2 Power Train problem of the 2017 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 07/22/2025

While driving on I-75 in atlanta about a month ago, my 2017 Nissan Maxima suddenly stopped accelerating. The engine was revving, but the car wouldn’t respond when I pressed the gas. It was unexpected and dangerous in fast-moving highway traffic. The same issue happened again on July 22, 2024, while I was driving on I-85. Both times, the car lost acceleration without warning in the moment. Before these incidents, I noticed occasional hesitation from a stop and delayed acceleration, but nothing as extreme as losing power at highway speeds. I took the car to a Nissan dealership, and they pulled a p17f1 code related to the cvt transmission. Nissan has acknowledged this issue by extending the warranty for transmission repairs in other models, but they told me my vehicle is not covered. This failure creates a serious safety risk and should not be ignored.

3 Power Train problem of the 2016 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 07/17/2025

The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the vehicle failed to accelerate properly. The vehicle was shifted into neutral, and the rpms revved up. The vehicle failed to move forward and shut off unintendedly. Several hours later, the vehicle was restarted. The vehicle was shaking abnormally while driving, with an unknown warning light illuminated. Additionally, the vehicle was shaking abnormally while the brake pedal was depressed. The abs warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to auto zone, where it was determined that the failure was a cvt failure. The contact called the local dealer, and a diagnostic test was advised. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

4 Power Train problem of the 2017 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 07/08/2025

Component failure: cvt transmission completely failed, requires full replacement. Failed unit available for inspection. Consistent with known manufacturing defect affecting multiple Nissan models, evidenced by $400+ million in class action settlements in the USA alone. Safety risks: sudden acceleration loss while driving, unpredictable lurching/jerking, complete loss of forward propulsion, risk of rear-end collisions, inability to safely merge or maintain highway speeds. Cvt failures occur suddenly without adequate warning. Dealer confirmation: younker Nissan in renton, wa confirmed complete cvt failure requiring replacement, estimated cost $8800. Manufacturer inspection: none. Nissan declined inspection citing mileage over 84,000-mile limit, despite known manufacturing defect and my vehicle falling within [xxx] v. Nissan settlement model years (2016-2018 Maxima). Warning symptoms: initial: shuddering and jerking while on highway. Within 1 hour: intermittent hesitation, jerking during acceleration, transmission shuddering, whining noises, slipping, intermittent check engine light within 2 days: more of the same, but worse. Completely stopped driving it. These match documented cvt failure patterns in Nissan settlements: hesitating, stalling, jerking, lurching, shaking, juddering, premature failure. Context: this systematic manufacturing defect acknowledged through multiple Nissan settlements totaling $400+ million in trhe USA alone. Failure at 106k miles well within expected transmission lifespan for properly maintained flagship sedan. Arbitrary 84k-mile settlement limits exclude well-maintained vehicles experiencing same inherent defect. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

5 Power Train problem of the 2016 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 07/03/2025

I had been trying to get the transmission changed on several occasions but was unsuccessful and was told to wait until 100,000 miles. So, I complied to suggestion. On 7/3/25 for a scheduled oil and transmission service, it was told that the transmission was throwing a p17f1 code and it would be best no to do anything with the transmission. So, at this point with no knowledge of what the code meant I refused the fluid change until I could get the understanding of what was happening. Researched code finding that this is a common problem that affect this make and model for this brand of vehicle. It's the means of transportation I have. How should I proceed?.

8 Power Train problem of the 2014 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 10/09/2024

While pulling into a parking space, I heard my engine racing. Immediately, I felt the car lurch forward. To avoid misapplying my foot to the gas pedal, I withdrew both my feet to the floor, next to the seat. The car continued forward at a fast rate. The car stopped going forward after it struck s building. However, the tires kept spinning, especially the front left tire. The engine ran briefly, until it stopped spontaneously. A few days previously, while driving at about 40 miles per hour on level ground, I felt the gas pedal to be unresponsive. Then it quickly reengaged. I mentioned this to my husband and he suggested that there may have been an air bubble in the fuel line. I don't know if the two events are related. Also, possibly related, I stopped using cruise control, because the car would surge and lapse during use. My insurance company is pursuing spontaneous acceleration. I visited my primary care physician the afternoon of the accident and was diagnosed with whiplash.

9 Power Train problem of the 2016 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 08/12/2024

This is third time this has happened. I already filled out one, but they have already replaced my altenator. My car worked fine for about a month, and then it did the same thing where I can't excelarate and the car limps at 1 mph till it eventually shuts off and will not start up. If you jump the car it will work again, but not for long until it does the same thing. On the Nissan forums alot of people are talking about this same issue, but nothing is being done and the only fix is to find an oem altenator, but Nissan doesn't make one anymore. This is really starting to become a huge problem.

12 Power Train problem of the 2011 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 06/27/2024

The transmission is slipping it’s a cvt and they’re known for being the worst transmissions. I was entering the highway on a on ramp and I could no longer accelerate past 55 I was near flooring it and you can hear the engine working but the rpm’s are all over the odometer going from 3k-6. 5k over and over. The problem has not been diagnosed professionally. The vehicle has not been inspected professionally. There were no lights on the dash when this began happening and nothing occurred that led up to that situation it was just a normal drive for me and now this happens every other day.

