Nissan Maxima owners have reported 46 problems related to transmission not go into gear (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Nissan Maxima based on all problems reported for the Maxima.
Car was fine initially then started car which took longer than normal to start and car would not hardly go due to it not being in 1st gear. Put the transmission into manual mode and downshifted it to first and got a hard clunk but car would now go under its own power but when you put it back in auto mode it goes straight to 3rd gear. Shut car off came back later and started car it started right up and had no issues with transmission. Drove it for a bit turned car off for a bit and then went to start again and had the long start and bad shifts again.

My car transmission is unstable. I have a 2014 Nissan Maxima with 88k miles and check ingine soon sensor came up. My car on streets was not shifting properly and eventually would stall. Ran diagnostic, p1778 code for transmission step motor replacement. Replaced this part and transmission still giving issues. My car has stalled on me several times on the highway with my family in the car, very hazardous. The transmission will not shift into gear properly, wont pick up on speed until late , causing rpms to rise dramatically. I've read online in countless posts that the cvt transmission in Nissans are terrible. This is a Nissan issue and needs to be addressed. Very unsafe for Nissan drivers with cvt transmission. I can't afford to pay for a new transmission and I feel that Nissan should honor a transmission replacement for all who have come victim to their faulty cvt transmissions. These faulty issues pose a threat to the drivers, passengers, and all who use the roads for driving, pedestrian walking and driving on highways.

The 2005 Nissan Maxima has a terrible transmission. Problems shifting gears and when trying to accelerate it wont shift out of gears to go faster. Such as if I stop at a stop light or stop sign and then try to go again it accelerates very (5mph). Also when shifting into drive, it does this loud banging jerk that jerks the entire car. Was told transmission is slipping. There are thousands of other complaints for the nissian Maxima transmission and needs to be a recall on the transmission. Car is only 13 years old.

Transmission failing delay in gear select followed by a hard thump hard shifting after 30min did not expect this from a car with 108k miles well taken care of.
Transmission not changing gears and speedometer not working. Slow acceleration, seems like it is starting out in a higher gear.
Tl- the contact owns a 2004 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated that there was a failure that was randomly progressing each time the gear was changed from reverse to drive. The contact noticed that the gear took an extended period of time and that there was an abnormal noise each time the failure happened. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who serviced the transmission and the remedy did not prevent the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer for further inspection and diagnosis. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 112,000. Dyd.
I purchased my 05 Maxima in April of 2014 and immediately after driving it home a hard shift into 3rd and into 4th happened. I put the car in park, my mechanic friend was with me he had me put the care in drive and it slammed into gear. I contacted a mechanic that worked on transmission and found out it was the valve body defect that was never recalled and a major problem in that model. I purchased a used/new valve body from a transmission shop, it lasted a few months went bad as in jumping out of gear, staying stuck in 5th or 3rd, putting it in park and trying to shift to drive and it not going into gear. I returned the part got another used valve body and it only lasted a few weeks. Now I am having to purchase a new valve body from Nissan hoping this will fix it. After reading many forums of the same issue, no longer able to bypass the issue and wishing Nissan would acknowledge the problem I am stuck with being almost 2000 out of pocket on what seemed to be a good deal.
After reading multiple reviews, it looks like my car is having the same issues. I am driving down the road and the freeways and suddenly my car would shut down. On the freeway. With 2 babies in the car. I have taken my car in multiple times and nothing seems to fix the issues. In addition, my car jerks multiple times and wont kick into gear while driving and then all of a sudden my "check engine light comes on".

My transmission slowly began to kick and jerk. After a while it got worse and worse. It has got me into many near accidents do to either jerking or failed to shift and accelerate. It now will not shift into gear at all, and is currently in the shop. I have seen many complaint about this issue with Nissan, and think it is unacceptable that they do not recall these transmissions.
