Failure Date: 04/11/2022

The passenger airbag warning light indicating the passenger side airbag is disabled is on, even if passenger is seated. The warning was intermittent starting in 2015 and the continuous since 2022. Our mechanic tells us the on-board computer system no longer recognizes the passenger front airbag sensor. Therefore, the airbags are being disabled for both passenger and driver.

6 Warning Light On problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 05/01/2020

Airbag sensor fails to pass the vehicle's internal safety check and a warning light is displayed. This light indicates that there is a fault with the airbag, and it will not deploy if involved in a wreck while this light is on. For the past 9 months, this sensor has been coming on intermittently at first, and now it stays on constantly while the vehicle is in operation. A safety recall was issued for this problem for other models/years of the Mini Cooper, but when I look up my VIN it shows no recall. In online searches, I see many other owners of this same make/model of Mini Cooper who have the same issue. This is a serious safety issue, one that should be covered by the manufacturer, not an expense I should have to incur.

9 Warning Light On problem of the 2013 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 06/21/2019

Takata recall: the warning light is always on the past 6 months saying my airbag on passenger side is not operational. Mini dealers want to charge me $145 plus to check if the airbag is defective. Don't they have to check this at no charge for me? I am very concerned for my passengers, but cannot afford to do this. Repair shop said rf seat occupancy sensor needs replacement. Cost $1082. Advised me to check with you if that is covered by Mini. Issue #2: had to replace all 4 faulty ignition coils. Serviced throttle body. Cost me many $$$$.

13 Warning Light On problem of the 2012 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 11/08/2016

Passenger side airbag is randomly disabled (with warning light/tone) when my 63# dog is sitting in the seat. Cause is a faulty "passenger seat occupant mat" that others have reported will cost over $1500 to replace. This has happened numerous times but only while driving so can't really get a picture of the warning light safely.

14 Warning Light On problem of the 2011 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 08/01/2016

Takata recall. . . Air bag passenger side warning light is on. Local dealer wants $140 to "look" to see what the problem is and $800. To fix it. Can't afford this. Why can't we get help from dealer/mgr?.

15 Warning Light On problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 07/04/2016

I went out of the country for 21 day and left my Mini parked in the garage. I am the only driver of my car and take pride in appearance and maintenance. I was extremely surprised when I returned the warning lights was on. The mileage is just under 60000. The seat belt and airbag warning light on out of the blue (stays on). When I took my Mini to the auto repair shop, it was suggested to look for recalls first. Upon research found alot of complaints about the same issue but no recalls for 2009. This is very disappointing and BMW should be ashamed. I will never purchase another product from BMW and will warn others before they consider making the same mistake. I will be trading my car in for an american made vehicle.

16 Warning Light On problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 04/26/2016

My 2008 Mini Cooper was in accident in Jan 2016. The (passenger) light came on and it was immediately take to autobody shop. The passenger airbag warning light was evaluated and added to repairs. The seat map sensor is the chief problem. The car is undrivable. The dealership in sterling indicated that it would take 15-30 day to received the part. The part was delayed until March 24,2016. Three days prior to delivery it was updated to Jul 13, 2016. At this point my rental car from the insurance company ran out. I contacted customer care but was not able to receive a date nor assistance about my part and lost of vehicle. After conversation with liberty mutual, auto shop and dealership, we were told that the vehicle was safe to drive without a passenger in the seat. No resolution has been made, many individuals ( consumer, insurance company and auto shop) involved in the situation stated it was not safe nor could loss be guaranteed. As of the 4/18/2016, the part has been put on indefinite back order. Currently there is no known time frame return of vehicle. I am without transportation and I will need to purchase another car. Additionally I have heard from other repair facilities, Mini's passenger seat occupancy sensor affects far more model years than those for which BMW has already announced recalls. I am also aware that more than 60 Mini owners are waiting on this part as well.

17 Warning Light On problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper

The manufacturer inspected the vehicle and concluded that the front driver side air bag deployment was not caused by a manufacturer defect. The vehicle was not repaired. Failure Date: 11/30/2015

The contact owns a 2009 Mini Cooper. The contact started the ignition and the front passenger's side air bag warning light illuminated intermittently. The vehicle was not included under NHTSA campaign number: 15v205000 (air bags). The contact mentioned that the part needed to perform the repair was unavailable. 22 Warning Light On problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 05/13/2015

Air bag and seat belt warning light on. The dealership said it will cost $2600 to replace the parts. This is a serious safety issue, not wear or tear. Existing recalls for air bags have not included my vehicle make/model.

