1 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/13/2018

My abs brake actuator failed while driving causing the brakes to stop functioning properly. I was forced to slam my brakes for the car to stop. Luckily I was in a parking lot going about 5 mph. Otherwise, I could have died or killed someone. There was no notice beforehand of the problem. I spoke to Toyota customer care and they claim their was an extended warranty and supplemental warranty that were issued, but the supp warranty expired April of this year (2018) and at 150,000 miles. My car currently has 155k miles. I was never notified of this problem by Toyota. They have my information on file. I would have either sold/traded in my vehicle last year had I known these cars have these problems. In researching online, NHTSA has investigated the brake actuater problems that have caused crashes and injuries. Toyota should have issued a recall like they were forced to do in 2009/2010 when they're accelerator pedals were sticking and people were dying. Now Toyota is going to charge me over $1,700 to fix the problem. I don't have a choice since the car is not in working condition. I have a case id with Toyota customer care 1811131473. The lady just lied to me about Toyota being unable to cover the problem. She made it sound like there was a contract in place and fixing my car would be breaking the terms. I asked her who negotiated the terms, and she didn't have an answer. I asked her if NHTSA or a class action forced Toyota to accept the terms and she said no. Clearly, Toyota has trained their customer service reps to lie to customers like me getting them to think there are absolute "terms" that cannot be changed in order to escape liability.

3 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/08/2017

The vsc warning system came on including several warning lights. The abs actuator failed. I am told this is a known issue but is out of warranty and the repair is $1500-$2000. This should have been recalled.

5 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/31/2017

For several months, the cruise control had only been working intermittently and my brakes seemed rough. The night before I brought my car in, all the lights on the instrument panel came on. On Aug 1, 2017, I got a diagnostic and it was the abs actuator, but I was told I also needed a brake job and an alignment so I went ahead with that $1,000 job. They could not diagnose the cruise control since it was "functioning" at the time. I had already replaced the abs system in 2013 and was told that I may apply for a reimbursement for that $3,600 job, but I am now out of the extended warranty/service campaign so I could not get reimbursed for the current abs failure replacement. After my brake job and alignment, the roughness did not seem to improve and the cruise control continued to malfunction. Foolishly, I rationalized that the brakes needed to be worn in, but soon my car started with a high pitched noise as I got in and out of the vehicle. The brakes also seemed to "slip" sometimes when initially starting the car. (foot on brake, start car, put into drive, and car would start to roll until I took my foot off the brake then reapplied it. ) I went back to Toyota hoping for a miracle and they again said you have to replace the abs, but the service campaign had not been re-extended and I was unable to afford another $3,600. So I continued to drive my faulty vehicle out of necessity. On October 12, 2017, the car began the high pitched noise and this time it didn't stop. I began driving in the parking lot slowly (20 mph) and then the brakes failed. Was able to stop by pressing very hard on the brakes. Since that day my car has been sitting at my workplace unused. Obviously, the abs system that was replaced in 2013 (still awaiting reimbursement) was replaced with another bad system. We need a recall!.

8 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/03/2014

The abs actuator failed. My local dealership seems unaware this is a know issue with my car. The repair cost so far is $1800. It seems from all research that there are options, but my dealership has not offered me any nor have the communciate well. Trying to get to the service manager today. They have had my car for 5 business days.

9 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/02/2013

I have a 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid that started showing "check vsc system" on the multifunction display in early October of 2013. By the end of that moth it became a permanent item on the display. The computer indicates a c1391 error. After testing the actuator assembly was deemed defective. I have discontinued driving this vehicle after an incident in rainy weather while the "check vsc system" was displayed on the multifunction display. I was on the interstate traveling approximately 60 mph in light rain. Traffic started slowing ahead so I tried to apply the brakes, but they did not respond immediately. After an approximately 2 second delay they did respond, but it was abruptly and caused the car to start skidding. Without immediate and substantial driver input the vehicle would have been in an out-of-control situation. The car has remained parked since that incident for fear it is too dangerous to drive without functioning brakes. The operation of the brakes on this vehicle in an abs failure mode is dangerous and potentially deadly. I have driven plenty of vehicles that were not equipped with abs, and none of those vehicle ever exhibited the dangerous behaviors this vehicle exhibits with a failed component. Since the brakes on a vehicle are relied upon in emergency situations all components in that system should be designed to fail in a safe manner leaving a vehicle that is still safe to drive. Further Toyota is aware that select years of this vehicle have a manufacturing defect or faulty design since the actuator was redesigned a couple years after this vehicle was first introduced into the market. I ask that the NHTSA investigate the safety of this vehicle model and year to determine the safety of these vehicles during an abs/vsc component failure.

10 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/05/2013

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to properly respond to deceleration attempts. The contact indicated that the vehicle stability control, brakes failed, and abs failed lights illuminated during the incident. The vehicle was taken to the dealer multiple times but the defect could not be diagnosed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the abs actuator was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 110,000.

11 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

The"check vsc system" sensor came on while I was driving. I was doing approximately 45 mph on the road. The road conditions were good and I keep up with maintenance. The abs failure light, brake and warning icons. I have it checked out and I'm told by Toyota car's abs accumulator system and water pump must be replaced and that they hadn't have such issues before. After much reasearch, this is a common complaint among Toyota Camry Hybrid owners. This seems to be a design flaw and worse, my break pads and tires are brand new. This shouldn't be an issue but breaks pulsate and makes the vehicle unsafe as you can't control breaks when needed, especially, while parked on a inclined position. I am very concerned for my safety and the safety of others if my breaks were to fail because Toyota has failed to recognize this as a vital recall repair. Without brakes you can kill or injure someone and that bad water pump can cause your engine to overheat. Please look into this and have Toyota take responsibility for this situation!.

12 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/20/2011

At multiple regular service appointments at the Toyota dealer, I reported unusual noises and a pulsing sensation that appeared to come from the brakes. The service people were not able to identify any issues. At 77000 miles, the dealer charged $400 for replacement of the master cylinder. After replacing the master cylinder, they determined that the abs actuator was failing and needed to be replaced -- at approximately $2400. Of course, they also wanted to replace the front brake pads and water pump for another $700. I took the car to an independent (non-dealer) mechanic who confirmed the need to replace the abs actuator. The mechanic also advised that the part costs so much because it is specific to the hybrid vehicles (as opposed to non-hybrid camrys) -- used parts are not much cheaper as they are harder to find. A major failure in the braking system is of great concern. The brakes feel like they are becoming increasingly less responsive. It is absolutely absurd that so many people are experiencing issues with the same component of the braking system for the same model and year vehicle, yet Toyota is not accepting responsibility for correcting this. Toyota should be held accountable for this serious safety issue, or at least concede that it is an issue specific to hybrids and would be covered under the warranty period that covers the hybrid system.

13 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/14/2011

Abs actuator failed in 2011, it was replaced by Toyota for about $2,500 (out of my pocket). Now, it is failing again and Toyota is indicating that the actuator is now $3,200. The part warranty is 1 year, so if I want to fix the car I will have to pay the $3,200. No negotiation possible with them.

14 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/11/2011

The abs actuator failed and it was difficult to put the brakes. It cost me $2,400. 00 in 2011. A few month ago the new part once again failed. I bought a used part and paid $1,100. 00. Toyota wanted me to pay $4,000. 00.