At 66,000 miles (approximately) the car wiould not shift into gear when warm,. (warm defined as driven in excess of 30-45 minutes). At that point the car would not shft into gear immediately. Then car would suddenly slam into gear, causing the car to lunge unexpecxtedly we took the car off the road and delivered to Nissan dealer. At first the nisan dealer was unable to diagnose. Eventually, they diagnosed a bad transmission. To get a second opinion we broiught the car to a transmission specialist who indicated the problem was the valve throttle (a part of the transmission). His experiences were that this was a fault he had seen on other Nissan tranmission sets (valve body) in that era cost of part with labor $1,895 - not covered by warranty nisan has no recall or technical service bulletin available on this issue aside from cost, car slamming into gear, lunging is not safe.
While driving at slow speed I noticed that the gear shifts were really hard and jerky, both up shift and down shift. I pulled over and stopped the car and put the car in park it was fine then when I put the car in drive it did no slowly move forward like it normally would. So I pressed the gas pedal slowly and noticed the gear shift into first really hard it felt like something just hit the car. I researched and found that several people with this 6th generation Nissan Maxima (2006) and the 5 speed at have the same issue. I called Nissan and they did not offer to fix the issue for me. I was told that I did not have a "business relationship" with the dealer and they would not be able to help me. Upon asking to elaborate what a "business relationship" meant, they told me that it was not serviced by Nissan dealerships on a regular basis. I am really disappointed with Nissan for not taking responsibility for using faulty equipment.
The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated while driving approximately 15 to 20 mph he noticed the gears would slip between first and second which also included a harsh jerking motion. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who advised him that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 114,000. The current mileage was approximately 118,500.
Transmission experiences extremely harsh shifting between 1st and 2nd gear. Seems to be worse when vehicle is warmed up. Occurrence is intermittent. Vehicle will slip completely out of gear when turning a corner under braking, then slam back into gear as gas is applied exiting the turn. Vehicle also will hesitate when shifting from reverse to drive for 10 seconds, then slam into drive. Vehicle slipping out of gear and then slamming into gear could lead to possible rear collision. Also feels like it could not go back into gear when driving on a hill. With the number of blog posts regarding this issue it is obviously not isolated. I have been informed that the only 'fix' is to replace the transmission at my expense to the tune of $3000-$4000. Neighbor traded in her . 05 Maxima for a Toyota because dealer told her she had to pay $4000 for a new tranny for the maximum. As it is apparent that Nissan will not voluntarily own up to what it obviously a manufacturing or design defect, I hope they will soon be forced into issuing a recall and fixing this issue.
Car shifts really hard from 1st to 2nd and revs like its not catching gear like its supposed to do and the transmission flush is not the fix Nissan has a lot of complaints about this why is nothing getting done higher up before someone gets killed or serious injured. 543 reports and what has got done thus far. Also when putting in drive it pauses then switches into gear cause it to jerk real bad like the tranny an motor mounts are about to fall out. Please someone take action about this issue !!!!!!.
I pulled out at a busy intersection and my Nissan Maxima stalled out, it seemed like it would not go into first gear, even though I was pressing the gas pedal to accelerate, the car just wouldn't go into gear! it caused other cars to have to slam on brakes and drive on the shoulder to avoid hitting me and each other! my car finally "jerked" violently into gear. I took it to the Nissan dealership and they said this was a known defect in the transmission, 4,000 to fix!! mind you they will replace it with a new defective transmission that there it no guarantee it will last more than 1 year! not a safe car to drive in metropolitan areas!.
The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated the transmission failed in second gear. Whenever the vehicle was shifted from second to first gear, there was a loud noise before shifting. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who inspected the failure and advised that the transmission needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was also contacted who advised that a regional representative would be contacted for further assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 100,000.
The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Maxima. The contact was driving under 40 mph when the vehicle failed to shift gears properly. The check engine warning light illuminated prior to the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 49,290 and the current mileage was 49,340.
