Toyota Highlander owners have reported 210 problems related to wiper (under the visibility category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Highlander based on all problems reported for the Highlander.
Since purchasing this 2021 Highlander platinum in July 2021, the glass of the side mirrors are always 'shaky' at speeds above 40mph. The dealer has replaced the glass, which did not improve the issue. They then replaced the entire mirror assembly, which still has not fixed the issue. The mirror is shaky/jittery enough to make it difficult to look into while driving prior to changing lanes.

The driver side mirror wiggles at highway speed or with strong wind and the image in the mirror is not clear which causes the driver to do a double take on where and how far the car is. This is a safety issue that needs to be addressed and fixed by Toyota. I’m not the only one experiencing this issue, see other reports. Thanks for your quick action on this matter.
There is defect in the Toyota Highlander platinums' driver side mirror. The mirror glass will vibrate left and right when driving. It distorts the image in the mirror. When on highway, it is very noticeable. This kind of vibration should only occur if you drive over those potholes or ripple on the yellow double solid lines or shoulder of road. I have test driven multiple ones of the same trim on the dealership's lot to try to get dealership to look into replacing/fixing my mirror, but they are saying its a characteristic of the vehicle since the others are doing it. Also test drove a limited trim and the vibration was worst than the platinum. I have not had this issue with other 4 wheel cars. Toyota will not address this issue just based on my complaint so I am putting this complaint so hopefully Toyota will address the issue.
Repeated cracking of the windshield from even trivial impact from highway rocks/stones. Windshield replaced once by the dealer service station with oem glass at a cost of 1600 dollars out of pocket expense by the owner. Cracked again with another small rock hitting the windshield, directly in the line of sight. Inspected by the same dealer service center, advised to replace again at owners expense as Toyota does not cover glass damage. Multiple Toyota Highlanders and sienna minivans all across the USA have had this issue of windshield cracking in the last few years . Suspect there is a design/manufacturing/ quality control issue. Nhtsa needs to look into this as it affects the safe operation of the vehicle.

The windshield cracked spontaneously at two years old. The vehicle was not even moving and never got struck with a stone or a vehicle debris. The crack is very clean and linea without any dent and starts from the bottom of the windshield all the way to one-fourth of the height of the windshield on the passenger front side. Numerous complaint about this problem is logged in a Toyota customer complaint website about the Toyota Highlander from 2016-2018 having the same problem. Please tell Toyota to fix this problem.

Wife's Highlander going back to dealership for the second time due to windshield wipers not working.
My 2008 Highlander only has 130,000 miles, yet the driver's side visor drops and falls unexpectedly while driving, thus causing a driving safety hazardthe vehicle is accident free. I have codes check engine, vsc and trac off. Gas cap was replaced with new official Toyota matched part & system checked but problem found - this display light combination is common on Toyotas around this time. . My gas mileage & acceleration performance is negatively affected. Inability to properly accelerate creates a danger for inability to avoid collisions.

I was driving home from work and hear a loud exploding sound from my vehicle. I thought something extremely heavy was thrown or fell on my car. When I arrived home, I found a gaping hole on my sunroof. The glass was shattered but the object that "hit" it was nowhere to be found. After closely examining it, it doesn't make sense that an object hit it based off the angle the sunroof metal. The metal looks like the explosion came from inward not outward.

The driver side sunvisor will not stay up out of place when not needed. When driver is driving especially if brakes are used the visor falls blocking view and is quite dangerous. Visor will not stay up.

