Steering wheel is hard to turn while driving. Because of hard steering wheel, it is hard to turn. I feel risky while turning because there would be a chances that it won't turn in time and would have the risk of collision.

My car's steering wheel for the past couple of days has been so stiff and hard to maneuver. I went to work fine but as I was about to leave work, I turned the car on, seems like the start was weak, as I backed up 2 feet, the steering wheel was so hard to maneuver. I went to park my car back to where it was from, turned off the engine, then all I hear was a clicking sound, engine won't start. Coworkers jumped the car, it started, took it to advance for diagnosis, they didn't find anything wrong on the alternator or battery (both less than 2 years old). The car ran like nothing was wrong. Went to work driving the car the following day. It was fine, until I have to leave work again. The same thing happened!!! car's on park, started the car, backed up, turned the wheels, it was stiff and it seemed to have locked, coworkers jump started it, drove home but the steering wheel was acting weird. I made it home. Husband drove the car a blocks from the house to see it for himself then while driving back he mentioned that the steering wheel started get sooooo hard and stiff. It was not safe for me to drive the car. This needs to be investigated.

Update!. On 11/25/11 I wrote: Nov 25, 2011 - the villages, FL - vehicle speed control
this is a new car purchase (w/200 mi). At 60-75 mph (and noticeable also at slower speeds on other roads) on the freeway the car's steering wanders all over the road, it cannot stay on a straight line even if the steering wheel is not moved. T

update 3/2/12 - I have an update on the problem. The problem for me is not looseness or wandering from looseness it's an overly tight steering situation causing tracking fluctuations. . . Most cars have some slack or 'looseness' when driving straight at higher speeds. . . For safety. Humans breathe and move their bodies and heads all the time. This all translates to small natural movements in the arms and hands. If the steering at higher speeds is so tight that the least movement on the steering translates to wheel movement (imagine a go cart at 75 mph) , then while it's great at 30-45mph (for tight responsive steering) - it makes for an unmanageable struggle at higher speeds to control the steering. The car steering is reacting to the smallest movements. . . Think. . . Flying a slower cessna 172 where large steering movements cause slow turns, yet in a military jet a minute movement of the stick causes tight radical changes. Most humans are not jet pilots and we need some 'slack' at high speeds. . . Otherwise over-corrections could cause steering oscillation and loss of control (crash). Perhaps Toyota countered the 'looseness' complaints of 2009/2010 with overly tight steering in 2011. But Toyota guys, do you actually drive your cars? no real engineer would call the steering acceptable. It's really a serious problem. Just copy what BMW does. Their steering is tight, natural and yet totally controllable. Can I please have a new steering? please? for my wife's safety?.

I drive a 2009 Toyota Corolla s. Starting today I refueled my car and when I started the car again the steering was extremely hard to move. I tried restarting it three times before the steering was back to the way it normally turns. Later that day I started my car again and heard a buzzing from the steering column and the power steering went away again. I restarted the car and power steering was back. Again that day I started my car and proceeded to back up when the power steering went and the wheel locked up turning left as I was backing up. I almost hit a wall in a parking garage and had to restart my car until power steering was regained. I made it back to my office and will drive my car straight to the selling dealership after work.

The steering on my 2004 is harder to control at speeds of about 55 and above. It feels very loose and "spongy". I took it to a local dealership, and they told me it must be the tires. I had the tires replaced, and the problem remains. I believe that the steering is simply too loose and not well enough controlled. I have to work harder than I should to keep it in line. The problem has existed for the last couple years.

I bought my 2009 Toyota Corolla in June. After having it for a week I questioned about the reason as to why the steering was so hard to handle in the rain and when the wind blew. I was told this was because of the type of tires I had on my car. This problem has become worse. Yesterday I was driving and without out me steering the car it went on it's on to the right. This car takes two hands tightly holding onto steering wheel to drive. It is the scariest car I have ever driven.
2010 Corolla s steering is very hard to control. Car seems to wonder all over the road. Steering seems to be way to responsive!.
Eps steering is very hard to keep car in lane when traveling at highway speed. The best description I can give is that you have to make constant micro adjustments to keep it going straight. I do not feel a pull like a alignment issue but rather the car steering seems to want to drift left or right all the time. I have a 2007 rav4 with eps and it does not have the same issues.
I have a 2010 Corolla and until I spoke to another owner I thought this problem may have been me. It seems to me the steering is jumpy or hard to hold a line. I can be driving down the road in what I would call a straight line and the car will sometime jump to the right or left but yet I never moved the wheel. My wife actually thought at one time I was swerving on purpose.
I purchased a new 2010 Toyota Corolla from autoway Toyota in saint petersburg for my wife on 12/06/09. We were stressed out after hours of haggling and high pressure from the salesmen. The next day when I drove the car more (with only 40 miles on it) I noticed that the steering was hard to handle. It wandered. I found that I have to keep 2 hands on the wheel and eyes wide as it is unpredictable. In around 6 or 7 days I was back at autoway trying for hours to get them to take it back and sell me a camry for more money!! the Corolla had only 85 miles on it. But they said it had been titled, so they wanted to buy it back for a $3000+ loss to us, and then make money on the sale of another vehicle (which is the ways of the car dealer). We are stuck. So, if asked, I would testify in court that the steering in this car could cause an accident. The odds are much higher with this steering system, that someone could be hurt or killed. A car with only 40 miles on it and you notice a problem like this? imagine when it has 100,000 miles and worn tires! I have always loved Toyota, until this. It makes me sick every time I drive it, and make the payment! I told my family, friends, and autoway 2 months before todays news about the steering problem broke!! any way I can help with this problem(especially if they(autoway/ and Toyota) will take the car back, I will! call me to testify. .
The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that the steering wheel was hard to control. While driving 60 mph the steering wheel became difficult to control. He had to pull the steering wheel back and forth in order for it to continue driving in a straight line. He took the vehicle to the dealer who stated that the tow end alignment was a little off. The dealer aligned the vehicle; however, the failure was not corrected. The failure mileage was 7,500. The current mileage was 79,000.
The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Corolla. While driving at any speed the steering wheel was very hard to control and keep the vehicle driving forward. She took the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer checked the alignment and stated that nothing was wrong with the vehicle and that's the way it was designed. She also stated that recently the vehicle began to vibrate excessively. The failure mileage was 14 and the current mileage was 10,000.
I was driving on to the off ramp and off the freeway decelerating from about 65 miles per hour. I felt as if a strong gust of wind pushed my car to one side at the same time this occurred the steering wheel jerked to the left pulling my hand with it. At this point I had no idea what had happened I tried to recorrect the wheel and instead it went wildly back to the right. This happened another time within a couple of seconds. The next thing I know the car spun around 180 degrees facing oncoming traffic of cars coming off the freeway at which point the car drifted, hit the curb and rolled into the embankment. The car was totaled. My passengers leg was also injured and we are lucky to be alive. Until all this news came out about Toyota I had thought that what had caused my accident was strong winds because honestly that is what it felt like when I was driving behind the wheel and on top of that I was traumatized so I never thought about the accident having anything to do with the cars mechanical failure. Looking back I don't even believe the wind was even blowing that day that was the first time I drove that car on the freeway after purchasing the car. My sister also drove it once on the freeway and she also mentioned that the steering wheel felt hard to handle. Shed mentioned that driving from san jose to san francisco she had to have a firm grip with two hands on the steering wheel because it felt strange. The accident was in 2008 and it was a 2009 Corolla. Because of the accident we weren't even able to have a chance to determine whether or not the steering wheel actually had a defect.
