2010 Toyota 4runner. Larger SUV so I thought loss of control in the snow twice was due to weight increase to new vehicle. Be more careful. But in the last two weeks I have had the front brakes lock up twice on dry pavement. This was not emergency braking but harder than normal. There was no pulsing of brakes as there should be for anti-lock systems. Contacted dealer and will take the SUV to the shop next week.

I have a 1999 Toyota 4runner that has the same problem with the abs as is being reported for the 2010 prius, only worse. When the abs kicks in on slick or uneven surfaces, the vehicle goes into a freely-floating mode for 5+ seconds. There is no braking capacity at all during that time and steering is difficult. The vehicle is completely out of control during that time. I have had multiple near-misses which would have resulted in serious harm to myself and others and a few incidences where I ended up running off the road (once into a ravine) or hitting median strips w/o involving other vehicles. I took my vehicle to the Toyota dealer twice about this issue. Once I was told I was nuts, that the abs couldn't possibly behave that way; and the other time I was told that, "OH yeah, that's how abs works. " no examination or correction was offered. My strategy has been to always touch the brakes so gently that abs doesn't kick in, but this winters snowy weather has defeated this plan. Whenever I brake on a slick, snowy surface the abs kicks in no matter how gently I touch the brakes. Last week, I had an extremely harrowing close call when my vehicle went careening out of control into an intersection when another vehicle was passing through it. This was on a side street when I was moving very slowly and had begun the gentle braking at least 30' before the intersection. . . But the abs kicked in, and I could not stop before sliding into the intersection. (for the required field asking for the incident date, I'll give the date of this most recent near-miss, but there have been many incidents over the years. ).

This complaint concerns the new 2010 Toyota 4runner. There is an issue with the braking system and handling for this vehicle. Upon depressing the brakes, the pedal travels a considerable distance sounds squeaky and notchy and delays in stopping. The anti-lock brakes do not interact quickly and often times engaged at the very end of the brake distance and creates a very uncomfortable and unsettling feeling. The height clearance is also a concern because when cross winds hit the vehicle it creates a very unsettling feeling and causes the vehicle to sway and get under the vehicle making prone to loss control. That wind does not have to be excessive; the mildest of winds will cause a disruption. Several measures have been taken to have a local Toyota dealership review and address the issue and they have come back and stated that it operates according to specifications. No one other than Toyota knows of those specifications and they will not disclose them until enough people highlight this issue by complaining. To add further insult to injury, Toyota has placed an administrative hold on any repairs unless they sanction it. In one of the latest uses, I had a deer cross my path and I tried to stop and the vehicle kept moving along and the brakes grabbed after 12 feet. I missed the deer but I was forced to relive the issue of how faulty the brakes are for this vehicle. It reinforced the issues with the braking system. We need for Toyota to own up to this hidden defect. The electrical systems in these vehicles seem to control every operating aspect of the vehicle and that appears at issue as well. I am canadian resident a bought a 2006 Toyota 4runner sr5, which is a us vehicle import. When I went to brake 2 days ago the brake pedal sunk to the floor and the vehicle kept on going. I was about 3 inches away from driving into my house. Luckily was able to stop as I was going very slow. Have not driven the car since.

While driving down the freeway traffic started to slow. I applied pressure to the brakes but nothing happened. There was a loud clicking noise in the braking system and the car seemed to lurch forward. The car is now totaled. The same problem occurred a month before and my wife has experienced the problem as well.

On 7-4-2005. While driving about 35 mph at a 8 lane stop brakes were applied and they failed. No pressure was felt in the pedal, and the brake went to the floor. There were no warning lights on and no noise. There was almost an accident. Owner had the vehicle towed. There were no brakes all the way home. Owner drove very slowly, and used emergency brake to stop. Then the dealer called owner and reported no problems. Owner called Toyota, and they said there was nothing they could do. No other problems with vehicle before. Owner did want to take car back because it was not safe to drive.
I purchased a new 2003 4 runner from toms river Toyota. All service of the vehicle performed there. Over a year ago we complained low a low brake pedal. Dealer said nothing was defective. Recently dealer recommended rear brake service. Problem still not resolved. On last service visit the dealer advised me that Toyota issued a service bulletin requiring a pad spacer being installed. But now due the mileage being over the 50000 mile warranty, dealer requires >$ 250. Be paid by owner to repair this issue. No such service bulletins were found on this website search.

While applying brakes, a small bump was hit and the brake pedal went to the floor. The vehicle eventually stopped, but without the assistance of power breaks. This has happened on several occasions, so far without a collision. The vehicle has been taken to the dealership several times and they have been unable to find the problem.
In cold weather brakes do not work immediately after starting engine resulting in car backing up or moving forward when placed in gear. This occurs in spite of pressing hard on brake pedal. The brakes pedal feels like you are secure but they are not working. This is an accident waiting to happen.

