1 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2014 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 05/20/2019

When driving I have trouble stopping the vehicle. I had my brake pads replace in February, but this still did not help. My brake pedal will go all the way to the floor barely stopping the vehicle. I have taken it to two mechanics and both have concluded the master cylinder needs to be replaced due to a leak. Parts alone costing $2500 from Toyota.

3 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2017 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 12/13/2017

I pulled up to a stop light and applied the brakes. I stopped but while I was sitting with the brakes applied, my 4runner started rolling forward. I had to push the brake peddle to the floor to a point I could barely reach to get it to stop again. I took it to the dealership and they agreed the brakes were not acting right. They could see on the computer that something was wrong as well. They said I would need a new master cylinder on the 4runner. The vehicle is only 2 1/2 months old with 2500 miles. When I picked up the vehicle, they said they talked with Toyota and it was only the 2nd case of this happening in the us. The morning it happened it was around 30 to 35 f outside. When the dealership tested it they said they applied the brakes to stop and it slowly started moving forward after a few seconds like had happened at the stop light. They replaced the master cylinder and when I picked it up everything seemed to be working ok.

4 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/11/2017

While driving at approximately 30 mph on a city street, with my little girl in the vehicle, breaks failed and loud cabin alarm sound and abs, vsc and trac dash lights came on. We were close to home so we got it there into the garage applying emergency break and using shifter in order to stop and avoid crashing. Had vehicle towed to dealership twice as they said the fixed it after only having it 30 minutes and said the accumulator pump was blocked up. Came home, drove it twice and the one week later all the bells and whistles go off again. Had it towed once again and now being told that it will cost us $4000 to fix. Very odd Toyota goes from a thirty-minute charge and fix to a three-day process because they have to order part and cost us $4000. Supposedly the abs pump break master cylinder is bad and has to be replaced. I have read 1000s of posts and threads in blogs from Toyota owners with similar issue, and some that caused accidents. I had just come off the highway, so this could have caused a serious accident just minutes earlier. This seems to be a very common occurrence and Toyota is very aware of the situation but no recall. This situation merits an investigation by Toyota and a recall should be awarded before human life is lost in an accident. They should also find a better less expensive fix. Generations of my family have put our faith into Toyota vehicles and to be screwed like this is just not fair. The economy bailed car dealerships out when they were going under and they can't do the right thing taking ownership of this known issue. Will analysis my options when buying another Toyota.

6 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2007 Toyota 4Runner

The braking system vibrates and squeals when driving and braking. . . Told the abs/master cylinder system needs to be replaced at the cost of $3082. 25. Started noticing problems at about 128000 miles on vehicle. Doesn't seem right that there is a major malfunction/repair needed with such low mileage.

7 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2007 Toyota 4Runner

8 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2010 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 09/05/2014

I was making a left turn at low speed at a traffic light. Suddenly the abs, brake and traction control warning lights lit up on the dashboard. At the same time, a continuous, high pitched alarm sound went off. I came to a full stop at another traffic stop. At that point my foot was on the brake and the brake depressed to the floorboard. I placed the car in park and pumped on the brakes and they did pump back up. I parked the vehicle close by and had the car towed to the nearby Toyota dealership. They diagnosed the problem as a failed master cylinder and quoted me a price of $3000 including parts and labor for repairs. Both the dealership and Toyota stated that there were no TSB's or recalls currently on the vehicle.

9 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2005 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 12/08/2013

I was leaving my house and my brakes completely failed! foot to the floor and nothing happened. There was no warning or back up to help me stop. Luckily I was in my neighborhood and only ran into a neighbors yard (and did not hit any children). I had the car towed to a mechanic who told me the master cylinder was broken and needed to be replaced. After contacting Toyota, the parts dept acknowledged that this was a common issue, and then asked if I wanted the part (for a small fortune). Basically he said either you fix it, or don't drive the car anymore. In addition he compared the brake failure to a tv breaking! a tv?! a complete break failure puts not only the driver, but the general public in serious jeopardy. What has to happen for Toyota corporate to acknowledge this issue and issue a recall?.

Multiple dashboard warning lights came on but none prior to the brake failure. There were no symptoms whatsoever of the impending failure. The dealer says the master cylinder failed. There were no serious injuries, however, if this had occurred just moments before we would have been on the interstate driving 60+ mph!.

14 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2007 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 06/01/2008

Purchased pre-owned 4 runner ?certified? from russel Toyota 12/07 with approx 21k miles. Complained of unusual brake performance immediately but was told the vehicle was ?performing to factory specs? brake performance issues including aggressive stopping, stiff pedal, loss of pressure, and random ?anti-skid system? responses nearly caused a few accidents. On 3/14, approx 23k miles, complete brake failure, no pressure, accident avoided and coasted vehicle to a stop, pressure did not return. 4runner towed to dealer, master cylinder was ?internally leaking? and replaced. Symptoms continue and vehicle is completely unsafe. Numerous attempts have failed to re-produce the intermittent problem at the dealer and therefore the dealer keeps saying there is nothing wrong. Vehicle is unsafe and Toyota unwilling to help and referred us to ncds dispute resolution program or told us we can file a suit. This vehicle is unsafe and should be replaced. Breaks continue to fail/malfunction approximately 1 time per week. Dealer always says no problems found.

15 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 06/17/2007

First issue: the brake pedal has a buzzing that occurs with every stop, it' is severe enough that it alters the brake pedal pressure. Second issue: when hitting a bump while stopping the brake pedal loses pressure. Would seem to be a concern for Toyota, they first said they haven't heard of a complaint, and then said it was normal.

16 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2005 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/18/2006

2005 4 runner v8 had complete break failure at about 23000 miles. Vehicle failed to stop at intersection. Pulled vehicle into parking lot and the vehicle still did not stop. Emergency break had to be applied to slow vehicle down. Took vehicle to dealership and tests found that there was a malfunction in master cylinder. This could have been a very disastrous event. There is not warning on the vehicle when such a failure occurs.
