3 Steering problem of the 2024 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 04/29/2025

My [xxx] daughter's 2024 Toyota Corolla stopped in the middle of the road and would not move. She received a message that said, "engine stopped steering power low". She called me in a panic and could not move the car out of traffic. I asked her to turn the car off and back on and it resolved the issue. This could cause a traffic fatality with loss of control of a car in traffic. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

4 Steering problem of the 2020 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 04/27/2025

After shortly pumping gas, I received a alert on my car that I needed to check my fuel cap, after checking fuel cap I proceeded to drive on the highway during this time a multitude of sensors started to go off on my car, and it started to drive weird there were light such as my interlock, being deactivated, parking, brake, deactivated, malfunction of vsc, collision deactivated. Then suddenly while driving at an accelerated speed, and trying to slow down, my engine turned itself off, and I was not able to re-crank my car. There is an active recall with Toyota for the fuel pump, which I was told by Toyota was the issue, but due to my VIN not being associated they would not repair as a recall.

5 Steering problem of the 2024 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 04/01/2025

Vehicle information: * make: Toyota * model: Corolla hybrid awd * model year: 2024 * current mileage: [14,000] * mileage when problem noticed: ~8,000-9,000 miles incident description: my 2024 Toyota Corolla hybrid awd has a severe steering defect. After a right turn, the steering wheel consistently fails to return to center, remaining 5-15 degrees (up to 20 for sharp turns) off-center to the right. It does not self-correct. Occasionally, this also occurs after left turns, but less frequently. The vehicle requires constant, active manual correction to stay straight. If I release the wheel, the car can drift right, posing a significant collision risk. The steering feels "floaty" and lacks the expected resistance to return to center. This issue began abruptly around 8,000-9,000 miles. Multiple dealership visits and alignment checks have not resolved it. No prior accidents or modifications. The lane tracing assist (lta) system functions smoothly, keeping the car centered. However, immediately after disengaging lta, the manual steering defect reappears, indicating an underlying mechanical problem, not an electronic one. Safety concern: this defect creates a serious safety hazard. It demands constant driver attention and effort, leading to distraction and fatigue. This compromises directional stability and significantly increases accident risk, as the car will veer off course if not continuously corrected. I urge NHTSA to investigate this defect. Similar "sticky steering" or "poor return to center" issues are reported in other modern vehicles, and Toyota itself issued csp 22te02 for a related "slower to return to center" issue in 2018 camry models, proving this is a known type of defect, not normal operation.

6 Steering problem of the 2024 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/27/2025

I was able to distinguish today the car noises my vehicle is making happens when I break. Like a “eeeeek” sound. My mileage is under 8,000, had the car almost a year. Also I notice my wheel stiffens. I’m able to verify it happens when I merge - specifically when the lane dashes end. The wheel somehow gets tight even when driving with both hands. As if the vehicle gets confused. This has happened about 5 times this year but every time it happens- I brace myself for the vehicle to crash since I can’t control the wheel, no matter how strong I try to gain control. The wheel gets too tight to steer. These episodes lasts about 3-4 seconds. I am going to take it to the dealership on April 1, 2025. Also there were no messages on my dashboard when these episodes occurred.

9 Steering problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/03/2025

Complaint against ben nielsen skyline automotive – faulty repairs & lack of response I am filing a complaint regarding incomplete and faulty repairs performed on my household’s 2005 Toyota Corolla ce at ben nielsen skyline automotive on November 22, 2024 (invoice #1 attached) and January 3, 2025 (invoice #2 attached). During my first visit, the mechanic identified an oil leak, added dye to locate the source, and instructed me to return after 100 miles for further repairs. I followed these instructions and returned on January 3, 2025, when the shop also adjusted the tie rod and installed new rear brakes. At the time, I trusted that the work had been completed to a professional standard and that my vehicle was safe to drive. However, during a visit to shirlington shell on February 22, 2025, for an unrelated inspection (invoice #3 attached), their mechanic raised serious concerns about the quality of repairs done by ben nielsen skyline automotive: - the tie rod adjustment was not completed properly, which the second mechanic stated made the car potentially unsafe to drive (video evidence available upon request). - the fluid leak was not fully resolved. - the rear brakes installed by ben nielsen skyline automotive are making noise, suggesting they were not installed correctly. These issues indicate that the repairs I paid for were either incomplete or improperly performed, leading to safety concerns and additional costs to diagnose and correct the problems. After discovering these faults, I made multiple attempts to contact ben nielsen skyline automotive via phone and email to request a resolution, including a full reimbursement for the tie rod adjustment, fluid leak repair, and rear brake installation. Unfortunately, my email messages and calls have gone unanswered, leaving me no choice but to escalate this matter.

