Subaru Impreza owners have reported 130 problems related to engine and engine cooling (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Subaru Impreza based on all problems reported for the Impreza.
The vehicle's engine displayed an "check engine" light, the cruise control indicator light flashed on and off continuously when not engaged at a standstill, and the vdc vehicle dynamics control off indicator remained lit. This occurred while the vehicle was parked and these indicators came on when the engine was switched on. When driving a noticeable decrease in engine performance and louder exhaust noise was evident. Took vehicle to dealer and subsequently was informed that there was a complete four valve engine failure that would require a complete overhaul of engine at an extremely high cost. The safety issue would be if this had occurred at highway speeds potentially losing control of vehicle causing accident. This was the second time this has occurred with this particular vehicle. When purchased new in 2016 after roughly 38k miles engine failed and had to be rebuilt at dealer cost. This current failure occurred at just under 101k miles, so this second failure occured at approximately 60k miles after first repair. This indicates to me that: 1. Poor engine quality, 2. Poor repair parts, 3. Poor quality control at the factory, 4, poor repair service. As of writing of this complaint vehicle is still at the dealer undergoing repair which according to service rep will take a few days. We believe the cost of this repair should lay at the feet of Subaru for producing a defective engine.

Check engine/break/abs/traction control/ cruise control and at oil temp lights are all on. Now my back break lights are not working! car jerks at times. Read on a few forms that this was an issue for Subaru Imprezas 2012 and up. There was also a recall on this issue on April 2019. Please have this recalled again.

I own a 2014 Subaru Impreza wrx which was still under warranty(48xxx miles) I’ve been having issues with my vehicle where at times it shuts off on me whenever I come to a complete stop. I’ve taken it to a Subaru dealership multiple times and they always told me “they couldn’t replicate the problem or didn’t find any issue. ” I was on my way back home from work when all of a sudden on the freeway the car completely turned off while driving highway speed. I was able to safely pull over on the highway and tried turning the car back on and the check engine light was on with a flashing cruise control light, I turned it off and had it towed home. I read the code and it came out to be a p0011 and a p0021. I took it to a Subaru dealership that was close to me and was told they couldn’t find any problem and I insisted they check the car again and they said they did an inspection of the car and there wasn’t any problems. I was on my way to work as I began to accelerate the car stalled I turned the car on thinking I stalled the vehicle but a rattling sound became loudly audible. I checked my oil to see if it was low on oil but the dip stick still showed it had lots of oil. But I believe the engine is damaged. I’m tired of taking it to the dealership and being told there isn’t a problem when there’s in fact a major problem. I read through a lot of forums and bulletins and a lot of people have been having the same issues and I don’t know why there was never a recall to fix the faulty issues these vehicles have which is a horrible engine that is a ticking time bomb. This is a major issue and I believe this needs to be looked into.

My vehicle starts to shake and the engine acts like it is going to die when I hit around 50-60 mph. I cannot floor it and the vehicle will not let me go any faster then 60mph without it acting like there’s no fuel getting to the engine or something in that sense.

Was driving on I-70 in colorado going 60-65 mph uphill when all indicator lights came on and at (automatic transition) oil temp light began flashing. Check engine, hill assist, abs, and traction control lights all came on steady on. Had to pull over and had significant power loss during driving. Googled what at oil temp light meant and called a tow truck to take to my mechanic. Mechanic initially indicated it could be valve body problem which in his words is a "known issue with Subaru cvt engines. " code pulled was p2764. They ended up pulling the pan and draining fluid and found excessive metal built up on magnet in pan. This pan and headgasket were repaired less than 6k miles ago (October 2020) and at that time they said everything was in good shape so something drastic happened to cvt in less than a year. Mechanic unable to say what caused the excessive buildup in that time. Safety compromised as left on side of very busy highway waiting for tow - we were also concerned with whether or not car would overheat/catch on fire due to at oil being over 200 degrees. Problem confirmed by our mechanic and indicated that we need a full transmission replacement. No other warnings prior to this event. Maintenance is current and in 2018 performed recall service indicated by Subaru for valve spring issue.
2 differt items not sure if interconnected. Drove out of driveway and 3 blocks away the car was shaking violently and could not go more than 5 miles an hour. Was able to turn around and pull into driveway and the car died and would not start. Subarau dealer said it was the engine control module and replaced it for free. There was a recall done on the 2012 Impreza for same problem and mine is a 2014 with only 35,990 miles. Should be a recall for this model year also. This would have been very dangerous if I was on the freeway and I would hate to have it happen to someone else. A week before the car died I was having problems with my key frequently getting stuck in the ignition when it was in park. Had to pull the car in and out of parking spaces and play with steering wheel constantly to release the key. This was happening a lot. When the car was at the dealer for the ecm, I also told them about the key getting stuck. They said the problem was the release switch and replaced the switch guide plate for $564. I saw on line that this also happened with the 2012 Impreza which were recalled for the keys getting stuck in the ignition but they told me I had to pay since there was no recall. Apparently this problem is still continuing with the newer models.
The engine cooling system failed and put myself and my step-daughter at risk while driving on the freeway. When I got off the freeway, the vehicle stalled and I was unable to move the car. I got a tow to move the car. The electrical system was messing up for the windows and the radio, I was unaware of the other parts of the vehicle it was affecting. I just tolerated it for the time being. When my car overheated, the red warning temperature lights came on, the blue warning lamp that tells the temperature, and the tract warning lamp, as well as the check engine lamp. They did not turn on prior to this. I took the vehicle to john hine Subaru. The car went from being my most reliable, to this unpredictable incident.
The car accelerated without any input from driver. Driver did not apply pressure to gas pedal however the car still moves both forward an backwards. Car accelerated enough to drive over a speed bump without stopping, roughly 5 mph. Three videos were taken to document the issue. The event happen in a parking lot, the car was stopped at first however as soon as the driver removed pressure from brakes pafel, the car accelerated without input. The car didnt slow down even when turning, in fact the car appears to have speed up. Unable to up load video.

