1 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2015 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 12/20/2018

At 20,202 the SUV's steering wheel would shake when brakes were applied. The dealer noted that the rotors were warped, glazed and had heat spots. Vehicle qualified for replacement brakes under warranty, replaced brake pads and rotors front only. Since repair, the front wheel started to shake again - dealer said to get new tires to solve problem. Got new tires at ~47,000. Problem still existed, and took to dealer for regular service and to address brake pulsation when applying pedal. The dealer, northridge Toyota, declared that "the pulsation is a wear or driving pattern issue" refusing to fix this obviously defective braking system. Recommending the same rotor and pad replacement at a cost of over $660. 00. Many documented complaints of this same problem on this NHTSA website.

2 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/15/2013

Vibration from braking causing very decreased vehicle control posing very increased accident risk. Toyota four runner 02 limited, recurrence of pulsing brake pedal and very high vehicle vibration when braking. This occurs after short or long mountain descents at normal / posted highway speeds under normal passenger loads (not hauling), clear dry conditions. This is the second time this low mileage vehicle has experience this issue. First time, the front rotors were replaced at the dealer by the previous owners expense under 60k miles. The vehicle is driven at most 7k miles a year. The problem has returned over and over and poses a serious hazard to occupants and other highway travelers. Searching the web, there are numerous complaints of warped rotors which Toyota dealers are saying is driver error / normal use. I have not driven this vehicle much and not hard. My use would qualify as normal highway travel. The vehicle was purchased by me in 2008 and I have replaced rotors every year. I have purchased the slotted rotors with ceramic as well as semi metallic with no benefit . Certainly the expense of again replacing rotors is concerning, but really, the amount of vibration and decreased control causes me to be very concerned for my, and others, safety. Even if the rotors are replaced, it seems very likely that the vibration and loss of control will return in a few thousand miles of normal use. I would like Toyota to admit their vehicles have faulty assembly which causes excessive wear on pads and rotors. I now just took it in again, and this will be the 4th set of rotors, pads and rear drums!.

3 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2010 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/12/2010

I will preface this notation with a statement that I am very familiar with the functionality of a motor vehicle. As months went on after I first purchased the said vehicle I began to notice that I would have to depress the brake pedal more and more to engage the braking system. Once deployed the brakes did bring the vehicle to a stop, albeit with a 'soft' pedal. I brought it to a local dealership and requested that they check the error codes as well as the brakes inc. Lines, pads rotors etc. . They stated that everything was within factory specifications. They measured the distance the pedal traveled while the vehicle was idle. I commented that when I first start the vehicle the initial activation of the brake pedal engages the brakes fairly well. It is after a few stops that one has to depress the pedal further to have the same feel that was noted upon the initial stop after the car was first started. I said he felt like the brakes needed to be bled. They complied with my request. They were ok for ~ 2 weeks. I once again brought the truck back to the same dealership and they stated that it was up to factory specifications. I am right back to where I was a year ago. I will note that it does feel better after a car wash and or it rains. I'm beginning to wonder if it's brake dust that's interfering with the contact with the rotor. There is not an unusual amount of dust on my rims though.

5 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2008 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 08/06/2009

The contact owns a 2008 Toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the vehicle accelerated unintentionally while driving 50 mph. She had to depress the brake pedal with such force that she destroyed the entire braking system. The dealer had to replace the entire braking system because the brakes were so hot that they destroyed the rotors and the pads. The vehicle is still at the dealer and the contact does not want to pick it up. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 16,000.

7 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1998 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/10/2007

I love my 1998 Toyota 4-runner sr5 - but I hate the expense of the braking system. In the 5 years that I have owned my vehicle I have had to completely replace the entire braking system pads, rotors, drums, cables etc four times. It is never just the pads. Every single time I've taken it in for a brake inspection - they always need to machine the rotors. And, no it is not my driving ability. Each time I have had to pay for this very expensive repair (400-600) the mechanics always say the same thing - "we see this all the time on these 4wd 4-runners - they just don't design the braking systems properly for this type of truck". Twice I have run off the road in order to avoid hitting someone in front of me because of complete failure, once while only going 20 mph. Toyota tacoma's appear to not have this type of problem - I think after thousands of dollars in brake system repairs and two very near accidents - someone at Toyota should evaluate this braking system and either offer an alternative or offer a warning to potential buyers.

8 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/02/2007

While I was driving my Toyota 4runnerand I stepped on the brakesand let off of the brakes I kept on making a thud sound as the faster I drive the louder it would make that sound and it had a burning smell to it so when I took it to the repair shop they told me that my brake pads where completely gone I had to get the rotors replaced the mechanic said the pistons in the caliber froze in the open position so that is why my brakes failed me.

