1 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 02/26/2021

Passenger seat airbag occupant sensor/mat failed causing airbag light to be on and for airbags not to deploy incase of a accident . Mini did not recall this issues but put a warranty extension for 10years for this defect they are aware about. This has expired for many vehicles including mine . This is safety issue that's a potential risk of injury or death incase of a accident and the fact that Mini Cooper does not recall this matter is inhuman . Please help with this matter.

2 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 03/15/2020

Recently purchased a used 2008 Mini Cooper. Passenger side airbag sensor warning light is on and always stays on. This is a known defect that Mini has covered under warranty/recall. I took vehicle to BMW/Mini dealer in birmingham, al and was informed that this particular recall expired in 2018, or with vehicles with more than 120,000 miles. Mine has 123,000 mi. Also called Mini customer service and received the same information. Many videos exist on internet/youtube about this particular defect and how to bypass problem by installing a part that bypasses the sensor or by using a scan tool to erase the code to remove the warning light. Neither of these solutions seem safe. I am concerned that the car's passenger airbag would fail to deploy in the event of a collision. . Read more...

6 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2012 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 08/09/2017

Warning lamp for "airbag system failed" illuminated one day while driving on a straight street "in town" approx 25mph. At first light went off if I buckled passenger seatbelt (even when seat was empty) now it won't go off even doing that. . . Also doesn't matter if driving at high or low speeds, road types, turning, stopping, parked, driving, passenger in rider's seat, no riding passenger, etc, it will illuminate (& I never place anything on my passenger seat). Took to a mechanic - he checked & provided code 9435. Stated airbags might not deploy when this warning lamp is illuminated. Said this is a common problem with Mini Coopers & is a safety issue that he thinks probably should be covered under a recall. Contacted Mini dealership - said no recall for my vehicle. From what I have found there are almost 100,000 other Minis that have had a recall for this same problem, however, they tell me my vehicle is not included in the recall - want to charge me Minimally $65 just to re-diagnose the code, then labor & parts to fix! called Mini customer service - told me no recall for my vehicle & they referred me here.

7 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 07/24/2017

I recently purchased a 2009 Mini Cooper and the airbag and seatbelt warning lights come on whenever I get in the car. The light came on recently when I started the car and it now occurs every time I turn the motor on. I've been online researching the problem and discovered that this may mean that the airbags will not deploy if I have an accident. This appears to be a problem facing a number of Mini Cooper owners and BMW has not resolved this problem after many complaints.

8 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 05/01/2017

34,000 miles 2009 Mini Cooper. Passenger airbag light on and off intermittently. Quoted cost to repair about $800 just for the part, possibility of airbags not deploying when in an accident. Seems to be a typical Mini issue with a slew of similar issues (sometimes multiple replacements), sensor in seat cushion and entire seat would need replaced. Same problem that resulted in 2005-2008 model recalls, but not 2009? with the issue being this prevalent? very worrisome, passengers riding in car without the protection of an airbag deploying.

10 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 06/27/2016

Passenger side airbag warning light keeps coming on whether a passenger is seated or not in front seat. It originally went on and off at sporadic times and mimi told me that I should not place anything on passengers seat like my handbag as it will assume a passenger is sitting in the seat. The later part of June 2016, it came on and stayed on continuously. Currently, have an outstanding repair order with Mini but was told part has been on back order for well over a month. Price quoted for repair $1240. 00. I drive the interstate on a daily basis and am concerned that the air bags will not deploy if I'm involved in an accident. The light comes on as soon as the car is started and will sometimes go off for a few minutes while driving, but will then come back on.

11 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2013 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 10/15/2015

I was involved in a car accident on 10/15/2015 which I rear ended a pickup truck. I was going roughly 45-50 mph when the truck in front slammed their brakes which caused me to crash into his rear end of the truck. The front of the car is in bad shape and luckily I was not injured. However, the airbags in the car did not deploy which I find very disturbing.

