Takata recall steering column power window.
Was driving when airbag light on dash came on, have checked fuses, cleaned all electrical leads and it remains on, been on six months now. Airbag recall fixed today, told dealer to look at light. Once fixed dealer said light still on because the steering spring coil in the steering column has cut something that turns the airbag light on, cost to fix $500. I said let the ligt stay on then, he said it could affect airbag, it might not deploy.

I noticed a rattle sound around steering wheel so I took Corolla to service department. Technician was able to find the rattle. Dealership service center contacted Toyota and they we're advised to replace my entire steering wheel column. The rattle sound is gone but since they replaced the steering wheel column there seems to be over rotation of the steering wheel (meaning I have to turn the wheel more than usual to make a right or left hand turn), steering wheel will not return to the center like normal and makes a rubbing sound when I turn left or right while parked or driving at very low speeds 5-10 mph. Technician and service advisor stated they felt the car drove fine and that they did everything they could to remedy the problem. I will be taking my car to service department one more time to see if they can figure out what the rubbing noise is and why my vehicle steering is not as it should be.

A week ago after picking my son, I noticed that when I turned the steering wheel of my 2009 Toyota Corolla to a certain point, my whole steering wheel was moving and making a grinding noise. I brought it to copeland Toyota the dealership where I purchased my new car back in 2008. Mon. 9/10 I called to obtain the status of my vehicle. I was told a bolt came out of the steering column and they were "trying" to get the bolt back in. Normal wear and tear would say a bolt falls out a new bolt goes in, not "trying" to get back in. I was also told that the worst that would happen is that they would need to replace the steering column. I filed a claim with Toyota as I am no longer under warranty ( 1 yr and 4,000 ml over). Later Monday, Toyota stated that the bracket of the steering column is the issue and the whole unit would need to be replaced. When I asked the service dept, I was dealing with; if this fell under "normal wear and tear" he told me it did not. Tuesday 9/11, I heard back the Toyota corporate office that they would not be paying for this and that I would be responsible for the bill, that is just over $2000. 00. I spoke with [xxx] at the dealership who is the service manager & he himself mentioned that this is a "unique case. " regardless if it covered under warranty or not, this is a safety issue, one that is not from normal wear and tear and I certainly did not create. I was told that I haven't had my car serviced there for a year, everyone knows that dealerships costs for preventive maintenance is extremely pricey and I didn't go there for oil changes and tire rotations, I did bring it in for this specific issue. When have you ever heard of any car company dropping your steering column to check bolts during a routine maintenance check? information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. Very strong vibration has been present in my steering column. I took it to the dealer which told me it was the rear struts. Replaced them $600. 00. The mechanic noted in his notes that vibration was still bad upon releasing the car to me. I was told I needed new tires and balancing. I took it elsewhere and had new tires and balancing done. The problem still present today. I took it in again today and was told it was now my roters. New pads, roters and another alignment with rear brakes cleaned and re balance another $450. 00. This whole time I have been feeling that the problem is in the steering column. Now I learn there was an investigation reguarding my make and model for that year. I am to get my car back this afternoon and will want something investigated if the problem is still there.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, there was a loud knocking sound whenever the steering was turn. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnose that the intermediate steering column was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 49,000 and the current mileage was 49,500.

