Mercedes Benz ML320 owners have reported 6 problems related to ignition switch (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My 2001 mercedes Ml320 SUV developed a defect in the ignition switch, whereby the key came out while the car was not in the park position. In June 2009, the car was parked in my driveway and ignition turned off. I didn't realize that the key came out when the car was in neutral instead of park. After a while the car rolled backwards and hit a neighbors car and the garage door opposite my driveway. I reported the incident to mercedes and the dealer said that the defect cannot be covered free by the manufacturer as the car was out of warranty. I paid almost $1000 to get the ignition switch defect fixed.

Submitted by counsel: steven d. Barnhart, Ford & barnhart, llp; 6111 peachtree dunwoody rd. , bldg. G, suite 100, atlanta, georgia, 30328; 404-237-2155, 404-352-0118. This problem is reportedly widespread among the m-class product lines. Specifically, the ignition/key contact design is such that the vehicle will turn itself off if the car hits a bump in the road. According to the dealer, this is attributable to additional weight created by the presence of other keys on the key chain. Additionally, if the key is merely tapped during operation of the vehicle, the vehicle will turn itself off, even with no other keys on the keychain. Shutdown can occur at any speed, and has occurred at normal roadway speeds.
Ignition key did not work. Had to use spare key in order to turn vehicle on. Consumer states without warning, at startup, while stopped, or moving, vehicle will stall, consumer states if you have a spare key, sometimes it will work.
