1 Brake Light On problem of the 2018 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 04/15/2020

I leased a 2018 Nissan Altima (from Nissan) on 3/24/18. Approx 12k miles into leasing the vehicle I had a brake light switch/brake lamp switch (brake switch) go bad. The vehicle is a push to start vehicle and the brake switch is a senor above the brake that when you press on the brake, it tells the vehicle that your pressing the brake to start the vehicle. The part was back ordered so Nissan as a whole had zero brake switches to replace my bad one. I explained to the Nissan service rep that im in the military and I need my vehicle to drive me to different duty locations and also I have court ordered custody in which I have to drive 424 miles to go see my daughter and that particular weekend I needed my vehicle to drive to see her. The rep advised me that he would take one from a new vehicle and place it into mines so I could go see my daughter. Because he did that, the maintenance was undocumented. At 21,254k miles the part failed again. Causing my vehicle not to start (it was start randomly). When it did start, I was not able to shift my vehicle out of park or sometimes if I did get it into park, I couldnt shift it from drive or reverse, causing a major safety concern. Also while driving the cars anti-collision braking system, which was incorporated with the switch, would suddenly cause my vehicle to brake (even while driving 70mph on the highway). Sometimes the vehicle wouldn't go over 30mph. I was able to get that fixed under warranty. The part failed again at 62,155k miles and at 129,025k miles. The last time the part failed I asked the Nissan service rep if there anything Nissan can do because I cant keep paying for this part to keep failing. I need my vehicle to see my daughter and to travel for the military. He advised me to call the Nissan corporate, I called and they started a case but the next day I was advised that they couldn't do anything.

3 Brake Light On problem of the 2018 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 01/22/2020

The car will not start using push to start with the brake pedal depressed. The car is an automatic and the problem is due to a faulty stop light switch. The safety concern is that the brake lights are not functioning correctly and is a safety concern. This seems to be a common problem and the car is less than 2 years old.

4 Brake Light On problem of the 2018 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 01/12/2020

The vehicle is frequently not recognizing that the brake is depressed. The brakes work fine but with the car not recognizing the brake is depressed, it will not start (as it is a push button start and the brake needs to be depressed for the car to start). Also because of it not recognizing that the brake is depressed, it occasionally will not shift out of park. Additionally because the vehicle does not recognize that the brake is depressed, the brake lights do not work which is a huge safety issue as other vehicles do not know that the car is braking. It happens when the vehicle is stationary as well as when it is being driven both at low speeds and highway speeds. The brake light sensor I believe is to blame for all of the above issues. Apparently it is fairly common with Nissan Altimas and other Nissan vehicles as well. There should be a recall on that part as it creates unsafe conditions. The car is less than 2 years old and has 34,000 miles on it. I tried to schedule an appointment with my dealership where the car was purchased new but their first available appointment is 6-8 weeks away. I am bringing it into another repair facility tomorrow as it needs to be fixed urgently and cannot wait months.

5 Brake Light On problem of the 2010 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 07/27/2019

The brake light switch has failed on our 2010 Altima 2. 5. This is a known problem with Nissans and is in fact the subject of a Nissan service bulletin, number ntb10-139. The defective original Nissan switch causes a no start situation if it occurs when the car is not running, and failure of the brake lights to light when braking if it occurs while driving. Nissan has released a revised switch to replace the defective original design, but in reviewing transportation. Gov and contacting the dealer, there is no recall or manufacturer voluntary campaign to remedy this dangerous defect. We are in the process of completing the repair at our own expense and my initiate legal action against Nissan USA if there is not already a class action lawsuit.

6 Brake Light On problem of the 2015 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 06/21/2019

July 2018: brake light switch had intermittent failures - once the brake pedal was engaged, it would not disengage. The problem was intermittent over a month-long period. Once the problem occurred, the car would only use neutral gear. (detailed description attached) happened on the highway at 50+ mph as well as from stop signs, stop & go traffic. July 2019: brake light switch had intermittent failures - the car would not start even though the brake pedal was engaged; the car's electronics did not recognize that the brake pedal was engaged.

