3 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/25/2011

I have a 2010 Corolla s model with 44k miles on it . My wife comutes with this vehicle every day for work. I drive the vehicle on the weekends when we travel out of town. Last week while I was driving my wifes car I noticed that the steering felt loose and unresponsive at low and especially at freeway speeds. It almost feels like the car is hydroplaning. I asked my wife if she had noticed any difference in the car since we have owned it. She confirmed with me that the steering did feel significantlly different and descibed the feeling exactlly like I had around the time I noticed it as well. I then got on the internet to do some research on this problem and I seen that there were many 2010 Corolla owners that had the same problem as I. All research seems to to be linked with the electric power steering. I now feel the car is unsafe to put my family in especially since I had saw that there was 8 accidents and 11 injuries and 168 complaints linked to this problem on the (NHTSA) website.

4 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/19/2010

The car was purchased on 10\19\2010 in a town about 3 hours from where I live. My wife drove the car home. Tire pressures were checked and were at 30 psi per the vehicle's manufacturer's label. I then drove the car (for the first time on a highway) and noticed that the car was indeed unsteady in curves. It wondered left and right and the power steering seemed loose or was adding power steering boost when not necessary. On 11/01/2010 I brought the car to an alignment shop that bighorn Toyota uses. They said the alignment was not within specs. Afterwards and on my way home (about 1 1/2 hour drive down interstate and two lane roads) I now noticed that the vehicle, when in left curves, continued to have this slack or loose feeling at highway speeds and would not correct itself or straighten out coming out of the curves. One would have to keep your hands on the steering wheel to compensate for the looseness. Right corners or curves were not loose and the vehicle would correct itself once you came out of the curve. Thinking that the alignment was not done correctly I went to another shop (big o) in craig, CO. They said the alignment was perfect (I have both print outs to confirm). At this time I decided (after discussion with the store manager) replace the tires with a higher quality tire. The same problem still existed afterwards. I contacted a Toyota service manager, they are aware of the issue but have no fix for the problem as of this date. This may not be a big problem on dry roads but on icy, snow packed or wet roads, this car will be a handful to keep it under control.

5 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 09/07/2010

When driving my 2010 Toyota Corolla on the highway, the steering will suddenly drift from side to side giving the sensation that I am hydroplaning or that my tires are bald, even though the roads are completely dry. Luckily, nothing has happened yet, but it is very disconcerting and very scary. I could easily see something happening if I were to overcompensate and steer to the other direction. This would be easy to do because the steering feels so loose. I have not done anything yet. It's such a new car that I'm not sure what I can do - until something actually fails, which would be too late. I really hope NHTSA researches this issue immediately.

6 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 07/27/2010

I have a 2009 Toyota Corolla. Since day one I noticed that the steering felt loose. It feels like the wind is blowing the car around and it is difficult to keep it going straight. I need to constantly keep both hands on the wheel. The car is currently at the Toyota dealer for repair. At first they said they would not do anything because there is not a recall for this problem. When I explained to them that I had seen an article on the internet that said Toyota issued a technical service bulletin that would allow dealers to do the repair if the customer complained, they investigated and are saying now they will fix it.

7 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2007 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 06/12/2010

I own a 2007 Toyota Corolla. If it is windy on the freeway when I drive, I get blown all over the road. I have literally been blown of onto the shoulder of the road or into the other lane. Passing semi-trucks is also extremely dangerous in windy conditions. I look for similar movement in other small cars while I am driving and I do not see them being blown all over the road so I think that this must be a problem special to the Corolla. I is extremely scary when I'm traveling the posted speed limit on the highway and my car gets completely blown off of the road. The steering is so loose that I feel like I have very little control when being blown around by wind, and in reality, I probably do have very little control. Please look into this. I would be willing to place a bet that there have been fatal crashes involving Corollas under windy conditions.

8 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/10/2010

The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph in rainy conditions, the vehicle started steering to the right although she was driving in a straight direction. She had noticed that the steering felt loose prior to the failure. The contact was not sure if the vehicle also accelerated and steered to the right or if the only problem was the steering as the failure occurred so quickly. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was approximately 4,800. The current mileage was 5,000.

9 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/05/2010

On my 2010 Toyota Corolla, at highway speeds (65-70 mph), the vehicle will feel as though the steering is loose. . . Like I'm going over a metal-grate bridge, where the car moves sideways on it's own. I drive approximately 100 highway miles a day, and this is a daily occurrence. I brought the vehicle to Toyota on 3/4/10, but they claim they do not feel the steering problem. I don't feel it was sufficiently tested, as they did not do any highway driving. They've dismissed my fears and will not be correcting the problem.

10 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 02/17/2010

I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla and at highway speeds the car "drifts" , at lower speeds it does not occur. This issue is very much a concern as at expressway speeds it seems the steering is very loose, effecting the stability and control of the vehicle.

11 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 12/26/2009

Bought a 2010 Corolla on 12/26/09 with goodyear eagle LS 2 tires. Upon driving home my steering was weaving left to right felt as though I was driving on ice and/or hydroplaning. Toyota regional rep came from corporate, looked at the steering 2 wks ago. Steering improved until driving in rain on 4/4/10 the steering became loose and the car was weaving left to right and I was once again hydroplaning at 65 mph goodyear man said when traction is lost to the road, the vehicle will hydroplane. (these tires are dangerous) the consumer stated it was very difficult to control the steering. The vehicle would wander into the next lane. The consumer also stated the vehicle did not always stop in time when the brakes were applied. The consumer was told the vehicle was equipped with abs and they were much better and safer. Updated ivoq 03/10/11.

12 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/19/2009

2010 Toyota Corolla s drifts to the left and right at speeds above 40 mph making car require constant adjustment to stay in lane. Longer trips are exhausting as the car has to be actively steered at all times to keep from wandering out of the lane. Steering feels loose and wheel needs to be turned more than 1/6 of a turn to correct vehicle.

13 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 09/10/2009

Steering erratic on highway speeds. Car is unstable at highway speeds, steering too loose.

14 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/11/2009

I bought a 2009 Toyota Corolla in Nov. 2008. I have complained to the dealer that the steering was loose(floats in and out of lane) hard to drive. Also about mpg 27 highway. I brought the car in for inspections on four occasions. I was basicly "blown off".

15 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2007 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/01/2007

I bought a 2007 Toyota Corolla two years ago and have noticed that sometimes at high speed it feels as if im loosing control of the car and that the steering feels loose. At the beginning, I didn't pay much attention, but this had created me to feel insecure when im driving fast. Im currently afraid to drive over 55mph because I have noticed that over that speed it feels as if the car is going thru a lot of wind. I cant really tell if the car is going in one particular direction, it just feels as if I cant make it go straight and have to constantly correct the direction im driving, even if its a straight road. I took the car to a shop to get it checked but they said the computer did not indicate any problems with the steering. I have been driving since 2003 and the last two years have been very stressful, all this time I've been thinking it was me that couldn't keep control of the car and had even considered retaking driving classes. I depend on my car on a daily basis and would deeply appreciate if you could make an investigation on this issue.