12 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 09/17/2015

Takata recall?? the seat occupancy sensor malfunctions - 3 warning lights - always on. Took Mini into dealership for this problem on 9/17/15. They diagnosed: j# 1 511mzotherdiag general diagnosis vehicle needs right seat weight sensor replaced. Part needs to be ordered - $1493. 47 part cost - customer advised. Neither BMW/Mini corporate or the dealership can say when the replacement part will be available - nor can they guarantee occupant safety - airbags may not deploy there is an accident. The mileage on the Mini is 26,959. When is this vehicle to be included in the recall? and when will the parts be available to fix it?.

13 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 09/17/2015

I was a passenger in a Mini Cooper 2006, my friend was hit head on by a drunk driver on a city street. My friend's Mini Cooper 2006 was totaled. The airbags did not deploy as a result of the front passenger mat sensor defect. I suffered multiple injuries to my chest, hands, arms, and neck that are very serious.

14 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 12/11/2014

The passenger airbag off light illuminated. It is intermittent and diagnostics show that there is an issue with the sensor in the seat. This requires complete replacement of the seat. Although there is no danger to the passenger (airbag will not deploy), the car will not pass inspection when it comes due in Nov 2015.

15 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 08/31/2014

Takata recall: the airbag light came on over a year ago and it says that the passenger air bag is turned off. It will come on and off randomly. I brought it in to the certified independent Mini mechanic in town who said the passenger occupancy sensor is faulty and will need to be replaced. As it is right now, the passenger airbag would not deploy in the case of an accident.

16 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 11/13/2013

The red air bag warning light came on. It won't go out. The Mini dealer in birmingham said it's not covered under warranty. Mini USA said the same thing. However, BMW recalled their 2006 models for the same problem. Several other Mini owners are reporting the same problem. The owners' manual states that the air bags may not deploy properly in the event of a crash if the warning light is on. This is a safety issue, and Mini USA needs to address it.

17 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 09/09/2013

In addition to my previous post, more information on this situation, this note sent to Miniusa. Com, my 2006 Mini Cooper has the airbag light illuminated above the rear view mirror and is generating an error 71, passenger occupancy sensor fault. It is my understanding this is due to a faulty sensor mat under the seat. From my research I see that this has been covered under an extended warranty for the oc3 seat mat sensor which is used in BMW as well as Mini models. I am requesting that this sensor be replaced in my Mini Cooper as I fear the passenger airbag will not deploy in an accident due to the documented faulty sensor. . Read more...

18 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2002 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

The vehicle was purchased used in 2011, soon there after the air bag light came on, it was taken to a local repair shop and the air bag light was reset, I was advised by the shop owner that this is a common problem in the older Mini. He also advised that it is extremely expensive, as Mini USA basically throws all new parts at it at the owners expense without really getting to the bottom of the problem. The air bag light illuminated again in July of 2015, right after I had returned from vacation, apparently the parking valet had slid the seat back and most likely stretched the air bag seat harness. This is a proven defect which Mini USA has finally addressed with a recall of 2005 to 2008 models only. It is related to a faulty seat harness that cannot detect whether a passenger is in the right seat. It is also been shown that in most cases the airbags will not deploy in an accident.

19 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 06/10/2013

From my research, the 2006 Mini has a faulty passenger occupancy sensor in the passenger seat bottom requiring a replacement at a cost of over $1000. Since 2006 was the first year for this requirement, I believe they did not properly test the device before releasing them into production as I have researched and read on many failures of this device. I cannot determine conclusively if the airbag will or will not deploy in this situation and Mini will be liable in a situation if it does not deploy the airbag properly with a passenger seated. This is a situation that needs to be remedied through a recall. Mini extended their airbag system warranty on the 2002 - 2005 models to 10 years or 150,000 miles and should do the same for the 2006+ models.

