Exhaust became very loud, rattling, etc. Verified that the flange on the muffler had rusted off at the welds. Muffler hangers held the muffler in place. Not able to comment as to whether or not any drivers or passengers suffered from c02 related health or breathing issues.
The Nissan dealership informed me of a broken mid pipe on the muffler. I researched the issue and found that many people were told that it is related to salt on the roads. The issue appears to be persistent across Nissan Versas in the late 2000 models (especially 2009). There is a loud roaring noise from the muffler and a strong gaseous smell inside when the engine is on and no other heating/cooling functions are turned on.
My Nissan has under 50,000 miles on it. I drive in new england, roads are a bit tougher- however my muffler is making a loud noise and hanging loose from the body of my car. My resonator pipe snapped and I got a quote for $931. 75 from a local meineke. After doing some research it seems like a lot of people have this problem. It seems dangerous that this could happen in such a short amount of time on a car that should still be running efficiently, I noticed it while driving, got home and pulled over to notice the muffler was very very loose.

I had my mechanic check my car after I heard noise/vibration coming from the car when stopped at a light. It turns out the muffler is rusting from the manifold back: including catalytic converter, center and rear muffler, hardware and gaskets and the heat shield needs secured. The car is just over 50,000 miles, not a lot and Nissan should be replacing this free of charge but I will probably have to pay for it. This is a danger and they should build their parts better to handle road salt in the winter months.

2009 Nissan Versa. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle coil springs fracture issues. The consumer stated while driving, she hit a small pothole and heard a loud bang. The consumer and her husband thought it was a flat tire, but after pulling over, they did not see anything. They continued to drive, but then they heard another strange noise and smelled burning rubber. By the time the consumer pulled into the driveway, the tire on the front passenger side was burning. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop. The consumer was informed both front springs were broken on the right side. The consumer stated a couple of years ago, the left rear spring was replaced. Also, the muffler was replaced twice.
The exhaust failed prematurely. Welding of flange at muffler has snapped apart.
The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Versa. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact heard a rattling noise underneath the vehicle. The dealer stated that the muffler welding fractured due to road salt. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 89,000.
Have had my Nissan Versa since 2009, got it with 50 miles on the car. Spent 2 years in florida with it without a problem and in the past year I've had so many issues with this car I'll never buy another Nissan again. Have replaced all of the tires twice and today I was a mile from my home when my car had issues accelerating and starting making a loud rattling noise. I've come to find out that my muffler has broken at the flange. Apparently this is common with these Nissans and nothing has been done to change it. This can cause carbon monoxide poisoning god forbid someone parks this car in their garage and could also cause an accident if the entire muffler rusts and falls out of someones car while their on the highway.

As has been documented in 29 previous complaints on this site, Nissan Versa has known failure of exhaust system flange within 36-48 months, resulting in muffler failure and dangerous levels of toxic fumes entering cabin and outside air. Potential loss of muffler while driving also creates risk of accident and injury to car passengers and/or other vehicles on road. Expense to repair via midas in this circumstance was $474, with this one location reporting this as "standard" issue with all Nissan's, for which they have completed "non stop" repairs. Nissan has refused to offer any assistance to customers on this issue. This is well documented, and a known safety hazard for both potential accidents and air poisoning dot needs to investigate and hold Nissan accountable for recall and repair of this flange.
Loud noise when driving. Took to local mechanic next day and was told the flange broke from the muffler.
Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Nissan Versa. The contact stated that while driving at 30 mph, an abnormal noise was heard near the rear driver side. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the muffler exhaust flange fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000. Ec.
While driving home from work my 2010 Nissan Versa began to make a rumbling sound. It has sense grown to a roar while stopped with the car in drive. I took it to the dealer where I got it and they said the rear muffler assembly had broken loose and was rubbing on the frame causing the noise and vibrations in the driver compartment. Upon a brief internet search I have found that many other Nissan owners have experienced the same problem. Nissan claims it is due to road salt, but the only part that is rusting out is the flange leading to the rear muffler assembly.
Upper part of exhaust manifold cracked causing carbon monoxide to enter cabin anytime blower is turned on.