9 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/01/2006

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota 4runner. While driving any speed, the brake pedal and the vehicle vibrate and pulsate when the brake pedal is depressed. The dealer has not inspected the vehicle. The contact replaced the brake pads, however, the problem continues to persist. The current mileage is 65,000 and failure mileage was 50,000.

10 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 02/23/2005

I had issues with the brake pedals ever since 2-3 years into driving the vehicle. I have a 2003 Toyota 4runner and the brake pedal is not very responsive. I had the brakes, rotors and brake system checked and there are no issues. My biggest issue is with the brake pedal itself. I feel when I hit the brake, a gentle tap doesn't produce a response. Only a mild to hard step on the brakes would cause the vehicle to stop. Im very wary of this b/c I always have to hit the brakes hard to get a response. I feel the brake pedal is loose because it is not very responsive and does not respond to tapping. In fact, if I hit the brakes and the brakes drop one inch, there would be no brake response. I had the vehicle checked by Toyota dealer and they said its some sort of brake part that needs to be replaced. Upon replacing that part, I still feel the same looseness in the brake pedal. My most serious concern is that when I hit the brakes sometimes b/c I have to hit it hard, my vehicle feels like it's drifting. The wheels would go left and right and then go straight. This does not happen often, but when it does, it freaks me out. At freeway speed, when I hit the brakes, whether its light or soft, sometimes, the car just does the random drift. I feel its the result of a loose brake pedal and perhaps delayed response to the tires. I changed the brake pads and I had my brakes inspected often due to this issue.

11 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1997 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/01/2005

Complaint received via email. The brakes failed many times on my car and they were in the repair shop four times. Each time they fixed it temporarily. Also, they indicated that oil or grease was leaking from the differential and coating the brake pads, rendering them ineffective. The symptoms included the anti lock brakes kicking in too often/ loss of braking power, and jolting at slow speeds. Last time in the repair shop they guaranteed that problem was fixed, yet the same problem recurred. This was very dangerous. They told me this was not the only incident, and that new models were designed to fix this flaw. What about the safety of those driving 1997 models ?.

12 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 11/01/2003

- the contact owns a 2003 Toyota 4 runner. The contact heard a noise coming from the front brakes. The contact had to apply the brakes with great force for the vehicle to stop. The vehicle slid to a stop. The dealer's diagnoses was that debris in the rotors caused the noise. However, they were unable to diagnose why the vehicle could not stop without sliding. The front brake pads were replaced, and the rotors resurfaced. The failure mileage was approximately 900 miles. The contact has the repair order. The current mileage was 40,000 miles.

13 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1996 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/15/2003

Consistent brake pad cracking on Toyota high performance, trd, brakes. The trd semi-metallic brake pads have been replaced twice in the last 6 weeks after hearing and feeling grinding noises when brakes are applied. Inspection with the dealer verified that the contact portion of the brake pads exhibited hairline cracks throughout the pads. This occurred both times. Trd warranted them and replaced them but it happened again. They are only paying for the replacement of the pads and not the labor involved. Alex boldman, a California trd rep have denied hearing reports regarding issues with these pads. In contrast, a matt flores, with daly city Toyota, has heard many complaints so far. Trd denies any problems with their brake pads.

Rear axle seals leaking requiring replacement of seals & rear brake pads. Defogger is inoperable due to linkage disengaged.

15 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1997 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 12/10/2000

Vehicle locked up when brakes were appled and would not move. It has been to dealer three times and nothing has changed. Also, rear axle seal was defective and replaced. Brake pads were cleaned. If problem reoccurred dealer was suppose to replace pads. When it happened again, they were just cleaned. Consumer was very fustrated at this point because there seemed to be no remedy.

16 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1997 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 08/10/1999

1997 Toyota 4 runner. The consumer stated there were two different major braking problems with the braking system. The vehicle started having braking problems at 19,900 miles. When the brakes were applied they became weak. This took 6 months to diagnose, the master cylinder was leaking. She was then informed the vehicle was unsafe to drive. This was replaced at 24,000 miles. She has also been experiencing problems since late 2003. When checked she was told there was nothing wrong. When the brakes were applied, especially on wet pavement, the vehicle would slide. She was told it was probably the abs, she states it was braking differently than prior to the problem. She took the vehicle to dealer on August 19, 2005. The parking brake handle was pulling up higher than usual. This was checked, and they found the rear brake pads were soaked in oil. This required the seals, bearings, retainers, sensor rings and the rear brake shoes to be replaced. She felt there was a design flaw in the rear axle.
