This is my new car 2020 Rav4 xle. I brought it in Dec 2019. One day I parked my car in evening and next day car did not start (after 3 month of use with around 1100 miles on it). I called Toyota and they send person to tow car. They did battery jump and it worked. After that I have manually turned off all the lights inside the car till now(head light is auto mode) and have no battery issue but I still worry about somthing wrong with this car's electric system.

11 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 08/23/2019

I have had and continue to have battery trouble with my Toyota Rav4. I first bought a new 2014 and at my regular maintenance at the dealership, the battery was replaced several times. I was uncomfortable enough to trade it in and get a new 2016. I still have this one, but it continues to have battery trouble. I have been left stranded at work when my car would not start. That is when I found massive amounts of corrosion, and to this day, the terminals corrode over even with new battery. The passenger door does not always lock with the key button bc of this issue. I would estimate I've replaced the battery 3-5 times between the two cars, with no real solution. Batteries have always been replaced/installed by the local Toyota dealership. (I'm sure invoices could be pulled if necessary) my cars have not stalled while running, they won't start or just start to have electrical issues w lights, and it gets checked by the dealership. They usually recommend replacement while the battery is covered. A separate but equally unsettling issue is with the windshield. It recently cracked due to a passenger flicking a bug on it. You would think a rock landed on it.

13 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2018 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 09/29/2018

While driving on Saturday morning 9/29/18, I stopped at a stop light and my 2018 Toyota Rav4 lost all engine power while in traffic. The computer video screen showed the message "charging system failure\malfunction". I then attempted to restart the vehicle and it did not crank over, I waited a few seconds, made another attempt , the vehicle started. I pulled over and parked the vehicle, looked up the error message in the car manual and it instructed me that it was a serious problem and to take the vehicle immediately to the nearest Toyota dealer. I then took the vehicle to my local dealer, they ran a vehicle diagnostic report, they found no error messages or voltage problems with the vehicle. They offered no reason for the loss of vehicle power. The service manager stated that they could only diagnose the vehicle so far and that they would need "corporate" to send someone out to do further diagnostics on the black box. On 10/1/18, I opened a problem report with Toyota USA and was given a case#. .

While driving the car suddenly loses all electricity, all the lights, every light indicator, the radio are off. The engine stops running and the car stops immediately. After I entered and turned the key the car wouldn't start and there was no electricity in the car. No lights, no indicators, etc were on. Took it to the mechanic to take a look but he couldn't find anything. Also took it to Toyota dealership and the technician inspected it and ran a diagnostics test but couldn't find the problem either.

20 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2003 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 12/19/2013

Ecm fail. Heading north on highway 53 and made a turn to go south on highway 53 car seem to apply brakes and gears was hunting which gear to go in all the time I giving it gas to get out of the way of on coming cars,, made it home, next day drove car and as I made a right turn same thing again went back home and call Toyota dealer they said it sound like the tranmission was failing, got on the internet and found that the ecm had fail on the car, I call Toyota and they said it would cost $1400 and that Toyota would not pay or discount any of it even they had know about the fail of the unit since the beginning, I pull the ecm unit myself sent it to be repair got it back and reinstall it and car would not crank had it tow to Toyota dealer and they said a wire had to be replace, after picking the car up it run good but front power door locks does not work and the security system does not work, I can live without those 2 system for now since I don:t want to put any more money into the car right now. I think Toyota should have replace this since they knew it was going to fail at some time with the 2003 Rav4 but no they would not do anything about it, no help form them. No more Toyotas for me or my family, I am going back to a Honda for sure. Total cost to me was $833. 05 not counting without the car for 2 weeks.

21 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2012 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 11/13/2012

This incident occurred on a tues nite in nov2012 at 930est. I had been playing bridge at a club house . I attempted to start car(this is a keyless ignition system)by normal proceedure. Press brake, then press start button. Nothing happened!I waited a few seconds, tried again,no joy. I got out to maybe hitch a ride, but all others had left. I opened and closed all doors plus thetailgate. I got back in at the car started ok. About 5 months later after attending a pizza party at walmart parking lot 3pm hot day, the problem reocurred. I slammed all doors again and the car started. I dont know if slamming doors is electrically involved, maybe a time delay is the answer. The next time was on July 18 2013. Ihad been playing bridge at the clubhouse at 1pm, I finished at4pm (another hot day) the car would not start I noticed thewindows would not work, in factnothing electrical would work. Icalled my road service and they verified bat was low, they charged for just a few minutes and car started. I drove immediatley to the local Toyota dealer. They could not make the problem reappear. They kept the car overnite and supposedly went overthe circuits. By the way the milage on the car was 3947 miles and car was 14 months old!they told me to have it towed to them the next time but thats no always convenient. My 2 yr warranty expired in may of 2014 and I have had 2 additional occurrences ,one in June 2014 and onein july2014. Im afraid to go on any trps out of town for fear it will happen again. I would like for Toyota to furnish me a schematic ofthe circuitry involved or provide a bypass switch so that the rf circuitry can be disabled and the car could be started like a normal car! by the way, this failure has occured 6 times,4 times while in warranty!.