20 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 02/07/2013

When I started my vehicle, 2006 Mini Cooper, the passenger airbag warning lights came on for no apparent reason there was no one in the passenger seat at the time. There was an August, 2008 BMW recall on 150,000 2002-2006 Mini Cooper's for this same passenger light airbag issue. BMW extended the warranty to 10 years on all of these recailed vehicles by VIN#. I had this diagnosed by a BMW service center & a faulty passenger sensor pad in the passenger seat is causing the issue. The sensor pad is attached to the bottom of the passenger seat so both items have to be replaced which will cost approx. $1,200. I spoke to Mini USA & my VIN# was not on the 2008 recall. I then asked Mini USA how do I get my VIN# on the recall list & was to told to go to this website & file a complaint. After your investigation, Mini USA told me that you can have my vehicle VIN# added to the August, 2008 recall. Mini USA was also unable to tell me if my passenger seat airbag will properly deploy in the event of a accident. I consider this an extremely serious safety issue (possible death) if the airbag does not properly deploy because of a faulty passenger seat sensor pad! please help. . . . . Thanks.

21 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 10/30/2012

The seat sensor is faulty. It reads that someone under 30lbs is in it (disabling the airbag) the dash light verifies it is off. This problem is intermittent to this day. So if a crash occurs the sensor won't read correctly if anyone is in the seat or not, the airbag may not deploy and if it does will do so possibly with too much force.

22 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 06/08/2012

The right front occupant sensor for air bag appears to be defective. It had to be replaced. We have heard of several Mini Cooper's that have defective seat sensors. When this sensor fails, the air bags may not deploy as designed. This is a safety system failure. Cost to replace this sensor was over $1,400. 00.

23 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2007 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 05/16/2012

Upon starting my car in the parking lot at the end of a work day, an indicator light came on in my 2007 Mini Cooper indicating a problem with the air bag. My mechanic was able to determine that the problem was with the driver's side air bag (code 93a8 stage 1). He reset the light and the same problem occurred a few days later. He checked the code again and it was the same. As a result, he contacted the nearest Mini service center. Although this is a known problem with the air bag connection, Mini charges about $600 to replace it even though no accident had occurred, no hard stops, nothing to trigger the air bag. Until the problem is fixed, the driver's side air bag will not deploy in the case of an accident.

24 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

Our 2006 Mini Cooper hatchback's passenger side air bag indicator stays on with or without a passenger. Sometimes with a passenger, it will go on and off sporadically. If the light is on when there is a passenger it would be logical to assume that the airbag will not deploy. After researching this problem on the internet, it would appear that this problem is wide-spread and dangerous.

25 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 03/12/2012

Airbag warning light comes on whether or not a passenger is in the front passenger seat. The dealer says the airbag sensor in the seat needs to be replaced. This cost us over $1500. In 2006 Mini issued an extended warranty for 2002 and 2003 models with the same defect. BMW's investigation of the same sensor under the passenger seats of BMW autos resulted in a recall of this part. Nhtsa action number: ea08001. This is a serious safety concern. Message boards have instances of people paying for this expensive safety defect at the dealer, and the problems returning after 1 to 2 years in some cases. Someone with be seriously hurt or killed if the passenger airbag fails to deploy.

26 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2005 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 12/03/2011

Air bag warning lamp turns on and remains on randomly. Diagnostic indicates passenger seat occupancy sensor is defective. The passenger seat is used infrequently and looks like new. We have been told this is a safety issue that could result in either the air bag failing to deploy or deploying with too great of force. The cost of repair is prohibitive and yet the issue makes the vehicle almost un saleablimpossible to sell without the repair.

30 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2002 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 04/27/2004

I just found this web site and after reading through the various issues other people are having with their Mini, I decided I should also go ahead and share my issues as well. Back in April of 2004, I was hit on the front passenger side by a Honda accord traveling about 50 miles an hour and my airbags failed to deploy. I never had a check engine light or an airbag light for that matter but it's a scary thought not having your airbags deploy, especially at such a high speed of impact. I used to be in love with Mini's but I have been so "soured" by them as of late with all of the issues I have been having. My automatic transmission is shot and because of that, I can't even start my car.
