2 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2017

Sudden total transmission failure at 45,699 miles on Maxima 2005. Put car in reverse, backed out put in drive it stalled out. Car did not want to start, I was in middle of street. Car has never ever given me issues prior. Sudden "service engine" light, (never illuminated before. Put accelerator to floor to start then car would barely move forward, it had no 1, 2nd gears. Drove it out of middle of street. Took forever to get to 20mph. Parked car, started easier in the morning but made horrible clunk when put in reverse. It is now at repair shop and not sure of full diagnosis yet but told will probably bee a full transmission rebuild.

3 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/21/2016

My transmission just failed for the second time after being replaced the first time by Nissan as it was under warranty. It was regularly flushed/ serviced. There is a major issue with the transmission itself and Nissan must do something about it.

4 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2014

5 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2014

After coming to a stop the car does not want to accelerate. Going from 1st to 2nd is the biggest challenge but the car is not shifting well into any gear. The transmission already failed at 48,000 miles and was replaced under warranty. It is sad to know that Nissan would not correct the true problem, simply mask it for the time being and put a single mother right back into the same difficult situation. This is my only means of transportation. 2 out of the 4 cars that I have owned have been Nissan's. I purchased this car for reliability. Sure, problems will come about with any car over 100,000 miles, but you don't expect the transmission to go out on your Nissan. Nissan needs to correct the problem with these prematurly failing transmissions!.

6 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

2005 Nissan Maxima transmission is failing prematurely. Thousands of other complaints similar to mine online. Hard knock when shifting from 1st to 2nd, then delay in transmission "catching" 4th gear (loss of power). If acceleration is needed at that point to avoid an accident, it would not be available. Also, immediate loss of transmission is a safety concern in all cases. According to online reports, these are not isolated incidents and there should be an immediate recall to replace the transmissions in these vehicles.

7 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2013

The valve body or valve assembly on the transmission is failing causing hard shift and high revs while shifting. Which is very hard and could cause the transmission to fail. It is well known by Nissan and they are no help at fixing this problem. New valve body is around $1100 without labor. If waited to long to replace, new transmission could cost $3400.

Transmission failure. Was replaced at my expense for 3000. 00 dollars and now March 9 , 2014 it has failed again. I suspect a factory defect. I am told that this is a common issue and reoccurs often with this model. Dealership or Nissan must replace at their own expense. Internet is full of personal testimony by thousands for the same problem. Nissan must accept responsibillity and issue a recall.

Transmission failed at 49000 miles on a new preowned vehichle purchashed one month earlier. Drove the car for almost one year to the date, and now experiencing transmission problems again. Dealer suggest new transmission. This will make three transmissions for a car with only 75000 miles. . . . . Not to mention two cracked engine mounts, front suspention work and needs a new timing belt all within 1 year of owning. This is supose to be a pre-certified car!!!.

18 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2011

At 72k my auto transmission is failing, jerking, bucking and slipping. Ive found a service bulletin about this issue and see literallly thousands of Maxima owners in the same boat, right around the same mileage. My car isnt in warranty and I will be going this weekend to have this problem confirmed. It appears there is a defect in this year car transmission, but Nissan will not "man up". I have read some complaints where customers have gotten Nissan to pay for their transmission repair. . Doesnt that indicate some "guilt"? I have no idea how I will replace my transmission, im a single parent, fighting to keep my house and help my daughter thru college. This needs an investigation and possible recall. I read one account where a womans transmission went out on a busy road and her 2 small children were in the car.

19 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2011

At 57,000 miles, transmission began shifting extremely hard (jerks) and erratically (cannot predict) when up shifting and down shifting between 1st and 3rd gears. Very nerve-racking to operate the vehicle whenever in slow moving or stop-n-go traffic. Had to maintain very large gap (wider than normal) with vehicles in front to avoid collisions. Paid Nissan dealership $3,300 for repair. Nissan does not attempt to repair the transmission, it is simply replaced with a "¿¿Nissan factory certified reconditioned" transmission, that only comes with a 1 year warranty. Not much of a warranty for a "¿¿certified reconditioned" transmission costing $3,300! powertrain had a 5 year/60,000 mile warranty, transmission failed at 57,000 miles, but vehicle was over 5 years old. The fact the Nissan dealership did not have to order the replacement transmission(had it in stock), tells me this is a very common issue and repair! the component that fails on thousands of vehicles is the transmission valve body. Countless blogs on internet about this very issue. Since 2006, the Nissan Maxima have cvt (no shift) transmission. The faulty transmission also caused damage to two out of the three motor mounts, which will cost another $800-$1,000 when repaired. Contacted the north american Nissan motor corporation, consumer affairs division in franklin tennessee hoping they would meet me "¿¿somewhere in the middle" to cover part of the repair expense. They told me that the car was out of warranty and they were not going to do anything or help me out. Everyone familiar with this issue knows the Nissan motor corporation has known about the inferior transmissions, but yet, failed to do anything for the consumer by way of a "¿¿factory recall. " I have been a long-time Nissan car owner, going back to the datsun years, and I can tell you this, this will be the last Nissan I will ever own!.

