But the biggest problem has happened twice now; where the car has been sitting idle at a stop light, the transmission has slipped out of 1st gear, and when the light turned green the car would not rev up and I was stuck holding up traffic until I put the car in park, was able to obtain rpms and then put the car back in drive.

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

Nissan Maxima 2004 3. 5 around 82000 miles the transmission began to jump into and out off gear. Im at 95000 miles and the problem is worse. It slipps out of gear easier causing the car to slow down, had close reaer ended accidents, fortunately the cars behind me were paying attention. This problems happens when the car is at operating tempature. I switch from automatic to standard and the problem continues to jump into and out of gear. Several times it has gotten stuck in 5th gear. Had it towed once already for the same cause. 3 mechanics told me it was a problem with the valves in the transmission, estimates of $2000 to $3500 to fix. All have said that this is a known problem with this make, model and year of car. Rpm shoots up past 7000 on some gear changes only to slip back out of gear. I can not accelerate properly when merging onto freeways because of this problem. Check this web page. . . . . Read more...

46 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2005 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 12/15/2009

2005 Nissan Maxima the transmission has hard jerky shifts between 2nd and 3rd (slamming into gear). Also the transmission slips out of gear occasionally during regular driving allowing the engine to rev freely then jerking back into gear. This can cause sudden acceleration or torque steer. I'm very concerned that this car will cause an accident. The car now has a burnt oil type smell. (I know this is not good). I just had the transmission flushed and new fluid put in four months ago. We now have 70,000 miles on it.

48 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2005 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 11/23/2009

My 2005 Nissan Maxima has started showing signs of what may be serious transmission problems. As to the best course of action to correct these intermittent and random symptoms that include: 1. Takes about 5 seconds to click into gear after the shift lever is put in "d" 2. Very hard jerky shifts between 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st and accompanied by loud clunking noise. 3. Transmission slips out of gear during regular driving allowing the engine to rev freely then jerking back into gear with a loud clunk. The is followed by a burnt oil / electrical type smell that gets inside the car and evident outside after stopping. Sometimes I go for days with no symptoms at all and other times it may happen a dozen times in a day. I took it in to the dealer and none of the problems showed up for them but they noted that the engine mounts were broken but that would not cause these symptoms. They suggested a new transmission and motor mounts for $4,000.

49 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2005 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

My Nissan Maxima '05 has about 37000 miles. Recently, the transmission has gone bad. The car does not shift rapidly enough when I accelerate. Also, it has sometimes slipped out of gear at low speeds, causing it to lurch forward in bumper-to-bumper traffic! this is a major safety hazard.

50 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2005 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

My 2005 Nissan Maxima started having shifting problems when slowing. I would be coming to a stop sign and the transmission wouldn't jump out of gear and the car would free roll. Once stopped the car would jerk and try to take off while foot on brake. Now the transmission shifts very hard to the point to feels like im in an accident or the engine is coming through the hood. When I accelerate onto freeway from ramp im scared that I may get rear ended because the car just wont accelerate properly to get into lane safe. This occurs everyday particularly when car warms up and I then begin to smell electric burn or oil burn.

51 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2005 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

2005 Nissan Maxima transmission is shifting hard and slipping. It shifts hard between 1st & 2nd gear and between 2nd & 3rd. It slips out of gear between 2nd & 3rd and then slams into gear. This is an extreme saftey hazard. I have been told by a Nissan service consultant that the transmission needs to be replaced. So, I went for a second opinion. The indepenant transmission specialist told me this was common in the '04 & '05 and most llikely the valve body. He stated he was surprised it lasted this long. There are thousands of complaints of the exact same issue. Of those who chose to go to an indepent transmission shop all have replaced the valve body and had no further issues. I have contacted Nissan consumer affairs and I was told to take it to a Nissan service center.

52 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2005 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

This a complaint about the transmission of the 2005 Nissan Maxima. My Maxima only has 60,000 miles on it, however it has began to jerk while changing gears, and to slip out of gear while it is on the road. This is very dangerous, particularly the slipping out of gear. I have not yet gotten into an accident or had my car stop on the road. However, I feel that it is only a matter of time. Apparently this is a very widespread problem with the with the 2004 and 2005 Nissan Maximas. The problem first began to happen about every 3 days, but now it happens about every other day. Especially when the car is going from 2nd to 3rd gear. I have had the transmission fluid checked, and was told that my fluid level was perfectly fine. The shop recommended that I take my car to a transmission specialist, which I have not yet done. They also mentioned to me that the transmissions on the 2004 and 2005 Maximas are known to be defective, and usually go bad at about 60,000 or 70,000 miles. I believe that the transmissions on the 2004 and 2005 Nissan Maximas are defective and need to be recalled.

53 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2004 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 06/01/2009

I have 2004 Nissan Maxima. I am experiencing shifting problems. It seems to slip out of gear on 3rd. Or experience extreme hesitation when going to 3rd. Seems not to securely sit in gear. Then intermittently, when reversing. Car hesitates 3-5 sec to shift into drive. Then once it does. It drops very hard into gear.

54 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2004 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 03/27/2009

I purchased a Nissan Maxima with approx 90,000 miles in June 2007. I purchased an extended warranty, however after less than a year the transmission was slipping very bad. It needed to be replaced, so the warranty only provided a transmission with equal value at the date of purchase, so they installed a 90,000 mile transmission, this transmission is now slipping out of gear bad. I think their should be a recall because I have read a ton of complaints online about this same issue.

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Maxima. While the vehicle was stopped at a traffic light, the contact tried to accelerate but the vehicle would not shift out of first gear. The contact coasted to the side of the road and turned the vehicle off. When the vehicle was restarted and shifted from first to second gear, the vehicle jerked. 57 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2000 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 07/26/2008

My Maxima jumps or slips out of gear while driving. I was just driving on the highway and without warning, the car slipped into neutral. It would no longer accelerate (pressing the gas just caused the engine to rev). I had my children in the car and it was lucky that I was able to get into the breakdown without being hit. I have taken the car to my repair shop and they "think" it's the transmission, but not sure. It has occurred twice since then. This is an extremely dangerous defect that apparently is a common problem with Nissans 2000 and later.

58 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2004 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 06/13/2008

Been having numerous transmissions issues with the car over the past 2 to 3 years. Already to had to replace the transmission once, now starting to have the same issues again. Lots of jerking from gear to gear, lots of difficulty getting the car to up shift or down shift; car locking in 4th or 5th gear and will not shift out of that gear. Can not believe there has not been a recall based on the number of internet complaints on this issue.

59 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2004 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 06/09/2008

I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima with a little over 90,000 miles. It is come to my attention that my vehicle is not the only 2004 Nissan Maxima with this problem. It slips out of gear and makes the vehicle jump as if someone rear ended me. It shifts really hard from !st to 2nd even 3rd when I drive throughout the city. It does it only when the car warms up and it does it consistently. I've done a transmission flush which was required by the dealership and it stopped doing it for about 5 miles into the ride, then it began doing it. I went online and found thousands and thousands of people with the same vehicle and with the same problem. They all have done all the transmission repairs possible and the problem still maintains. I refuse to spend $4,000. 00 on a new transmission because I do not have that money. These transmissions need to be recalled.
