36 Body problem of the 2023 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 01/10/2024

I received the first recall notice about 7 months ago and have made the intent to set appointments with kendall Toyota and west kendall Toyota many times, but they stated that they don't have the fix available yet. They stated that they put me down in a waiting list and I will be called for an appointment according to the person on the phone the recall for my car is not a life-threatening recall. I stated that how come is not serious if the bumper gets detach while driving. I can cause an accident. I can I asked to speak to a supervisor in my last two intents to get appointments, but they stated that supervisors were not available at the moment, but a supervisor will call me back. Never get a call back. I received the second recall showing in records that it is pending, however I have done the due diligence to fix it but not Toyota west kendal and/or kendall Toyota.

40 Body problem of the 2023 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 11/21/2023

Water intrusion in the a pillars on both driver and passenger side during a rain storm. Toyota confirmed the water intrusion and stated that the gaskets and clips for the roof rack had failed, allowing water to get into the vehicle interior. I had owned the vehicle for approximately 6 months, and I'm not sure when these clips/gaskets failed. If this failure occured earlier, but there wasn't enough water to come though the interior upholstery, there is a possibility that there is significant mold growth behind the interior panels, which could negatively impact any occupants' health.

43 Body problem of the 2012 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 10/20/2023

Hello, to whom it may concern: my 2012 Toyota Highlander color pearl white VIN [xxx] ) has a repaint recall before Nov 2024. I was told at the dealer that I have to contact the Toyota dealers until I get the opportunity to get it paint. I was told that I had to contact any Toyota dealer until I get a date of acceptance. Thinking that it was not fair to delegate the responsibility on myself I made a few calls until I did get an appointment to get my SUV painted. The recall period is almost over (Nov 2024) I was told and I will put a claim on Toyota corporation for not making sure all the vehicles are completely painted. I will also put a lawyer to help me get across my claim if I am not informed from Toyota the date that they will work on my SUV with the repaint recall. Respectfully, [xxx] [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

10/10 tapped pedal into drive: Toyota Highlander 2018 car sped off at 50mph with my foot on brake for 3 minutes holding brake down and down-shifting did nothing vehicle stopped when it hit a pole destroying passenger-side fender and bumper airbag did not deploy unintended acceleration/sticky pedal as reported early this century when Toyota recalled 80,000 vehicles. Zero! when I telephone to report I was supposed to have edr test results in 30 days, the operator (not the unreachable quality control personnel) tells me, "well review of your crash results could take longer than 30 days. 45 Body problem of the 2022 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 10/01/2023

The front bumper came loose on the interstate, creating a loud noise as it slid under the tires. Once safely pulled over on the side of the road the car appeared to have spontaneously dropped the front bumper, we did not encounter any debris in the road, the weather is good and clear, there was no prior damage to the vehicle. The clips that hold the bumper in place seemed to be broken.

46 Body problem of the 2020 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/18/2023

About once or twice a week as I'm slowly braking to make a turn or stop, the car will surge forward. I have to depress the brake harder, and it does stop or keep slowing. I'm very concerned that if this happens as I'm stopping at a cross walk, someone could be hurt. I took it to the dealer who couldn't replicate it, so said it wasn't a safety issue. There are lots of forums that describe this with Highlanders. My partner can feel it happen too. I'm not sure if it's the braking system or engine. My guess is engine because it seems to be a power surge. It's inconsistent, and happens in all kinds of weather, hot/cold, dry/wet. No warning lights, or messages. Happens a lot, but I'm using the example of earlier this week. You're welcome to inspect if you want. It is a hybrid and one of my friends said it might be switching systems, but our other car is also a hybrid and doesn't have anything like this happening.

