1 Engine Head Gasket Leaking problem of the 1999 Plymouth Neon

Failure Date: 06/06/2004

Notice oil leak on 1999 Plymouth Neon. Took car to laurel chrylser johnstown PA. On Monday June 7. Was notified that the head gasket was bad. Told them to repair it cost of $534. 00. Told car would be done on Tuesday. It wasn't. Wednesday afternoon dealer called to say he had good news and bad new. Good news was the head gasket was done. But the rear main seal was leaking. Cost to replace seal $334. 00. I asked if car was tested to see if head gasket was the problem. Was told mechanic look and said it was the head gasket. I asked the dealer is the mechanic knew about a service bulletin about the cam sensor seal leaking which was a known problem that when the cam seal leaked it looked like the head gasket was leaking. He said the mechanic looked and he knew it was the head. Car only has 47,576 miles. I question the dealer if the mechanic could have made a mistake. The service manager was rude and said he didn't need to make money with unneccessary repairs. I asked if the vehickle was tested for the problem. He said no. 3 other dealers told me on an oil leak like that the they put a dye in the oil and then to run 1 to 2 days and bring it back. With the dye they can see where the oil is leaking. Laurel didn't do that. Now instead of the car repaired after $534. 00 it will cost another $334. 00 to fix rear main seal. Could have been that all along. No help from the dealer or manufactor. I found on the internet that alot of Neons have this problem.

5 Engine Head Gasket Leaking problem of the 1999 Plymouth Neon

Failure Date: 05/15/2003

I took my car in for a 60,000 mile check-up and was astounded to learn that the head gasket was leaking at only 57,000. I could not afford the repair at this time and the mechanic said that nothing was leaking that would hurt the engine, but it should be taken care of soon. In all the years I've had a car I've never had a leaking head gasket and at 57,000, too. My last car, also a Plymouth, had over 127,000 miles on it and I never had problems with the engine. I do not misuse my vehicle, I have the oil changed every 3 to 6,000 miles and do everything possible to keep it trouble free.

6 Engine Head Gasket Leaking problem of the 1999 Plymouth Neon

Failure Date: 05/06/2003

Head gasket leaking on driver side of car. My mechanic told me the repair would cost over $800. 00, and stated that a recall was made by Plymouth on my Plymouth Neon. He suggested I contact the dealership. I contacted the service department of jack powell Chrysler Plymouth Dodge, escondido, CA where I purchased the car new in sept 1999, and told them about my head gasket oil leak. They asked me for my VIN number. I waited 15 minutes for a woman to return to the phone and said there was no recalls for my vehicle, then hung up on me when I started to ask a question. I told my mechanic about the incident, and he stated he had another customer with the same head gasket leaking on their Neon and Plymouth repaired it. My Neon remains reliable, as long as I put 1. 5 quarts of oil in it every week.

9 Engine Head Gasket Leaking problem of the 1996 Plymouth Neon

Failure Date: 11/16/2001

Oil leak discovered December 1998 (45838 miles on car. ) diagnosed engine head gasket by dealer service. Worked deal with Chrysler since per investigation this appeared to be a common problem. They fixed for 1/2 warranty cost ($180 paid by me. ) February 1999 (47364 miles on car) the leak reoccurred. Dealership replaced at no charge. December 2001 (93648 miles on car) oil leak checked by third party service organization and diagnosed the head gasket leak again (approximate cost to fix $1,400) there is an obvious design/engineering flaw in the engine/head gasket. There should have been a recall and fix to this problem. I have never had to replace even one head gasket on any vehicle I have ever owned and this one has now had the original and two replacements and now needs a third replacement prior to 100,000 miles on the car. Again, my research shows me that this is a very common problem on this vehicle and when I questioned the last replacement, the dealership stated the head gasket was newly engineered and should take care of the problem. Now, not only did I have to pay $180 back then that should have been taked care of by a recall; now I am gioing to have to basically give the care away since I refuse to get it fixed again if it is going to cost me any money. Chrysler's inability to claim responsibility for an obvious design/engineering flaw and lack of action to recall and fix this problem has cost them this customer for life and as many people as I can tell about this issue.

11 Engine Head Gasket Leaking problem of the 1998 Plymouth Neon

Failure Date: 09/01/2001

Initially, I went in to the dealer for a new battery six months after I had bought the car, only to find out that there were numerous parts that needed to be repaired. Among those, the most expensive and most surprising was the engine oil leak. I was told that the cylinder head gasket was leaking motor oil, and that it was imperative that it be fixed as soon as possible. As a student, $670 for the head gasket was an extraordinary amount to invest. The advisor at the dealer informed me that the model of the car inherently contained a poorly designed engine, which was cause to the matter. He also mentioned that he wondered why the manufacturer had not conducted a recall. I did not know that the consumer could place a complaint for a possible recall, and was only advised to contact Chrysler (not moss motors) by a telephone follow-up few weeks after. If indeed the engine is at fault, I strongly urge a recall to be made. Thank you for your support.

12 Engine Head Gasket Leaking problem of the 1997 Plymouth Neon

Failure Date: 06/05/2001

We were driving on the highway when the oil light came on. A few seconds later, the car started sputtering, acting like it was going to die. Engine light came on and the car died. After having it towed to a shop, they told us the motor was blown. We had it towed to another shop that confirmed that was the problem. They informed us of the head gasket problem and told us to contact Chrysler. Chrysler told us the car needed to be looked at at a dealership. Again the car was towed to rainier Dodge. They inspected the car and told us the car had thrown a rod, that was the problem, not the head gaskets. It will cost between 2500. 00 and 4000. 00 to put a new motor in the car. We feel that Chrysler is responsible and their dealer is only covering for them. We still owe 5900. 00 on the car and can't afford to put new motor in. When we asked the service dept at rainier why a car would throw a rod without any warning, the answer we rec'd was it could happen to anyone and they can guarantee that it was not the head gasket leaking that caused the motor to seize. Can you help?.

The head gasket on the Plymouth Neons is a major defect it also is a hazard to the enviornment leaking oil. The mechanic said this will leak again on the head gasket because the defect is the head gasket and fixing it is only for a short period in which the head gasket will leak again. We have repaired this for a sum of $650. 00 and will have to be done again according to our mechanic whick says the problem exists with the defect being the head gasket. The mfg. Was contacted and we gained nothing but aggrevation. This is a defect in my eyes seeing that even when this is fixed it will happen again and again because of its improper design. We have heard of numerous complaints about this defect yet the mfg. Is aware of the problem and will not recall because of the major cost envolved. Even when affecting our enviornment. Will nowhich was $650. 00 which will happen within a certain amount of time.
