Mini Cooper owners have reported 112 problems related to air bag light on (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mini Cooper based on all problems reported for the Cooper.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? the airbag light keeps coming on and off, as well as the seatbelt lights. It can be inspected if requested. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? if the airbags or seat belts are not functioning properly this could result in injury up to and including death. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? it keeps happening, not been to a dealer yet though. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? no inpsection has been done. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? it appears that the sunroof has been leaking down the dash on the passeneger side. That leaks right onto the fuse box which could be causing some of the issues. If the fuse box is being leaked onto this could be a potential fire hazard.

Passenger airbag light stays on and it is deactivated when I am driving. This appears to be a known problem with no recall in effect. I am seeking bypass options online to buy to always keep the airbag on regardless of having a passenger sitting there. Still very unsafe if a kid sits in that seat. This needs to be recalled.
Air bag light came on and does not turn off.
The passenger seat air bag light came on one day when starting the car. I took it into a Mini specialist and they said it was the indicator sensor in the seat. Other Mini models have had the same problem and have been recalled. He quoted $600-700 to repair it. He could not guarantee the air bag would deploy in an accident. This seems like a no brainer.

The passenger side seat sensor goes on and off when a passenger is seated. Light indicators and alarms sound intermittently. Passenger air bags are turned off when passenger is seated and car is moving. If there is no passenger this does not occur.

Passenger airbag sensor malfunctioning with airbag light on and not certain what will happen if airbag needs to deploy. This seems to be a widespread problem based on internet search. Mini recalled first generation models for this issue but did not include the second generation vehicles (mine).

Takata recall. Airbag light came on when I sat in my car one day and when I took it to the Mini Cooper dealership a couple of days later, it was found that the driver head airbag has failed for no apparent reason. The airbag has never been used. Having the airbag fail on a random day is very dangerous, considering the fact that an accident could have occurred that day and the airbag would have never protected the driver. This is very disappointing and incredibly strange for an airbag to fail.
Tl- the contact own 2009 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that the air bag warning indicator illuminated. The south shore Mini Cooper was contacted and diagosed the vehicle's the air bag sensor mat was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturers was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 17,000. Kh.
The air bag/seat belt system indicator lamps on the dash (behind the steering wheel) and in the speedometer cluster (center of dashboard) are on while driving the car with the seat belts properly fastened. This began on about 12/21/2014 with an odometer reading of 81,190 miles. Shortly after that I contacted the motorwerks Mini, bloomington, mn, and was told there was no recall on this issue and it was not covered by warranty. I also contacted Mini customer relations and checked the NHTSA. Gov site to confirm this. I kept watching the takata recalls, but my car was never included. I also called the dealership and Mini customer relations several more time, but got the same answer. Then on 5/11/17, we received a limited extended warranty letter from Mini that covered the seat occupancy mat. The problem was that Mini's "policy" was to first have the problem diagnosed at a Mini dealer at our cost. We went ahead and did that, paid almost $148. 50, only to be told the issue was with the computer, or possibly the wiring harness and neither of those issues are covered by the limited warranty extension. The estimated repair cost ranged from about $1,300-$4,000. I have the dealership invoice (#1mcs838674), dated 5/19/17 (odometer 97,852) if needed. As of today, June 8, 2017, the lights are still on and the odometer reads 98,069 miles (see attached photos). I am requesting that the NHTSA review this issue to determine if is systemic and might warrant a further investigation or a mandated recall. If more information is needed, please let me know. Thanks. .

