38 Brakes Failed problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 05/13/2010

I just received a recall notice from Toyota concerning a 19 state recall of 'ssc 90h - certain 2009-2010 Corolla and Corolla matrix brake system vacuum port special service campaign". This notice advises (under "what is the condition"? "if the vehicle is operated under extremely low temperatures, there is a possibility that condensed moisture from a positive crankcase ventilation (pvc) port may seep into the brake system vacuum port ("port") and freeze. The port is located inside the intake manifold and provides vacuum assist for the brakes. Should this condition continue, ice may slowly accumulate at the port and in the worst case, ultimately plug the port. As a result, power assist to the brakes would gradually decrease (eventually to zero), and the increased pedal pressure required could lead to greater vehicle stopping distances. " "what should you do?" "if you believe that there is a possibility for your vehicle to be operated in the 19 specified states or in the conditions described above, please contact any authorized Toyota dealer and . . . . " this description of the problem is very subjective ("possibility of condensed moisture. . . ", "ice may slowly accumulate. . . "if you believe there is a possibility for your vehicle to be operated. . . " . I have already operated the vehicle in nevada (one of the 19 states listed). If this is really a safety concern I would think that all vehicles should be either a) fixed with the redesigned air intake connector or b) provide the vehicle with a safety warning sticker (placed prominently on the steering wheel?) that advises the driver that this vehicle has not been fitted with the redesigned air intake connector and that vacuum brake failure may occur whenever the outside temperature is below x degrees f (y degrees c) for periods greater than I hours. Without specifics I don't know if I should receive this new part, and if I elect not to, how do I pass on the possible extended low temperature impact to future owner(s)?.

43 Brakes Failed problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/10/2010

Toyota 2010 Corolla brake system failed. The emergency brake went on , while I was driving without me doing anything. The odometer stopped working, brake, check-engine, panic mode and airbag system lights went on. The failure has occurred twice already, first starting as a brake failure, then almost leading to the accident when everything failed at once. Almost got into an accident and I couldn't accelerate in the car. I took the car to the dealership and they gave me run around, they still don't know how to fix it or what's wrong with it. This car is beyond unsafe to drive, luckily it didn't lead to an accident and injuries both to me and other drivers.

44 Brakes Failed problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/06/2010

In my 2010 Toyota Corolla xle with 2382 miles on it, I experienced brake failure and difficulty steering while descending down a slight grade. There was no braking action when I pushed the brake pedal as far as it could go. Simultaneously heard a loud scraping sound and detected an odor. Reported incident to the dealer immediately.

45 Brakes Failed problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/04/2010

I have noticed that my brakes on my 2009 Toyota Corolla s have been not as responsive as I would assume or want them to be. This is especially noticeable when it is rainy or wet, or even damp outside. I began to notice that when it was wet my brakes sound like they are grinding when I stop and stopping distance is significantly elongated. Finally on one rainy day my brakes failed as I crashed into the person in front of me. In any usual circumstance I would have had enough time to completely stop, however my brakes completely depressed to the ground and felt that they hardly slowed my car, resulting in damage to my car and injury to myself. I have brought my Corolla into a Toyota dealership to have the breaks looked at and they said they were completely fine, however they were unable to reproduce the circumstance under which my brakes failed, therefore resulting in them saying there was no issue with the brakes. I have had all of the recalls done on my car and I still notice that the brakes are not functioning as they should.

46 Brakes Failed problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 02/25/2010

I purchased a 2009 Toyota Corolla in January 2009. I thought the brakes were a little sluggish and expressed that to the salesman. He said they were fine so I thought I just needed to get used to them. I had no other problem in 2009. In January of 2010, on two occasions, I experienced episodes in which the brakes failed. The problem was that they would hold and then slip several times before the car came to a stop. On at least one of these occasions, I thought I heard the engine racing while the brakes were being applied. After I heard about the Corolla recall, I took my car into the dealership where I had purchased it and was told that my car was not subject to the recall. I did not understand this but asked them to keep the car until they could find and fix the cause of the malfunction because I considered the car to be a death trap. This was in February 2010 and I reported to them exactly what I have now reported to you. After about two weeks they called and told me my car was "all set. " when I picked up the car, they gave me an invoice which said they had taken it for a couple of test drives, checked the codes, and found no evidence of the acceleration problem despite the fact that I had told them it was a brake problem. On 2/25/10, I applied the brakes as I approached a red light and the brakes did not respond. I do not know whether the car accelerated but I do know that it did not slow down. Consequently, I rear-ended the vehicle in front of me and my vehicle was badly damaged.