Rear window exploded inward while driving. Very loud bang sound. Nothing hit it. Temp was 66 degrees, clear skies. I had the front driver's window partially opened when this happened.
Spontaneously exploding panoramic sunroof. I was driving on a two-lane highway alone on the road may 31, 2019 at approximately 4:30pm. I had my sunroof cover closed and was traveling the posted speed limit of 65 mph with cruise control turned on. I heard a very loud and sharp noise, I thought it might be a gunshot. It startled me quite a bit, I was lucky to be the only car on the road because if I had been in traffic and had swerved from the shock of the noise,I might have been involved in an accident. I looked around and checked all of my windows, none were broken. I then thought a tire had blown, but I had not lost any handling, so I continued along the highway still wondering what had happened. About 10 minutes later I was stopped at a traffic light, surrounded by other cars and again heard a very loud and sharp gunshot sounding noise. I again looked all around my car and did not see any damage. But at this point I was sure something was wrong with my car and decided to pull over at the next spot to get out and inspect my car. When the light turned green and I drove away from the intersection, I heard a sound akin to ice cubes in a glass and knew that it was broken glass. Again, I couldn't see any damage. I pulled over and looked at the roof of my car, the rear sunroof was shattered into tiny pieces laying on the sunroof cover. I believe the sunroof glass is defective or improperly engineered and feel it is a danger. The Toyota dealership blamed it on a rock, but from the additional research I have done, it is not an isolated incident and there is growing concern surrounding the safety of these types of sunroofs in all types of automobiles. I filed an insurance claim to cover the damage; but feel that Toyota should take responsibility for the damage and feel very anxious now driving my car. I do not feel it is safe and worry constantly about the glass spontaneously breaking again.
The windshield cracked by the defroster. From the center of the windshield. The break is on the inside going down to the defroster and then across the drivers side of the windshield. The vehicle was parked, the when it was started, the defroster was put on high fan. After a few minutes the crack appeared in the center going down towards the defroster and then across the lower portion of the windshield on the drivers side.

Driver side sun visor stuck in down position, and will not move upward out of the way, obstructing driver's view. It can be moved to the side window, but then the side view is obstructed. I hesitate to try and force it up, because it feels like it would break and just flop around. Researching the problem, I have learned of many other owners of similar-vintage Toyota Highlanders who have experienced the same problem. The Toyota dealer quoted over $300 to replace with a new part. This is safety issue that should be recalled by the manufacturer.

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 owns a Toyota Highlander. The contact stated that the sunvisor failed. The contact advised that th sunvisor was previously replaced. However the repair did not correct the failure. The sunvisor failed to stay secured and obstructed the driver's view. The vehicle was taken to auto nation Toyota dealer 6300 west sahara avenue, las vegas, nevada 89146, phone number (866)-314-3304. For inspection the dealer advised that the suvisor assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not rpaired. The manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was not available.
I was driving my vehicle on our street, which is considered a private road, while preparing to turn around a bend in the road, a 94yr old woman walked in front of my car, was struck, and died. At no time during my turn did I see the woman as she stepped in front of my car. Research of the 2014 Highlander revealed many owners had difficulty seeing any object or person due to the blind spot of the left side mirror. Research at Toyota nation forum, revealed all owners had blind spots due to the size and position of the left side mirror. Most were related to drivers 5'2" in height, but 6ft drivers also complained about the blind spot of the left side mirror. In fact, I found another driver who hit a pedestrian, but their victim survived.

