1 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2004 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 10/31/2013

Ok my brother and I were driving on highway 85 and came to a stop because of traffic. I try to take off but my car just stalls. We were very fortunate to be in the left lane because if we were in the middle lane we would have been stuck in the middle of the highway and could have been in a real bad accident. We were still fortunate that no one hit us because my cars tail was still stuck out a lil because it would not move in neutral. I know its probably my transmission and torque converter but I just thank god that we were in the left lane and there was no accident.

5 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2004 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 05/24/2011

My 2004 Nissan Maxima failed to accelerate across a busy intersection due to a defective transmission. As a result I had a near miss with several trucks that nearly hit my family. The 2004 Nissan Maxima has a well known defect in its transmission valve body. This is published on the internet and discussed in transmission repair shops. My transmission was stuck in 5th gear forcing the car to use its torque converter clutch to slowly accelerate. I was nearly killed as a result. I have contacted Nissan previously about this defect but they have not responded. Please regulate Nissan to provide the NHTSA data about its Maxima transmission failure rate and force them to issue a safety bulletin and recall rebate. Thank you, capt. Curt taras, pe.

7 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2005 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 10/25/2010

The problem first appeared with hard, almost violent jerking when shifting gears. Not too long after that started, I was driving on the freeway when the transmission ceased and I had to limp it off to the side of the road and be towed. The transmission, torque converter and motor mounts had to be replaced. The motor mounts were broken from the hard shifting. It was out of warranty by six months. From the countless number of complaints that I have seen, Nissan equipped this model year (and 2004) with a defective transmission yet they will not take responsibility for the repairs by issuing a recall. Total cost to repair was $3,559.

8 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2006 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 05/05/2007

My 2006 Maxima has had a shifting problem since I purchased it with about 40,000 km. The shifts from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 1st are very harsh and erratic. The problem occurs mostly in stop and go or very low speed traffic (20 - 30 km/hr) high speed shifts are no problem. Took the vehicle to three different dealerships and no one could properly diagnose or repair the problem. Finally found an independent mechanic who suggested that the shift solenoids were not working properly, between the two of us we convinced a dealer to change out the transmission and torque converter for new components. However, while the problem got better, it did not disappear and is now getting just as bad as with the original transmission. Repeat visits to the dealer for further diagnosis did not result in anything wrong being found and they were unable to resolve the issue. Ultimately I was told that it was just the way the transmission operates and there is no fix. I really like the vehicle but this transmission issue makes me hesitant to buy another Nissan . . . . Even though they have changed their transmission design.

10 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 1998 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 03/11/2000

I own a 1998 Nissan Maxima se the transmission and the torque converter must have been defective from the manufacturer because when I purchased the car the reviews on the car had stated that the powertrain shifting was hard and rough. Since I had the car it has been doing just that . It shifts so hard sometimes from a stop that I feel that its not going to go into gear. Its not driven hard at all, so could someone look into this matter. My check engine light is on now from my torque converter circuit being intermittened. I would greatly appreciate it very much, thanks.