10 Steering problem of the 2016 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/30/2024

I recently 6 weeks ago bought a used certified 2016 Toyota Corolla with 43,000 miles. I have been going back and forth with Toyota since the day after I bought it about the many mechanical issues that pose a major safety risk. The car shudders/vibrates when accelerating, knocks when backing up. And when making turns the car shifts hard side to side with a shudder and wobble in floor board of car. It feels as if you don’t have control of the vehicle when driving. It has lots of loose play in the front end and steering really the whole car. It also has a problem going up hill and jumping on fwy a major problem accelerating. They keep telling me car is working per design but this is a lie. I have taken it to 2 other mechanics who told me this car has major issues safety ones to take it back. Toyota fixed the control arms stating that might be what it is but the same problems remain. I am afraid to drive this vehicle and they refuse to figure out the problems and fix them. 2 days after buying it I told them take the car back it has too many mechanical issues they refused. I don’t know what to do I cannot continue driving this car like this and in the rain it could barely handle also. The car has a feeling of loss of control like the whole frame of car is loose. I need help and don’t know what else to do I’ve taken the car back to them about 15 times. They continue to lie and say nothing is wrong even though when I test drove it with the head mechanic. He admitted the car has major issues but told me he did not want to get involved and I would have to take it up with management. I traded in my 2011 SUV that was in good working order to buy this smaller car so my daughter could also learn to drive. They should have never sold this vehicle with this many mechanical safety issues please help.

11 Steering problem of the 2015 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/26/2024

I am not sure exactly what happened but their was indeed an internal systems failure of some sort that definitely needs to be resolved and the public needs to be made aware of. I lost control of my vehicle do to some circumstance beyond my control and I was nearly killed an a father and son as well. I hope the government gets to the bottom of this and makes all humans aware of this threat to our way of life and human's lifes in general. Regardless I was driving and minding my own business and causing no harm to anyone when I lost control of my vehicle and it swerved to the right in an intersection causing an accident. Please utilize our tax money properly and make sure the people responsible for this are held accountable in accordance with the law and make the public aware of who they are. 12 Steering problem of the 2023 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/31/2024

On [xxx], around 7:45 pm, my husband and I were driving on [xxx] from atlanta to visit family at john’s creek. We were driving at a steady speed of approximately 70mph on the second lane from the left when all of a sudden, the vehicle displayed a 'malfunction' alert and began swerving uncontrollably. Despite our attempts to regain control, the car swerved right, striking another vehicle three lanes away. We had no control over the steering or bringing the car to a safe stop. After colliding with the other vehicle, it then returned to its original lane and came to a sudden stop with a message displayed stating 'shifting to p'. During this incident, an sos call was automatically placed to Toyota, and we were subsequently connected to 911 through them. Our vehicle got damaged due to this and so did the other vehicle that got hit. The vehicle not only endangered our lives but was also a potential harm to others on the road. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

13 Steering problem of the 2024 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/25/2024

My son reported driving home from school. He was stopped an intersection ready to make a turn. When he stepped on the gas pedal to go, the engine stopped and a message "engine stopped, steering power low" message appeared in the dashboard. Engine light and steering light also came "on" the dash. This may occur while driving and put the driver at risk. His 2024 Toyota Corolla was brought in to the wesley chapel Toyota dealership yesterday 10/29/2024. The technician did not find any error codes and found the battery and alternator to be in good working condition. Issue unresolved by the dealership.

14 Steering problem of the 2013 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 09/16/2024

On Monday, [xxx], I was at the cvs pharmacy drive through when the failure occurred. There was no accident and otherwise no warning before it happened. I attempted to pull out when I noticed the car was drifting and the steering was extremely stiff. I looked down to see that the airbag light and brake light were both on. I coasted into a spot I happened to be aligned with. As I did, I felt the brakes and steering stiffen even more until they were almost 100% seized. (kind of felt like I was fighting hydraulic fluid. ) you guys are welcome to request to inspect the vehicle. I haven't been able to get it inspected, because the Toyota dealership wants me to pay a diagnostic fee to prove the airbag light came on due to the airbag assembly for them to be able to cover the work under the extended warranty for the airbag system. There was no accident. I thankfully didn't have any speed behind me. So, I just barely had enough brakes to stop. This also means that I didn't make an insurance claim or call the police. I did get a tow truck to come out with state farm roadside assistance, though. The vehicle is at my father's house. We far as how this has affected us, I'm never buying a vehicle with electric steering again. At least with traditional power steering, if there's a failure, you can still steer the vehicle, even if it is difficult. If I had been coming down the winding, 6% grade from lake tahoe to carson when it occurred a few nights ago, I wouldn't have been able to stop or steer; I probably would have went into the ravine. Had we been on the highway or even coming down the hill in carson from[xxx] when I lost controls, we could both be dead right now. What's worse is I saw a forum where a bunch of people were talking about this happening to them: losing brakes and steering randomly, while actively driving. A few of them were only at 40k miles. In each case, airbags did not deploy. I think the sensor is causing the crashes sporadically. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5.

