Vehicle suddenly loses power steering assistance while driving. If the ignition key is cycled the power steering assist may function again. The affected component was determined to be the power steering control module (pscm) within the steering column. A recall was issued for this in 2014, however only the software was updated when the vehicle was brought in for repair. The malfunctioning components were not replaced and the issue has returned.
In motion on a street a power steering assist fault warning came on, shortly after lost power steering. Informed by Ford it was fixed after recall on Sep 22nd 2014, and is no longer valid or covered? same problem happening again as the first recall.

Was slowing to turn in shopping plaza lose power steering almost ran women over cross drive way car would not steer without much force this is dangerous how many must die before Ford fixes this do they remember gas tanks ? my next call is to 60 minutes .
Lost power steering all of a sudden. I was parked in my garage and went to back out and no longer had power steering. Luckily I was pulling out of my driveway and I could pull back in to assess the situation. Had I been driving on a highway and this happened I don't think I would've had the strength to steer the car to my destination. The car has a recall in place for this but my VIN number doesn't seem to be affected. I am wondering why? I wasn't even notified of this recall back in 2014- recall 14v284000 I read the codes off of my vehicle and b1342 variable assist power steering module code. The other code is b2290 occupant classification system fault front passenger side (this may be an air bag issue) which I have told the dealer about in years past. I don't know what the safety risk is with that code.
Lost power steering. Light is on for the electric power steering assist. Happened while driving.
Our 2009 Mercury Mariner suddenly lost its power steering this past weekend. The vehicle was brought back to the dealer in 2014 due to a power steering recall. The vehicle received a software update which was supposed to override the loss of steering and provide an indicator light to show the system had failed. There was no such warning and the sudden changeover to manual steering is dangerous. My wife was driving the vehicle in the grocery store parking lot when the power steering failed. She almost hit another vehicle while trying to pull into a space. She was not able to steer the vehicle and called me to help. I was able to drive it to the dealer with a great deal of effort. Ford's recall and software update were insufficient to resolve the problems with this faulty system. Ford knows the torque sensor in the steering column is prone to failure but offers a ridiculous software update which serves no purpose other than to tell you there is a failure. In our case we did not even receive the warning light. The dealer quoted me $1507. 00 to repair this issue. I called Ford customer service and was told the recall was closed because the vehicle had the software update, and there was no further assistance available. Unbelievable. Please take appropriate action regarding this important safety issue. It seems this electronic power steering system is also failing in other Ford models. Thank you.
The contact owns a 2009 Mercury Mariner. While driving 55 mph, the vehicle lost power steering ability and it became difficult to steer. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the power steering assist was faulty. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) as a possible solution, but the VIN was not included in a recall. The manufacturer was notified. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 166,000.
Lost power steering as I was driving through a parking lot. Saw the message on the dash "power steering assist fault". Called Ford dealership to get my vehicle looked at but they are booked 2 weeks full. Asked about recall 14s05 but they told me my VIN was not part of the recall. I contacted Ford and they gave me the same information. Can not drive vehicle as it is too dangerous in winter. This issue seems to be very common with the 2008 Mercury Mariner and especially ones that were not part of the recall for the same exact issue.
The vehicle lost power steering while driving. The steering has not returned after several attempts to drive the vehicle.
Takata recall. Sometimes when I make left turns, I hear a beep and lose power steering. The vehivle was moving.
My 2009 Mercury Mariner has lost its power steering capabilities. When researching online, it shows a recall based on the power steering. Records show a Ford dealer did the software update to remedy the problem. However, the car wasn't having any issues when this was done. Now that the car is experiencing the issue based on the recall, Ford says it's now out of warranty. I can't imagine I'm the only one out of 741,000 people who is having to deal with this problem. As it stands, the car's steering is manual. Ford needs to do something to satisfy their customers because it's unethical to fix a problem when there is no problem and turn your back when there is a problem.

Vehicle lost all power steering while underway (extremely dangerous when vehicle lost power steering, lucky to have avoided a collision). Vehicle was "serviced" under previous power steering recall. Vehicle steering wheel would intermittently rock back & forth before final failure. Ford is claiming no responsibility for fix, after already issuing a recall for steering related defect. This is a dangerous defect in controlling/steering these vehicle's.
The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired according to NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering); however, the repair did not correct the failure. The vehicle lost power steering after the repair. The steering wheel only operated in manual mode. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. 2008 Mercury Mariner. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle manufacturer refusal to pay recall repairs. The consumer stated while driving, he lost power steering. The consumer lost power steering again, a month later. The dealer reprogrammed the modules to prevent sudden loss of power steering assist. Five days later, the dealer replaced the torque sensor. However, it did not resolve the problem. Recall # 14v284000.
December, 2013, I was exiting parking lot onto a main street that had 2 lanes of oncoming traffic. Halfway into the street, lost power steering but was able to drift to side of road. January, 2014 car would not go over 25 miles per hour, lost power steering. Fortunately I was near the garage that does my repairs, oil changes, etc. . March, 2014, steering wheel locked, no power steering, had to wait about a half hour until power steering returned. . . Kept turning car off and on every 10 minutes. Contacted Ford customer service 3 times by email (Jan-Mar). My last 3 cars have been Ford products but apparently brand loyalty is not valued. Replies were--sorry you are having issues-no follow up from Ford even when hey knew they were issuing a power steering recall as of April-may, 2014. I paid $2,500 in repairs from Dec'13-Mar'14.
