The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 198,000.

3 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 02/18/2020

I bought this vehicle a few months ago. I was driving down the road on the highway at about 75 mph and all of a sudden the steering wheel started to shake. I became scared as I thought I might crash when I started to slow down and try to pull to the side of the road. Steering the car even to the side of the road was hard for me. The steering wheel even shakes when it's in idle. I contacted the manufacturer as upon my goole search, it showed an old recall with this same issue I am having. I took my vehicle to a mechanic who gave me the code of b2278 which is steering shaft torque sensor which will cause the vehicle to be hard to steer. I looked back at past complaints and it shows several owners having the same steering issue but did not report it to the manufacturer. I do not believe that when the recall was active that this issue was repaired at that time. I called Ford and they refuse to correct the issue so that leaves me to get this repaired which will be several hundred dollars I don't have. I completed further research and found that there is no statue of limitations on any recall and in fact I have 10 to 15 years after an active recall to have the recalled issue repaired but no one will honor this. What can I do?.

5 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 06/13/2019

While driving down the baja peninsula my steering wheel began to vibrate and make strange noises. Shortly after I lost all power steering making navigation over the mountain roads extremely dangerous and hard. Once home in the us I contacted a local Ford/Mercury dealer and was told the recall had already been satisfied. But now I'm seeing hundreds of complaints about steering issues occurring within the same time frame as my own.

6 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 03/05/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. While driving approximately 45 mph, the steering wheel vibrate abnormally without warning. The vehicle lost power steering assist ability and veered to the right. The contact was able to safely guide the vehicle off of the roadway. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the torque sensor and possibly the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. A local dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

7 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2009 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 01/24/2019

Loss of electric power steering assist. . . On 01/24/2019 while coming home from the store I noticed at the stop signs my steering wheel would shake back and fourth it has never done this so I just thought like the old vehicles maybe it was just low on fuel so the next morning I tried to drive out of my drive way and my steering was working anymore .

8 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 07/29/2018

There was a recall on the power steering torque sensor on my vehicle I purchased from a used car lot. The previous owner had the recall "fixed" which Ford said was a software update in 2014. My steering wheel started shaking and making a ticking noise so I took it to the shop where they diagnosed this same part as the problem also stating it needed to be replaced, not just "software updated" which is not what was done in 2014. I contacted Ford directly to see if they would fix it and was told it was my responsibility because it was already "repaired" in 2014. This is a safety concern as your steering wheel can seize up with no warning while driving. Do they not have to fix a safety recall? a software update is not "fixing" the problem when the actual part needs to be replaced. Please help!!.

9 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 03/18/2018

In March 2018, I noticed the steering wheel would shake when coming to a stop sign or stop light and make a grinding sound. It continued to do this every time for a couple weeks. Then toward mid March, I was backing out of a driveway and the power steering totally went out. It stated on panel "power steering default assist. " it took extreme effort to steer the wheel to the side as the steering wheel was extremely rigid. Because it is a safety hazard to drive, it has only been driven to move car in apartment parking lot. I got this vehicle in June 2017 from a car dealer with no warranty. Ford says this VIN # is not included in recall for torque problem with power steering failure. As this is a manufacturing defect and a safety hazard, I want this vehicle VIN added to recall list. If I drive it on open road, it will surely cause injury to my family. I can't even maneuver the steering wheel.

10 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 03/01/2018

Steering wheel vibrates back and forth on its own, without any driver input, while vehicle is stopped and running.

11 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 02/23/2018

While driving on i90, recently noticed noise in steering column which has gotten progressively worse and steering wheel now shakes. Taken to Ford dealer was told it was atorque angle steering sensor. Fix about $500 unless the steering column is broken! fix then 1530. How does a steering column break? recall 14s05 for steering problem. Supposedly if this was fixed Ford is released from any recall dealing with steering if it has been replaced. Apparently Ford omitted this info from the public just wondered if I have any recourse to resolve this. Ford dealer says no recall. Ford company says this is not under recall as I had prior recall taken care of. There are numerous other complaints regarding this vehicle and the same exact problem with the exact same outcome. I have had other problems with Ford products resulting in hospitalization and haven't done anythingg I can not allow this one to go unnoticed. Thank you.