7 Brake Light On problem of the 2013 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 11/15/2018

Three major issues has been occuring with my 2013 Nissan Altima 2. 5 sl 1. Brake light comes up randomly while driving at local or highway speed. 2. Hood pop up while driving - issue with latch 3. Transmission is making grinding noise.

8 Brake Light On problem of the 2014 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 05/01/2018

The double safety feature of pressing the break to start the car becomes void when the caliper has an issue even without the brake light engaging to show an issue. The car is tricked into thinking that the break is being pressed and will allow you to start it with just pressing the start button. My 8yr old was in the car playing while I was cleaning it and was also able to put the car in gear due to the mechanical system reading that the break was engaged. The car also continues to run after the key is removed and you can drive off with no key in the car. I.

9 Brake Light On problem of the 2010 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 09/10/2017

On 9/10/17 about noon while driving on the highway, the brake light on the dash board came on, pulled to the side of the road. While looking for service phone number, smelled something burning, exited the car, and almost immediately the engine compartment and then the car was engulfed in flames.

10 Brake Light On problem of the 2013 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 04/01/2017

The dashboard brake warning light keeps coming on when driving & remains on until car is turned off and then restarted. It has occurred multiple times whether slowing (foot on brake), going up or downhill, driving on freeway, or after stopping for a light. Has happened multiple times starting when car was 3 months old. Nissan dealer says computer analysis shows incident occurs but computer doesn't show why.

11 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 01/09/2017

My brake switch went out in September. At any given time my car wouldn't start. When I press the brake peddle my brake light wouldn't come on. This happened over and over again. This is very dangerous because someone could run into the back of the car at any given time. I travel up and down the road a good bit. Having this problem is very dangerous for me. Now, a few months my car want start again. The dealership thinks its the steering column this time. My car don't even have 70,000 miles on it. This doesn't make since to me. I've been told by several people that Nissan is aware of this problem. I've been told that the problem exist in most all 2009 Altima's. Why would Nissan risk the well being of their customers. It's sad that when I give them the year and make of my car they know exactly what the problem is without even checking them out. There should be a recall on these parts. These parts. Why is Nissan willing to cheat their customers and why are they willing to put our lives as well as the lives of other drivers at risk.

12 Brake Light On problem of the 2013 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 12/02/2015

Purchased car may of 2013, pre-owned certified and only 21000miles. From onset of ownership, brakes made noises, "cyclop brake light in rear window would blink constantly, dash lights would go from dim to bright all the time. The car would hesitate when leaving stop position, pushing electronic start button would not work often. Dealership always said that the situation could not be duplicated. On Dec. 2nd, 2015 while driving home I was approaching a stopped car in the middle of the road and tried to slow below the 20mph I was driving and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor and all dash lights went blank and the car stalled resulting in a collision. The car would not start for over 2 hours. The dealership asked about the key fob location and battery condition and the batteries were good and key fob was on front seat where it always was. I filed a customer complaint with Nissan consumer affairs on Dec, 4th 2015 and constantly got run-arounds with no call backs several time. I was left without a vehicle and no help from dealership or Nissan consumer affairs. While reading the many complaints of other Altima's I was so concerned with my safety and health I purchased another car. I believe I had an electrical issue from the beginning and it could not be diagnosed and it ended up with a collision involving another car.

13 Brake Light On problem of the 2010 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 08/02/2015

The contact owns a 2010 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start on several occasions and the abs and vdc warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle restarted after the vehicle was jumpstarted; however, the failure recurred on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake light switch was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 67,000.