Bought this 2017 Toyota Highlander new from dealer in denver. 400 miles on vehicle. The windshield was cracked severely in the first 1000 miles from minor stones hitting the base of the windshield, requiring replacement- oem with camera, heat, radar sensors for $1800. Now, that second windshield has cracked again, requiring a 3rd windshield installed at 27,000 miles. Toyota slanted the angle of the front hood on this vehicle to reduce drag and improve gas mileage. As a result, minor stones on the road are thrown violently into the base of the windshield leading to cracks which start from the base of the glass and quickly crawl up and across the windshield requiring replacements. This is not safe. I have had 3 brand new Highlanders in denver over 12 years- a 2009 Highlander hybrid limited, a 2015 Highlander limited and this 2017 Highlander limited- and this is the first vehicle where the windshield barely lasts a few thousand miles before cracking and requiring a new windshield. These windshields are heated, with camera and radar sensors and oem only so replacing these is not cheap- $1800 per windshield from Toyota. This is a design defect in the vehicle and should be addressed. Protection for the base of the windshield needs to be added. The cracks always happen in the same spot.
The visor will not stay up and drops down obstructing the drivers view of the road completely(if taller than 59). When swung to the side it obstructs the view out the left window, and distracts the driver by swinging into the left side of their face while turning/changing lanes while driving. This is a common problem with Toyota vehicles due to a poor design friction mechanism that should hold the visor at any angle out of the drivers way. Replacement is $300 discouraging proper replacement and causing drivers to endure the safety hazard. Toyota has previously repaired visors under a technical bulletin on older vehicles. Due to the cost there are dozens of repair procedures and removal processes recorded on youtube to illustrate how widespread Toyota visor won't stay up just search on youtube. Removed the visor does not block the drivers view but removes safety warnings for the airbag and safe operation rollover warning. Toyota should issue another technical bulletin for this supposedly improved visor mechanism and repair for owners.
Both diver and passenger visors do not stay set. They move up when not expected and the sun is in your eyes especially in the mornings and evenings when the sun rises and sets!! extremely dangerous!!! dealer said it was normal. I highly disagree.
Driver side sun visor no longer stays up and blocks the drivers vision while driving. This seems to be a on going problem with Toyota sun visors.
This vehicle has a defective windshield washer pump that Toyota refuses to replace. I was in chicago on 12/26-31/2017 and the temperature was below 20 degrees. The windshield washer froze and I took the vehicle to grossinger Toyota, lincolnwood, IL on 12/27 and 12/29. They did nothing on 12/27 other than park the vehicle inside where the pump thawed and worked. The next two days it froze again. On 12/29 I drove to WI and placed my family in an unsafe situation with salt on the windshield and no working washer. I took the vehicle back to grossinger and they changed fluid to a colder temperature and used air to blow out the lines. The next morning it was again below 10 degrees when I left chicago. The washer again did not work and it placed my family in an unsafe situation with salt and dirt on the windshield. In hannibal, mo I sat in a fast food drive thru for 15 minutes and the washer started working. Soon as I was back on the road it again froze up. I took the vehicle to texas Toyota, grapevine, TX on 1/4/2018 and they refused to look at the vehicle unless the problem could be duplicated. I refused to drive back to chicago to duplicate the frozen windshield washer pump. It is obvious the culture of not caring about safety hazards on their vehicles continues at Toyota. I believe the diaphragm inside the windshield washer pump is defective and freezes when the temperature is below 20 degrees. Toyota refuses to acknowledge a defective windshield washer pump.
Driving south on 12/20/2017, on us-287 near the oklahoma/texas border with no other vehicles visible in front of us or oncoming traffic, the front section of our sunroof suddenly exploded. Luckily the shade was drawn or small pieces of glass would have fallen down on my family. The weather was clear and nearly cloudless blue sky day. Dealer refused to replace under warranty they said it had to have been a rock. They offered no proof that it was a rock and I find it next to impossible that it could have been caused by anything else. While driving we did have a fairly drastic temperature change from the mid 20's to the mid 60's. We were driving straight at highway speeds.
The bulky side mirror on the driver's side creates a safety hazard when making a left hand turn because of a large blind spot. I was involved in an accident due to that very reason. I was making a left hand turn as described above. I checked for oncoming traffic several times and turned when I saw traffic was clear. I was hit on the driver's side because my visibility was blocked by the mirror and the oncoming vehicle was not seen.
The bulky side mirrors on the Toyota Highlander block the driver's view of oncoming traffic when making a left hand turn. I have on at least three occasions barely missed a collision because of visibility issues related to the bulky side window on the driver's side. My elderly aunt driving a 2017 Toyota Highlander was recently involved in a serious collision because of visibility issues related to the bulky side mirror, I will let her file her own complaint.
The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Highlander. The contact stated that the driver's window intermittently ceased to function. The failure occurred without warning. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 103,659. The VIN was not provided.