When braking at any speed the brake pedal goes to the floor, causing extended stopping distance. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
While pulling our 1999 4-runner with 39,000 miles into a parking stall, the brake peddle went all the way to the floor without stopping, resulting in a minor accident with no injuries. A service technician (not from Toyota) examined the vehicle and nothing unusual was observed. However, during a road test, the peddle went all the way down again when he attempted to stop. He pumped the brakes and they "caught" and stopped the vehicle. A Toyota dealer has not been able to duplicate the problem. A field service representative from Toyota examined the vehicle today after which, we were called to pick up the vehicle. Other than a visual inspection and road test, Toyota hasn't done anything. I don't believe that I should drive this vehicle on the road but that's exactly what Toyota is telling me to do.
When coming to a stop & braking, car accelerated forward. This caused me to have an accident with much damage to the front of my car. This caused me to hit the building in front of me with extensive damage to the building. It was amazing part of the building did not fall down on the top of my car which would have caused me serious injury.

Consumer states that while driving over bumps anti lock brakes would shut off. Dealer notified.
As I was driving down a 4 lane highway, the steering wheel suddenly jerked out of my hands to the right. I was unable to turn the steering wheel back to the left to correct. The roads were wet from an earlier rain; there was no standing water, no pot holes, or other visible defects in the road. I was in the left lane, traveling about 60mph. The car spun out of control - doing 2 complete spins on the highway, then into the ditch on the right; hitting trees, flipping, hitting more trees, and finally coming to a halt straddling the ditch perpendicular to the highway. Since there was no visible defects in the road that would have caused the steering to act like that, I'd like to know if there is any mechanical problem which would have caused the steering wheel to jerk so hard to the right and keep me from being able to correct it. I've been told that perhaps the front right brake locked up, the tie rod broke, or some kind of steering defect. Please let me know what I should look for.
While driving at highway speeds it became necessary to take evasive maneuvers. When I slammed on the brakes I did not feel the abs engage. I lost control of the vehicle and hit a guardrail. When this occurred the vehicle rolled front over back and the airbags never deployed. This concerned me. How can a vehicle roll over and the airbags never deploy?.
Front wheels would lock up when brakes are applied in a sudden stop on wet condition road. Appointment has been made for the dealer. Feel free to provide any further information.
I was driving around a curve at about 25 to 30 miles per hour speed on a slightly wet road. When I applied brakes, the vehicle skidded out of control and hit the divider wall on the passanger side and rolled over.
When applying brakes at a sudden/ emergency stop vehicle would slide or skid before stopping. Dealer notified. Feel free to provide any further details on this matter.

Rear brakes bind to wheel even after release of brake pedal. Must put into drive and press on acclerator to release. When acclerator is depressed the brakes releases with a sudden jolt which causes rapid accleration and a safety hazard.
Intermittently when the brakes are applied pedal goes to the floor, resulting in extended stopping distance. The dealer has not been able to duplicate the problem.
When driving slow ly and applying the brakes and car goes over a bump, anti-lock brakes may or may not kick in. Consumer took his car to the dealership.
On a straight decent road I applied a brake. Suddenly my tire is locked w/ no steering. The road was partly covered by slushy snow and wet. Since the car is equipped with abs, I did not try to pump. As the result my car hit a snow bank and rolled over. The user's manual does not indicate abs may not work.
Anti rattle spring broke, causing noise.
Brakes become soft and parking brake has increased number of clicks to tighten-this has occurred at approx 11,000 and again at approx 18,000 miles; took to dealer at approx 11,800 initially with this complaint and they only inspected brakes (no adjustment)and said brakes look almost brand new. I had to return to dealer and have shop foreman drive the truck who then told mechanic to adjust brakes. Once again I am noticing brakes are soft and parking brake takes more clicks to tighten (approx 18,000). I contacted another dealer who told me that this is expected with Toyota 4 runners because they do not have self adjusting brakes. He said that I need to have the brakes checked and adjusted if necessary every 5000 miles (at an extra charge of 30. 00 dollars). I explained that they go out of adjustment very quickly and not at exactly every 5000 miles, therefore the dealer would not adjust them until I have a problem again which means I am spending time and money (besides the expected 5000 mile oil change/rotate tires) with a problem I feel may not be normal for a $32,000 dollar truck and should be covered under warantee or at least described as a common necessity to customers before purchase( nowhere in the owners manual does it state that brakes will need adjustment frequently due to not self adjusting).

Vehicle was moving about 5 miles per hour into a parking spot while brake pedal was being pressed , all of a sudden there was an instant engine surge which propelled the vehicle over the parking lot media and crashed into the rear of another car.
While traveling in snow and applying brakes, the braking system would not kick in, causing vehicle to slide into antother vehicle. Please provide further informaton.
While pavement is wet and when applying brakes vevicle would continue to travel, resulting in extended stoppiing distance. Dealer can't duplicate porblem . Please provide further informaton.
Owner has abs brakes. While applying the abs brakes pedal went to floor of vehicle, causing vehicle not to stop. Owner has taken vehicle to dealers for problem . Dealers can not duplicate problem.
While driving experienced abs brake warmup and violent vibration throughout vehicle upon braking.
The truck is equipped with abs brakes that when being driven in snowy conditions, the brake system performs erratic. The owner states that he would hear some sort of humming sound but the truck continues forward. The Toyota dealership did evaluate the brakes but no cause of performance was acknowledged. Please describe details ts.