Passenger airbag light flickers on and off even when no one or anything is in the seat. Does it when stationary or moving.
The contact owns a 2007 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that the seat belt indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to Mini of nashville (located at 1572 memory lane nashville, TN 37027 615-340-7098) where it was diagnosed that the seat mat sensor needed to be replaced; however, the part was on backorder. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not offer any assistance. The failure mileage was 46,000.
The contact owns a 2007 Mini Cooper. While driving various speeds, the air bag indicator remained illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 47,000.
The contact owns a 2009 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that the air bag warning indicator had illuminated and remained illuminated. Due to the air bag warning indicator illuminating, the air bag warning chime was activated as well. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 15v205000 (air bags) however the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 66,000.
The car has 55000 miles and the airbag light is on. After research the problem seems to be with the passenger occupancy sensor, also known as a passenger occupancy mat. Mini has recalled many vehicles for this reason, however they continue to refuse the problems continues with the 2009 model. This is a safety and costly issue.
Airbag sensor mat does not recognize whether a person is sitting on the passenger side thereby not activating the airbag; this has been happening on & off for months; passenger airbag light comes on immediately despite occupancy while parked and during driving (all conditions-highway, city street, turning; etc. Started approximately from 75k miles; now constant from 85k on.
The contact owns a 2007 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that the front passenger side air bag light remained illuminated. The dealer diagnosed that the front passenger seat occupant detection malfunctioned and/or was faulty. The VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign number: 15v205000 (air bags). The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 61,000.
I am the owner of this car. I have researched on line the air bag light on the passengers side of this car. Many many complaints are listed and you are well aware of the problem. I supposedly need to replace some parts and labor to the tune of $1904!!! I am on a fixed income and I do not have this money. Since you have issued a recall for convertibles in the Mini and recalled cars in the BMW line for this, why isn't this a covered expense? it seems like the car is set up to have this problem and the customers are left to worry about fixing it. Any product that has a defect and is still sold needs to show respect for their buyers and fix things that are well known as problems. I can not afford this and I am often in the passenger's seat. If anything happens due to the air bag not connected correctly I feel that anyone involved in the Mini/BMW plants are responsible. You have full knowledge of the problem and you are putting profit before consumers. This is a disgusting way to run a business.
The passenger air bag indicator light illuminates intermittently, even when an adult passenger is seated there. I have researched this issue and see that there is a recall for earlier model Cooper and Cooper s models. I have experienced the exact same symptoms that are listed in that recall, and according to this site so have 2009 Cooper owners. This recall needs to be extended accordingly.

The contact owns a 2006 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 60 mph, there was a loss of power steering. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the power steering pump was replaced however the failure recurred the next day. The vehicle was taken back to the mechanic and unknown repairs were performed. In addition, the air bag warning indicator illuminated continuously. On a separate occasion, the alternator failed and was not replaced. The contact mentioned that the engine cooling fan also failed to function, which caused the radiator to be replaced twice. The engine was replaced at a different time. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 118,000.
At 140,000 mile: + air bag light came on. Dealer said that the airbag computer module will cost $1,000 to replace. I see on-line blogs and NHTSA have had numerous complaints on the air bag dash light coming on and NHTSA is still investigating.