12 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 01/29/2018

A message saying power steering assist fault came on and the steering wheel began to shake very noticeably, almost as if the power steering was about to quit. The vehicle was taken to the dealership in 2014 for recall 14s05 and the dealership supposedly did their software update. Now they say it is due to the power steering torque sensor needing replacing which is the exact recall 14s05. They are not honoring it because they said it was fixed when it was brought in previously even though the problem was not fixed, only bandaged so they can charge me $650 later on. This is a safety concern that they are knowingly forcing people to pay for. There is a facebook post regarding this very thing.

13 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 01/19/2018

Steering wheel shakes when parked or driving. Steering wheel assist fault light comes on.

14 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 12/19/2017

While driving the steering wheel started shaking. Within 48hrs I lost power steering and was unable to drive safely. I had to have the car towed to my home because it went out while picking up my kids from school. A mechanic gave me the diagnosis of error b2278. The same code identified for recall 14s05 in replacing the torque sensor. Ford did not resolve the issue properly when my vehicle was serviced for the recall. A software update was done instead of replacing the faulty sensor, which Ford identified as the source of failed steering assistance. I was without a car for 2 weeks because it was not safe to drive. Ford did not honor the recall to replace the sensor.

15 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2009 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 03/08/2016

While my car was parked, my steering wheel began shaking violently upon starting my engine on February 22,2016. The shaking continued every time I drove my car at high or low speeds and also while in park with the engine running. On March 8, 2016, after starting my engine, I noticed the power steering was completely non functioning. There has been a complete loss of power steering control and the steering wheel was very difficult to turn at low speeds.

16 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 02/15/2016

I got a recall notice in the mail for the power steering that it could go out. Took it to a Ford dealership - autonation in white bear lake mn_ and they did a software update and closed the recall out as complete. Almost immediately the steering wheel began shaking intermittently and randomly. It got to the point it was shaking violently so I took it back in and was told the steering column needed replaced. Even though this was one of the options to do in the first place on the recall they said it was no longer covered and would cost $1300. 00. I called Ford and they refused to cover it as well because the software update was done. Now it is not able to be driven safely until I can afford the repairs. It clearly is related to the recall as I know the 3 options were to update the software, replace torque sensor or replace steering column. I have read countless similar complaints online - yet autonation nor Ford will fix the car.

17 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2009 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 02/15/2016

The contact owns a 2009 Mercury Mariner. While the vehicle was idling, the steering wheel began to vibrate violently and the power steering warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 97,000.

18 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 02/04/2016

Steering wheel shakes and grinding sounds coming from steering column this happens when the vehicle is in motion or stationary. Local Ford dealership diagnosed as a faulty torque sensor which would result in a loss of power steering. Had a recall on the vehicle approximately a year ago because of loss of power steering due to the torque sensor. At the time of recall my torque sensor was not failing so the dealership only did a computer software update. Clearly the update did nothing to correct the issue with the torque sensor associated with the recall, however now Ford will not correct the issue with the vehicle. I have not personally lost my power steering yet in a situation that could have caused injury however there are a whole slew of complaints from people reporting the exact same problem. A sudden loss of steering is a big deal and very dangerous, it is something Ford should be required to correct.

19 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 01/12/2016

The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. While driving 10 mph, the steering wheel began to shake violently and the power steering light illuminated. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering torque sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact also stated that the vehicle was previously repaired for a steering recall, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

20 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 03/22/2015

I took my 2008 Mercury Mariner in for service recall 14s05 for the torque sensor that can cause the power steering to revert to manual. Within the last week the electronic power steering assist had quit at least 4 times. At the same time, the steering wheel began to vibrate and shake when the vehicle was stopped or idling. After taking the vehicle in for the recall issue, I was notified that they vibration/shaking is due to the steering gear that is not covered by the recall. This issue occurred only after the recall issue and I do not believe that it is a mere coincidence that this happened simultaneously and is not as a result of the bad torque sensor. Ford states that there is no other documented problems with this and that I will be responsible for the cost of the repairs for the steering gear. There have been many known issues with this vehicle including a previous recall for the transmission cooler leak and defective tone rings in the abs (I've replaced the passenger side once and the driver side twice in a six month period with each individual repair costing on average $350).

