I received a notification of a malfunction in the intelligent clearance sonar system and a malfunction in the hybrid system. I made an appointment with the dealer but on the morning of the appointment the car was non-operational in the driveway and had to be towed. The diagnosis was corrosion of the wiring harness. This problem has been widely reported on Rav4 hybrid forums and appears to be an issue in regions of the country with snow/salt road treatments. I would appreciate an investigation.

Four incidents of damage to wiring by rodents. Mechanic believes the rodent to be a rat. One rat has been caught in a live trap. Yet two more incidents of eaten wiring. The rat eats the insulation on the wiring and bites through the wiring. The rat drags tissues into the h/a vents. Even tried to eat a package of foil wrapped hand wipes. The rat has left scat under the seats. The rat was observed playing under my car while parked downtown. He managed to get back in the car and rode 'home. '.

My Rav4 caught fire in the middle of the night while parked on the street in front of my house. It had been parked for 12+ hours. After burning for about 10 minutes, it exploded with a force so great that it lifted the car onto the curb, knocked over a firefighter, and damaged our boat parked 10 feet across the street. The inspector from the fire department determined the initial fire was from faulty electrical wiring but said he had never seen a car explode in his 25 years on the force. Toyota conducted their own investigation and agreed it was electrical but could not determine fault due to the severity of the damage.

Driver side rear quarter panel started on fire. This occurred after an approximately 4 mile drive. I believe the fire started on the drive. I parked the vehicle in a parking lot with only one other vehicle. When I was walking into the store I smelled burning plastic but did not relate it to my car burning. I was in the store about 5 minutes. When I walked out I saw the fire. There was no outside influence to the fire and nothing inside the vehicle vehicle. The only thing in that area of the vehicle is wiring.

While driving 55-60 on a highway, my anti-skid warning light came on, the 4wheel drive light a half hour later, followed by the engine light aprx 1 hr later. The following morning, while driving, the cruise control went out on me, the car unexpectedly slowed and I noticed the cruise light flashing on and off. The remote start did not work on day #3, as I traveled to have the car repaired at serra Toyota, traverse city, mi. The service tech told me that "the mechanic literally poured water out of the evap canister, we have seen other rav's w this problem and we have a bulletin on it, so Toyota is aware. The canister is faulty, which allowed road water, (very wet, slushy roads at time), to get in and damage the wiring. " the service tech also told me that the new canister/hose replacement system addresses this issue. I emailed Toyota japan, they had "henry kerry of Toyota executive headquarters, torrence, calif call me. Mr. Kerry stated that the problem was related to overfilling the gas tank. I told him that the tech said "(they) literally poured water out and they had seen this problem previously. " mr. Kerry advised that "I should have talked to the service manager to get the factual info. " bottom line: I feel that I should have been notified that electrical failure could occur, due to canister/hose failure and that a new part had been developed which, once installed, would prevent (road) water from shorting out the wiring. (the work order receipt states: ("water intrusion into evap system") thanks much, scott mclennan 989 370-0122 samgbm@hotmail. Com.

Extensive rodent damage to wiring harness, passenger air bag, heat/ac ducts, headliner, carpeting front & rear, instrument panel, and many more misc. Parts. Repair costs - $10,257. 91 because Toyota chose to make this car with a smaller carbon footprint using edible products (soy foam, rice husks, etc. ) in place of petroleum for much of the plastic parts. This material is now attractive to rodents and they designed the air inlet to the heater without a screen which allows rodents entry to the vehicle. It becomes a safety issue because the air bag was damaged enough to require replacement. My Toyota has become the incredible edible car.
Engine control module wiring is exposed to elements. This is a crucial part and in climates where salt is used, loss of control due to failed stability control or engine problems could result. . Read more...

I got the car off of my brother for $4,000. 00, it looks great, never ever been wrecked, paint great, brand new tires, new exhaust, new brakes, etc. I was waiting on him to get the title noterized and he brought it over today, but this morning when I shut the door in the driveway, the fuse box bursted into flames, both windows came down and luckily I had a large fire extinguture in my house and was able to put the fire out, otherwise it was parked between 3 buildings worth 1/2 million $$$ and surely would have burned all 3 down if I had not had the ability to put the fire out. The flames were as high as the window and the car a total loss as all the wiring burned up in less than 2 minutes in the fuse box area. If this had happened on the highway, I am sure it would have been disasterous and at the very least the entire car would have burned up. I am 55 years old and this is the very first car I have ever owned that caught fire.

2008 Toyota Rav4 taken in for normal service schedule. Dealer found rodent nests and chewed wiring/insulation under the engine cover. Had to replace wiring harness. Dealer said Toyota uses soy based covering/insulation instead of plastic which he has seen many instances of rodent chewing. This poses a fire/safety hazard as well as a performance issue if the wires are damaged, cut or shorted. There are websites dedicated to this issue for all the money people have spent in repairs.

Hello, on Jun 26, 2009 my wife and I purchase a certified Toyota Rav4. We have had nothing but problems. Electrical problems: abs light, brake, and egf light remain lite. Repairs are: brake switch replacement, igy relay replacment. In addition the cruise control would not function and sometimes the transmission would be stuck in reverse. Unable to shift out of this gear position. A local mechanic found the problem in that the connections in the wiring harness are filled with water. He was unable to determine how the water got there. A few days later, the same problem returned. . I am writing to share with you my concern of the electronic problems with the 2008 Rav4 from Toyota. Town Toyota service manager, wenatchee, wa told us not to worry aboutit as it is still safe to drivewith abs, brake, and egf lights illuminated. I did contact Toyota (via emai) but no response. I question the validity of that statement in light of recent recall news and thought you should know.
I had driven about 3 miles then got stuck in a traffic jam. At that time, I could smell something burning but I thought it was the car in front of me. Finally, I got off that road and drove another 10 miles but I again noticed the burning smell. I checked the panel and the car was not running hot. Next, a small curl of smoke came from under hood on passenger side. Then suddenly smoke began billowing from under the hood and into the car through the vent. I lost steering and braking. I removed the key from the ignition, but the car continued moving forward. Then the car abruptly stopped. Flames engulfed the engine. The fire department came out and extinguished the fire but the car was totaled.
