6 Steering Failed problem of the 2009 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 07/10/2017

Nhtsa action number: dp15001 components steering opened from: April 1, 2015present Ford is refusing to honor a recall for the power steering saying they did a computer update instead. Steering column failed 9,829 miles later. Very dangerous situation when it fails while driving. Ford knew this part was defective but still allowed it to go unfixed. The recall resulted in a computer update to provide warning signal and light to tell you that the part has failed. I do not have any warning lights or alarms and I suspect the computer update was not completed. Google searches resulted in thousands of vehicles with this problem even after the update have the same failure. I hope no one dies from fords irresponsibility and poor quality vehicles. I reported all this to fords rep who basically did not want to hear it. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told why bother we are not going to help you. A supervisor did call back a day later but had the same attitude that the customer is never right and did not care if we ever bought a Ford product again. Just do a general Ford search and its not just my Mariner but many different models with the same problem. It appears that the only recourse we have is with the NHTSA ordering a recall to fix this problem before someone is killed or injured. It must be quite a windfall for Ford to charge all their customers $1500. 00 to fix a million cars or more. Did they do this on purpose to make more money. 10 Steering Failed problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 04/10/2016

Safety recall 14s05 -as a result of the recall Ford upgraded the software in my car in Dec. 2015, but three months later the steering failed. (the car was parked on a quiet san francisco street when I tried to start it and realized that the steering wouldn't work. ) I first towed the car to my local mechanic, who looked at it for a week and then told me that it was related to this safety recall; he advised me to take the car back to Ford. When I re-towed the car to Ford dealership, they refused to honor their written commitment to repair the problem and instead tried to argue that because I got a software update, their responsibility was over. When I asked if the symptoms in my car matched those the recall was meant to fix, the dealership admitted the symptoms matched. They say they can't do anything b/c a "code" didn't trip. I also noticed that the recall says that software upgrades "may" fix the problem and should at least notify the driver by beeping. My car never beeped, but more importantly a software update that "may" fix the problem is not sufficient for safety! the steering issue should be fixed/replaced by Ford! Ford is negligently putting customer lives in danger. Moreover, Ford shouldn't be able to push the cost of a malfunctioning, core product feature onto customers. When I purchased the car, at the top of the market price for it, I was not told "in 50,000 miles you will have to pay several thousand dollars for a completely new steering column because this one will fail and people in your car may die. " please investigate as many consumers are complaining about how Ford is trying to push responsibility for recall 14s05 onto individual car owners.

The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 164,642.

12 Steering Failed problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 01/19/2016

The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The vehicle was repaired according to NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering); however, the repair did not correct the failure. The contact stated that the steering wheel failed and, while attempting to turn, the steering wheel became hard to turn. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who performed a diagnostic test, which located a failure code at the steering wheel column. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 55,000.

13 Steering Failed problem of the 2009 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 03/03/2015

Under recall 14s05 the electronic steering assist was updated but did not fix the defect. The recall only gives a chime and warning that steering is going to fail. The chime went off but didn't give the warning on the instrument cluster until I went to the dealer to see what the chime was. When I was driving down the freeway at 70 mph my steering started to shake and the vehicle began to vibrate. I can only imagine if this were to totally fail while traveling at that speed.

14 Steering Failed problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 11/19/2013

I was driving down freeway when steering failed applied brakes to slowdown and steering would hardly work. Was able to get it to Ford garage steering column had to be replaced as a sensor failed and a clock spring broke.

15 Steering Failed problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 10/22/2013

As driving I went to turn right when the steering failed, it was like an old car with manual steering. Between abruptly forcing the brake pedal to the floor and trying to force the wheel to the right, I managed to go across the street and into a farmers field ( good thing I bought it with awd). When I restarted the vehicle the steering worked fine. After reading similar scenarios on the internet. I then later contacted Ford care and the wonderful personnel tried to tell me that it is not a concern of Ford since it not an issue for Ford at this time. Failure of steering seems to be major safety concern to anyone who drives a vehicle in my opinion. The worst part of this issue is I deal directly with an automotive supplier of steering column assemblies to Ford and other manufacturers in indiana. By knowing what is under plastic and Ford telling me I need to replace it, I ask what quality is in the rest of the vehicle.