22 Car Will Not Start problem of the 1999 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 11/08/2012

The contact owns a 1999 Toyota rav. When the ignition was turned to the off position in the evening, the radio was activated the next morning. Also, the fan in the engine was running and caused the battery to drain. The ignition was turned to the on position, but the vehicle failed to start. While driving at an unknown speed, the engine stalled and the air bag warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle restarted on some occasions, but the failures recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the theft deterrent system failed and needed to be removed. The vehicle was repaired, but the failures recurred and rendered the vehicle inoperable. 23 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 09/03/2010

1. While driving a 2007 Toyota Rav4 at low speed, the steering wheel lock engaged, instrument cluster lights flashed and the radio silenced for about 5 seconds. The car was able to be safely stopped. Normal steering resumed radio came back on and cluster lights stopped flashing. The car was driven approximately 2-3 miles and parked for apprx. 1 hour. 2. The car would not start, again no radio, but lights were illuminated to full brightness. No warning/fault light was illuminated. The car was "jump-started". When pulling out of the parking stall, the steering wheel lock engaged again. A tow truck was called. The car engine remained running normally. 3. While loading the car, the tow truck driver had the steering wheel lock engage and disengage repeatedly 4 - 5 times. The Toyota of walnut creek (California) technician states that the problem is a discharged battery, causing the electric power steering assist to not operate and stated that the steering wheel lock cannot engage while the car is in motion. The problem was that the steering wheel lock did engage, not a lack of steering assist. The technician stated he "cannot duplicate" the problem.

24 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 08/17/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota rav-4. The contact stated the vehicle would not start and received a jump start. After receiving the jump start and driving 15 mph, the power steering locked and the power steering warning light began to sporadically illuminate. The dealer advised the contact that the battery would need to be replaced to correct the failure. The battery was replaced. The contact was concerned with the safety of a recurring failure if driving on the highway and the potential of a crash. The VIN was not available. The failure and current mileage was 45,000.

25 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2008 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 06/04/2010

My wife returned to her 2008 Toyota Rav4 at the end of the workday. It would not crank. The radio and air came on, but the engine would not crank or turn over. She put the transmission in neutral and then back in park. It still would not crank. Finally, she lowered the emergency brake and tried starting again. This time it started. We took it to an advance auto parts store and had them test the battery. Their equipment stated the battery needs replacing, but the car (and battery) only has 18k miles on it. The report also stated that there is a power drain that needs to be investigated (we had turned off all accessories - radio, air, interior lights - and removed all 3rd party power cords from power outlets - cell phone car charger, etc - before running the diagnostic test). We will be taking the SUV into our local Toyota dealership for investigation, but wanted to report this based on another consumer complaint (odi #10274904).

26 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2008 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 06/23/2009

On several occasions, my new 2008 Rav4 would not start. The battery is brand new. When I turned the ignition, there was no sound / signal at all. Sometimes, when I put down the hand brake, and try to start the car again, it works. Other times, it doesn't. There are different things that can trigger it to start. How can a brand new car be so unreliable!? we've gotten it towed to the Toyota dealership and they can't seem to find the problem. It's been at the dealership for 2 days and nothing has been done to fix the problem.

27 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2002 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 07/07/2003

On July 7, 2003 I was on my way to work when the battery discharge light came on and I had no steering capability. I was travelling about sixty miles per hour on the interstate. I almost hit the median divider before I could steer the vehicle to the side of the road. I called the dearlership and explained what had happened. They told me to have the vehicle towed in, they didn't even offer to have it towed. Incidentally this is a new vehicle with less than 1100 miles on it and I had only driven the vehicle about one week before the above happened. The dealership kept my vehicle for two days and I went to get my Rav4 and asked what had happened. The service manager said that the drive belt pulleys had not been properly installed on my new Rav4 and that caused the drive belt to come off of the pulleys and broke the tensioner and the housing guide. I took the car home and the next morning, the new Rav4 would not start. I jumped srtarted the Rav4 from my wifes vehicle and let it run for about fifteen minutes thinking that the battery just needed a charge. My wife was going to use the neew Rav4 vehicle that day to shop. She called me about mid-morning and informed me that the new Rav4 vehicle would not start as she had gone to the mall. That evening my wife and I went to the mall and jum started the vehicle agin and I finally got it home and it is now in my garage, it just will not start. I called and talaked to the service director about all of the problems that I was having with my new Rav4 SUV. He equated my break-downs to going to the store and buying a box of four light bulbs and taking the light bulbs home and putting a new light bulb in a lamp that had a burned out light bulb and when the lamp is turned on then the new light bulb burns out. This really made me angry. I told him that there was big difference in a fifty cent light bulb and a $25,000. 00 new vehicle with only 1100 miles on it.
