Taking off car jerks real bad between 1st & 2nd gear, then when I push down on gas sometimes it doesn't want to move. Slowing down car kicks & jerks when down shifting. Now it's at the point where the car stalls when switching gears. Putting the car from park to drive it hesitates about 5 to 7 sec and makes a loud sound when it jerks. Transmission slips out of gear under 20m. P. H. Causing engine to rev up to 4rpm and sometimes 5rpm. This issue is happening whether I in motion on a street or highway, stationary getting ready to put the car in gear, etc. I am really afraid that I am going to have an accident or something. 14 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2011

My 2005 Nissan Maxima has been having a transmission problem since it reached about 69,000 miles. Right now the main problem it does, is that in drive it jerks between 1st and 2nd shift. It also jerks pretty hard when downshifting from 2nd to 1st. When the problem was starting to begin, it only affected from shifting from reverse to drive, but has moved to the crazy jerking it does now. At about 71,000 miles I had the car taken to a dealership and they couldn't find anything from using a code reader, but from just some simple shifting out of gears (park to drive, park to rev) they recommended a trans oil change (about $250) which I denied, because I looked a the oil myself and it was still cherry red, so that was too much to spend to just "to see if that fixes the problem". So at about 79,000 miles when the hard jerking started getting bad, I took the car to a different dealership ,which then they did recognize the problem, and told me it would be about $4000 to replace the transmission, which stunned me, especially cause I had just finished paying off the car and the warranty had ended. So I obviously I denied such a costly repair, but in talking to the mechanic at the dealership , I told him that the jerking problem isn't so bad at all when I use the manual gearshifts and I asked him why. Well he told me that problem could also be in the valve body which could be a cheaper fix,but they replace whole transmission units not parts, because of warranty purposes, but that he's seen quite a few similar problems with other vehicles. Since I told him it was too much for me to spend he recommended a trans repair center. So when I took it there, they confirmed that just changing out the vavle body would be a "bandaid fix" and that a full replacement would be needed (about $3500 from them). Now in reading other stories from people with the same problem as mine.

17 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2011

Bought the car new. Serviced as outlined in owners manual. Transmission started having issues around 70,000 miles. I am in the military and with deployments, wasn't able to get it to a dealer. I have changed transmission fluid numerous times to try and aleviate symptons to no avail. The transmission has a 2-4 second delay going from p-d or d-p, shifts hard in most gears and slips out of gear randomly. Has almost caused me to be in an accident due to inability to accelerate. Have seen many, many post of owners that list the exact same deffects. Nissan has extended warranty for 2007-2010 Maximas with cvt transmission but not the 04-06 models for some reason.

18 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

The transmission violently shifts up and down causing the car to jerk forward at stoplights almost causing an accident, as well as slipping out of gear around 35-45 mph revving the engine then slamming into gear causing temporary loss of control, this is an extreme safety hazzard. There are many others having the same problem, it is a known 2004-2006 Nissan Maxima problem yet Nissan won't help, please help myself and other Nissan owners before someone dies in an accident from a surging/slipping transmission.

The failure progressively became worse and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where he was advised that the transmission would need replacing. 22 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2011

My 2005 Nissan Maxima had 53,000 miles when it started showing signs of transmission problems. When I start the car everything is fine, but after driving it for a bit this is what happens: takes about 5 seconds to click into gear after the shift lever is placed in "d" and when that happens the car jerks really hard. Same as the above happens when going from the reverse to drive and it takes again 4 to 5 seconds for the gear to engage and when that happens the car jerks violently. Transmission slips out of gear during regular driving causing the engine to rev freely then jerking back into gear with a loud clunk. That usually happens in lower rpms and got me and my family almost killed a couple of times because I lost control of the car. Sometimes I go for days with no symptoms at all and other times it may happen a dozen times in a day. I took it in to the dealer and the technician working on the car confirmed all of the above. They also found that the engine mounts were broken but that would not cause these symptoms. They suggested a new transmission and motor mounts for $4,700 and refused to help out with the repairs since I was out of warranty. After doing some research online I discovered that hundreds of people with the same make, model, and model year have the same issue. Nissan knows that there is an issue with the transmission but it doesn't make any sense to the fact that the they are not doing anything about it, but instead the jeopardize our lives in order to save some money.

Our 2005 Nissan Maxima is jerking when moving from a complete stop. Transmission shifts out of gear and "clunks" back into gear with a screech of tires. Also the transmission slips out of gear occasionally during regular driving allowing the engine to rev freely then jerking back into gear. This can cause sudden acceleration or torque steer. I'm very concerned that this car will cause an accident. The car now has a burnt oil type smell. (I know this is not good). I just had the transmission flushed and new fluid put in four months ago. We now have 70,000 miles on it.

32 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

My Nissan Maxima '05 has about 37000 miles. Recently, the transmission has gone bad. The car does not shift rapidly enough when I accelerate. Also, it has sometimes slipped out of gear at low speeds, causing it to lurch forward in bumper-to-bumper traffic! this is a major safety hazard.

33 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

My 2005 Nissan Maxima started having shifting problems when slowing. I would be coming to a stop sign and the transmission wouldn't jump out of gear and the car would free roll. Once stopped the car would jerk and try to take off while foot on brake. Now the transmission shifts very hard to the point to feels like im in an accident or the engine is coming through the hood. When I accelerate onto freeway from ramp im scared that I may get rear ended because the car just wont accelerate properly to get into lane safe. This occurs everyday particularly when car warms up and I then begin to smell electric burn or oil burn.

34 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

2005 Nissan Maxima transmission is shifting hard and slipping. It shifts hard between 1st & 2nd gear and between 2nd & 3rd. It slips out of gear between 2nd & 3rd and then slams into gear. This is an extreme saftey hazard. I have been told by a Nissan service consultant that the transmission needs to be replaced. So, I went for a second opinion. The indepenant transmission specialist told me this was common in the '04 & '05 and most llikely the valve body. He stated he was surprised it lasted this long. There are thousands of complaints of the exact same issue. Of those who chose to go to an indepent transmission shop all have replaced the valve body and had no further issues. I have contacted Nissan consumer affairs and I was told to take it to a Nissan service center.

35 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

This a complaint about the transmission of the 2005 Nissan Maxima. My Maxima only has 60,000 miles on it, however it has began to jerk while changing gears, and to slip out of gear while it is on the road. This is very dangerous, particularly the slipping out of gear. I have not yet gotten into an accident or had my car stop on the road. However, I feel that it is only a matter of time. Apparently this is a very widespread problem with the with the 2004 and 2005 Nissan Maximas. The problem first began to happen about every 3 days, but now it happens about every other day. Especially when the car is going from 2nd to 3rd gear. I have had the transmission fluid checked, and was told that my fluid level was perfectly fine. The shop recommended that I take my car to a transmission specialist, which I have not yet done. They also mentioned to me that the transmissions on the 2004 and 2005 Maximas are known to be defective, and usually go bad at about 60,000 or 70,000 miles. I believe that the transmissions on the 2004 and 2005 Nissan Maximas are defective and need to be recalled.