47 Body problem of the 2021 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/03/2023

The sunroof on my 2021 Toyota Highlander spontaneously exploded. I was merging onto a highway but just started to accelerate normally - was going approximately 20-30 mph. The entrance ramp was a merge lane, and there was a semi truck with no load, so intentionally accelerated slowly to allow the truck driver easy access to the highway. The temperature outside was approximately 80 degrees, clear skies, no construction around me. No object from the truck in front flew backwards to hit my Highlander. It sounded like a gunshot, but felt no impact to the Highlander. I slightly opened the sunroof liner, because the loud noise seem to come from directly overhead. I saw that the sunroof was shattered, so quickly closed the sunroof liner to prevent any glass from falling down. I exited the first exit and drove to the dealership. Ironically, I already had an appointment for routine maintenance. When I arrived at the dealer - I saw that an approximate 6" x 2" section of glass was missing, and the rest of the sunroof was completely shattered. There is no visible damage to any other part of the Highlander. The service advisor looked and it looked like the glass looked like it was pushed up, in his words "looked like it was pressure induced from the inside". My friend searched - and found this is a common problem in 2020-2021 Toyota Highlanders.

48 Body problem of the 2014 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/01/2023

Water leaks inside the car every time it rains. We checked the sunroof drain tubes. They are clear. It is getting in through the roof rail bolts. It runs down the pillars to the floor and underneath the floor carpet. The carpet is wet for long periods of time in rainy seasons. I am concerned there is going to be mold issues.

49 Body problem of the 2021 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/25/2023

I was driving on the highway when suddenly I heard a terrible sound like a shot, I thought that we were shot or had an accident. But the sunroof glass was broken. There wasn't anything causing impact I you can see this incident is outward like something exploded from inside via stress.

50 Body problem of the 2022 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/13/2023

I got a recall from Toyota and can't drive for almost a year . I went to the car dealer ship to ask for a repair , they told me maybe your car needs this bumper or no needs , I asked them to check my car if it was safe to drive to work ,many times to constant number of over 10 times. They refusedtor my car come in to check . O really woried if I dive on the road an have an accident . Bit its alomost hopeless because this car company doeant care about safety, only thinks about their profits. I have been asking them for rent me a car to drive because for nearly a year now I've been driving in fear but no anwser. I wonder is there a dealine when Toyota will produce this bumper? they keeps say they dont know? it is very dangerous if the customer's uses this Toyota Highlander for driving without knowing it is safe or not.

51 Body problem of the 2015 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/12/2023

We have a 2019 Toyota Highlander. VIN: 5tdykrfh0fs113256. There are two issues with this vehicle. . . 1) our bumper fell down after an uneventful car wash. We didn't hit anything. Reported it to the car wash place (ollie's car wash in walker, la) after we noticed it fell. We had to tie-strap it back up because the clips no longer worked right. This happened August 12, 2023. We have pictures of the damage. 2) a second issue is totally separate from the first. This one has to do with the back lifting door. It often gets stuck to where we have to manually force it closed. We have to reset the button often. Sometimes it gets stuck open and sometimes it won't open at all.

52 Body problem of the 2020 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/12/2023

Driving at highway speeds of 75 mph (posted speed), front bumper fell off of car. Outside temperature was 107 degrees. Bumper was lodged under car and all insulation peeled off of wheels. Had to pull all parts from under car and around wheel openings and was able to continue to destination. No accident occurred as the result of this as I was able to safely pull over to side of road.

53 Body problem of the 2019 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 07/29/2023

I was turning into starbucks at a low speed when the next thing I knew the car jumped forward and hit the car in front of me not one time but three times. I was finally able to get the car stopped but had damage to both cars. I believe the accelerator was stuck causing the accident. I want to know if there is a recall on the accelerator petal that it would have caused the Highlander to do this because to me this was a frightening site to go through.

54 Body problem of the 2022 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 06/01/2023

This is related to an existing recall released by Toyota but that did not include my vehicle year/time frame: Toyota is conducting a safety recall in the u. S. Involving certain 2020-2023 model year Toyota Highlander and Highlander hybrid vehicles. Approximately 751,000 vehicles are involved in this recall. The subject vehicles are equipped with a resin front lower bumper cover assembly, connected with mounting tabs. If there is minor impact to the lower front bumper cover assembly that causes the mounting tabs to detach from the vehicle during normal operation, one or more parts of this assembly could detach, which could become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash or injury for other road users. My entire front is sinking and tags are coming off forcing me to regularly pull the front fender back up into place. The way the front fender is secured is not supporting the weight of the front fender. You can clearly see the difference from when the vehicle is left alone versus me putting the front fender back in place and holding it to its original position. Now that I saw that Toyota issued a recall about the same issue, I am certain that more vehicle like mine are affected and believe this recall should be extended to all vehicle manufactured between 2020 - 2023.

