Entire underbody of car is rusting out, tail gate already had 2 body repairs but keeps rusting out. Many parts at just 150k were already replaced due to severe rust- most suspension parts, transmission cooling lines, exhaust , skid plates all failed. Brake calipers failed 4 times in in 6 years.

Only a few months after complete front brake replacement:rotors, calipers, pads, when braking at high speed downhill on good highway, the vehicle began vibrating strongly. Stopped at mechanics to have it checked. I had the tires balanced and rotated. Left front brake rotor was extremely hot, diagnosed as warped rotor. Replaced under warranty, caliper and rotor again. Now only a few thousand miles later the vibration is back again. This should not be. This has all happened within the past 15000 miles. Something more is wrong that is causing the brakes to malfunction but I don't see what it is.

I have gone through 2 sets of front brake calipers on my 2008 Toyota 4runner. It is a common issue where over time, the calipers will seize up and stick on. The only way to tell that there is an issue is either by touch, smell, or feel. Touch, because the rotors get to be over 250 degrees and they cannot be touched. Smell, because the smell of burning brake pads is present feel, because there is a loss of braking. Other than these indications, there is no notice of seized calipers until it is too late. This is a common issue and has happened with most 4runner owners that I talk to. I'm surprised that this has not become an issue.
Frame is extremely rusted, it just flakes off and after inspecting the joints am afraid that it will soon become a safety hazard also the brake calipers become in-op (frozen) have replaced the 2 front calipers 3 times and the 2 rear calipers twice.

Brake calipers keep seizing & need to be replaced. 09/10/2018 07/24/2014 04/17/2013 04/13/2013 06/18/2012.
Continuous brake caliper issues with then locking up causing them to prematurely wear out rotors and pads. Now with the cause of this issue, lost brake pressure all together almost causing me the driver create an accident in an intersection that could have been a devastating outcome. The vehicle only has 155000 miles, this should never have happened, I've already paid it off pocket alot of money for the brake caliper issue that I could have bought a newer vehicle. This needs to be investigated closely.
Tl-the cotnact owns a 2003 Toyota 4runner, the contact stated while having routine maintenace was informed there was execessive rust on the frame and several holes. There were no warning lights illuminated. Additioanlly, the calipers were sticking and the oil pan was rusted however the contact completed the repairs. The vehicle was taken to ramey Toyota 135 frazier dr, princeton, wv 24740( 877) 825-2186 where diagnosed the frame needed to be replaced. The vehcile was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage 55,000. Ap.
My 2006 Toyota 4runner limited has excessive rust corrosion throughout the undercarriage of the vehicle including but not limited to the frame, suspension, brakes, wheels, exhaust system and bolts/bracing. Since purchasing the vehicle, I have had to replace both front axles due to excessive rust at the recommendation of both the dealership and a third party mechanic. While driving, the skid plate detached from underneath the vehicle and was dragging beneath the car after the metal on the plate rusted out around the bolts. Similarly, the heat shield detached while driving on the highway after the bolts rusted out. When I replaced the front brakes (pads & discs), I was forced to purchase brand new calipers because the current calipers were so rusted and seized and the mechanic could not reattach them. I have continued to use Toyota dealerships for scheduled maintenance and the consensus has been as follows: sell the 4runner because it is excessively rusted would be a money pit to repair. Currently, the dealership has recommended I replace the steering rack and pinion due to leaks caused by rust. Moreover, the vehicle has duel exhaust leaks in both exhaust manifolds due to excessive rust. On multiple occasions the dealership told me they could not perform the work because of excessive rust. It has cost me thousands to repair and maintain, all of which is a result of extensive rust. The suspension and frame, including the shocks, struts, and bolts are excessively rusted and I have been urged to repair or sell the vehicle by multiple mechanics and dealerships, though the cost to do so would far exceed the cost of the vehicle. All of the aforementioned is detailed in paperwork from the dealership and supplemented by paperwork from third party mechanics here in san diego. The vehicle has 90k miles on it and has followed scheduled maintenance meticulously.

