankfully I was able to pull off to the side of the road without being hit. After doing some research I discovered that many mercedes Ml320 owners were having this same problem. Specifically the yaw rate sensor. This is a serious life threatening issue that can injure or worse yet kill someone. You guys need to do a recall before someone dies!.
The contact owns a 2001 mercedes-benz Ml320. On several occasions, while driving, the vehicle stopped without warning. The contact was able to restart the vehicle, but the failure recurred. The contact stated that all of the warning indicators on the instrument panel illuminated, and the air conditioning unit and heat became inoperable. The contact's brother inspected the vehicle and stated that the failure was electrical related. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 210.
(dyd missing dealer) tl the contact owns a 2002 mercedes-benz Ml320. The contact stated that the bas and esp warning indicators illuminated. In addition, the contact experienced extreme difficulty turning left and right and had to restart the vehicle several times due to the failures. The dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was also notified. The failure mileage was not available.
The contact owns a 2002 mercedes-benz Ml320. While driving 10 mph, the vehicle felt as if it slammed on the brakes without the contact depressing the brake pedal. The contact stated that the ebs and abs warning lights remained illuminated. The contact also stated that the vehicle made a loud screeching sound when being driven. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic where it could not be diagnosed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 175,000.
I have a 2002 Ml320, the radio is out and the hole clamp used to secure the power steering fluid does not provide sufficient clamping causing a leak, esp/bas stays on causing low traction and the door lock. These items were recalled on the m-class 320, what happened to thes recalls.
Water entered the vehicle (rain) standing water in the spare tire area of the car. The windshield wiper quit working. Got error messages on the dash rear hatch open, checked rear hatch was closed and it would not open either manually or using the remote opener or the button in the car, multiple error messages rear brake lights left right side and trailer, error message srs failure, fuel gauge quit working, locks not working. . . . . Parked the car it was raining unable to drive, the next day drove it to a mechanic who found 1" of standing water in the spare tire well. The lift gate controller is in the well and was wet and not functioning in also took out another controller part cost $978. 61 labor 474. 50 I did not have time for the mechanic to find the source of the leak he had the car 4 days before the new years day weekend (out of town 250 miles from home) took it to the mercedes dealer they said the 2009 year model had a leaky seal at the turn signals that had a recall but it did not include my model year although it sounds like the same problem. The car was driven in the rain I did not encounter flooded roads just rainfall. Mercedes was unwilling to help in any way.
My battery was low and unknown to me the Ml320 for this year loses its transponder codes in the das security module when you try to start the vehicle with a low battery. This is evidentally the third key that has lost its programming on my vehicle due to low battery voltage. Cost so far is 499 for a key, weeks waiting for the key from germany, and 300 to program it once they recieve the key. Its a dealership only item so its very very costly. This is a known problem with mercades and checking the forums it seems that everyone that has 1998-2000 model mercades all lose their transponder codes between 129,000 and 132,000 miles no matter what. This is an obvious manufacturers defect and a known issue that should be paid for by mercades. I never had these issues with my two 2002 ml500's but I will never purchase another benz in my life.

Clear headlight lens cover gets wet on inside even though there has been no rain causing light from headlamp to be diffused and restricting reach of beam. Manufacturer says leave headlight on dissipate moisture, however seems unsafe while moisture present. The dealer refused to contact Mercedes Benz.
While driving, went over bump in road, and truck immediately lost speed. Pressure on gas pedal weakend. There was absolutely no acceleration. I pulled over after almost being hit, and turned vehicle off. Restarted and pull over into autozone to have them hook it up to diagnostic reader. It came back with several codes, that all stated "throttle pedal positioner malfunction" I have bought and replaced this item 4 times since this incident, and the problem still exists. I am forced to drive the vehicle because I have to get back and forth to work, but I'm always very afraid that this part is going to malfunction while in a busy intersection or street, and I along with my kids are going to be killed. It happens at least two to three time a week, sometimes more.