47 Brakes Failed problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 02/21/2010

I am filing this report to have documentation for my records. It is on my 2010 Corolla now having complete brake failure issues. It started on Feb. 21,2010. The brakes started to go completely to the floor. On February 24, the brakes went completely to the floor at a 5 way intersection, and I went through a stop light. I could not stop the car. That same day I went through a stop sign and had to jam on my emergency brake, so I didn't go onto a major traveled route in vermont. This is the same problem I reported to the NHTSA on 12/12/09. The odi number is 10295431. I would like to know what was done with that complaint? did it ever get forwarded to mr. Toyodo himself, congress (for the hearings?). I had complete brake failure issues for over 14 months with my 2009 Corolla. What did you do with that information? the only recall I saw was for the prius? what a joke! now my 2010 Corolla has complete brake failure. Again Toyota gets away with covering up their mistakes, and your agency does nothing. The same as covering up the new pedal recall not correcting the issue of acceleration (my odi number for this is 10314851). I have all my records and am showing them to the media (national & local). I am stating below the incident date for my current car brake failure issues is February 21st. I am however stating injuries and reported to the police. I had an acceleration incident on January 18, 2010 with my 2009 Corolla . During the incident I had complete brake failure and was injured. I did report it to the police.

48 Brakes Failed problem of the 2008 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 02/16/2010

Yesterday morning I was driving slowly up to a stop sign. I downshifted and applied the brakes, but the car would not come to a stop. I had to roll through the intersection. This is not the first time that this has occurred since I purchased the vehicle. I continued on. I was driving 30 mph in a 40 mph zone. I again slowed down and downshifted to turn into a driveway. The brakes again failed. It felt as though I could not press down hard enough on the brakes to stop. I could not turn out of the way of a garbage can and pile of rocks, just missing a mailbox. There is now minor, cosmetic damage to the front of my vehicle. This problem has inconsistently occurred over the last year. Shortly after I bought the vehicle, I brought it back due to the brakes not feeling right, and a metal on metal sound that occurred when I pressed on the brakes. Toyota looked at the brakes and said that they were behaving normally. Again, this morning I brought the vehicle in because I could not control it in yesterday's incident. The service department at Toyota looked at the vehicle, test drove it with me, but the issue did not occur so there was nothing more they could do about it.

49 Brakes Failed problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 02/09/2010

I purchased a new Toyota Corolla in Jan 2010. I took it to the dealer for gas pedal recall in the first week of Feb. After that I started facing brake issues. One day my car moved few inches back on uphill in spite of me applying the brakes. I called the dealer right away. They refused to take a look the same day as they did not have time. Next morning the brakes failed again when I was driving downhill resulting in me hitting the car infront. I again took my car to the dealer. After test driving they tell me that they can not repro the problem. The issue with the brake is an intermittent one. It does not always happen, but when it does it is very dangerous.

53 Brakes Failed problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 02/02/2010

I have Toyota Corolla 2010, bought in August 2009. I had a brake problem with this car existed from the beginning. My problem with brake was first like a suspicious case and initially unbelievable for me. That's why I was doubt at first! I never believed 2010 Corolla (I am owner) could have this problem. So I put off with that for a while. However, I realized the fact after traveling to California to visit my sister and I rented a car (Volkswagen) over there. When I was driving the car, I found out how sharp the brake of the car was. At that time I felt the difference between sharp and properly-working brake and failed brake. Other unusual experience with this Corolla is that when I was driving the car in uneven roads the brake was going down completely with generation of such odd sounds like cracking of two pieces together! therefore I realized something really wrong with the brake. The brake being weak and not working properly. I called Toyota dealer and told them the problem. Also, in tri-monthly schedules for checking the car, I told them I do not like the brake, it is not good, not sharp, slow to action, but they told me we checked everything and all is fine! nothing done to fix the brake failure. Unfortunately there are no any records of these conversations to the best of my knowledge, just I have a receipt that shows I brought the car for checking and they checked it. After that, I continue to driving, but once again, I realized the problem still exists. My next appointment for bringing the car for checking was February 7th on Sunday. I was going to tell them I can not stand with this problem and I am concern about this, but unfortunately I got an accident on Feb 2th. I was in slow line, my speed was slow (not more than 25m/h), however, when the car ahead of me stopped, I could not stopped correspondingly due to pre-existing brake failure. I hit the rear of the car. Fortunately the police officers mentioned the issue of "brake failure" in their report.

