Mini Cooper owners have reported 68 problems related to warning light on (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mini Cooper based on all problems reported for the Cooper.
Passenger side head air bag warning light on and cannot be reset. This is a safety issue, but the dealership (where I purchased the car new) will not warranty or refer to manufacturer, but will charge over $1,200. 00 to replace the airbag and/or sensor not knowing if it is actually defective. The car (not even six years old with less than 47k miles) should not have this potentially serious safety problem. Other recalls for air bags have not included my vehicle make/model. . . Yet.

Air bag warning light came on! passenger light turns off and on with passenger in seat. Passenger warning light goes off with out passenger in seat. I looked on several internet forms and this seams to be a problem that Mini has had for some time without a recall. The fix for most problems is an expensive 1200. 0 to 1400. 00 seat sensor . I fill that this is a serious safety concern which Mini should address .

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Mini Cooper s. The contact stated that the passenger side air bag warning light continusuoly illuminated. The vehicle had not been taken to the dealer and had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had not been notified. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000. Sw.
The BMW Mini Cooper 2006 has the same safety problem as described in the NHTSA action number : ea08001, NHTSA recall campaign number : 08v384000 but was not included in the vehicle recall list. There are many many owners having to pay $1000 - $2000 for repairs concerning defects to the front passenger seat air bag occupant detection mat. The broken circuit can lead to the deactivation of the passenger air bag and the illumination of both the air bag warning light and the passenger air light. The repair of the detection mat forces the replacement of the passenger seat. My vehicle is now one of the increasingly large number of Mini Coopers with the failed safety system. Many states have yearly safety inspections and the airbag safety situation needs to be corrected before the inspection passes. The Mini Cooper "r" series vehicles need to be added into the ea08-001 NHTSA recall 08v384000.
The airbag warning light came on. The sensor under the passenger seat was broken. This is a very well known problem with Mini's beginning with the 2002 model, but especially with the 2006. BMW which owns Mini had the same problem with the same year car and issued a recall, but Mini never did. The dealer wants $1500 to fix the problem, but others with the same car have had the part break as many as three times. The sensor is to detect that there is a passenger and the weight of the passenger so that the force of the airbag can be regulated if a child or child car seat is in the passenger seat. It is unscionable that Mini would jeopardize safety after they have known of this problem for years. Customer relations at Mini USA was unwilling to resolve this issue.
The airbag warning light is on and dealer has said the sensor in the passenger seat is bad and the pad and sensor must be replaced at a cost of $1400. I cannot believe that a car this popular has this kind of safety issue. I would expect Mini to at the very least to cover the cost of the pad or sensor. Unbelievable.
Tl - the contact owns a 2006 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that the front passenger side air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the front passenger seat air bag sensor needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 65,000. Kmj.
2009 Mini Cooper air bag control unit on June 19th, 2013, at @ 54,200 miles, the air bag warning lights illuminated on the tachometer gauge and center speedometer gauge and an overhead light warned that "passenger airbag is off". On August 26, 2013, at 61,396 miles, the morristown, NJ Mini Cooper dealership charged me $140 for the diagnoses of this issue. Indicated on receipt that "mrs module has an internal fault. . . . . Fault code 93d7 internal control unit fault. . . . Air bag control unit will need to be replaced and programmed. . . . Parts and labor costs $1100. " service department informed me that part was out of warranty. Research shows that this is an ongoing problem and that earlier model years have had corrective actions provided at no expense to the consumer. Needs to be extended to the 2009 model year.

