We just had our van into the dealer ship last week it was surging while I was driving it. The dealer said it was the transmission and fixed the problem. Three days later it was doing the same thing and also shifted into neutral while I was driving on the freeway at 65 mph. I had my one year old with me at the time. It was a very scary experience. Had we known that Chrysler had and still has defective transmissions we never would have purchased this vehicle. In looking on the internet I have seen many complaints about Chrysler's transmission as far back as the 1989 model. How can they get away with this for so long? I consider this van to be a lemon. Unfortunatly the lemon law states that the problem has to have happened within the first 18,000 miles. What recourse do I have in returning this obvious lemon?.

Van kepting surging. Dealer said it was the transmission.
On a family trip to north carolina, the transmission of our 1996 Plymouth Voyager lost third gear traveling in heavy traffic along I-95 south of richmond, va. Luckily my son was able to pull off the side of the road and travel a few miles without third gear to a Chrysler repair shop. Since the shop was closed we had to rent a van to complete the trip and return on Monday to find out what happened. The repairs were not covered under a warranty because Chrysler gave me a 6 year/100,000 mile warranty. Although it has been 7 years since the purchase, the 57,300+ miles on the product does not reflect the 'minimum' mileage the transmission is good for. Needless to say we paid for the entire cost of the transmission repair as well as the cost of the rental cars needed to complete the trip and the cost of hotel rooms necessary to stay over night and to make a 350 mile return trip to pick up the van. The van was not driven extensively or driven harshly during the 7 years I have have owned it. There is absolutely no reason the transmission of this car should lose an entire gear this early its life espcially if the prodcut is sold as a reliable, family-safe vehicle. My question is what further actions can I take to seek reimbursment to defray the repair costs from the Chrysler corporation? please advise. Thank you. Linda l. Klinksiek.

While driving instrument panel will start to act up, speedometer will start to jump up and down in speed, and anything else. Then, vehicle will shut off without any notice. Contacted dealer.
Speedometer will drop to zero at any speed. Then, it popps back up to speed traveling at. Please provide any further information.
It is June of 2003 and the car is currently in the shop again for the transmission problem. It has had a power steering pump failure, serpentine belt failure times 5 and now a computer problem. I have contacted chrystler corp at least 5 times regarding the problems with this car. Their answer is well, if you don't like the care trade it in.

The belt tensioner failed, there was a recall on the clock spring which had broken, the transaxle pan side converter and the steering pump had rusted.
Failure of this part caused the vehicle to violently shift to 1st gear at 45 mph. The speedometer and odometer did not read. Vehicle had to be towed. Dealer stated that this part should not have failed on such a new vehicle. I purcahsed an extended warranty, which covers powertrain, electrical and standard instrument cluster, but was told that this sensor was not covered, eventhough it controls the instrument cluster. I paid $130 for repair. If this had happened in traffic or at highway speed I shudder to think how the vehicle would have reacted, since the sudden, unexpected downshift caused the vehicle to lurch forward violently. The dealer's service rep said that this part did not usually fail, but that in the past month they had replaced more than usual. I have only had this vehicle for 7 months and it has already left me stranded. Overall, my dealer and service rep were very polite and friendly. Please let me know your expert opinion about this incident.
The speedometer and rpm reader inoperative. Nlm.
Consumer stated the speedometer failed.
This vehicle can be put into gear without pressing on brake. Isn't this a required safety feature of new vehicles?.