Due to the eco friendly soy base parts in Subaru vehicles, we have fallen victim to squirrels chewing on the wires underneath the hood causing extensive damage to the vehicle. This has happened twice within 6 months. Subaru stated this would not be covered under warranty and we have been left with the burden of the cost. This is not the first time that someone has reported such a problem, as a class action was filed 11/2017 in hawaii reporting the same issues with rodents and Subaru's soy based parts.
When starting the Subaru releases dark grey smoke in high quantities, and has been loosing power when speeding up.

Key locks into ignition and vehicle needs to be restarted and the shift moved from park position back to park position a few times before the key will release. I have seen many complaints online regarding this issue ie. Failing lock cylinder/park sensor problems. Will there be an investigation into this and a possible recall? my car has less than 50,000m on it.
Bought the car used 90k miles in 2017. It is now at 125,000 and the transmission has completely failed. The car is accelerating and reving even when decelerating. I took it to the mechanic and was told I need a total replacement. I drive less than 20 mi/wk with the occasional roadtrip. This car should have lasted for many years but, this problem is known given that Subaru has offered extended warranties in regards to this transmission failure.

Intermittent loss of power at 2000 to 3000 rpm is getting worse and worse. I've taken it to my local Subaru dealer 8 times to address this issue and they have denied anything I've reported. They've had technicians on rides with me but I can't recreate something that is so intermittent. It seems to happen more in hot weather but I can safely say ac isn't the cause. Although my car isn't a crosstrek, the motor in one is exactly the same as mine. I suspected it was due to a recall repair that hadn't been performed but ive had both of my recalls done but my dealer never reported it to Subaru of America. The name of my main dealership is hine Subaru of temecula. . Read more...

Car caught fire on the morning of Sunday, January 5, 2020 while stationary in a parking lot. The car had been stationary for approximately 12 hours. The attending fire department felt the fire started in the engine compartment, and consumed the entire car by the time it was extinquished. The car was a total loss. The car ran perfectly until then, and had it's routine 1st service by a Subaru dealer around 5,000 miles. More photos are available.
My wife and I were driving from California to colorado last Saturday, and our car stopped running halfway across utah. A valve spring blew a hole in our ignition and we had to get our vehicle towed 50 miles to the nearest car shop. My wife later found out that their was a recall on the vehicle for that exact same issue. I contacted Subaru this morning about the recall and they said that I would have to get it towed to the nearest Subaru dealership to get assistance. Moreover they stated that because of my high milage it will depend whether or not they provide some coverage for the damages. My wife and I purchased the vehicle last year from heuberger motors, and were never informed about the recall. The vehicle is currently still being held by the towing company in utah, furthermore I'm currently stationed in fort carson colorado about 600 miles away.
Tl-the contact owns a 2014 Subaru Impreza. The contact stated that the vehicle would not start up even after replacing the battery. The vehicle was towed to the dealer ciocca Subaru 4611 hamilton blvd, allentown, PA 18103 (610) 395-3745 diagnosed that the engine seized and they disasembled the engine. The dealer then towed the vehicle to the original repairing dealer faulkner Subaru harrisburg 3233 paxton st, harrisburg, PA 17111 (717) 564-4545 who diagnosed the issue and found a broken valve spring in cylinder 3 that caused the engine to seize. The cylinder and piston were damaged. They replaced cylinder with an updated cam carrier and valve springs and front cover with updated cam shaft sensors due to oil contamination and the short block assembly. The manufacturer initially offered to pay $5,000 then after negociations stated they offered to pay everything but $600. The contact feels that they should not have to pay anything. The contact paid the difference for now but now wants to see about contesting having to pay anything. For the repairs. The failure mileage77,794. Tf.
Motor went out with 72000 miles while on the highway driving. Transfer case bearings shot. Power steering rack done and firewall has cracked for a 2nd time. Subaru are probably the most unsafe vehicles on the road.