55 Body problem of the 2022 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 05/26/2023

The lower front clip/air dam came off the vehicle at highway speeds(75mph) on a 2 lane highway. Highway 180 in west texas east of seminole, TX. A flat front face semi-truck(75mph I am guessing, but it is known the trucks exceed that speed regularly in that area. ) traveling in the opposite direction. I was completing the merge to the left as a passing lane section of the highway was ending. As we passed, just a double yellow strip separating the vehicles, the wind force from the truck caused the front left(drivers side) part of the air damn to detach. The air dam was pulled under the vehicle and the entire part was ripped off the Highlander and pulled under. Running over the part caused me to almost lose control of the vehicle. Luckily there was no one directly behind me or it could have been worse. If the part had been caught up in the drive train, I would have lost complete control at the 75mph speed. The dealer is denying my story and said I must of hit something. There are zero front impact marks on the air dam or any other part of my vehicle. The weather conditions were clear. About 3:30pm on a Friday. The highway was newly paved so there were no potholes or other road conditions. The front left part of the air dam is held in place by 2 plastic push pins. My theory is the wind force between the 2 vehicles passing at 75-80 mph was sufficient to cause the air dam to to be deflected enough to hit the highway. I do not know the physics of the air forces, but I am guessing it was a combined 130 mph wind gust that was generated.

56 Body problem of the 2015 Toyota Highlander

Water leak at sun roof caused by rubber seal failure in sun roof frame due to faulty material and or installation. Water damage to side air bag so tat it does not deploy properly & is a safety hazard. Mold carpet which is a health hazard & impedes drivers ability to drive.

57 Body problem of the 2021 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 05/05/2023

We purchased 2021 Highlander in March 2021. Since the day we experienced some vibration in the driver side mirror and we first notice bad vibrations when we drove above 40 to 50 mph. We never bought this up with Toyota or the dealer untill may 5th 2023. When we created a case with Toyota, they directed us to the dealer. Once we scheduled the service they confirmed the vibration and replaced part number: 879400e351. After the replacement we noticed that the vibrations are getting bad even during lower speeds now. The mirror is vibrating during idle and any speed higher than 30/ 40mph. We scheduled another appointment with the dealer and the manager did test drive another Highlander 2022 model and confirmed that it is also vibrating. It was surprising to see that all the Highlanders have these mirror vibrations. They said eventhough theres is vibration, it'd be considered normal. I rive mostly during night. The driver side mirror is blurry, vibrating and is extremly difficult to drive the car and is scary that the image on the mirror is not steady and create confusions to the driver. Changing lanes or entering to highway is really challenging as the mirros are vibrating too much and extremely hard to concentrate. This may even can cause major accidents as the image is not clear. The vibrations (humps, dips, rumble strips) are even translated to driver side vibrations and is very hard to see. The dealer even agreed to it but said that it’s a Toyota flaw in design because all Highlanders have this… and after talking to them, they said the only way Toyota would even look at this issue or have an engineer take a look in to it is if they get enough complaints or see a pattern. This is why I am reporting this to NHTSA. I want to keep americans road safe and sound to all my fellow humans. They also said Toyota rav4 also had these issue and Toyota issued a TSB however there is nothing on Highlander. I humbly request NHTSA to seriously look in to this and assist us.

59 Body problem of the 2019 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 03/31/2023

The front bumper keeps popping out. I’ve returned it to the dealer 3 times, who says a clip has to be replaced. However, it’s not covered under the extended warranty and they will just replace it. The dealer told me to just push it back in when it pops out. It will push back in place, but it will not stay in place. It has not been damaged.

60 Body problem of the 2014 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 03/27/2023

Some doors do not lock when the electric lock switch is pressed on the fob or using the button on the door. Sometimes the doors that did lock don’t the next time. This is a security issue while driving the vehicle and another security issue when parking. It’s also a safety issue for the same reasons. The door’s electrical locking system fails and needs to be fixed.