20 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 03/29/2011

My 2005 Nissan Maxima has never had any major problems. I bought it new. I do a lot of highway driving to and from work and have about 93,000 miles now on the car because of the long distances every day. The problem with the transmission has become more noticeable within the past couple months. The automatic transmission shifts very hard from 1st to 2nd and sometimes 3rd and back down and feels like a bucking bronco. Today the trans slipped completely while accelerating at least three times on my drive in to work and the rpm's went flying. It's never slipped completely until today. The transmission is failing and it should be lasting a lot longer than 5 years. Over the past 2-3 months the problem has gotten worse. Now it does the bucking bronco thing every day, several times a day. I have already taken the car in once (to a local transmission shop) and they tried a transmission flush that cost nearly $400. It seemed to help for a couple weeks but the problem is back and is much worse now. I am planning to take it in again but I'm being told that it may cost me $1,500 to $2,000 to replace the transmission. I have seen hundreds and hundreds of reports online for the same issue. This can't be a coincidence and something needs to be done by Nissan corporate right away!.

22 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/24/2010

Transmission fails to get out of 5th gear and have to start forward movement in 5th gear instead of 1st gear. Hard shifts very solid bump. Transmission was replaced about a year ago and now this one is acting the same way.

The contact owns 2005 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated that the transmission was failing and the vehicle would jerk when shifting from first to second gear. As a result, the motor mounts also failed. The transmission was flushed, but the failure continued. The failure mileage was 98,000 and the current mileage was 143,000.

25 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2010

Transmission on 2005 Nissan is not operating normally. This is an on-going problem and occurs when engine is warm. Transmission has a hard "clunk" going from 2nd to 3rd gear on acceleration. . . And from 4th to 3rd. . . 3rd to 2nd on deceleration. Transmission recently went into "safe" mode where it's always in 4th or 5th gear. Check engine light is intermittent. Car drives normally at highway speed, but on acceleration or deceleration the transmission could fail at any time, creating a dangerous driving situation. If you "google" Nissan Maxima transmission problems, thousands of postings on numerous blogs detail this exact problem. Nissan has known about these transmission failures for years. The cars usually experience the transmission 'issue' between 45/50 thousand miles and 70/75 thousand. Out of warranty. The Maxima transmission is not a component that can be easily repaired as I have had a transmission expert take it apart. Nissan puts a new (or rebuilt) transmission in. Cost is 2k-4k (or more). Is this a problem that has been reported before?.

26 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Maxima. While driving approximately 55 mph, the automatic transmission failed. The rpms suddenly increased rapidly when the contact shifted gears. The contact pulled over and turned the vehicle off; the transmission seemed to reset itself when the vehicle was restarted. The dealer stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. The contact called the manufacturer who referred him to the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000 and the current mileage was approximately 115,000.

27 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2009

The contact owns 2005 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated the transmission failed on for the second time. The contact had the transmission replaced in March of 2009 per the dealers recommendation yet the failure was recurring. The transmission would become stuck when shifting from second to third gear. The contact stated that the vehicle would also stall intermittently accompanied with a hard jerking sensation. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection or repairs. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 130,000.

28 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2008

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Maxima. The contact was driving approximately 40 mph on normal road conditions. Pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal, followed by an unintended lunge and forceful acceleration. The failure occurred whenever the vehicle was shifting in the first, second and third gears. The driver pulled over to the side of the road and turned the engine off. The vehicle restarted and resumed normal operation. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician recommended replacement of the transmission. The vehicle has not been repaired at this time. The failure mileage was 61,000. Updated 03/04/10. The consumer also complained that when accelerating, the transmission would jerk. The dealer found internal transmission failure. The transmission fluid was burned. Also the front and rear engine mounts were broken. The consumer had an accident due to the shifting problems with the transmission. 08/11/10.

29 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2004

I purchased a Nissan Maxima sl at the start of November 2004. A harness inside the engine containing a sensor to detect engine knocks was damaged by a rodent. This caused the engine to misfire which caused the transmission to buck, stop shifting, change speed of the car on it's own, lose acceleration, not shift, shift suddenly and put the driver in a situation where if they did not compensate they could be injured or killed. The problem started when I bought the car and worsened over the next three thousand miles of driving. The dealer and manufacturer ignored the problem and said they could not duplicate it until I said I would pay for them to plug the engine into a diagnostic computer. At this point they found a misfire code, the problem was identified my the master mechanic and the dealer replaced the harness at my expense! the manufacture refused to take responsibility for a dangerous defect. This is a defect in their computer logic and/or design. A sensor malfunction should not cause an engine misfire and transmission to fail. Note the date of November 3 2004 indicates that the problem started when I purchased the car and it continued until the harness was replaced. I have contacted the manufacturer many times and they are not returning my calls. The master mechanic said he has seen this problem many times before which tells me that this is perhaps a long standing problem that Nissan chooses to ignore.