Tl-the contact owns a 2005 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated the transmission failed and would not engage in gear. The contact stated whenever he put the vehicle in gear it would jerk and exhibit a clunking noise. In addition, it would take a while to go into gear. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not notified. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 85,000 and the current mileage was 92,000. Kmj.
I was driving 45mph and came to a red light which I stopped and when the light turned green I placed my foot on the gas and my Nissan would not get past 3rd gear and jerked really bad before it would accelerate. This happens now all the time and I even had transmission fluid replaced in my car which has not prevented the issue that I am still having faulty transmission.
While traveling at highway speeds the transmission (automatic) abruptly changed gears into neutral for several seconds and then abruptly went back into gear. This rapid transition between powered and unpowered condition caused the front wheel drive car to swerve abruptly from torque steer. Subsequent to this initial event the transmission continued to change gears into and out of drive or fail to engage gears as it changes between gears. On taking this to the dealer they stated the controller needed to be updated and performed this service. Approximately one week after this service the transmission again started randomly changing from a powered condition to neutral at highway and other speeds. The car is currently undrivable due to the torque steer caused by the abrupt changes in the transmission making it unsafe to travel at other then slow speeds.
The transmission slips, jumps out of gear between gears. Often it will go to shift then it revs up not in gear instead of shifting then after a few seconds it slams hard into gear. This is not a daily constant issue it is random and sometimes will go weeks between having the issue pop up. When it pops up it will happen during that entire drive. The next time it is driven even that same day even just 15 minutes later it will not have shifting issues sometimes it does. There are many many many customers complaining about this issue with Nissan transmissions.

My Maxima shifts hard when switching into 1st to 2nd gear. It pushes the car forward when moving at slow speeds. When downshifting from 5th to 4th gear, there is a temporary "no shift" where it feels as if the car is not in a gear and the rpm drops low. When putting the car directly into "drive", it takes the vehicle 3-5 seconds to switch into gear. When it switches into "drive", you can feel it push the car when your foot is on the brake. If you push the gas when it completely does not shift, the transmission will clunk and jerk the car forward. Recently at 126,000 miles, the car is switching gears more freely than normal, constantly switching back and forth between 4th and 5th gear. When going around corners at a faster speed, the transmission will slip, losing power to the car and jerking back into gear. Sometimes while driving, the car will come out of gear and go right back in. The transmission in the 2004-2005 Maximas are obviously faulty. Also, when pushing the gas, there is a delay on moving forward and results in a harder push forward.
Have a 2005 Nissan Maxima. It has automatic transmission. It is jerking real hard between 1-2 gear and when slowing down it also jerks. It jerks so hard it feel like im being rearended. This is ridiculous and Nissan is aware of this problem and offers no assistance! they know they put a messed up taransmission in these cars! it is not fair! I am not goin to get killed because my car will not go when I pull out on freeway. I could of got killed! it jerks when going from drive to park. I pulled out on freeway this morning and my car would not go, almost got hit by a vehicle. This is a defected transmisiion and there are 1,000's of complaints all over the web about these cars. Nissan will not help me at all. This is a major safety issue. Someone can get killed because of poor workmanship done on these transmissions. This is not right! this needs a recall and Nissan needs to fix this! Nissan needs to fix this! they need to fix this!!! my family will sue them if we get hit by a car and me and my kids die because of my transmission not going into gear and getting stuck!.
The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Maxima. While driving 25-30 mph, the contact noticed that the gear shifted hard several times as if someone was hitting the vehicle from the rear. The vehicle was taken to a local transmission ship where the contact was informed that the transmission valve body was defective. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 77,087 and the current mileage was 77,809.