Takata recall the warning indicator that my passenger air bag is off comes on frequently (with or without passenger). I am afraid to let anyone ride in my car. When I took it to the dealer they said it was an internal failure of passenger side front mat sensor, that I had not done anything to cause the problem, that there was a worldwide shortage of the part, and that it is a $1200. 00 fix. I do not believe I should have to pay for that repair!! I wrote to BMW in July---no response. This happens every time I drive somewhere---with or without passenger. It comes on and off. . . . . Driving or stationary, all situations. The only documentation I have is copy of the dealership labor report from the diagnosis and a copy of my 7-19-2016 letter to BMW sent via email to Miniusa. Com. I have no way to scan those to attach.
Tl- the contact owns a 2009 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicles passenger air bag warning indicator illuminated on the vehicles instrument panel. The contact stated that the failure would occur intermittently and had gotten worse over time. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the air bag module had failed and would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 58,000. Wh.
Passenger seat air bag light stays on most of the time. Local dealership diagnosed passenger seat sensor mat defective and must be replaced. On January 12, 2016, I prepaid the cost of the replacement part at nearly $1,400 dollars. On January 21, 2016, the dealership informed me that the part is on national back order. Estimated time of arrival is may 2016. With last year's recall of 2005 and 2006 Mini Cooper hardtops and 2005- 2008 convertibles for this defective safety part, I am shocked and disappointed there is a back order and such a long wait time for the replacement part to arrive.
Front passenger seat air bag indicator light stayed on for long periods and sometimes went off. Yesterday BMW/Mini dealership diagnosed seat sensor mat sending fault code. Dealership would not let me have copy of diagnostic report and I asked several times to have a copy. Part must be defective. My out of pocket cost to replace defective sensor mat is $1,371. 00 for the part which I had to prepay before dealership would order it. Labor to install and program new passenger seat sensor mat is estimated at $505. 00. Mileage at time of failure around 22,000. Car is on an island where you cannot drive long distances. I must replace the sensor mat now, at my own expense, in order to pass state of hawaii annual automobile safety inspection. Mini Coopers manufactured in 2005 and 2006 were recalled last year for defective passenger seat sensor mats. I think the 2007 Mini Coopers should also be recalled for same defect. Mini Cooper 2007 convertibles were recalled for defective passenger seat mat sensor. Why omit 2007 Mini Cooper hard tops from that recall? if my car is recalled in the future for this defect, will I be reimbursed by BMW/Mini for my out of pocket expenses??.
I took my car into the auto shop for routine oil change and to check the air bag light since it came on at 56,000 miles. I figured it was an error and just needed to be reset, after a diagnostic was done I was told I would need to pay $1,100 for a air bag mat sensor front seat part that's currently on back order in germany and I wouldn't be able to buy one till April 2016. This is a major problem for a number of reasons. One, it is a safety hazard and somebody can die. Two I cannot see my speedomoter when I am driving so I no longer know how fast I am going. I am very upset whe ni expressed this concern to Mini Cooper corporate customer service and they didn't seem to care and told me the 2009 is not part of the 2008 air bag recalls. Are you serious? this is a safety issue. I never expected this from BMW/Mini. There needs to be a recall on this before there is serious injury or death!.
The contact owns a 2009 Mini Cooper. While driving at any speed, the passenger side air bag light remained illuminated. The failure recurred numerous times when a passenger occupied the seat. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 29,000.
Airbag sensor mat does not recognize whether a person is sitting on the passenger side thereby not activating the airbag; this has been happening on & off for months; passenger airbag light comes on immediately despite occupancy while parked and during driving (all conditions-highway, city street, turning. This issue started right after the warranty was over. This is a safety hazard, as none of the airbags will deploy in case of impact. I fear for my safety. This is a manufacturing defect.
Same issue as many others have reported. Recently purchased with 68k miles. The passenger air bag indicator remains on no matter is a passenger is sitting there or not. Air bag seat mat sensor on the passenger side needs replacement but the dealership reported that there are no seat replacements available or even in production. Nor is there a possible date for a replacement. There is no way to make the car safe to transport passengers.
The contact owns a 2006 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that the passenger side air bag warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 15v205000 (air bags) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The failure mileage was unknown. The VIN was not available.
I want to know when recall 15v-205 is going to be implemented. My car is affected by this recall and I was notified by Mini USA in June. My airbag light has been on for 5 months and Mini says it still does not have the parts to fix the problem. I consider this to be a reasonable period of ime.
Air bag light came on after the passenger side seat was moved forward to allow entry to the rear seat. This problem is well documented by numerous other owners on the internet and BMW has recalled cars older and newer than my car and convertibles from the same year.
The contact owns a 2008 Mini Cooper. The contact started the vehicle and the front passenger's side air bag warning indicator illuminated continuously. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who confirmed that the air bag sensor would need to be replaced. The manufacturer and dealer were notified and they were unable to provide an expected date for the part to become available. The approximate failure mileage was 52,000. The VIN was unavailable.