13 Power Train problem of the 2016 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 06/17/2024

Alternator loses power and car doesn’t accelerate. Vehicle shuts down and will not start after. When running diagnostics after everything shows fine and after a jump car works again and reads fine. Happens again after driving for 40+ mins.

14 Power Train problem of the 2017 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 04/03/2024

The system that failed on my Maxima sl 2017 was the cvt transmission. It was diagnosed by sutherlin dealer Nissan on 4/3/24 with the code dtc p17f1 cvt judder at the cost of $193. 83. My safety & others were put at risk when my car stop in the middle of an intersection not once but 4 times without a warning, not lights, not sounds etc. Just stop. I pressed the gas petal and the car moved slowly. After the diagnosis we were told the car may or may not stop again. We decided to look for another diagnosis & quote. On 4/10/24 the car left me stranded again crossing another intersection. Car was towed again to a certified Nissan transmission shop and left for repairs. A Nissan oem refurbished transmission was changed, and computer was reprogrammed at sutherlin Nissan as part of the fixing at a cost of $6,707. 49. On 4/29/24 car stop sudden again. Car was towed to the previous independent transmission shop and 4 days later they stated nothing was wrong because not code related to the transmission or anything else showed, but a new battery was placed. We pick up the car again from the independent repair shop on 5/3/24, in our trip back the next day 5/4/24 from returning the 3rd rental car, the car stop again in the middle of the road (limp mode) we waited about 45 minutes with the car on and noticed a strange noise coming from the new installed transmission and the air conditioner turned off. After turning the engine on and off the ac came back on again and car seems to come back normally. We were able to manage to take it to the Nissan dealership with was just 15 minutes away. We left the car and waited for the diagnosis to be made on Monday 5/6/24. We were informed that same transmission code showed which means the new installed refurbished transmission was gone bad!!! and the good news was we don't have to pay for another transmission, but we must pay for labor again $2,696.

15 Power Train problem of the 2017 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 12/25/2023

The transmission just stops shifting out of nowhere and has had a transmission judder code since ive owned it. The transmission shakes at acceleration about 90% of the time.

16 Power Train problem of the 2016 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 09/15/2023

I recently purchased this vehicle from hhgreg in tampa, FL in may 2023. We found out it was associated with a recall regarding the brakes within 60days of having the vehicle, which brandon Nissan took care of. My car only has 40,000 miles on it now. We bought it with only having 36,000 miles on it. Therefore, we've only driven it 4k miles. However, for the last 3 months, this car will literally shut off while driving, mainly when taking a turn. Which, as you can imagine is extremely unsafe, especially in the middle of a main intersection, which has now happened to me three times. We have had 3 mechanics look at the car, including someone from brandon Nissan, and no one is able to figure out why the car keeps losing power. When you run a diagnostic on it, all the codes come back as passing. After sitting for a day or so, it will start back up, maybe run 24-72hrs, then it will completely power down again. The car has a brand new battery in it. The alternator is giving out the correct voltage. But something in the charging system and or electrical system is not working. There has to be a shortage or a defect in this models engine. A vehicle with this low of mileage is basically brand new and should not have these issues! I am paying for a car I can't even use or rely on. Very frustrated. This will be the last time I ever purchase a Nissan vehicle.

17 Power Train problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 09/02/2023

No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle remained at the dealer and had not yet been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the extended warranty had expired. The failure mileage was approximately 157,000.

18 Power Train problem of the 2014 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 06/15/2023

Over the last couple months I've noticed my vehicle delay acceleration after coming to a stop. I've also noticed jerking while driving at a constant speed. First I thought it was bad gas but the problem has persisted for several fill ups now. I thought maybe the transmission fluid needed to be replaced so I paid a couple hundred bucks to have it serviced. The problem continued. I took it to a local car shop to get it scanned. There were no codes present at the time. A few weeks later and after nearly being struck by three different vehicles in one day, I decided to try a different car repair shop. At the tune of another $91. 00 for the diagnosis, this time it threw 5 codes all for transmission. The mechanic proceeded to tell me about all of the problems people have been having with Nissan's and their cvt transmissions. It's $5k to fix the issue and I'm outside of the extended warranty timeframe. I read about the recent lawsuits against Nissan for this issue. Would be nice if they extended that warranty a little further.

19 Power Train problem of the 2016 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 04/26/2023

The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated while approaching a stop light, the vehicle started jerking. The contact pulled over and the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and the crank shaft was replaced. On another occasion while at a stop light, the contact became aware of smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact attempted to accelerate; however, the vehicle failed to respond. There was no warning light illuminated. While driving back to the residence, there was smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 100,406.

20 Power Train problem of the 2016 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 04/15/2023

My 2016 Nissan Maxima has 59000 miles and im having problems with the cvt transmission juddering when pressing gas slowly hesitating to change gears ive seen articles about Nissan vehicles having the same issue I guess a death needs to happen so it can be on recall what ashame.