54 Brakes Failed problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

While traveling at 35mph on a 50mph roadway, anticipating to stop or steer off the roadway, my 2005 Toyota Corolla brakes and steering failed despite repeated attempts to stop or steer the vehicle to the soft shoulder to avoid rear ending the vehicle stopped ahead of me. Once I applied my brakes, the steering mechanism became non responsive as though both brakes and steering failed. I watched my vehicle continued on its forward trajectory until it slammed into the rear of the vehicle at the red light. In addition, one would have expected the air bag on this vehicle to deploy at impact at this speed. To my surprise and that of the investigating officer from tampa police department, the air bag did not deploy. Luckily, I was the only one in the vehicle as neither the driver's air bag nor the passenger air bag deployed.

55 Brakes Failed problem of the 2007 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/28/2010

My brakes momentarily fail at times when I pass over uneven surfaces on the road. It occurs a few times every week (I commute about 20 miles everyday). I live in chicago, and this brake failure occurs in nice weather as well as during snowy or rainy conditions. I have had my tires checked, and they are not the problem. The brake failure began to occur when the car was new. My tire pressure light comes on all the time for no reason. My mechanic has a Toyota Corolla too and he told me his goes on all the time as well. I just press the tire pressure button in the car to make it go off.

57 Brakes Failed problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/18/2010

Complete brake failure (14 months worth) and acceleration over 85-95 mph (with complete brake failure). I was injured at the time of the acceleration incident and the brakes failed completely. It occurred on January 18th, 2010. The car accelerated to 85-95 mph, and the pedal stuck. I had complete brake failure. I did not know what to do, and called my work. They told me to stick the car into neutral, and they connected me to 911. I was injured as my chest hit the steering wheel several times. I am resubmitting this complaint on the 2009 Corolla I owned as it looks like the brake failure issue I filed with your agency was never investigated. I looked up the odi number today, and nothing was reported on it for followup.

58 Brakes Failed problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/04/2010

Failure of brakes when going over bumps in the road. This is an ongoing problem that has happened quite frequently. I live on a dirt road which is wash-board bumpy. I also experience the same problem pulling into my parking spot at work which is bumpy. The brakes fail and the car makes a noise when going over the bumps. After the bumps, it corrects itself. No cars I have driven over the same conditions has exhibited this problem. I heard about the prius problem and that was the exact problem I had experienced. I am not sure how long it has happened, or how many miles I had on the car when I noticed it the first time. All I know is that it is still happening.

59 Brakes Failed problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 12/21/2009

When starting to operate the vehicle for the first time of the day, and it is cold out, when backing out of the driveway and applying the brakes, the rear brakes make very loud clunking noises like something is broken inside the brake assemblies on both rear wheels. I feel as if the brakes are failing, and this could possibly lead to something worse in the future.

61 Brakes Failed problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/14/2009

I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla, but because I live in texas, I am not part of the recall to have a newly designed intake air connector to relocate the brake system vacuum port. I am afraid that if I go to colorado this winter as planned, I will have brake failure. Why does the recall not extend to all 2010 Toyota Corollas???.

62 Brakes Failed problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/07/2009

As an owner of 2009 Corolla I'm very concerned about recall for brake failure in extremely low temperatures. Toyota has limited its recall and repair of this problem only to certain states. I live in NW indiana, less than 4 miles from illinois state line. Illinois owners will have their brakes fixed; indiana is not on the list. Toyota?s state restriction does not make any sense. Nw indiana has the same weather as chicago, IL and the same extreme low temperatures. Additionally, I conduct a huge portion of my business and personal matters in the state of illinois. I will have to drive my car knowing that brakes can fail on me on any given day with the extreme low temperatures (and we have months of such days ahead). How is Toyota allowed to discriminate between states without just cause? we all have a right to drive safe vehicles. What can be done to enforce Toyota to correct this problem?.

