Plymouth Voyager owners have reported 20 problems related to differential unit (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Plymouth Voyager based on all problems reported for the Voyager.
: the contact stated a leak was noticed under the transmission when the vehicle was parked. A local independent repair mechanic replaced a shaft seal in the transmission. However, that did not remedy the leak. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair transmission shop were it was determined the transmission needed rebuilt and the differential needed replaced.

While driving approximately 45 mph, the consumer heard a noise and tried to shut the vehicle off. The consumer hit the guard rail to get the vehicle to stop and the transmission went out. The differential cracked and broke the axle which went into the transmission. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop. After the transmission was remedied, 4 days later, the seals leaked.
The differential pin broke inside transmission. As a result, transmission had to be replaced.
We own a 1999 Plymouth grand Voyager. At approximately 69,000 miles while driving approximately 35 mph the transmission literally blew up and the vehicle came to a sudden stop and nearly left the road. A part had broken off from the inside of the differential and blew a 6 inch by 3 inch hole through the casing between the differential and transmission. The casing debris that blew into the transmission completely mangled the transmission. No one was injured only because of the slow speed of the car at the time. We have photographs of the transmission and the mechanic's report.

Vehicle not wanting to switch gears. It goes very slow until finally it switches over. The oil was leaking out of the van. The oil leak was repaired. As for the transmission, it all started off when it would slow by itself. Then it gradually got worse. On 02-12-03 I had taken it in to get checked for a oil leak and the problem with the gears not shifting. I was told I needed transmission service, to replace the valve cover gasket, and to replace the transmission output shaft seal. I did the repair that was supposed to fix the problem but of course it didn't. I took it in to the dealer and they found nothing wrong with the gears. But said a fuel injection cleaning, throttle body cleaning, and a tune up would fix the problem. This was done on March 26, 2003. They replaced the throttle body gasket and spark plugs. They did find a leak in the head gasket. They had to replace cylinder head gasket, water pump and timing belt. In November of 2000 the front pump seal was leaking, pan gasket leaking, side cover leaking, differential cover leaking, and rear main oil seal leaking. They removed the transaxle, removed and replaced the rear main seal. A few months ago the engine light started coming on when gears wouldn't shift. And it got worse everyday. Now the engine light is on all the time. I took it into aamco on 04-23-2004 to get it checked out. They said it wasn't safe to drive so they had to tow it to their station. It passed all the equipment testing and was told it may just be the spark plugs. So I replaced the spark plugs that day. It ran well for a little while. Then it started again. I had to stop driving my vehicle because it is a potential danger to my family. It would go very very slow when I was trying to cross the road. And with on coming vehicles on both sides we could easily get into a major collision. I have tried to talk to the Chrysler but they refused to help me. And at this point I still don't know what is wrong with it.
While coming to a stop the van made a loud noise, jarred as though hitting a large hole then stalled. The van could be restarted but would not engage when put into gear. The differential pin came out of the carrier assembly and broke transaxle case in three places. The repair took 2 1/2 weeks. Dt.
The consumer's son was driving when the transmission failed. Massive amounts of metal was found inside of the differential. The transmission would only go in reverse. The sliding door motor failed and the driverside power locks on the driver side slide door had become inoperative. The consumer requested reimbursement. Scc.

Consumer stated the transmissions differential blew causing it to come right through the side of the transaxle case, this incident occured while driving on a local highway, there was an extremely loud noise that came from under the van as it shook forcefully, then there was an oil substance that covered the windshield, consumer is requesting reimbursement from the manufacturer stating this is a possible defect.
While traveling at approximately 45 to 50 mph there was a bang that came from front of vehicle. Vehicle rolled approximately 10 feet and stopped. A dealership stated that differential pin dropped out of transmission which caused this defect.
Planetary gear in transmission failed. Dealership has given consumer no reason for failure. Please provide any additional information/attachments.
Differential came apart and knocked a whole in transfer case, causing car to stall and die at 70 mph.
My spouse was taking off from the bank when she heard a bang. Auto dealer determined pin broke and went through wall of differential. Auto would not move. Contact with transmission company gained information that they have gotten 1 of these incidents per week. Compnay called was transmission supply in eau claire, wis. I would think this to be a major concern should this happen going at high speeds. Please inform me of any information available or record this incident. Chrysler did offer to pay all but $500 dollars even though my warranty went off approximately 6 weeks ago. Thanks.
At 20 and 50k miles, the consumer noticed that while making a turn and placing the vehicle in reverse a grinding noise was heard. The vehicle would not shift into reverse. The dealership stated the transmission needed replacement. Vehicle is now on its third transmission. Both transmission failure were due to a broken differential pin. A new transmission was placed in the vehicle at 22k and 55k miles by the dealer. The transmission was also flushed.
From what I understand this is a common failure in these vans. This pin in the transmission breaks and shoots through the transmission housing. This is a manufacturing defect that Chrysler should correct. This is going to cost me $2000. 00. Who's to say this won't happen again. Recall these vans and fix this problem!.
Vehicle experienced catastrophic failure of the forward differential, which exploded, scattering metal shavings throughout the transmission.

While trying to get van out of a parking spot van would not go into gear at first. After the van was parked in driveway for about one hour and when starting van again, van would not move. Van was taken to a transmission specialist. The planetary gear was replaced. Consumer was informed that Chrysler changed the design of the planetary gear after this vehicle was made, to account for the problems it had been causing.
Consumer heard a loud noise from the vehicle, when the consumer pulled over, a pink substance had leaked from the vehicle. On each occasion , the transmission had gone out, and a loud noise was heard. The transmission differential failed. The keepler pin was found not properly hardened. Scc.
Transmisson failed and the rear differential exploded, causing a loss of control.
Problems with 1999 Plymouth Voyager expresso transmission. The pin came out the differential and it cracked the case.
Consumer stated that while driving there was a "boom" noise that came from the engine compartment and engine stalled. Vehicle was inoperative, had to be towed. Mechanic said that differential pin had come loose, damaging the motor in transmission.