21 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 02/22/2015

Never had a problem till I recieved a paper back in Nov. 2014 for a recall on power steering so I took it in they said it checked out they updated it and ever since there just wasnt something right about our steering. At red lights the steering wheel would vibrate and jerk back and forth without me touching it and then today I heard 3 chimes and seen nothing pop up on dash then bam the warning light came on and said power steering assist failure and I had to use everything I had to steer it home.

22 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 01/16/2015

Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that the recall notice for NHTSA campaign number 14v284000 (steering) was received in may 2014. The vehicle was taken to the dealer in August 2014 and the power steering software update remedy was performed. On January 16, 2014 while driving the steering wheel began to vibrate and erroneously turn before eventually malfunctioning completely making the steering wheel very difficult to turn. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the steering column was faulty and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that due to the previous software updates the vehicle was not eligible for the recall remedy to replace the affected parts. The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 114,000. Jft.

23 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 01/15/2015

I took my car in for the power steering recall they supposedly fixed it I have no proof of that. Since I have gotten my vehicle back the steering wheel started shaking while at a complete stop I took my vehicle back to the dealership and they have told me that I need a new steering column because the torque sensor is bad which is part of the recall and that Ford will not cover this under the recall because they already fix it which again I have my concerns that they did not really fix it in the first place.

24 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2009 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 01/09/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that the when the vehicle was started, the steering wheel vibrated without warning. In addition, the contact stated that when the wheel was turned to the left or to the right, there was a clicking noise emitting from steering column. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed that the software needed to be updated. The vehicle was serviced under NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 115,910. Pam.

25 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2009 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 12/16/2014

Started my car to warm up and noticed my steering wheel vibrating and twitching side to side . Upon driving it it still continued to vibrate and make a noise. The vibration and noise has become worse. Called Ford dealer to have it looked at thought it might have something to do with the electric power steering recall. I received the recall in October but at this time my car was not acting up and I have busy work schedule so had not had it looked at yet. But on December 29th , 2014 I took it in. The mechanic tolls me all the recall was for was a software update. So I figured that would fix the vibration and it didn't . I feel just because my car don't throw a code at that time I took it in Ford will not replace the torque sensor now even though the mechanic could visible see my steering wheel vibrating and twitching. So now I get to fix it my self like many other Ford owners. All the software did for was is warn us our power steering is out. They should have been made to replace the defective torque sensors. If our torque sensors wasn't going out we wouldn't had needed that software up date. Ford is getting away with the cheep simple fix. I don't know much about the computers they use on the cars but the computer probably don't though a code unless something is not working at all not just going bad. The mechanic should be trained to diagnose with their eyes and ears too.

26 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 04/30/2014

Steering wheel shaking. Vibrating, as if quickly turning on and off between settinga. Tonight my power seering went out on my way home from work. I work 60 hrs a week. In a bad neighborhood. I can't afford for this vehicle to go out on me. And now it is. And Mercury wont help me. They will play dumb and stand by while the whole vehicle falls apart as I write the last check of the $24,000 car note next month. How convenient. Just after the warranty ends.

27 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 02/22/2014

Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated while driving 45 mph the steering wheel began to shake and it locked without warning. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 69,800. Rk.

28 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 02/20/2014

The 2008 Mercury Mariner steering wheel shakes while at low mph or stopped completely. Intermittent loss of power steering when vehicle is started. Concern that it will loose power while driving though it has not happened yet. Hope there is enough awareness that Ford acnowledges this and issues a safety recall.