14 Brake Light On problem of the 2010 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 06/01/2015

I have a 2010 Altima that has the same safety problem as has been reported on this web site and many other automotive complaint web sites many, many times (not only for this Nissan product but various Nissan products of earlier years). Namely, the switch that operates the brake lights fails intermittently. When it fails the brake lights won't illuminate when the driver steps on the brake. This is a rear end collision waiting to happen! does the NHTSA have to wait until someone is killed before requiring a manufacturer to fix a defect that both the manufacturer and NHTSA knew about for several years? to make matters worse, when the switch fails the anti-lock braking and traction control systems are disabled posing an additional safety risk. To make matter worse, when the switch fails the car won't start. Would you like to be stuck in a dark, deserted area at 2 o'clock in the morning when your car decided not to start? as I said before, the manufacturer has known about this problem for years. In response to the deluge of customer complaints, in November of 2010 Nissan acknowledged the defect by issuing a TSB (ntb10-139) to fix the problem. It involves a different stop lamp switch and a new electrical harness. The cost to implement the TSB is borne by the customer. My dealer wants $579 to do this! in response to an overwhelming number of complaints about a serious safety issue it is time for the NHTSA to act before someone gets killed. Nissan should be required to implement TSB ntb10-139 in all Nissan products that contain the defective brake light switch at no cost to the customer.

15 Brake Light On problem of the 2013 Nissan Altima

16 Brake Light On problem of the 2010 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 11/03/2014

I was driving down a residential road and my stability control turned off on its own and I could not turn it back on. At the time that it turned off my parking brake light came on, eventually it turned off but flashed on two more times as I was driving up hill. I was never able to turn the vdc (electronic stability control) back on.

17 Brake Light On problem of the 2010 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 10/29/2014

My brake light came on and I topped it off with oil and it went home. This was on Sunday. I took it in Monday to have it checked and the master cylinder was leaking and I had it replaced for $612. 73. I called Nissan as I found there were some complaints and found a site where Nissan was reimbursing customers. They checked my VIN number and told me my car was not eligible. This is too new of a car with hardly any miles on it. Now they say my front struts need replacing. I never had to replace struts on my old Mazda until it had very high mileage on it. I am not pleased.

18 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 08/06/2014

Have had several issues with my 2009 Nissan Altima. I bought it November 2012. By February 2013, I replaced tires. Was sold a car with incorrect license plates that owed registration fees to dmv. I almost got towed and didn't know why. Between February and November 2013, I replaced brakes, another set of tires, third brake light twice, and battery. May 2014, took it to rogers & rogers dealership for an oil change. Maintenance other light and tires on. (car was bought with a flashing tire maintenance light on) mounts and struts were replaced and was advised to replace sensors. August 2014, car wouldn't start again. Steering lock unit needs to be replaced. It's not covered under extended warranty. Rear left window doesn't work either. Everything adds up to over $3000.

19 Brake Light On problem of the 2010 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 02/19/2014

Most of the 2010 Nissan Altima cars do have a push button for the ignition to start. In order to start the car's engine, the driver would need to lightly press the brakes before pressing the button. I purchased the brand-new car back in September 2010 and I am still the only owner. In February 2014 with approximately 38,000 miles, the ignition started to stop working. After a few struggles, the ignition button would finally allow me to start the engine. Then the problem gradually got worse. I noticed that the brakes would suck in so hard that I would be unable to "press" the brakes anymore in order for the ignition button to "enable" so I can start the engine. At one point last week, the car refused to start because of the brakes and I was unable to do anything but to put the car in neutral and push the car back and forth in the middle of a mcdonald's drive-thru route in baltimore, MD. My roommate had to take leave in order to come and help me out. After 2 hours of struggling, we were able to get the "brakes light" on and the ignition would finally become enabled and we were able to start the engine. We drove straight to the Nissan dealership in bowie, MD and told them what happened. Nissan about this and they acknowledged that this is a common problem among many drivers and that the "brake switch" is causing it. At the end, my warranty company had to pay more than $800 and I had to pay almost $300 out of my pocket just for this issue. I researched online and saw so many drivers are complaining the same thing and that Nissan is refusing to issue a recall for this because they knew it is a "common problem" that they could make a profit out of the repairs charges. Many drivers had to pay approimately $1,000 just for this "common issue" and I would like to make sure that NHTSA & dot are aware of this ongoing issue. Thank you.