63 Brakes Failed problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 09/17/2009

Recently I received a recall on my '09 Toyota Corolla stating there was a potential problem with the brake system vacuum port. The recall says if my vehicle is operated in extremely low temperatures, there is a possibility that condensed moisture may freeze causing a potential risk of brake failure leading to an increased risk of a crash. I live in upstate new york where the temperatures drop to freezing and below this time of year. As soon as I received this notice, I called the dealer I purchased my Corolla from to make an appointment to correct this potential problem. After a good 5 minutes of being put on hold, a representative picked up and nicely asked what she could do for me. I described the recall and was put on hold again. Another 4-5 minutes past and then she picked up to tell me that the service department would call me back when they weren't so busy. I am at retirement age and can't risk having an accident. The Toyota dealers name is kent brown Toyota in big flats, new york. I'm not even sure you people are the right people to contact but if you are your help would be appreciated.

64 Brakes Failed problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

As an owner of a 2009 Toyota Corolla, I am very concerned about a recall for brake failure by Toyota that is limited to certain states based on winter temperatures. Brakes may fail at very low temperatures. I live in maryland, and maryland is not one of the states listed in the recall. I do not know how Toyota arrived at which states are cold and which are not. But I have two serious objections to the state restriction. 1. While some winters are mild in maryland, others are not. For instance, last winter was very cold. I have the heating bills to prove it. 2. But by far, my most serious objection should be obvious to anyone. The whole purpose of a car is to travel. Even if you live in florida and own one of the recalled vehicles, does this mean you can not drive to minnesota to spend several weeks to visit family over the holidays? does this mean I can't drive to upstate new york this winter for a vacation as I have planned? a car is not a house. It is very rare that a house moves from state to state while it is very very common that cars do. Looking at the various state tags on the interstate 95 will confirm this. Therefore, I am very concerned about the state limitation on this recall - particularly because it involves something as serious as possible brake failure.

65 Brakes Failed problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 08/26/2009

My concern is with the brake recall on Toyota Corollas that was started on August 26th, 2009. First, the recall only applies to 19 states. . . . What about those of us that drive across state lines? or if the car is sold to someone from another state? then it is ok if the brakes fail? we have been waiting since August to hear from them regarding this issue. Second, I no longer believe much (if anything) that Toyota tells us. Therefore, I want you to 1) demand that they recall all Toyota Corollas with the brake problem, and 2) perform your own investigation to be certain that the problem is as they describe it. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

68 Brakes Failed problem of the 2006 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 12/10/2008

The following description is from a narrative written within 3 hours after the accident. Around 5:30pm on 12/10/2008 I was driving home around 2-3 miles per hour due to traffic congestion. The sky was dark and it was lightly raining. The temperature was around 60-65 degrees fahrenheit, so ice was not present on the road. The large semi truck directly ahead of me slowed down to a stop, so I attempted to brake. My brakes did not seem to have an effect, so I pushed on the brakes harder. The brakes still had no effect. I immediately shifted the car into the park gear and applied the emergency brake. Neither the shifting the gears nor the emergency brake had any effect on the cars motion, my car kept moving forward. I eventually stopped when I smashed into the back of the truck, which caused about $5k of front end damage for my car and no apparent damage to the truck. The time between when I noticed the car was not stopping to when my car hit the truck was around 2-3 seconds. After thinking about these events afterward, I didn't remember hearing the transmission grind due to the fact the car was in the park, but continued to move forward. After the collision, the truck ahead of me left as if nothing had happened. My car stayed stationary now that its momentum was lost. I shifted the car back into drive and slowly drove home (around 20-25 mph). The brakes worked like normal and I didn't hear any noise when I applied the brakes. I took the car into the dealership on 01/10/2009. The mechanic inspected the car and found the brakes were in normal working condition. The mechanic hypothesized that the cause for the brake failure was either the brake fluid overheated or driver error. However, there was no evidence to support either hypothesis. No repair was recommended and no parts were replaced. I am confident I depressed the brakes and not the accelerator, so I suspect there might be some other problem with my brakes. The brakes have not failed since this incident.

69 Brakes Failed problem of the 2003 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/12/2007

Vehicles infront of me stepped on brakes suddenly. I applied my brakes with no response. Tapped several times again and tried holding down with no response again. Tried to swerve into suicide lane to avoid hitting car that was 30 yards in front of me and was forced to hit car as vehicle would not stop or even slow down. Brakes completely failed.

70 Brakes Failed problem of the 2006 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 09/06/2006

My 2006 Toyota Corolla does the following when braking, if a pothole(s) or bump(s) in the road is hit (while braking at the same time), the car fails to slow down or stop until the area of the potholes or bumps is passed. The brake pedal jerks forward as it appears that the brakes are failing to engage or does its job of slowing or stopping the vehicle. I have experienced this problem many times since day one, but I thought that it's a suspension problem.