My car is a 07/2006 Mini Cooper with only 22,900 miles as of 06/2013. When someone is seated in the passenger seat, the passenger airbag warning light and the passenger airbag disabled light are intermittently illuminated. The Mini dealership said that the fault codes indicate an issue with the passenger seat occupancy sensor--which should be replaced. The cost cited for that operation was $900. The dealership speculated that, despite the indicator lights, the passenger airbag should still deploy if the passenger was wearing his seat belt. However, when BMW, manufacturer of Mini, announced a recall in north America of front passenger air bag seat sensor mats involving approximately 200,000 model year 2004-06 bmws, affected owners were warned that they should contact their dealer "if the air bag warning lamp and the passenger air bag 'on-off' lamp are illuminated simultaneously. " in that situation, BMW recommended that customers not use the front passenger seat and have the vehicle serviced immediately, warning that "a possible defect may keep the front passenger airbag from opening in a crash. " thus, it seems evident that faulty seat occupancy sensors should be regarded as a significant safety issue. Yet, despite the fact that there are numerous, well documented problems with the sensors in the Mini, BMW has neither extended the warranty to financially compensate owners for an obvious manufacturer defect, nor issued a recall. The NHTSA should compel BMW to ensure the safety of Mini passengers.
The contact owns a 2006 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local mechanic who performed a diagnostic which located a failure code at the front passenger seat sensor. The passenger front seat needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 89,200.
The air bag warning light came on. We contacted the dealer where we purchased the car and they said there was nothing they could do because it was not under warranty and there was no recall. They had repaired this previously under warranty. We then contacted Mini USA and they said our VIN# was not listed for a recall. I mentioned there are Mini Coopers in forums all over the internet with airbag light issues.
The air bag warning light came on for the passenger side seat. The BMW dealer said that the seat senser was faulty.
Passenger seat air bag sensor warning light is lighting up. This has been diagnosed as a result of a defective passenger seat air bag sensor. There was no incident that caused this. It just went bad. This appears to be a known issue for min and BMW but they are not taking responsibility to replace the sensor which runs anywhere from $900 to $1600 to be repaired. This automobile has been very well maintained has less than 60k miles and is a one owner. There was no reason for this to have gone bad other than the part must be of poor quality or design. This is a safety issue and Mini USA should step up and resolve this for their customers.
Airbag warning light indicates system is either off or inoperative - it does not matter if someone is sitting on the passenger seat or not. The airbag light is always on. After reviewing numerous complaints on Mini forums, it appears that the problem is common and due to a defective sensor under the seat cover. Since I rarely carry passengers, this condition is definitely not due to wear and tear. As it stands, I have no way to ascertain if the air bag will deploy in an accident situation. This could cause serious injury to anyone riding in the passenger seat or even the driver. A low mileage vehicle or even an older vehicle should not have this type of safety issue. Mini customer support offered no help due to car being out of warranty. Independent shop is doing the repair for $1210. 00 due to lack of confidence in Mini.
The passenger airbag warning light indicates there is a problem with the passenger airbag system. The light illuminates contunuously whether a passenger is in the seat or not indicating that the airbag is turned off for the passenger. Mini Cooper denies any problem with their safety airbag system, yet there are many people complaining about having the same issues. The problem occured shortly after the warranty ran out.
The airbag warning lights came on and stayed on. At first the lights were coming on and off now they just stay on. No incidents on a well maintained vehicle. Both a Mini dealership and another mechanic both say it is the air bag weight sensor in the seat and that the seat needs to be replaced.
The srs light is on and the passenger airbag light is also on even with a passenger sitting in the seat. This is a known issue due to bad wiring harness under the seats but BMW, Mini is refusing to rectify the faulty problems for 2005 and 2006 models of the 1st generation Mini Cooper. 2004 and 2003 Mini Coopers were honored with an extended warranty on the srs system for 150k miles or 10 years. With the srs light on, the airbag system and the seat belt activation system may fail on the passenger side even with a passenger in the car. The problem has already been reported with a service bulletin. The airbag warning light is on with a fault stored. The wiring under the seat may be pinched or damaged. Service bulletin number:sim-65-06-11 NHTSA item number:10039593.
Ever since buying this car used in January of 2012, the srs warning light has been on. The car store we bought the vehicle from did cancel the code when we discovered it was on after purchase. However, the code came back. We brought it to be fixed, and I believe someone eliminated the coupler under the passenger seat, wiring the seat to the ecu directly, by crimping wires together. Still, the light came back on. It has been on constantly for over a year now. I have soldered the wires under the passenger seat together, as one connection seemed broken, hoping this would eliminate the light. I bought a code reader to reset the light, but the codes only temporarily disappear and after blinking a few times the light is back on. I do not know, nor do I have confidence in knowing, whether or not the air bag would deploy in case of an accident. I hope never to find out, of course. But I do know that the air bag light being on is a consistent and persistent problem with Mini Coopers built from 2002 - 2006. And I know that there has been no recall, nor an extended warranty that would cover work that apparently will cost around $2,000 at a dealer repair shop. With the recent recall of air bags made by japanese air bag maker takata, including thousands of bmws made in a similar time frame as the air bags in my Mini Cooper, I am also wondering if the Mini air bags are made by takata, and sensibly worry about their safety should the in fact deploy as designed. BMW has recalled some of their own cars for air bag light issues, involving seat sensors, but not on the Mini, even though both cars use identical components. It is time for BMW to take ownership of a serious problem the air bag systems in their early Mini Coopers. I would hope that you can force the issue, as this certainly is a safety issue which exists/persists on thousands of vehicles sold in the us.

