1 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Plymouth Voyager

Failure Date: 05/20/2011

I have seen on certain Chrysler models, especially minivans, with the 2-pin floating caliper design that the surface of the steering knuckle where the brake pads ride wears away and can cause the affected wheel to lock up either during a stop or after the brake pedal is released. This is caused by the brake pads wedging in the groove. If this were to happen during a brake application, the vehicle could veer into oncoming traffic, causing an accident. I have also noticed that the mounting design (bolts and slide pins,) is flawed. The bolts are too short and do not make enough contact with the threads, especially after routine brake maintenance the holes can become stripped. Chrysler recommends a torque of 119 in/lbs or 16 ft/lbs (source: alldata 2011 llc,) although when torqued to specification, the bolt threads strip out. If the bolts were to be loose or ultimately fall off the vehicle, the caliper will ride on the inside of the wheel, making noise or locking the wheel during any driving maneuver; which can lead to a crash. Correction to the failing knuckle is simple if found early enough. The edges can be ground down to allow the pads to move smoothly, shims can be added to compensate for the removed material and a decent high-temperature brake grease should be used on the sliding surface. Correction to the caliper mounting hardware is thread repair with a helicoil set for 9mm bolts. It would be nice to have extended bolts available (metric grade 10. 9,) from the manufacturer. Too often than not I have seen these problems where brake maintenance is almost/over due.

2 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1998 Plymouth Voyager

Failure Date: 08/03/2005

Contact went to have brakes checked on 8-3-05, just a routine check, and the mechanic noticed that left front caliper bolts were incorrect and have damaged the steering knuckles. He told her the left front wheel was spinning inside the knuckles, within 7 months after purchasing the car had to replace the transmission. Also, the ignition switch was bad.

3 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Plymouth Voyager

Failure Date: 09/01/2004

Front and rear brakes are wearing out too soon on minivan. Got brake work done on 10/5/02, 11/5/03, 3/26/04, 8/3/04 and 9/4/04.

4 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Plymouth Voyager

Failure Date: 03/02/2003

On a 2000 Plymouth Voyager with 14 inch wheels (non-abs), when replacing the front brake pads I noticed that the brake caliper piston was cracked and chipped in numerous places at the outer edge and there were small pieces of the metal piston missing - the missing metal were the size of m&m's. No noticeable problem was detected with the brake pad backing or the rotor. No force was used to remove the caliper or the pad - so this must have happened just while in service. This was only on the passenger side.

5 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1998 Plymouth Voyager

Failure Date: 09/19/1999

Brake calipers are hanging up, destroying the brake rotors. Also and there is some grinding noise coming from vehicle.

6 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1997 Plymouth Voyager

At 25,000 miles the front brake calipers have prematurely worn out, cause unknown. Please give any further details.
