1 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2005 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 08/01/2020

Timing chain issues . Had it repaired a second time and it seems it's still has problems. Last repair was due to broken guide and and broken tensioners. Am worried it will happen again.

3 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2007 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 07/07/2016

We were headed out on a 2400 mile trip and wanted to make sure our van was ready. First issue was the struts. Got those fixed. A week later we were back in because of engine noise and they fixed the timing chain and tensioners. A few days later again because of engine noise we found out the wheel bearing needed fixed.

4 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2007 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 10/09/2015

Timing chain and tensioner began to fail around 105,000. Cost to replace was 2166. 57. I was under the impression that timing chains were supposed to last longer than that amount of time.

5 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2007 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 05/05/2015

This is by far the worst case of negligence I have witnessed from an automaker! again Nissan ignores and covers up a known problem. The timing chain ¿death rattle¿ is highly annoying and makes the owner feel as if the engine will ¿go¿ at any minute. The fact that the repair/replacement cannot be performed without removing the engine from the car is appalling. The poor design on the tensioner guide is well document by Nissan and yet they continued to pass off inferior products to unsuspecting customers. Truly, truly disgusting behavior from an automaker. To ease their conscious they issues a TSB on the subject. What they need to do is issue an immediate recall on all vehicles affected. My dealer quoted me $2800 to fix this defect. $2800! $2800! are you serious? Nissans lack of consideration for the customer is inexcusable.

6 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2007 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 03/03/2014

Issue with timing chain noise when car starts. Faulty timing chain idler and tensioner causes timing chain to be sloppy.

7 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2007 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 12/20/2012

I have recently filed a complaint with Nissan USA regarding the timing chain rattling noise on my 2007 Nissan Quest. I was told that the company is not responsible for the repairs since my car was out of warranty. However, the company has issued service bulletin on this issue indicating a major design defficiency with chain guide, tensioner and chains. Timing chain is not supposed to go out at this low miles interval, and noting the various complaints on the web, I would request that this issue being investigated and be made into a recall for these vehicles. This can be a safety issue if the chain were to break while operating the vehicle.

8 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2004 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 08/20/2012

Vehicle coming off turnpike entering onto the interstate would not accelerate past 45 mph onto the interstate almost ran over by vehicles when I was coming off the ramp. Very dangerous. Managed to get van to a safe place where we had it towed to our home. We had our mechanic look at it and he diagnosed it as the timing chain tensioners needed replacing and it had jumped time. He would not touch it since this is a known problem and there is a technical service bulletin issued for this year van concerning the tensioners. Had it then towed to Nissan and they quoted 1700 to fix the mechanic even stated that it is a huge problem and he is seeing at least 1 a week with this very same issue. But Nissan wont issue a recall. Is it going to take some fatalities for them to wake up and realize this is serious. After work performed to van they called and said it is still misfiring that they found valve cover leaking oil on spark plugs another 600 dollars to fix this. I just replaced spark plugs in 2010. Also replaced brakes 3 times and tires 2 times now. Alternator also replaced. I bought this van hoping it would be a safe and reliable van for my family to enjoy for a long time it has low miles and I hate to get rid of it. I am at the point though that I keep putting money into it thinking we will be able to be safe and next thing you know something else is wrong. I feel Nissan should recall all models affected and fix this plastic tensioner on the metal chain, they know better this is a way for them to become richer off the people that trusted them. Never will my family or friends buy Nissan again> since this has happened I have talked with many people that own or have owned a Quest and they were not happy either. Please start a investigation before we lose a life.

9 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2005 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

I purchased this van brand new and after a couple years began to hear a subtle tapping noise every so often coming from the engine. I was told its a lifter tapping and may come and go but not worth repairing because it will cost a lot of money and it really doesn't effect performance. After another year or 2 the noise got really loud and the check engine light came on. After doing research online I found hundreds/thousands of complaints about the same thing. Come to find out we all had the same issue, the timing chain tensioner was not applying the correct amount of pressure to the guide due to a defect in engine design that causes the plastic on the guide to break and slip down. This causes slack in the timing chain which in turn caused the rapid tapping noise as it struck the inside of the engine. At this point my engine will not start due to the chain jumping teeth and the timing thrown off. I am now without a vehicle. I contacted Nissan and they told me it's out of warrantee so too bad. This is a known serious defect with the engine that was also installed in maxima, altima, and x-terra. There should have been a recall but most likely deemed too expensive to perform. Also the issue happens over time typically between 70k-120k miles therefor most vehicles that have this problem will be out of warrantee and they won't cover it. They did redesign the replacement part guide, which to me shows they knew it was a design flaw but its minimum $2000 to have repaired. Very poor way to do business but they got what they wanted I suppose.

10 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2007 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 01/01/2012

The contact owns a 2007 Nissan Quest. While parked, the contact heard a whining noise coming from the engine. The failure also occurred while driving at various speeds. The contact stated that the noise had become louder when driving at faster speeds. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics where the technician stated that the timing chain tensioner would have to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 78,000.

11 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2007 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 12/15/2011

Loud squealing noise from secondary timing chain tensioners in engine. Was told if tensioners break, timing chain would release into engine and cause a hazard. Dealership fixed it- $1700 and the secondary tensioners are worn and cheap. The new ones are much different. If I had not had the squealing noise, the timing chain would have been released inside the engine.

12 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2004 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 05/02/2011

There is a loud, annoying and dangerous rattling sound coming from the motor. Based on what seems like hundreds of thousands of complaints and many opinions from very experienced mechanics, it is the timing chain - the whole thing- from the chain, tensioners and everything associated with the entire timing chain mechanism. This is absurdly annoying, extremely dangerous and outrageously labor intensive and expensive to fix. I, like so many others out there, put my family in this vehicle on a daily basis and have to wonder just how safe this thing is. What happens if the chain breaks? what happens if it breaks while on a major highway? I just had my family to florida this summer - can't imagine that scenario. Obviously, this problem exists absolutely everywhere with this vehicle.

13 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2004 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 04/10/2011

Loud rattling in my engine when I start my van and when I drive through town. Very embarressing! mechanic thinks it is the timing chain tensioners in the engine that is going to cost over $3,500. I only have 94,000 miles on the van so it should not be doing this!.

14 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2004 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 02/09/2011

Timing chain tensioner broke causing timing chain to rattle loudly. Nissan said the repair would be about $2,400. 00. Apparently this is a very common problem with the Nissan 3. 5 engine and should be subject to a recall.