Recently, I've been getting both the yellow overhead airbag off light (above the rearview mirror) and the red warning light on the center dash. The warning lights will go off occasionally, but always seem to return. It does not matter whether I am carrying a passenger or not. The problem appears to be a defective seat sensor or a defect in airbag wiring harness. Since this is a safety issue, I do not want to work on the system myself. Mini websites discuss similar problems with the airbag lights on earlier model Minis. I am certain a recall was issued for '02-'03 models. Current recall does not include later build years such as my '06, but again, this is definitely a safety issue and should be addressed by the manufacturer.
The passenger airbag warning light on this 2005 Mini Cooper stays on and won't go off. Dealer advised on 8/19/2011 that this would cost $1229. 88 to replace the seat mat sensor but told owner that the airbag was working, it was just the sensor/light that didn't work. Many, many complaint about this exact issue with the 2005 Mini models are on the internet. Dealers refuse to correct the problem. Since the light is on and the repair is expensive, passengers take a risk that the airbag won't work at all.
The contact owns a 2006 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that the air bag warning light illuminated intermittently. The dealer advised the contact that it could possibly be the air bag sensor that was faulty. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure however, did not offer any assistance. No repairs were performed. The current mileage was 60,000 and the approximate failure mileage was 58,000.
The contact owns a 2006 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that the passenger side air bag warning light was continuously illuminated. The contact stated that the sensor had failed. The manufacturer and dealer were contacted in regards to the failure but the vehicle was neither inspected nor repaired. The failure mileage was 71,000 and the current mileage was 71,800.
Passenger seat airbag warning light won't go off. I do not know if the airbags will work in a accident.
Passenger seat air bag detector is faulty. When no one is sitting on the seat, the airbag light illuminates. This was replaced by the dealer at 44300 miles. The warning light has come on once again at 67000 miles and has stayed on.
The contact owns a 2008 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that the air bag warning light sporadically illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing where the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 26,000.
Passenger airbag light off comes on and off regularly, have repeatedly reported problem to dealer. Was in car accident, front on collision over 30 mph, neither airbag deployed. New warning came on stating problems with airbag system, dealer said there was no problem. Warning lights keep coming on, have reported problem to dealer, waiting on replacement part.

Beginning in approximately April of 2009, the airbag warning light has been on constantly. Anyone who is intelligent enough to use any internet search engine can find hundreds of accounts of the same issue. Due to what has been independently verified as a wiring problem in the seat sensors, the airbag warning light is always on and can cause the car to deploy with improper force. This is a widely known issue with Mini owners, and several independent mechanics have all attributed the problem to a wiring harness underneath the seat that breaks due to moving the seat back and forth. Unless I'm missing pages from the manual, moving the seat back and forth is a normal function, and it should not be considered normal wear and tear if simply moving the seat back and forth can render the airbag sensor useless. Mini acknowledged this issue in 2006, and stated “in the interest of customer satisfaction, we are extending the warranty coverage of the vehicle for defects that may occur, for this specific air bag warning lamp issue, on your vehicle for 10 years / 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Under terms of this warranty coverage, Mini will cover all necessary repair costs related to this action. €
I have been told three times by Mini that this does not apply to my car. They cannot provide any information as to why it does not apply. They just tell me that my car is not eligible for this repair despite the fact that it clearly fits the bill. This is a major safety issue. The wiring is clearly defective, and nobody should have to pay out of pocket to have a defect corrected. Mini won't even pay to have a technician diagnose the issue.

The contact owns a 2002 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that the air bag warning light was illuminated and the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. The dealer was unable to diagnose the failure and the vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was then taken to a local repair shop where the air bag light was reset. The failure recurred within 28 miles of driving. The contact was informed that because the light was illuminated, the air bags would not function in the event of a crash. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000 and the current mileage was approximately 69,000.
The air bag system warning light has been on 8 times in 3 years of ownership. (the incident date I report below is simply the most recent occurence) each time requires a trip to the dealer to reset the system. When the warning light is on the vehicle's airbag system is DE-ctivated, and therefore the system reset is an urgent safety issue. Over the course of 3 years, the dealer has replaced numerous sensors, wiring harness pieces, and several of the airbag units (esp. The seat airbags). This is reported to be one of the most common Mini Cooper failures and has plagued these cars for all model years in production. This is an urgent safety defect and it is important that the nhsta take action! (sorry I don't know my VIN by memory and can't access my registration at the moment. . . If you really need this, simply email me and I'll gladly provide).
After starting the vehicle air bag warning light illuminated. The dealership was notifed, but did not resolve the problem.
I have a 2002 Mini Cooper, I purchased new. I have had an ongoing problem since it was under warranty. My air bag warning light comes on. I have had it back to the dealer at least 20+ times for the same problem. They still can not seem to get a permanent fix for this(next appointment July 9, 2009).