20 Brake Light On problem of the 2013 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

The contact owns a 2013 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph, the traction control warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the brake lights needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. 21 Brake Light On problem of the 2008 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 12/17/2013

The switch that allows the car to start and lights the brake lights is sticking, this is a common problem that Nissan is aware of. The car not starting is annoying, if the switch sticks after the car is started then the brake lights will fail to illuminate, that is dangerous. The car fails to start with regularity, if the switch is manipulated it starts, I do not know if the break lights are failing but I assume this is occurring. These cars should be recalled for replacement of these switches.

22 Brake Light On problem of the 2011 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 11/27/2013

2011 Nissan Altima. Consumer writes in regards to braking system service bulletin. However, in November 2013, the vehicle began to display some of the identifying problems associated with the service campaign. The brake warning light and traction control warning light illuminated. Also, the brakes were squeaking and occasionally made a grinding noise. The dealer inspected the vehicle and validated his complaint and they replaced the master cylinder in accordance with the service bulletin. However, when the consumer left the dealer, the brakes continued to squeak. The consumer took the vehicle to another dealer, for its 45,000 recommended service. He asked the dealer to check the brakes, as they were still grinding and squeaking. An inspection revealed the front brakes were worn to a level of 2mm, which explained the squeaking and grinding. When you try to start vehicle you push on brake pedal, but the pedal doesn't go down 1/16 of an inch. The brake lights wont even come on. 26 Brake Light On problem of the 2008 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 04/10/2013

In December of 2012 my car started to give me problems with starting. (45000 miles)I push the brake and push to start button, but only the lights come on. I had it towed to the dealer, and they said it is a brake switch problems, and that others have come in with the same problem on the 2007 and 2008 Altima. They fix the problem for $268 which was a complete waste of money, because in April 2013 and the same problem happening again. (48000 miles) I had the car towed back to the dealer and they replace the brake switch for me for free this time, and said that it maybe a bigger problem such as the sub harness for the brake light switch. But I will have to pay $125 for the diagnosis charge and I told them to call the corporate office have the Altimas recalled and some other "kind words". I read online from various posts that others alitmas 2007 and 2008 are having this problem. So for now I am left to pay to fix the problem out my pocket which is a complete headache, because Nissan should be fully aware of this problem.

27 Brake Light On problem of the 2013 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 04/05/2013

The brake light comes on randomly and stays on until the vehicle is turned off; the brake pedal has a "hitch" in it when letting up on it (as does the gas pedal); you can hear gas sloshing around in the gas tank. Piece of crap car.

28 Brake Light On problem of the 2013 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

After a few weeks of owning this new car, the brake light came on and stayed onwhile I was driving. I started hearing squelling and thunking coming from my brakes. These are new and on a new car, the car just now has 6000 miles on it and it still should not makes these sounds. I took it in they did something to clear the brake light and said the noises are normal. This should not be making all of these different noises. Nissan needs to find the problems of their cars and fix them! I feel like there is something still wrong but the dealership does not want to look any further.

29 Brake Light On problem of the 2013 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 02/18/2013

I spoke to 5 town Nissan who did a so called thorough check on my car stated that everything was perfect but the brake light went on. How can everything be perfect with the brake light going on. All I see is that these dealers say its good and cars are in perfect working condition when they are not.

31 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 02/08/2013

Brake warning light comes on and off while driving. Some loss of brake fluid with no apparent leaks. Suspect master cylinder leaking into vacuum booster, just as many other Altima owners are experiencing. Vehicle is out of warranty now, and I don't want to buy another master cylinder out-of-pocket from Nissan since I have read on the net where others have had replacement unit failures (such as NHTSA action number pe11020). What am I to do? Nissan should pay for a permanent repair for this obvious product defect!.

On multiple occasions the dashboard brake warning light is turning on. This usually happens when getting off the freeway. I checked the master cylinder and the fluid level was iow so I added dot 4 brake fluid. This car is regularly serviced every 5000 miles and the dealer at mossy Nissan oceanside, CA, did not mention the issue at 55000 miles.