16 Steering problem of the 2023 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 06/25/2024

Description of problem/issue: dear reader: I recently purchased a new (certified preowned) vehicle and ever since then I have been experiencing some concerns with its handling on the road. This letter seeks to communicate this matter to the proper establishment for some possible recourse. On level roads while the steering wheel is centered straight up (near/over 40mph), the car tends to automatically glide to the left of the lane or coast quickly to the right and won’t stay centered in the lane very long without driver input to steer the car back to the center of the lane. Then when re-centering the car it roams in the other direction, and so forth (an oscillating effect). The issue is that the car diverts from the center of the lane and to maintain the center of the lane the driver has to constantly work at pulling the vehicle back to center. This is not the type of driving performance that I would expect on a new or certified new vehicle. It is both a nuisance and a hazard having to constantly steer the vehicle to center up in the lane. The car’s auto lane assist and departure assist and auto steering assist features are turned off during this time. And even when all these driver assist features are turned back on the drifting/pulling pattern is quite pronounced or seems to be compensating in my opinion. A google search of the term “2023 Toyota Corolla pulls to both sides” produces some great results as to the possible cause and effect. I have never driven a vehicle that diverts so quickly from its own lane so shortly after the driver’s hand is removed from the steering wheel. Nevertheless, the issues that I pointed out remains very alarming and nerve-racking for me! for safety reasons I’m still not pleased with how the car handles on the road. I wonder if there are any safety recalls, current or pending, concerning any of the steering or alignment components/features that would help resolve this problem?.

17 Steering problem of the 2024 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 06/13/2024

My vehicle stalled when pulling out into traffic. I lost power steering and electrical and the engine died. The vehicle had to be restarted to continue driving. I was going about 1 to 2 mph when the issue happened. The vehicle was in motion and stalled while other vehicles were in motion putting my safety at risk, had I been going any faster or if there was an increased amount of traffic. I reported the problem to the dealer service center, but they were unable to reproduce it. The vehicle was inspected by Toyota only, no police or insurance. When the issue happened, a warning light appeared on the dash similar to a circle with an exclamation mark inside. There were no messages and no other symptoms prior to the failure.

18 Steering problem of the 2016 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 06/01/2024

A knocking noise is coming from the front of car. Noise correlates with car motion. Worn parts in suspension were replaced by euro car doctor in costa mesa. One problem complies with Toyota technical service bulletin. Noise continues. The electronic invoice has photos of worn parts. Euro car doctor documents concern. I do not trust the local Toyota dealer service department to properly inspect the vehicle.

19 Steering problem of the 2018 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 05/09/2024

A car was going to hit my car, I went to hit the horn and the horn doesn't work a few days later a airbag light went on. Went to the dealership and they said it's a know malfunction in Toyota Corolla. They are not sure if the airbags will work or not. They recommend that I put a notice in for recall since there are still no recalls. This is a huge safety issue.

21 Steering problem of the 2024 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/30/2024

Steering—car seems to slip when driving at 30mph and taking a curve. Very brief. Traveling at 70mph car shakes.

22 Steering problem of the 2022 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/15/2024

When traveling via highway at approximately 60 mph, the right front tire struck a small pothole. The vehicle continued driving normally until stopping at a light. Thereafter, the front right wheel started making rhythmic vibration noises while vibrating extensively, transferring to the steering wheel. Upon visual inspection, nothing appeared wrong. After driving several miles, the vibration died down to a small trickle and now remains along with humming at faster highway speeds. This imitates a broken wheel bearing that occurred on the left front tire, but the Toyota dealer has refused to acknowledge any issue let alone inspect it. This sudden - yet entirely associated with driving - impact clearly caused damage to the wheel bearing and will accelerate its failure. If this occurs at such a rate the bearing fails upon contact with such driving conditions, drivers may lose ability to control their car altogether. A similar issue occurred and was remedied by the dealer for the left wheel. This could be a design flaw resulting from placing too large of tires and too stiff suspension for the Corolla, resulting in mechanical damage whilst driving in normal conditions, which could lead to the failure of steering related mechanical components. The end result of which could be death. Such theories have not been investigated. No warning lamps displayed at any time.

