Takata recall: please note shift level gear control locks when car is turned on, in park, foot on brake. The traction control sensors, emergency brake sensors, and hill sensors turn on when this happens. The gear locks and the car will not turn on or off completely when these sensors are on. It will only turn off when the brake has been applied for so long. This has happened on numerous occasions and places, parking lots, driveways, and in areas when changing gears needs to occur and simple will not.

To whom it may concern,
I don't know if the NHTSA is someone that can help, but I figure I would try. I'm at my wits end. I have a 2007 Subaru wrx four door sedan. In April of 2008 I was driving my car in a 35 mile per hour zone and shifted my manual transmission from 2nd gear to 3rd gear. It popped out of gear when I began accelerating. Needless to say the car was undrivable and I had to have it towed to my nearest Subaru dealership, brown pontiac, Subaru here in amarillo TX. They tore the transmission apart to find that the third gear was "stripped" out and not covered under warranty. They said I had abused my car. It was and still is in great condition. I paid $908. 00, half the repair cost to get my one and only car out of the shop. Last Tuesday, 8-5-08, I was driving my car again. I shifted from 1st gear to 2nd gear. I could not put it in 2nd gear so, I didn't force it. I let the clutch out and reengaged it. I hear a bang in the transmission and it was over. Today, almost a week later, the same Subaru dealership, brown, called me and said 2nd gear was "stripped" out of it, just like 3rd gear. No one was injured in these incidents. There are several Subaru wrx owners with the same transmission problems. Soa "Subaru of America", refuse to think they may have a defect part or parts in there transmissions, or that their transmissions will fail. I'm facing a $3000. 00 repair bill. I have driven my car 4 months and about 7000 miles. Please help us!.

I started to come home one day and the car would not go into gear I had it towed by road side service and reliable Subaru in springfield, mo. Said it would have to have a new transmission and after getting a hold of Subaru they said it would not be covered under warranty due to driver error. I ask them to prove it was driver error and they said it was impossible to determine that. But usually when the transmission was heated up it was driver error. I replied if it was low on transmission fluid would it not heat up and he said sure it would. I had the car 3 months when this happened with 5200 miles on it. Never did I ever drive the car in a hard way. I am out now 5200. 00 on a new transmission. Plus 23,000. 00 on the car. I will never buy a Subaru, agin.
On July 4, 2005, I got a grinding sound while trying to shift into 2nd gear after pulling away from a light. I thought it was just me missing the shift. Several days later it happened again. I started to delay my shifts into 2nd gear. This same scenario started repeating itself several more times. Then the same problem started while trying to downshift into 4th gear. On November 14, 2005, I took the car to the Subaru dealer. I told them that I thought the synchronizers were bad in 2nd and 4th gears. The next day, the dealer called and told me the synchronizers were bad, as well as the 2nd and 4th gear sets, and the cost would be $2,900. 00 to repair it. He said that they had determined that the damage was due to "driver abuse", and was not covered under the warranty. He told me that he would contact the manufacturer and see what could be done. Two days later, Subaru said they would repair the transmission with no charge as a good will gesture, but not as an item covered under the warranty. They did the repair. I have found that my situation is not unique in the 2002 thru 2005 Subaru Impreza wrx and sti . Subaru dealers are denying warranty repairs for these two Subaru models, claiming "driver abuse". This problem needs to be investigated. My theory is that when turning the cars and shifting, there is twisting in the drivetrain that is bringing the synchronizers in contact with the transmission case causing the initial damage. The sensor's will then not align the gears properly and then the grinding starts. The more the car is driven, the more the sensor's are damaged, and, thus, the more the gears grind. The point is that all subsequent damage caused by the damaged sensors, due to faulty design, should be covered by the warranty. Subaru needs to be investigated concerning this problem. Subaru has put redesigned, stronger synchronizers in the manual transmissions of their 2006 wrx and wrx sti models.