I purchased this car used from a dealership 11/3/2011, no problems whatsoever, had remainder of regular vehicle warranty left on it, no problems until the other day I thought it sounded louder than normal, so when I drove it yesterday it was still louder and I looked underneath and the muffler is loose and the exhaust sounds terrible. This is terrible for a not even three year old car with less than 30,000 miles on it!!! I called the garage where I bought it and they say it should be covered under warranty but I have to take it over for them to look at first to be sure so it better be or I will be quite upset if I have to fork out money on a car that is less than three years old on something with the exhaust! my previous car was a Dodge and I had it for 7 years and never had any problems with muffler or exhaust needing replaced in 7 years!!.
While driving our muffler started making a clunking sound, I pulled over and realized my muffler was not attached to the exhaust pipe anymore, the connection between the two had rusted. But muffler and pipe are not rusted at all, just the connection. I have heard other complaints about their Nissan doing the same thing, but Nissan wont take the blame and recall the components. Please help.
This car is a 2008. Kept in fantastic condition. The muffler randomly broke off of the car. There is no rust on the underside of the car. The few months it was driven in the north it was washed free of any salt. After researching this it seems to be an ongoing problem with this make and model of car. It was a clean break. Hopefully can be welded back together, but this break is certainly due to the cheap material it is made out of. Nissan should recall these parts. This is affecting alot of Nissan Versa owners around the same exact mileage frame.
The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Versa. The contact stated that the exhaust shook and made a loud noise. The contact also stated that the vehicle lost acceleration power. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was told the flange that connects the manifold to the engine along with the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileages were 56,000. The VIN was not available.
The muffler sound seemed quite loud on Thursday, 12/27/12, something I had not noticed before. The next day Friday, 12/28/12, the muffler started rattling very loudly. I called to make an appt for service and was told it was a very common problem with 2007 Versas. I have an estimate of $400 to fix this. I've have owned other makes of vehicles for over 12 years that never have needed a muffler. Now that I've investigated, there are many reports of this issue, all seemed to report a poor design. The car has been garaged for the entire 6years that I've owned it and the body is actually showing rust that the dealer said Nissan would fix. Nissan refused saying the car is 6 years old.
I replaced the muffler and gasket on my 2007 Nissan Versa on September 21, 2012 the poor quality of the materials that Nissan used for the flange became brittle and cracked, compromising the structural and functional integrity of the muffler at approximately 62,600 miles. I am the original owner and take impeccable care of this vehicle and all my vehicles. If this safety/exhaust/emission problem had not been repaired, it may have caused injury (minor, major, and maybe fatal) to driver and passengers in the Versa as well as other drivers/passengers of other vehicles. This issue should not happen in this make/model/year with low to moderate mileage or any make/model/year of car since mufflers and associated parts have long been perfected.
Muffler flange connecting to exhaust pipe broke. The weld that connects the muffler to the exhaust pipe broke. Had to replace entire muffler over a broken weld. Cost over 300. 00 to fix the issue. Of course, Nissan was no help.
Exhaust pipe weld broke cleanly right at the flange.
My muffler on my 2007 Versa rotted off the main pipe. After doing some research I found out this is a common problem with the Versas. Why is Nissan not recalling these faulty parts. Now I have to shop around and hope to get a good price with replacing the muffler. I am sure I will be back and say the tail pipe had to be replaced because many people have replaced that part already too.
Exhaust system failure. The muffler broke off at the flange that conects it to the rest of the exhaust pipe, this was a failure of the pipe itself. The car has no other signs of rust or breakdown, but the pipe just severed at the point where it attaches to connecting flange.
Tl- the contact owns a 2007 Nissan Versa. While driving approximately 40 mph the contact heard a loud banging noise on the muffler. The contact exit the vehicle, inspected the muffler and noticed that it had separated from the pipe. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer nor was it repaired. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000. Rvk.
When I started, the car I was surprised by a loud sound. I called the mechanic who came to my home. It turns out the sound was the muffler. I had to replace a rusted muffler for a car with low mileage. The car is driven short distances 1-2 times a week.
Pipe from front end of muffler failed at flange weld due (1) mechanical strain, the muffler pipe supports the resonator by pulling the pipe tight; (2) lack of corrosion inhibition; (3) poor quality welding, the components appeared to have not been cleaned first. ==details== [1] the comparatively heavy resonator was supported at the rear only by the pipe segments between it and the muffler. This is a significant amount of mechanical force, applied to a structure not designed to handle it. [2] any car sold to parts of the USA that regularly get snow should have corrosion prevention applied to all underbody components by default. Not doing so is not only a poor business decision but also increases the likelihood of parts falling off and landing in the road. [3] welds to underbody components should be well inspected, as if they become separated parts of the vehicle may cease to function properly or depart from the vehicle entirely, resulting in a safety issue. ==final note== this form does not retain formatting, making the reports unduly difficult to read.
After 50,000+ miles the gasket and muffler had to be replaced due to poor metal and welding construction. This is the only part on the under carriage that is rusted. Seems to be a very common issue and should warrant a recall on at least the 2007 models.
Muffler pipe broke by the flange - car only 4 years old, 60 000 miles (faulty design?) if the muffler ends up on the road on the highway, it can cause accidents.
The gasket muffler is rusted and broke.
On 3/18/2011 I had to have my whole muffler system replaced because it became separated from the engine at the front of the vehicle at 119k miles. (I'm no car expert. ) then today I hear the same loud noises and my vehicle shaking just like a year ago. Right now my car is at 138k miles. I bought the car brand new in July of 2006. I'm taking my car in tomorrow to have it looked at again and I will be very surprised if it is a different issue. I'm worried about driving on the highway and my muffler system coming off and causing an accident. I'm not comfortable driving my car in the state that it is in and I'm definitely not comfortable driving while pregnant with my 2 year old son in the car. I'm not too happy about having to shell out another $700 to get this fixed within a span of 13 months! because of this issue I will not be buying another Nissan vehicle. This should be recalled, I have read so many other people who have had the exact same issues. Nissan claims it's salt damage. In the past year, I have not driven on any salty roads since having my vehicle fixed, so I can't see how it can be blamed on salt. Our winter was so warm our roads didn't even get salted the winter season after I got my muffler system fixed the first time. I've also read that Nissan - canada is fixing it as a measure of goodwill on a case by case basis. I'd love for Nissan to fix my car too since this will be the second time I'm having to fix the exact same issue. I keep my car well maintained and this is the only issue that I've had that has been recurring with my vehicle and has been a major concern for me.