Front brake caliper pistons seized up causing me to go through a stop light. See enclosed video. Please review all the complaints regarding Toyota 4runner caliper pistons seizing up. This is a serious design defect that requires your immediate attention.
Brake calipers seize often. I have been through 12 different calipers in 160k miles. The frame has an alarming amount of rust for a vehicle which I have taken very good care of.
My front brake calipers continue to freeze or seize and causes the brake pads to stick to the rotors. This is the third time this has occurred since I owned the truck. Recently, upon replacing the both front calipers, brake pads, and rotors, after bleeding the brakes the brake system now only worked in the front brakes and not the rear brakes.
I have had two incidents of brake calipers failure. Under 50k I had a front driver side caliper fail. Then again at 99k the rear passenger side caliper failure. Toyota has a major issue with their brake caliper design on 4-runners. Toyota should extend their warranty, I always bought Toyota's, but never again after this last incident. Toyota does not build cars like they use to.

Noticed after just purchacing a used 4runner fro a Toyota dealer ship that my brakes seem to be making a lot of noise. Went to my mechanic and he told me that the front calipers on both sides of the car were frozen due to rust and that he has noticed this issue with multible sequoias and 4runners. Had to have the whole brake system repairs costing me over 1000 dollars.

Front caliper seize up l/f and r/f 3 incidents 11/2012 02/2015 06/2015.
While driving at approximately 50 mph and pressing the brakes for a sudden stop, the 4-runner lurches to the left, and then, when the brake is released, back to the right. I was on a trip and was lucky enough to get in to a Toyota dealer on Saturday. The service department told me I had two frozen pistons in the brake calipers, and the rear slides were not working properly. I had to replace the calipers, pads and rotors on all four wheels 2 years ago for frozen calipers. The warranty for that repair was 1 year, so I have to pay another $1200 to make the car safe to drive once again, after having spent $2000 2 years ago for the same problem. The history of this problem is widely known and Toyota should either extend the warranty on these parts, or fix the problem permanently and issue a recall. This is a safety issue, as the car lurches from side to side, and especially in the rain or when towing a trailer, is quite dangerous.
Tl - the contact owns a 2005 Toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while replacing the brake pads he noticed that both front calipers were not working properly. The contact decided to replace the calipers. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was repaired. The VIN was not available. The failure and current mileage was 50,000. Pmb.
There is a design flaw in the 04 4runner. The brake calipers rust out, and freeze, sieze, and need to be replaced any time the brake pads need to replaced. This also damages the rotors. Today, I had to overhaul the entire front end braking system, including pads, rotors and calipers. This is the second time I have had to go through this with the vehicle, and had all new parts installed 2 years ago, and the total miles on the vehicle is 56k. Toyota should be held responsible for this, as an internet search has turned up many posts for this exact problem.
I brought my car in for regular service and new brake pads and rotors. I was told one of the brake calipers on the front wheels was frozen. If the brake caliper is frozen, then the car has significantly reduced stopping power. There was no engine light indicating the problem. Multiple people have complained about calipers on the 4 runner. Please conduct an investigation and seek a response from Toyota.
2003 Toyota 4runner has 3 faulty calipers 2 on front and one on the rear. The caliper uses a dual piston and the interior lower piston is the one that failed on both front calipers. This issue is know to thousands of Toyota owners who inquire (its common knowledge among those who own them. ) the fact that both failed at the same time was incredibly dangerous I live in the mountains and losing both front brakes simultaneously is cause for great concern my safety is at risk as well as the safety of my passengers and everyone else. I am not sure why it has taken soo much effort from us (the owners of said vehicles and therefore caliper) to get this looked into. The calipers are of a faulty design and will fail prematurely putting human lives at risk. What more do you need? a person to die before this becomes credited information? just check out t4r. Org to find any number of identical claims.
Front brake calipers had to be replaced because they were frozen.
Left front brake caliper extremely rusted and noticed squeaking from same. Also extremely dirty rims from brake dust, replaced with non ceramic pads, but no other rims showed same amount of grit. Took in for service and informed that all other pads had 20% life and left front caliper outside lower piston was seized as well as unserviceable bleeder valve leaving no other option than to replace with caliper. Now, not one week after replacing caliper, new one is already rusting while all others look fine.