When driving in the rain with the windshield wipers operating, a pattern, for a lack of a better term, appears as per the included photo taken when the vehicle was being driven at that time. This pattern or markings when visible run vertically in the form of wavy lines from one end of the windshield to the other. This condition is not the result of the windshield wipers, a dirty windshield, inside or out, or any substance of any kind intentionally applied or not and is an ongoing problem and appears every time the vehicle is driven in the rain. When first noticed, the vehicle was being driven over a period of several hours in heavy and light rain and a period of time in daylight and evening hours with the wipers being operated at different speeds. These markings are a substantial distraction especially in the evening where oncoming headlights exacerbate the condition. These markings when visible never change or streak as the wipers move back and forth as in the case when, for example, an insect strikes the windshield. To this end, and just by chance on the day the photo was taken, a streak is visible again probably due to an insect hitting the windshield or some other type of debris, however, the markings in question clearly stand out from the streak. It is noted in the case of the streak, as would be expected, it follows the movement of the wiper. The markings when applicable are visible when the vehicle is moving or stationary and can be clearly seen by the driver and front seat passenger regardless of the type of roadway. And for whatever reason, these markings are not visible in the absence of rain or water being applied manually from a garden hose.
Vehicle sustained a crack from two small stones hitting the windshield while traveling on a highway at approximately 55 mph. Crack spread significantly from the initial impact site. Weather did not have a factor in this as it was summer. Crack continued to spread even after the vehicle was parked in a garage. Crack spread with very little pressure applied to the windshield. Believe that the windshield was not manufactured to sustain a light impact.
I was driving down a feeder road of the interstate ~50mph. There were no other cars around me and the sunroof exploded. I pulled over and the remaining glass was clearly pushed outward, not inward.
Interstate drive- 70mph. No traffic within at least 0. 5 mile ahead. Multiple vehicles behind. No overpasses or overhanging signs or structures. Sudden, extremely loud noise followed by wind noise. Exited first opportunity. Panoramic sunroof shattered with large section missing above passenger seat. Minimal glass above sunroof screen. No foreign objects under glass atop the screen. At the time of explosion cars behind suddenly slowed and swerved, presumably from flying glass.
Bought this 2017 Highlander brand-new from the dealer. It had 67 miles on the odometer. Within a few thousand miles, a stone chipped the windshield and within days the windshield was a spider's nest of spreading cracks all across up and down the windshield. I bought a new 2015 Highlander from the same dealer and had the exact same problem after just a few thousand miles. I believe Toyota slanted the hood of the vehicle down for better airflow and resulting mpg increase and in so doing, all road debris such as stones, are propelled up right onto the windshield and the stones smash the windshield. What are the random odds that a brand-new, dealer-bought 2015 and 2017 Highlander would both get a stone chip that destroys the windshield within the first few thousand miles of driving? these windshield aren't cheap to replace- about $1400.
I am experiencing excessive amounts of glare from the windshield. The vehicle was purchased new in may of 2017. I initially had tint applied to the windshield for medical reasons and thought maybe it was causing an interaction with the glass itself. After having the tint removed, I am still experiencing this excessive glare.
Since April we have been trying to get our windshield replaced. The local auto glass dealer brought out 3 separate windshields that didn't fit before the finally disclosed that the windshield we needed has been on back order for some time. Apparently there are several hundred on back order in our region and the number seems to grow at a rate of about 15 a week. We have contacted Toyota and the dealer with neither are offering a solution. Due to the slope of the hood, the slope of the windshield, or faulty glass, these cars seem to be more prone to cracks. With our car having 4 cracks develop in less than a year with mainly highway and no gravel driving, plus the back order rate, there seems to be a broader problem.
Sun visor doe not stay up.
The rear wiper quits working. Initially the dealership took it apart, cleaned it and it worked temporarily. But then the wiper quit working again. There appears to be a problem with the mechanism and/or rear window allowing in moisture for this to continue occurring, requiring the need to keep going in and cleaning it or having to replace it as some have reported which appears to be the point I am at the last time I took it in.

The drivers side sun visor falls down whether in motion or stopped, it causes a blocked vision which can cause collisions.