While driving on highway, the automatic transmission downshifted and was stuck between 2nd and 3rd gear. When I came to complete stop, and then started to accelerate, the car would move forward very very slowly and then pick up speed. But car did not change gears. Once I turn off engine and waited for about 10 minutes, I turned engine back on and problem went away. I have taken it to dealer but they cannot duplicate issue. This continuously happens to me and cannot figure what to do. The car has actually completely turn off on the road while driving and have avoided accidents. Once the car turns off on the road at high speeds, the steering wheel locks up and gets difficult to pull over on the side of the road/highway. The 2004 Maxima, as I have read online, are having transmission issues. I will never purchase another Nissan vehicle.
2005 Nissan Maxima - incident report - faulty transmission led to car's failure to accelerate in intersection causing near collision with 18 wheeler. As I was entering intersection an 18 wheeler was coming down the hill. I needed to accelerate to move out of his way and when I attempted to do so the engine merely revved and would not go into gear. I have read and reported this problem to Nissan and this agency as have so very many others. I suppose it will require a death to get anyone to sit up and make Nissan be held accountable for faulty aw55-50s transmissions. I have spoken with shops all over this nation and individuals with this same problem. We don't all have 3 to 4 grand sitting around to pay for that which Nissan should be held accountable. The transmission is faulty and the Nissan is not the only auto with this in it. The NHTSA needs to step up to the plate and hold them accountable before a life if forfeit from their failure to act. Read the consumer complaints on this product - there are not 10's - not 100's - but, thousands.
I was happy driving home with new rims after buying my 2006 Maxima and was turning into my parking spot and needed to back-up because of space restrictions. I placed the vehicle back into drive and it did not go into gear, there was lag and a clunk back to 1st gear. Happy to sad in less than 1 second, I became. The vehicle hesitated at times and now it does it more often. Even when I drive it clunks into the lower gears and now the car feels like the transmission disengages from the motor. The rpms flare up to 8000 then catch gear which makes my tires chirp causing my head to go back by the sudden acceleration change.
After reporting transmission problem to Nissan twice and was told there was nothing wrong with my transmission I was on the highway and the car would not accelerate because of the transmission causing me to almost be struck by another car. I did my research to find that not only have many consumers complained about the same issue for Nissan Maxima 2004-2006 transmission but Nissan is refusing o recall these transmissions as they are faulty and can also be deadly due to the nature of jerking and car not kicking into gears.
Automatic transmission hard shift between 1st and 2nd. Delayed engagement from 2nd to 3rd the will drop a gear almost come to a stop with high rpm. Hard shifts are violent and start after about 10 minutes of driving. Have been making due with manual shift but now is not engaging in overdrive. Car will drop out of overdrive not allowing highway speed. Vehicle will stay in 5th gear even coming to a complete stop and then moving again. Will not drop down a gear. Have to pull over to set the car in park and restart the car to get it out of 5th gear. Car has actually stalled slowing to a stop light or traffic. Check engine light has come on and will not pass inspection in texas because code says transmission issue and to pass I must now spend $2500 for rebuilt or $4500+ for new. This is a total mechanical error which Nissan is not accepting responsibility and is an actual safety hazard when the car dies at speed and downshift can be so violent that you drop 10 mph immediately and causes steering issues to control the jolt.
The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Maxima. While reversing out of the driveway, the vehicle would not shift into gear. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where it would not move at first but suddenly jerked forward. The dealer stated that the automatic transmission was failing but the problem was not bad enough to be repaired although the contact had an extended warranty. The current and failure mileages were approximately 62,000.
The contact owns 2004 Nissan Maxima. The automatic transmission failed and would not shift into gear while driving approximately 20 mph. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the transmission need to be replaced at the contacts expense. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer stated that the warranty was expired. The failure and current mileages were 57,218.
The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated that the vehicle would not shift gears without hesitation and it would also slip out of gear. The failure occurred 30% of the time while driving 40 mph. She took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the motor mounts; however, the transmission continued to malfunction. The vehicle was taken to a transmission specialist who stated that the transmission needed to be rebuilt. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The current mileage was approximately 9,000 and the failure mileage was approximately 78,700.