I was involved in an accident on I-10 on 11/27/2019 at 2 pm. I was traveling at 60- to 65 mph and hit a SUV that had stopped in the left hand lane. The airbags did not deploy ( passenger or driver side) I have reported this to Subaru and so far they have not been helpful. I received contusions from my right hip to my left clavicle but no broken bones.
Factory recall for a valve spring and brake lamp switch replacement was completed on sept. 25, 2019. The car engine caught on fire while I was driving on October 18, 2019. I was stopped at a red light on a city street. The police and fire departments were called to put out the flames. The fire marshal was present to document and take photos. My car was towed. I understand this has happened to cars involved in the recall.
Cvt transmission failure, while vehicle was moving on highway.
While under warranty, took my vehicle to a Subaru dealership as I was having problems with the check engine light coming up and having no power. I was told they couldn’t replicate the problem. I drove home and on my way home my motor failed and wouldn’t start.
Tl- the contact owns a 2017 Subaru Impreza. The contact stated that when attempted to accelerated, the vehicle lost power. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to her residence. No warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was later taken to heritage Subaru owings mills dealer, (9808 reisterstown rd, owings mills, MD 21117, (888) 553-0026) where the technician replaced the battery. However the failure recurred but was not taken back to the dealer and was not repaired. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 19v743000 (electrical system) the manufacturer was not made of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 9,500. Aw.
I adujsted steering wheel and tried to start the ignition and no crank, no lights on dash and car windows wont work. This car is well taking care of at Subaru dealership only. Please help.
After 7 weeks and multiple cosmetic attempts to repair the damage they did to my car I am still driving an unsafe car that smells of gas. All of this occurring after a faulty recall repair (that they do not deny) that nearly caused a multi car crash on rt495. What I want from patrick motors/ Subaru of America: I want my car repaired as soon as possible to the satisfaction that the car is not dangerous to drive. Can you help me!.
I received notification of 2 safety recalls for my vehicle: Subaru recall wty-84 (NHTSA id 18v-772) and Subaru safety recall wue-90 (NHTSA recall id 19v-149. ) I purchased my car on the island of o'ahu and live on the island of moloka'I. Servco Subaru will not pay for my car to be shipped by barge for repairs. Since the valve springs affected are a defect in the engine upon manufacture, I feel that I should receive reimbursement for the cost of shipping. My budget is tight and this will be a hardship.
Received recall notice on faulty valve springs and was told by dealer it would be at least one year before they could make the repair. This timeframe is unacceptable considering the risk of engine malfunction I am assuming while waiting. Why would you allow manufacturers to push out critical safety repairs that far out?????.
2009 Subaru with less than 100,000 has a head gasket linking onto catalitic converter. Had same problem with 2005 Impreza with 95,000 miles . When I bought 2009 I wait was told problem had been resolved. Obviously not ! now I have to pay 1,600 dollars to have it repaired. Not happy with Subaru, will not buy another one.
The O2 sensor was replaced by resale dealer, after filling car with gas the check engine, traction control, and flashing cruise control light came on. Sensor was rechecked by dealer, and it is okay, codes wiped and reset. Car was filled with gas, lights came back on after commuting back home. Drove until there was 1/4 tank left, lights went off, filled back up with gas all the lights came back on. Sensor still tests back as the problem, but the sensor is okay.
Takata recall and safety recall wue90 NHTSA campaign: 19v149000 brake lamp switch. On April 4th, 2019 I called multiple dealers for this recall and the takata recall and they could not get me in until may 11th for airbag and the brake recall they do not have parts yet for it and the cars brake light is on. The last week and a half the brakes have been goofy and light illuminated which is part of the recall. Monday while driving on the highway at 55mph the rear passenger tire blew. Car has been towed because it appears part of the abs system has broke and pierced the brand new tire!.