Took vehicle in for front brake replacement at 121,679 miles. First set of front brakes were replaced at 70,452 miles. Tech called to inform me that front calipers were frozen and would require replacement. Seems to be a relatively common occurrence for high mileage 4 runners. Same time had right axle boot replaced as well. $1,118. 00 for the whole job! of course I almost keeled over but had to have the work done, and wanted dealer to perform the work so I wouldn't have issues later if anything went wrong. Have had all work done at this dealer and they've stood behind all their work, but was still a bit disappointed that the front calipers were shot. Car has always been garage kept, and kept clean, inside and out. In fact, still looks like a new car.
I had a new break pads and rotor's installed at 50,000 miles,at 70,000 miles I discovered that the front lower brake caliper piston had frozen. It was the same for both sides. Took it into the shop, and they said the same thing. Had to have the caliper, break pads, and rotors, replaced on both sides for a total of $724. . Read more...
Heavy vibration noticed when attempting to brake at speeds above 40mph. A reduction in braking feel and power was also noticed. When I went to examine the brakes, I found that both of the front brake calipers had frozen lower pistons. Had to replace both front calipers and rotors as well as brake pads. Found this to be a very common problem on 4th generation Toyota 4runners. . Read more...
When I tried replacing my brake pad, I noticed that the front caliper piston is frozen and I could not retract it. I ended up replacing my front caliper on both sides due to this. Both front driver side and front passenger side caliper is frozen. 1 piston on each caliper. I believe this is a safety issue and should be addressed quickly to avoid future accident. I have my receipts when I replaced it if you need it. Thank you.
Lower inboard front brake caliper pistons on both sides of the vehicle corroded to the point of being frozen and non-functional leading to excessive braking distance and wear of brake components. Calipers are non-rebuildable and had to be replaced with remanufactured calipers by raybestos. Brake pads and rotors damaged to point of needing to be replaced also.
While driving front abs does not seem to be activating. Braking distances worsened as my 03 4runner was driven. It turns out a piston in the brake calipers had frozen costing over $650 in repairs to replace the calipers. This is a constant problem. . Read more...
When I went to change my brake pads, I noticed that the front had hardly been worn down. I had previously noticed that I needed more room to stop, and my rate of deceleration had lessened. I discovered that my inner lower pistons on my front calipers had rusted and frozen. A quick search online and on a forum I am part of (t4r. Org) showed that this has affected numerous others. The design of the calipers caused the inner lower pistons to freeze up. This is an extreme safety hazard. I have not had this issue with the aftermarket calipers that were installed by my local shop.
Had to replace right front caliper at 55,000 miles after it froze up after new pads were installed--it was done by a local garage by a former Toyota tech. --had it checked by a Toyota dealership at 57,000 miles and they said it was all good--still did not feel right--had it checked again by Toyota dealership at 66,000 miles and they said it was all good again--at 94,000 miles still not working very well and had it service by Toyota dealership which said it was fine--at 105,0000 miles both front calipers are frozen and needed to be replaced.
While driving I noticed that my front abs would not activate in an emergency situation. Braking distances became a lot longer. When I went to check my front brakes, I discovered that the front lower brake piston had frozen. It was the same for both sides. Took it into the shop, and they said the same thing. They wanted to replace the caliper on both sides for a total of $750. I did it mysef. . Read more...
I purchased my vehicle in February of 2010. I have had to replace both front brake calipers three times each. I had to have both rear brake calipers replaced twice each. Currently my right rear brake caliper is malfunctioning. All of my brake calipers have been seizing up and the cost to have them repaired is expensive. This is a serious safety issue along with an expensive one. I have read numerous internet complaints about this particular vehicle edition having brake problems and the company will not address it. Something needs to be done such as redesigning the brake calipers for this particular vehicle. Thank you.
Both front (left and right) caliper seized. Lower inside piston seized and would not retract. Replaced both calipers with re-manufactured parts from a1 cardone and less than 1 year and 5000 miles later both calipers have seized again creating wheel shake when braking above 40 mph. I am not the first owner of this vehicle and am not sure how many times in the past it has been an issue on this particular vehicle. Research on the internet has revealed that this is a very common problem for 4th generation 4runners. It seems like there is a deign flaw that has not been addressed by Toyota as I can find no "upgraded" replacement.
Took my 4runner to be serviced and I was told that both front brake calipers had frozen pistons. Because only one piston worked, they damaged the rotors and worn out the pads unevenly. This is a car that always serviced by dealer according to Toyota specifications with 67k miles. The job repair cost me $2000. Not only this extremely dangerous but also a very costly repair.