My 2002 Ml320 cluster display lights on my dash all light up, the check engine light comes on, the speedometer stops working actually goes to zero. Once the car comes to a complete stop it accelerates very slowly and will not shift out of first gear. This is very frightening for someone in traffic and this happens without warning. Please investigate this issue before someone is rear ended and dies.
First incident in August 2012 driving 20-30 mph just got on hwy and car suddenly slammed on brakes. Could not go over 1000rpm without brakes engaging but fortunately a policeman who witnessed this escorted us to safety on single lane hwy very dangerous. Replaced yaw rate sensor for $1000. Now it is doing the same thing again 2/27/13 and is undrivable. Most likely facing another replacement of yaw rate sensor for another $1000 that only lasted 6 months last time. There are hundreds of these same stories online and ridiculous that Mercedes Benz with its classy reputation would not recall such a potentially dangerous issue. How many people have to be injured to justify a recall?! I do not feel safe driving my 2 year old daughter anymore and still owe on this hunk of junk so I am stuck.
On or about may 14, 2012, while I was driving on the freeway at full freeway speed, the vehicle suddenly self-initiated a continuous brake activation without me pressing on the brakes or taking any other action. The vehicle's sudden, unexpected and sustained braking action resulted in a near-collision with a semi-truck traveling behind me which the truck-driver was fortunately just able to prevent. I steered the vehicle to the freeway shoulder as the un-commanded braking action brought the vehicle to a stop. The incident was extremely frightening for me, and it was only sheer luck that I was not seriously injured or killed. After I had the vehicle towed to Mercedes Benz of laguna niguel, their service department determined that the electronic stability program (?esp?) control module and yaw rate sensor had failed and need to be replaced. The vehicle is presently in an inoperable condition. Reviewing the NHTSA website, this appears to be related to NHTSA (campaign # pe07007).
The contact owns a 2000 Mercedes Benz Ml320. While parked, the contact noticed flames coming from under the hood. The fire department was called and arrived at the scene to assist. The fire department advised that the fire originated from under the hood on the front driver side of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and deemed as having been destroyed. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 99,000. Updated 04/19/lj updated 04/25/12.
The contact owns a 2001 Mercedes Benz Ml320. The contact stated that the vehicle was parked when it caught on fire. The fire started from under the dashboard on the passenger side. The fire department appeared on the scene after the fire was extinguished. The vehicle was examined by the fire department and towed to a dealer. There were no injuries. The dealer inspected the vehicle and stated that the origin of the fire was due to an electrical shortage. The vehicle was destroyed and an insurance company was notified. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 150,000.
Run over the any pump on the road that cause the gas pedal push down to the bottom, still didn't accelerate cause the car slowy down, this cause everytime driver oever the pum.
Ml 320 got in fire itself suddenly start at the left front side of the engine,I was driving my car for 5 min on fwy, when a car next line honk on me and yelled me my car has fire under the engine after that try to stop and the brake pedal did not work I have to stop the car with the parking brake and run away from the vehicle.
I was driving at 40-45 mph when I noticed an orange glow under the passenger side mirror. Within a few seconds the light turned yellow, and suddenly I noticed flames are shooting out of the side mirror along with thick black smoke. I immediately turned into a gas station and put off the fire with water hose. I was afraid of the fire to get inside the car.
This car has been into service ov 27 time in the last 2 1/2 years regarding the electrical system/ all of the light on the dash board turn on. My lastest issue was on the highway my car just completely turn off on me will on the expressway when I turned the key again the warning light came on this car has been fix numerous times but the problem comes back.
On my mercedes Ml320, 1998 the key refuse to start the engine. I was told at plaza motors in st,. Louis mo. That the car did not recognize the key any more. Upon my research I found that it is common problem with the Ml320 series which is an engineering problem on the part of the manufacturer especially the earlier once 1998-2000 and it will cause $6700. 00 to fix. I will appreciate an investigation, it's so common that a lot of people are selling their cars because of this.