Steering column yoke is loose or slipping. I'm afraid it will fail totally and cause accident or injury. Local dealer wants $370 to fix it but even though it is out of warranty I think they should replace it and the government should look into forcing a recall if needed.
The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated while driving 40 mph, the steering column vibrated constantly. The vehicle was taken to the dealer twice where they inspected the suspension and re balancing the tires but the vibration continued. The dealer stated they cannot find the problem to repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 4 and the current mileage was 4,000.
I am following up on this complaint #10318215 regarding the steering problems with my Corolla leading to drifting and unsteadiness while driving at higher speeds. The symptoms on my 2009 Corolla with the steering column are getting worse. The drifts are getting more pronounced and at times feel more like a swerve. The frequency of the drifting has increased. Also, I am noticing the uneasiness at slower speeds. In short, I do not feel safe driving this car, and I experienced a scary incident of my car swerving out as a truck passed me. As much as possible, I try to avoid freeway driving, which is a big hassle, considering that I have a 56-mile roundtrip work commute. This commute is mostly all free way driving on route 8 & 77 and the turnpike. To compensate, I need to take the back roads, adding an extra fifteen minutes to my commute. The dealership has been in contact with Toyota corporate who are saying that there is no problem and that the case has been closed with NHTSA. What am to do when the dealership admits to not knowing how to fix the problem and the regional service rep for Toyota says there is on problem and that the case with the steering column is closed. Please help. What am I to do? I am driving an unsafe car. I am restricted as to the use of my car. There is no resolution in site from what I can see. Please feel free to contact me with any questions at [xxx] or [xxx] . I look forward to your reply. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
I have 2010 Toyota Corolla (VIN# [xxx] ) purchased on oct 31 2009 from sansoneautomall, NJ. There is a problem with the steering column initially which started with some unique sound, then from Feb 2010 I was seriously facing steering freeze (will get harden) only 15-20% of steering moves when in 0' speed, for this I have visited my dealer service center 3 times but there is no use. Only with lot of disappointment and arguments saying "what is the reason to buy a brand new car to get problems" I was requesting to solve my problem. They simply said, there is nothing we can do if you have no other mean to commute its upto you and if you want you call Toyota head quarters for this. I even spent lot of time in calling main Toyota nr but simply I get voice message that "there is huge volume of call waiting please wait". I really wonder when I/anyone buy a car from dealer and if they cannot receive me assist me properly "where from I get the justice????". Recently I found two more new problems they are: in a slope road car picks-up acceleration and maintains speed as if it is cruised and once I apply break after a while the speed comes to normal position other prob- fuel indicator stuck up to full level indi' even the fuel is low. With this I'm day by day getting depressed as I spent quite lot of savings (money) on the car to avoid any hassles buying a used car, but unfortunately its a disaster to me. I request to provide me needed solution to fix my depressing situation. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
My 2010 Toyota Corolla le seems to wander randomly left or right. It is difficult to travel in a straight line without frequent adjustment to the steering column. It feels like I am driving on a windy day and the car is being tossed around. Actually, any wind at all only makes the matter much worse. Almost feels like the rear end of the car has a slight fishtailing. This is all most noticeable at 45 mph and above. Local service dept. Could not look at it for three weeks. I will not let my 17 year old daughter drive this car. I have had this car for only six weeks and would surely give it back if I could. Disappointed that I did not get a response to my emails sent to Toyota.
The contact owns 2009 Toyota Corolla. The driver stated that whenever he drove his vehicle over 55 mph he noticed that it would drift as if there was a strong wind blowing. The contact stated that the vehicle also performed as if there was too much lubrication in the steering column. The failure mileage was 31,000 and the current mileage is 38,000. Updated 04/13/10. The consumer stated the steering problem has become progressively worse. The dealer stated there was no fix for the problem, and they were waiting for a solution from Toyota. Updated 05/11/10. Updated 08/19/jb.
My car is a 1999 Toyota, Corolla and I have had so many things go wrong with this car. First of all I also had a nova 1989 that had the same problem. The cv joint went twice(@)30 to 40 k miles. I can not believe after 10 years they still did not fix this problem. It is truly a manufactures problem. Also I had to have my steering column replaced in this 1999 and I never heard of the steering column needing to be replaced. And here I am again at 135,282 miles and I need another
cv joint this sure seems like a true lemon car. I looked up on odi and am astound
at all the cars and the problems they have. I was planning on buying a new car but I have no idea what manufacture to trust. None of them want to fix what the
manufactures screws up or owes up to it. What is a consumer to do?.

purchased 2003, Toyota, Corolla, VIN: [xxx] with daughter. Veh was purchased from Toyota of orange in CA. Two days later a hit and run driver forced veh to skid across five lanes on interstate 10 in ontario, CA, and landed atop center divider. The vehicle was sent to repair shop and "repaired" after approximately 5-8 months. However, the car was never properly repaired, and I complained to both Toyota , and to the insurance company, allstate, but Toyota adamantly stated the veh was without problems. The car was continually in the shop for the brakes. Eventually the carpet caused the accelerator to become stuck and the car went out of control. I was forced to reach down while the car moving and pull the carpet with both hands to release the accelerator. Stepping on the brakes did not help. Neither Toyota repair nor allstate would help resolve our complaints since 2003, we were simply told that the veh was fine. Additionally I believe the frame is bent, lack of interlocking brakes causing skids, brakes are soft and drop to floor, and poor steering column. This car is dangerous and is impossible to drive without involving near miss accident episodes. The car skids if going as little as 5-10 miles per hour. I offered to give the car away to anyone who was willing to investigate my complaints, all to no avail. I just recently learned that one of the problems I heard in the brand new car was a hole in the exhaust system. Toyota continually denied this for 5-6 years, then by accident a very young newly employed staff at Toyota of orange, informed us that our complaint about loud air sounding noise was a hole in the exhaust, which had been continually making the noise, and burning of eyes (migraines). The brakes were repaired every 2-4 months or less until I just reported less frequently. The car is now no longer under warranty. Currently it needs some brakes, rotors, drums, calipers, and shocks as always.