23 Warning Light On problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 05/11/2015

The passenger side airbag warning light went on at about 28,000 miles. From what I read online this has happened with other Mini models, which have been recalled for this reason (prior years). It seems to mean that the sensor is not working and has to be replaced or the passenger side airbag will not inflate in an accident.

24 Warning Light On problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 05/08/2015

I purchased my 2008 Mini Cooper brand new from Mini of the woodlands in texas. About a year ago, the passenger airbag warning light started illuminating randomly, which disables the passenger airbag while it is illuminated. This happened more and more frequently, until it stays illuminated most of the time now. I brought it to Mini if the woodlands for evaluation, and was told that the seat sensor had gone bad, and it would cost $1,900 to replace it. I find this failure to be a little odd, considering that my Mini's passenger seat has almost never had anyone in it! also, sliding the seat forward/backward seems to affect the frequency & duration of the sensor failures; though the overall frequency & duration continues to increase. From what I've seen online, and heard from other repair facilities, Mini's passenger seat occupancy sensor affects far more model years than those for which BMW has already announced recalls. I'd even be happy if Mini could just circumvent the passenger seat sensor, and have the airbag deploy in an accident whether or not there's anyone in the passenger seat. That's a far better option than having it deactivated whether or not there's a passenger in the car! but Mini of the woodlands told me that there's no way they can do that.

Failure Date: 04/15/2015

The failure mileage was 58,000.

27 Warning Light On problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 01/12/2015

Air bag failure warning light comes on and stays on. BMW-Mini has recalls for model years up to 2008, but refuses to acknowledge problem exists on 2009 and newer cars (some 2009's were built in 2008, in the affected recall time frame, but because they were designated 2009, these cars have been ignored).

28 Warning Light On problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 10/20/2014

Passenger seat airbag warning light illuminated and remains on. Inspection is due 5/31/2015 so I had it diagnosed by Mini dealer. Diagnosis was a fault in the sensor system in a module located in the dashboard, behind the glove box - repair cost, $2,000+. They said they had never before experienced a failure in this part. To my understanding, this is not related to the recall in process, which has to do with the sensor in the seat itself (which I have already replaced, December 2012. ).

29 Warning Light On problem of the 2007 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 10/16/2014

My 2007 Mini passenger air bag warning light came on and I had to have the seat replaced by the dealer due to weight sensor failure in the passenger seat. It was a defective faulty passenger seat weight harness sensor failure according to the dealer. The whole seat had to be replaced as a result of the defect. I now see that nhsta/BMW is recalling Mini Coopers for the same problem but according to the dealer and the customer service hot line rep my Mini is not on the recall list. It should be. I have note many Mini owner complaints of the same problem and year as my car on line. The car rarely has a passenger in the passenger seat and the safety air bag harness should not of failed at such a low mileage usage. The recall notice as presented in auto blog follows. Mini is recalling 91,800 hatchbacks and convertibles due a potentially malfunctioning sensor that may fail to deploy the front passenger airbag in the event of a crash.

The failure mileage was 50,000.

31 Warning Light On problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 10/01/2014

The contact owns a 2006 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that the passenger side seat belt warning light and the air bag disabled light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. In April 2015, the recall notice for NHTSA campaign number: 15v205000 (air bags) was received. After contacting the dealer and the manufacturer on multiple occasions, the contact was informed that the parts needed to repair the vehicle were still not available and no estimated time for receiving the parts could be given. The failure mileage was 100,000.

32 Warning Light On problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 08/26/2014

Air bag warning light (passenger side) on the dashboard came on intermittently at first and now stays on all of the time, regardless if someone is sitting in the passenger seat or not. Took the vehicle to the local Mini dealer (International autos, milwaukee, WI) and was told that that there was a "faulted air bag oc3 mat" that could be repaired/replaced for $1163. 00. As this was an obvious safety issue unrelated to the age or accumulated mileage on the vehicle, I felt that Mini USA should authorize a no-cost repair or, at a Minimum, provide a replacement part(s) at no cost. The cost to remedy other wear-related issues noted during the inspection of the vehicle are clearly my responsibility. A subsequent phone conversation with Mini USA on 01/27/2015 disclosed that, while this was an legitimate vehicle safety issue, they did not feel that this was their responsibility and that I should pay the entire amount necessary to repair this vehicle defect.