23 Steering problem of the 2016 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/06/2024

I have been driving my car since 2016, however since Nov 24, 2023. Incidents that alarm me have happen. I have filed a police report but don't have the funds to get vehicle swept. All of these events occur while I am driving. Passenger windows goes up in and down a lot. Static in my speakers. Steering wheels lock. Somethings draining my battery. Though I have ensured nothings on or there isn't any short fuses. Doors unlock. Door beeps though someone has had access. Trunk pops open. I am reaching out to NHTSA because my safety is at risk. Is any other Corolla owners reporting this. Please assist me.

24 Steering problem of the 2024 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/01/2024

Car has broke down a total of 4 times since I have gotten it from Toyota back in December of 2023. I have a dash-cam now that has footage of the car breaking down. Toyota fails to acknowledge my concerns and comes up with excuses and tells me to wait until it happens more frequently. I would love to have this car inspected, but as Toyota has stated they cannot get the issue to repeat. My safety for others and myself feel uneasy with the whole ordeal as it happens at the most random times. The first few times my car has broke down, the steering wheel locked up and forced itself all the way to the left on its own causing me to hit a curb and median. Manual control over the steering wheel was not possible. Luckily with this occurring both times I was going a slow speed. The other two times I had full control of the wheel but my engine would stop and the engine stopped message would appear on my dash screen. Vehicle has been inspected by the dealership 4 times with no luck on repeating the issue. Breaking down presented a dash message of engine stopped, abs system stopped, power steering stopped and would quickly cycle through warnings and shutdown.

25 Steering problem of the 2023 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 12/22/2023

I was useing the lane keeping assist and steering assist. I was driving down the hyw and parts of the solid white line to the right of me was faded or missing with no sholders. A wide truck that was about to pass me going the opposite direction had crossed over the center lane line and the stearing assist jolted me to the right where there was no visible line as I tryed to turn the steerting wheel to the left the assist jolted me to the right as the line became visible again causing us to go in to a big ditch.

27 Steering problem of the 2011 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 12/04/2023

While driving on a straight road steering wheel suddenly jerk hard left and right several times for just a few seconds and then went normal. This caused the car to cross lane into oncoming traffic. Fortunately steering went to normal before causing head on collision. I took the car into local Toyota dealer to be checked. They could not duplicate trouble. No warning lamps lit up and no fault codes per dealership technician.

28 Steering problem of the 2024 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/29/2023

On 11/29/23 after 11:30pm, I was in the process of clearing an exit and at the tail end of the exit it felt like the car was "correcting" itself and I was unable to stay turning right. The steering wheel felt locked and I was unable to control the car. The car impacted the guardrail and I was able to regain control after the initial impact. -this is a brand new car with less than 100 miles at the time of the accident. - prior to the collision, there were no warning signals from the dashboard. - I was not injured from the accident as I was only able to go around 27-33mph due to a tractor trailor clearing the exit in front of me. No others were involved. - the manufacturer sent an inspector to look at the vehicle and test drive it. However, they did not test drive in the same conditions I was in or at. - the issue was not reproduced by another party. (photos were taken the next day).

29 Steering problem of the 2022 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/15/2023

My daughter was driving yesterday when the steering wheel locked suddenly. She was sideswiped by another vehicle that hit the wheel well and forced the steering to work again. The occupants of the other vehicle did not pull over so she drove on to my work where she broke down crying and explained what happened. I took the car in yesterday to diagnose any issues with the car and was told that this is a feature that Toyota has when the car hits something like a pothole at faster speeds. My daughter could not have been going terribly fast considering it was 5:00 p. M. In los angeles on olympic blvd. During the height of rush hour; however, most concerning is I was told that according to diagnostics this is the third time the car had done this due to "aggressive acceleration". They told me that the jolt from the other car hitting the wheel well must have reset the sensor so the steering wheel could start working again. They said this is a normal safety feature on all Toyota hybrids. I asked for more clarification on what exactly we should do to prevent this happening in the future and they said to accelerate slowly so the sensor has time to keep up. This seems like an incredibly unsafe feature. I emailed Toyota's corporate office for clarification but received nothing to date. I am extremely nervous to drive my car and especially to have my 16 year old daughter drive it! I do have the diagnostic printout the Toyota service department gave me yesterday and am happy to share if you would find it useful.