61 Body problem of the 2022 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 03/24/2023

There is a safety issue with the driver side mirror, as it shakes in its housing at varying speeds and on non-smooth roads, in that it becomes a distraction of focus in the small time of you looking at the mirror to then switch back to front. This has happened to me few times, changing lanes to the left lane, I saw the shaking of the mirror and lost focus of the image in the mirror and momentarily had no visual input while driving on a highway, at least no useful visual input for driving purposes. This phenomena is the same as if someone drew on the mirror and your eye just cough that drawing and just focused on that instead of the rear view image and then to the front. Side view mirrors are critical safety components of the car, but their viewing purpose is for very short and momentary when needed. If you add a distracting and almost blinding effect to them, you are bound to take away the drivers attention in that critical moment when you least can afford to lose attention. 4 things: 1. The driver is not looking at the road ahead, where the most attention is needed 2. The driver is looking at the left, bringing the instinctive tendency to move the hands, hence the steering, to the left 3. The driver is actually not visually perceiving reflection image of the mirror, instead the mirror itself, often the edges as it naturally gravitates the eye focus in this visual pattern 4. The time spent in looking to the left in the view of the driver side mirror is extended well beyond the safety limit and time needed to get mirror reflection view I foresee: 1. Someone encountering this, in a right curving 1 lane road, the path of the car would bi straight line directly towards the apposing lane/car. 2. Someone looking to the driver side mirror to change lanes to the left and either lose focus and not notice the oncoming car or worse notice abruptly a car and oversteer to the right, then over correct to the left then losing control Toyota driver confirmed today.

62 Body problem of the 2021 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 01/21/2023

On Saturday Jan 21, 2023 while driving 70 mph on i75 between naples and ft. Lauderdale florida the lower bumper fell off. We didn't hit anything on the road. I was driving and my wife was in the car and witnessed the incident. We pulled off onto the shoulder of the highway. Our quick response saved not only the lower front bumper from going under the front tires but also avoided a major accident. We had to tie the bumper to the grill and went to the nearest Toyota dealer. He put it up on the lift, showed us how plastic plugs securing the lower bumper had failed. He secured the bumper with zip ties so we could proceed on our journey.

63 Body problem of the 2023 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/20/2022

There’s a noticeable lag in the engine, especially when starting or turning. Sometimes, it’s almost a full second, which is quite alarming. When I asked the mechanics at a few dealerships about this, they all said it’s normal for these new “green” type engines with four cylinders and a turbo. However, I feel that the turbo is functioning poorly as the mileage increases. I’ve owned the car for almost three years and it only has 20k miles! another issue is the wind noise. At speeds exceeding 40 mph on the highway, the wind noise can become quite annoying. I’ve addressed this issue at two different dealerships, and both acknowledged the problem and admitted it. However, they both claimed that it’s inherent in the car’s design and advised me to wait for a potential recall from the manufacturer.

64 Body problem of the 2020 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/01/2022

The contact's wife owns a 2020 Toyota Highlander. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, his wife noticed that the front passenger's side carpeting was extremely wet. Upon investigating the failure, both the contact and his wife noticed that the carpeting underneath was extremely soaked. The contact stated that both he and his wife used towels to soak up the water. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the hvac evaporator drain hose was clogged, which caused water to leak into the front passenger's side of the vehicle. The independent mechanic informed the contact that the failure was related to Toyota technical service bulletin number: 0080-19 (hvac evaporator drain hose clogged due to insect intrusion) and referred the contact to the dealer for the repair. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and informed the contact that the repair could not be covered under warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 12,300.

65 Body problem of the 2015 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 11/15/2022

The rear tail gate seal for lamps on both the left and right side have failed and the lamp assemblies condense and fill with water. I have read other reports on your website of the same problem with the Highlander. In your other reports the a person was told Toyota will not warranty the lamps because of moisture in them because it is not a safety issue. While it is because the moisture blocks the light for the vehicle behind to see and thus rear end. I live in massachusetts and there is a yearly vehicle inspection and when I went to get it done I was told it would not pass safety inspection with moisture in the lamp so I had to get the left hand one replaced to pass. Now 6 months later my righthand tailgate lamp is full of moisture and will not pass my upcoming massachusetts safety inspection. The cost was $205. 44 now another of the same. It is definitely a safety issue in massachusetts and in my opinin should also be treated as such by the NHTSA for Toyota recall and reimbursement.