29 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 02/20/2014

Driving down road, at 65 mph, steering wheel starts to vibrate, and is making a chattering noise at bottom of steering collumn. Stop vehicle, steering wheel vibrates more with brake on. Next time I start vehicle, there is no power steering. I shut off vehicle, restart, then the power steering works. This has happened several times. I talked to service manger at 2 dealers, they do not know what the problem is. One dealer was going to e-mail Ford to find out, waiting for a reply from him. I look up, Mercury Mariner sreering problems on internet, there are thousand of people have same problem. It is apparently an electronic steering sensor, in the steerin collumn that is bad. Went to Ford dealer, talked to parts person, and service manager, they have never heard of this problem. They find a picture of the steering column, but can't find a part number, so can't tell me a cost of the part. Frustrated. I need to get this fixed before some one gets hurt.

30 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 02/10/2014

The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that the steering wheel would shake vigorously until the wheel was turned. 31 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 01/29/2014

A couple days ago I started my car as usual before going to work to let it warm due to the weather. As I started backing out of my drive I realized my steering wheel isn't moving like it's supposed to. I stopped and turned the car off and then back on, then it was fine. As I'm driving and getting ready to switch lanes on the highway it does it again so I pull on the shoulder and get out the car to check under the hood, a man pulls over to help me seeing as I'm a woman on the side of the road and in my military uniform. He says it could be because of the weather but it should be fine. Now after 2 or 3 days the steering wheel shakes and vibrates and a rattling noise occurs at low speed and certain positions when the wheel is turned, or even at a standstill position. It has recurred several times since the first time and always when the car starts. It can be stopped by turning off the ignition and restarting the car. Also a wrench shows up in the message center, as I read my manual come to find out that's for the transmission. I've read a lot of the comments and complaints and have to wonder, will it take a death because of this for Ford to realize we're not making this up and it's not due to poor or lack of maintenance.

32 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 01/02/2014

When starting up the car, I was unable to turn the steering wheel without significant effort. Felt like the wheels were frozen to the ground. After turning the car off and on again, it let go and steered as usual. Now the steering wheel shakes and vibrates and a rattling noise occurs at low speed and certain positions when the wheel is turned. It has recurred several times since the first time and always when the car starts. It can be stopped by turning off the ignition and restarting the car.

33 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 02/10/2013

My 2008 Mercury Mariner intermittently loses power steering. Luckily, so far, it has failed when the vehicle is started. It returns when you shut the car off and restart it. The steering wheel also vibrates when stopped and the motor is running. There is also a "clanking" noise when you turn the wheel. This is the vehicle my daughter is learning to drive in, and I'm concerned about her safety and her passenger's safety. I took the vehicle into a repair shop and they said I may need a new steering column and have heard of a lot of complaints about steering problems with the 2008's. In fact, the day it was in for service there was a 2008 Ford escape(basically the same vehicle) there with the same problem.

34 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 02/05/2013

-the steering wheel will vibrate or chatter when stopped at a light or stop sign, if the vehicle is parked and idling the steering wheel will visibly oscillate back and forth, to a small amount. -on several occassions the steering wheel wouldn't turn in either direction, once the vehicle was started and shifted into drive; independent of whether it was the beginning of the day or if the vehicle had been recently used. To resolve this issue required shifting to park, powering the vehicle down, and restarting the process. -the certified mechanic at the dealership indicated that this issue wasn't servicable by them and would require replacement of the steering column and electric actuator "pump" mechanism. Very expensive!.

35 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2009 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 12/15/2012

While traveling at 55 mph, power steering stopped working making vehicle very hard to steer. By turning key off and restarting, while tugging on steering wheel, power steering will start working and may last 30 minutes or 3 minutes. While working, steering wheel shakes and makes noise. Vehicle pulls to the left. Ford denies having had this problem before and wants to replace steering column for $1,396. 57. Complaints on the internet about this problem are numerous. I do not want to buy another defective steering column and don't understand that power steering problem would be solved.