21 Power Train problem of the 2020 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 04/12/2023

My transmission is bad.

22 Power Train problem of the 2016 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 03/10/2023

Vehicle intermittently jerks upon acceleration and has become excessive. Rpms drop and surge which cause a lack in power. Vehicle was taken to my personal mechanic who diagnosed it as a software issue with the cvt transmission and I was told I needed to take it directly to a Nissan dealer. My mechanic informed me that Nissans have had several issues with the transmission. After further research I found an abundance of complaints from other consumers under lemon law that they experienced the same issue and some experienced stalling related to the cvt transmission. The dealer also informed me that the Nissan does have known transmission issues but it is not currently considered a recall. I am requesting that this matter be looked into as a recall. My concern is that if the vehicle stalls on me in the middle of traffic that my safety and my family’s safety could be endangered.

23 Power Train problem of the 2016 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/21/2023

Vehicle has acceleration issues. Started June 2022 and has continued frequently since. Will randomly stop accelerating then if I try to let off the gas pedal and apply again it shudders so hard it shakes the car. After trying 3-4 times it will accelerate again. The rpm will shoot down to 1 and straight back up to 1. 5-2. Maintenance shop has been unable to figure out what’s wrong but it seems many 2016 Maxima owners are having similar issues. Why has there not been a recall to fix this issue? it becomes a serious danger when driving on highways or at high speeds. Someone’s going to get hurt because if this!.

24 Power Train problem of the 2011 Nissan Maxima

26 Power Train problem of the 2013 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 09/21/2022

A recall and class action lawsuit was issued for the 2013 altima but not the 2013 Maxima. They have the same cvt transmission, my cvt transmission on my Maxima just went out. Both the Maxima and the altima should have been included in these recalls if they have the exact same cvt transmission.

27 Power Train problem of the 2018 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 09/07/2022

I having problems with the transmission in the vehicle. The vehicle shakes during acceleration, you can see the gages on the dashboard shaking. 29 Power Train problem of the 2016 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 08/19/2022

What component or system failed or malfunctioned etc. -the Nissan cvt transmission that is used in all Nissan models and has a known history of premature failure. My 2016 Maxima has 48,000 miles and a completely failed transmission. Yes it is available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? -my two kids were in the car with all three times the accelerator stopped working while in motion due to the cvt transmission. All happened in chicago city traffic. Luckily I was able to coast into a safe position each time but I was lucky not to get stuck in the middle of intersection. -incident order was the same each time. Accelerator would stop working while in the drive gear. After a minute in park the car would seemingly work again, only for the accelerator to fail again shortly thereafter. Then eventually the electrical system shorted due to the transmission and the car was completely locked up, to the point of not being able to shift into neutral or move the steering wheel. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? -the problem has been confirmed via Nissan's settlement of lawsuits relate to the cvt transmission, yet they continue to put them in all new models. My car was inspected by an independent transmission shop and they confirmed the engine computer is producing the "kill code" meaning the transmission is failing. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? -I took it to a Nissan dealership for service (berman Nissan in chicago) and described exactly the same problems I later found via research about the cvt transmissions. Their service techs said I needed to replace the alternator, which made zero sense so I declined. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? -no warning lamps, only infrequent acceleration problems in the months prior.

30 Power Train problem of the 2011 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 08/17/2022

Cvt transmission jerking , engine is always idling hard sometimes wants to even shut off , accelerating sometimes takes a lil while to respond , rack and pinion assembly faulty I would like for Nissan to fix my car or get a lump sum check for all faulty errors these cars have.

31 Power Train problem of the 2017 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 07/20/2022

I have had my 2017 Nissan Maxima since 2018. It had 29,963 miles when I purchased it. Since I have had it I put 33,000 miles on it and had all of the recommended service done on at the dealership. This would include having the transmission flushed at 32000 miles. My car currently has 62000 miles on it and the cvt transmission has been slipping and the car shudders at low speeds. I took it to the dealership and they told me that it needed to be replaced. I really feel that Nissan needs to investigate how many transmissions have issues with this low mileage. The standard warranty on the power-train is 60,000 miles, how convenient for them.

32 Power Train problem of the 2014 Nissan Maxima

34 Power Train problem of the 2016 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 06/01/2022

Problem 1. Airbag. Driver's side airbag prematurely failed in 2021. Dealer says requires replacement of driver's seat back at $5k problem 2. Transmission failed prematurely (77,000 miles) after placing me in multiple dangerous traffic situations. The car would fail to accelerate and eventually stall while I was turning or simply driving. Once it failed to accelerate when I was turning and I was almost struck by oncoming traffic! it was only the grace of god that saved me.

35 Power Train problem of the 2016 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 05/13/2022

It is random when it happens but this will be the third time this has happened. While driving my car will stop, the car will still be running, steering wheel is stiff and I’m not able to accelerate and sometimes brake. It is very dangerous! this car should have a recall!.