2003 Mercedes Benz Ml320 defects with transmission and computer unit. Consumer states that the vehicle has broken down twice because of these defects and thinks this vehicle should be considered a lemon.
Numerous problems with exterior and interior lighting. Most importantly the left turn signal continually goes out without notice. Sometime the interior left turn lights up and sometimes it doesn't. Other times the interior left turn light goes completely out placing me and my children in great danger. Also I made a left turn and the steering went out just as I entered the beltway and was unable steer the vehicle.
My 2000 Ml320 with 53000 miles had suddenly showed check engine light while I was driving it on the highway at ~65 mph. I exit and as I slowed I could sense the engine was running very rough with shake and strong vibration. Then as I stopped the car at the red light at the exit, the car idled very rough and lots of vibration and then the engine stalled (and shut off). I immediately turned the key to the off position and turned the key back on and the car re-started no problems. The engine idle now only feels slightly rough but idle sound is noticeably slightly louder than before. I took the car to the Mercedes Benz dealer (san diego) that same day and described to them exactly what occurred. The next day they diagnosed it as spark plug failure and spark plug wire failure of cylinder #2 and possibly #4. They recommend replacing all 12 spark plugs and their module and wires. After they did the recommended repairs, my Ml320 seems to run like normal but I still hear the engine idle different than before and engine rev sound slightly louder than before this incident. They said that the sound is normal. I guess I have no way to prove this before and after sound difference so I just have to wait and see what else fails. The total repair cost was approx. $1280; which included 6 hours of labor at $120/hour. I told them I thought 6 hours of labor to replace 12 spark plugs and wires was very inefficient and costly to me or any customer. They just said it takes a lot of effort and tedious work to do spark plug changes. Well I am not a mechanic to whatever they said I guess is right. I just hope they fixed the right problem for the issue I had that's all.
Caller has had vehicle in 6 times for check engine light/spark plugs being corroded/loose wheel bearing/control module went out/for shaking and sputtering at idle, and the electric function check. Manufacturer has not been contacted yet.
While driving at 20 mph, the vehicle caught on fire, smoke and flames came from the dashboard. The dealer replaced all electrical components, but the vehicle still had electrical problems. The electrical system burned out while driving. The lights came on constantly, the air bag light would state the air bag was off, the alarm would go off constantly in the driveway, when the brakes were off, the vehicle beeped. The dealer claimed they were unable to find anything wrong.
This vehicle has numerous defects, and has been in for service countless amounts of times. Mb promised to replace the vehicle if their factory representative could verify my complaints. They absolutely found numerous, redundant defects and now only want to fix the vehicle, rather that replace the vehicle. What a bunch of liars. The vehicle has issues with the steering system, the wheel rubs and the power steering fades out, the radio and cd changer malfunction constantly, fumes from the ventilation system, and when you hit a bump, the car almost goes out of control, even the esp light comes on.
While driving, the power locks moved up and down on their own. Dealer notified.
I parked my car in a strip mall for dinner. When I tried to restart the car after dinner, it wouldn't crank, nor would it start. Called in aaa and by the time they showed up half an hour later, the car started fine. Two days later, when I was driving taking my daughter to school around 7:45am on a surface street, my car suddenly lost all power and the engine stalled. I had to quickly turn into a drive way to avoid other cars and the car stopped at the entrance. Again called aaa and a tow truck showed up 5 minutes and the drivers helped push and park my car, but was told to wait at least 45 minutes for the right tow truck. Tried to start my car every 5 minutes, and it finally started after 15 minutes. I was able to drive to a fletcher jones dealer and paid $600 to have a sensor replaced to fix the stalling problem. The service manager was familiar with the this problem and my friends who owned 98, 99 Ml320 also experienced this stalling problem. I believe this is a safety issue (even the service manager at fletcher jones agreed with me on this). I thanked god that my daughter and I were not hurt in this incident, but an accident could have been easily happened. Since this problem has occurred in different Ml320 model years, and it cost the driver a bundle to have it fixed, Mercedes Benz should issue a recall to fix this problem.
